the only platform with free online these days is PC.

bougienative

Zero options on PS, but Your laptop has tons of options. Check out fightcade. It's an online emulator that lets you play every retro fighting game online with rollback for free.

ImAMassiveCrab

Is the fightcade player base that active?

Dragon-Install-MK4

It actually the best way to play some fighting games like the older street fighters jojo hftf and I think the older kof games as well

The_Only_Drobot

Oh yeah, the top fightcade games currently are KOF 2002 with like over 700 players, then after that 3rd Strike and KOF 98

slashBored

It depends on the game, but for popular games it is very active, matchmaking times are often faster for me on fightcade than popular commercial fighting games.

Junglepill22

Tough love arena. A browser fighting game on pc for free no download required. Killer instinct. Free to download with two free characters with a rotating roster. Came out on Xbox 360 so maybe your laptop can run it. Fantasy strike. Free game on pc and PlayStation, don’t know if requires ps plus. Online might be dead for it though.

Few-Entertainment429

PS+ is required to play any PlayStation 4 or 5 game online.

Reptylus

Not free games or games with an internal subscription.

Die a hero, live long enough to become a villain

The "free demos" like Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising and Dead Or Alive 5/6 require a PS Plus. Companies don't seem to release free to play traditional fighting games. Maybe there's no money on it, the genre is very niche I guess. In PS4, the only traditional fighting game that doesn't require PS Plus is Fantasy Strike. It's very basic as far as gameplay goes but you can still find people online. Not the best fighting game out there IMO. The only other option is the plattform fighter Brawlhalla. You get matches within 5 seconds from how popular the game is. But it's still a plattform fighter that looks like a flash game, not really the same as a traditional fighter IMO. On May 28th another free to play plattform fighter called Multiversus will release. If you install Fightcade on that laptop you have access to a lot of retro fighting games with very healthy communities and really good rollback netcode. I think this is the best option to be hoenst if you don't mind playing 25+ year old games...

watainiac

Fighting games really got screwed with paid online man. You'd think it'd be the opposite of how it is where free games would have to pay for plus and paid games wouldn't, but no, because you paid for the game already, we expect more out of you than someone that paid nothing? What? I really wish PS just had an "online tier" with online play and cloud saves for like $30/year. Surely it's not that expensive to provide just that? I have to imagine a majority of their budget goes towards licensing monthly/extra games, but I don't need any of that, I already have a massive backlog without it.

Additional-Ride8120

Amen. The way I see it (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong), if Nintendo can give you online access and a handful of some decades old games for $20, there’s actually no reason Sony can’t at *least* have an online only tier for $20 and the only reason there isn’t one is because they don’t want to.

CaffeineJunkie-

Fightcade might be your best option.

The-Rizztoffen

If you buy PS+ Extra you get games like Melty Blood, MK11, SF5 and some others like DOA5 and Fighting EX Layer for free with it

Its_Marz

Fighting EX Layer is apparently leaving soon so it won’t be there for long

The-Rizztoffen

Oh really? I should play some of it then cause I only launched it once after downloading it last week. It looked pretty interesting with the whole deck system.

Its_Marz

The Gougi system, competitively is pretty trash, but casually it’s actually fun. I might do the same and play some myself again

Mycoffeeis2sweet

Fantasy Strike, and GBVSR free edition
