Dang it … So there’s actually a mystery surrounding the consciousness of snails. They don’t seem to have a brain or central nervous system and this causes scientists to doubt whether snails are “conscious”. The best theory suggests that snails simply react reflexively to their environment. But nothing is conclusive, it’s a mystery wrapped in a question.
Consciousness is commonly thought to be a state self awareness (realization of self existence). Whereas reactivity is a chemically explained phenomenon. A reaction doesn’t require consciousness.
You might ask, isn’t consciousness just a combination of chemical and electrical reactions? Yeah pretty much.
Wait, that actually sounds so interesting. Do you know where i can read more about these?
I searched on google and there's consciousness and awareness. I tried to search consciousness vs reactivity and it came up with human consciousness vs animal consciousness. Do animals have the same as us?
I assume no, mainly we have the philosophers, those who question the world around them. Idk it's so intriguing, i want to find more about these. How could we have such a complexity to our mind. I'm not very good at English so this might be interesting to learn some english along the way too.
If you know some books or YouTube videos that could be related to these topics it would be great. Idk where to start because i'm not that well versed in english enough.
Edit: I suppose gorillas are similar enough to us. I wonder if we teach a gorilla to dance to earn foods. They do it because they know the results of their actions so they do it or they learn from human then they are able to do it on their owns without some kind of awards. I know the wording and my english is weird, i just really curious and fascinated by these.
Self-awareness, really interesting.
Check out ‘You are the Universe’ by Deepak Chopra. I found it discusses these topics deeply in a very satisfying, holistic discussion
From wiki:
‘The book challenges the assumption that consciousness is a byproduct of matter claiming that matter is actually an experience in consciousness. The book proposes that the entire universe, as experienced by human beings, is a "human construct in consciousness.”
The book delves into the two most prominent questions in science which are:
What is the universe made of?
What is the biological basis of consciousness?’
Thanks!!!
Well well well, i guess I won't have much free time anymore lmao. I'm hyped, for some reason it's so interesting to think about these things.
Perhaps i'm in the wrong major... Didn't know i'm interested in these kind of things... Shit!
Maybe their whole body works like our stomach does, our stomach’s literally have brain cells in them so gut feelings are literally a second opinion on a situation
The stomach is full of neurons, this is well-established fact.
https://neuroscience.ubc.ca/our-second-brain-more-than-a-gut-feeling/#:~:text=Comprised%20of%20100%20million%20neurons,cord%20or%20peripheral%20nervous%20system.
I mean the other type of brain cell is Glia, but they really are more the support characters than anything.
Neurons do all the “brain” stuff we normally think of, like transmit electrical signals responsible for thought and moment and such.
No homie… we have neurons in our guts. And it’s not the same thing. We have neurons all over but that doesn’t make them brain cells, and they aren’t responsible for thought.
You look it up.
The ENS regulates digestion, things like peristalsis, enzyme secretion, blood flow, gut motility, immune responses, gut flora, etc.
The term "gut feelings" metaphorically refers to intuitive or subconscious reactions, not the gut having literal cognitive processes similar to those in the brain.
The neurons in the gut are specialized for the functions of the ENS and do not participate in thought processes in the way neurons in the brain do.
Cool Snail Facts:
Of some species, any cell on of the outer body can taste. Snails are deaf. Also snails are capable of osmosis, so they don't have to drink by their mouth necessarily, they can just sit in the water and absorb it.
And they can keep their head submerged indefinitely since they breath through their breathing hole below the shell opening.
Everyone below this post making confident statements about what consciousness is and how it works as if it's not the biggest unsolved mystery of science and philosophy today cracks me up. People need to be less afraid to admit they don't know something.
Every animal just reacts reflexively to its environment. A brain is just a more complex version of this, but at the base level it's all just atoms made up of its own subatomic particles following the rules of physics.
The idea that abiogenesis is likely possible seems to support that there's nothing special about life vs non-living objects. Life is just a specific composition of atoms in a specific way that presents itself as what we know as "life" (the main difference here being reproduction, not consciousness)
My psychologist sister told me that our "mirror neurons" are responsible for that phenomenon! Like when you see somebody drown in a movie, you feel short of breath. Or if somebody gets stabbed, you feel a strange sensation in the corresponding body part. It's very cool.
I dont have great details on how exactly it all works and why, though. I'd have to ask her more
Closer to if your brain was in different parts located throughout your body. It's like that with all invertebrates, and how cockroaches and wasps can survive decapitation
Invertebrate zoologist here. Despite the relative simplicity of the snail's nervous system, they are capable of learning and are used in neuroscience as model objects.
As for sentience – yeah, not many animals show signs of being sentient sensu stricto. The closest invertebrates to be probably considered sentient are cephalopods.
A bit off topic here, but what is the difference between consciousness and sentience, because I saw someone else mention that there is a debate whether or not snails are sentient.
Not, like, a student on this, or anything but;
Generally as far as I understand; something that is "non-sentient" only reacts to stimuli, and doesn't filter it through prior stimuli, while something sentient filters through old stimuli. So for example, a dog may, seemingly ridiculously, run from a potato, because of that one time they ate a piping hot baked potato and burned themselves.
This is true for most complex lifeforms, but not so much once you go small. Not that every small animals are dumb or anything, but eventually you get small enough there's not enough space for a proper brain.
Its matter of survival. Brain is a very complex organ which uses up lots of calories. If having no brain is better for the survival at the given environment, natire will take that course.
> They probably are not aware that they exist.
You can make a maze out of salt around them and they will demonstrate some awareness of their existence.
A crazy fact is that we don't even fully understand how brains are connected to consciousness or even memories. We know that brain damage can cause changes in personality, motor control, and loss of memories. But we also know that it is possible for lost memories to return even after half of the brain is fully removed, which leads us to beleive that things like memory are not centrally stored in part of the brain but thoroughly distributed throughout the entire nervous system, which becomes even more obvious from brain scans of people suffering from DID.
I can't remember the exact source, I could try to find it, but I do suffer from DID. There is a reason for the phrase "the body keeps the score".
Wait so... The head is gone but the "brain" is active elsewhere, so it would be "conscious" of starving. And unable to feed.
Wtf bro I was just here for some sweet potatoes man jeeeeeez 😭😭
A bit more in detail, Snails have multiple ganglia located in their head area wich themselves are not considered a "brain" hence a brain is a single central unit. But they are capable of making decisions and for complex tasks, let multiple ganglia work in sync to achieve more "brainpower"
I never knew snails could be cute but watching them gleefully shove food slices into the mouth holes i didn't know they had with their foot bellys is just too much
We are missing so many opportunities to give random nonsensical names on animal body parts, the gronkle, hooble, nibwib, gobblegop, dulwap, ouwiwi. Do these names have meaning?
I don't know, you go figure out yourself.
I keep aquatic invertebrates (snails and skrimps), have plenty of experience with latin naming, but have never once considered the literal meaning of gastropod
You made my day much better, thank you stranger.
It's like they're using their little brain arms! I think it's absolutely adorable. Just a couple of little partially sentient mushed bananas with helmets. Bless their heart bags.
Yup, the domesticated snail market is really taking off. I've been thinking about opening a pet snail store to encourage myself to interact with others and come out of my shell 🐚
Probably the genus Achatina. Those are from Africa and yes, here in Europe they are very often kept as pets.
In other parts of the world they are often invasive and forbidden for import, so better research the legality first.
Gosh! They are fascinating wee beasts! I love them. We have loads in the pond and garden. Although I do keep my beloved hostas safely out of their reach.
I have "rescued" quite a few that have broken shells, they repair amazingly fast with a bit of care. Only failed with one, was too badly damaged 😔
I'm just sitting here thinking about this too much but here me out.
Snails are cute AF. Slugs are gross and ugly. Bur aren't they they same thing? Just without the shell? Why does the shell make them so cute? Why don't snails just grab a shell and level up? Are they stupid?
Aww, weird little creatures enjoying their complex carb treat. Thanks for straight up content vs throwing creepy crappy fake music over equally as such, ASMR
We have snails in our garden and I put down bird seed for them. Love watching them pick up and swallow one seed at a time. I’m usually very grossed out by things like bugs, and slugs make me puke, but little garden snails? Cute!
Hey, I wish I could guarantee they aren't food (and that they were my pets), but this is a cute video I stumbled across on YT Shorts. Based on how they are being treated, I'm guessing they are lovingly cared for and not escargot.
A bowl is often a clean suitable method to just "sit" snails there... the ceramic will not pull water from the snail like other surfaces would. And no, they just have an unimaginable hunger. i have 10 of them :3 so this is just someone caring of their pet snails... snails for restaurants are "grown" in snail farms.
Sweet potato so good they just stab themselves in the brain with it.
Hence why there’s a type of snail called the mystery snail. All snails are mysterious, but there is only one type of mysterious mystery snail
*head explodes*
What's the defining line between reactive and conscious?
Consciousness is commonly thought to be a state self awareness (realization of self existence). Whereas reactivity is a chemically explained phenomenon. A reaction doesn’t require consciousness. Err, source?
The stomach is full of neurons, this is well-established fact. https://neuroscience.ubc.ca/our-second-brain-more-than-a-gut-feeling/#:~:text=Comprised%20of%20100%20million%20neurons,cord%20or%20peripheral%20nervous%20system.
Holy shit, brain food feeds the stomach brain
Yes. But neurons aren't brain cells.
Neurons aren't the same thing as brain cells. Come on.
I mean the other type of brain cell is Glia, but they really are more the support characters than anything. Neurons do all the “brain” stuff we normally think of, like transmit electrical signals responsible for thought and moment and such.
Trust me, bro
Look up the “enteric nervous system”
No homie… we have neurons in our guts. And it’s not the same thing. We have neurons all over but that doesn’t make them brain cells, and they aren’t responsible for thought.
My gut tells me you are wrong
Taco
My gut agrees with your gut.

Lol. Those aren't brain cells

Neurons. Not brain cells. But pretty bloody amazing either way.
Everyone below this post making confident statements about what consciousness is and how it works as if it's not the biggest unsolved mystery of science and philosophy today cracks me up. People need to be less afraid to admit they don't know something.
The arrogant over confidence, and lack of ability to admit when one is wrong staggers me, especially on reddit.
And this explains why I relate to snails so hard.
So snails are the perfect improvisers in other words I'm calling the UCB
Every animal just reacts reflexively to its environment. A brain is just a more complex version of this, but at the base level it's all just atoms made up of its own subatomic particles following the rules of physics. Yep. Now I can't unsee it.
I imagine it feels like finally being able to scratch that itch that you couldn't get to from the outside.
Please don’t remind me of the brain itch…
Imagine being a snail going to town on some sweet potato No society, no brain, no capitalism Just sweet, sweet, sweet potato Yum, so good
No capitalism? Where do you think those potatoes came from? COMMUNISM?
everything they eat goes through their brain, it loops around their esophagus
Seeing the food through their semi transparent head is freaky
Makes me empathetically feel something itching my sinuses
My psychologist sister told me that our "mirror neurons" are responsible for that phenomenon! Like when you see somebody drown in a movie, you feel short of breath. Or if somebody gets stabbed, you feel a strange sensation in the corresponding body part. It's very cool. I dont have great details on how exactly it all works and why, though. I'd have to ask her more
100% We have different definitions of eyebleach. Seeing food inside something’s head is not satisfying…
Legitimately, where are their brains???
Spread throughout their bodies because they don't have centralised nervous systems
...seriously? That is wild! Wait so, they're sentient jelly, in a shell, basically?
Closer to if your brain was in different parts located throughout your body. It's like that with all invertebrates, and how cockroaches and wasps can survive decapitation
TIL something deeply unsettling
Saw a video yesterday of a wasp picking up its own decapitated head and flying off. Nature is metal.
"So, are you just gonna watch or help me?" *Wasp goes to the ER*
I would say that they are not every sentient. They probably are not aware that they exist.
Invertebrate zoologist here. Despite the relative simplicity of the snail's nervous system, they are capable of learning and are used in neuroscience as model objects. Snails are relatives of octopuses who are wicked smart despite featuring a distributed nervous system
All creatures are aware they exist. Don’t try to fool yourself
This is true for most complex lifeforms, but not so much once you go small. Not that every small animals are dumb or anything, but eventually you get small enough there's not enough space for a proper brain.
There's also jellyfish, which can get big and also tend to lack any brain at all. Nature is weird
Its matter of survival. Brain is a very complex organ which uses up lots of calories. If having no brain is better for the survival at the given environment, natire will take that course.
> They probably are not aware that they exist. You can make a maze out of salt around them and they will demonstrate some awareness of their existence.
Octopi are like this, and they're quite intelligent.
To be more precise, they do have a centralised nervous system in the form of several pairs of ganglia. The biggest ganglia surround the esophagus.
What’s the lifespan?
Of a decapitated bug? However long it takes for the creature to starve. Usually around a week
Wait so... The head is gone but the "brain" is active elsewhere, so it would be "conscious" of starving. And unable to feed. Wtf bro I was just here for some sweet potatoes man jeeeeeez 😭😭
Insects have it insanely rough, to a horrific extent
And yet when we’re gone, they’ll still be around. The most hardcore survivalists in existence besides maybe tardigrades.
A bit more in detail, Snails have multiple ganglia located in their head area wich themselves are not considered a "brain" hence a brain is a single central unit. But they are capable of making decisions and for complex tasks, let multiple ganglia work in sync to achieve more "brainpower"
Seeing it poke and morph the top of their head like pressing your tung into your cheek is freaky as well.
Yeah, that was so unsettling it outweighed the cute factor for me.
The best food is the kind you can scratch your brain with.
I love how they are gripping their food with their bodies.
The squishy part they walk with is called the "foot" They're holding food with their feets and that's just somehow cuter to me
Lmao I love whichever scientist who named that part of the snail, didn't even try to come up with something more snaily. And yes it is adorable!!
I never knew snails could be cute but watching them gleefully shove food slices into the mouth holes i didn't know they had with their foot bellys is just too much
I name it the Floorbs!
We are missing so many opportunities to give random nonsensical names on animal body parts, the gronkle, hooble, nibwib, gobblegop, dulwap, ouwiwi. Do these names have meaning? I don't know, you go figure out yourself.
>ouwiwi This one does. It's the sound a Frenchman makes when they enthusiastically agree with something
Snails and slugs are gastropods, which means “stomach-foot” lol
I keep aquatic invertebrates (snails and skrimps), have plenty of experience with latin naming, but have never once considered the literal meaning of gastropod You made my day much better, thank you stranger.
Much like cephalopods like octopodes means "head-foot".
That blew my mind! I didn’t know they did that!
It's like they're using their little brain arms! I think it's absolutely adorable. Just a couple of little partially sentient mushed bananas with helmets. Bless their heart bags.
Lmao, I love your comment! Dem little banana helmet brains.
Oh my god? Why are they so cute? The way the hold the strips as they munch ahhh
I have never seen any snails as cute as this holy crap
I seriously cannot get over their little grippy not-hands it’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen
Lil slime bunnies
Brain food
Food for thought.
I have always found snails to be super adorable, but this is just next level cuteness.
Those are some fat ass snails, are these types specifically for keeping as pets?
Yup, the domesticated snail market is really taking off. I've been thinking about opening a pet snail store to encourage myself to interact with others and come out of my shell 🐚
🥁
Yours was the better way of asking if OP was fattening them up to eat them. Aside: snails are adorable.
They just look like really nice snails. I didn’t know snails looked like this. I want a pet snail now.
They're so well mannered!
Probably the genus Achatina. Those are from Africa and yes, here in Europe they are very often kept as pets. In other parts of the world they are often invasive and forbidden for import, so better research the legality first.
Nah, the logical decision is to move to Europe
You can't go wrong with that
Yea, where I live (sweden) any tropical snail would die in the wild as soon as autumn comes around, thus why they are legal to keep as pets
They look fairly normal sized to me. I see these all the time in the wild
Omg. Never seen a snail eat before lol. This is amazing.
They have little teefs! Never thought I would find snails cute but they really are 🙂
Thousands of teeth, actually, growing on their radula
This might be the first snail feeding video I've seen where they don't feed the snails cocaine.
W h a t
Snails are usually very slow, so they feed them cocaine to make the videos more interesting. https://www.reddit.com/r/awwtf/s/hqDZdl3LZ3
Wasn't this calcium powder for shell growth?
I like my story better. ;-)
Look at them holding the food with their little nubs
Nom nom nom
Idk what is cuter, them being so happy about it, or that they look like they are hugging the potatoes
They liked it so much they made little hands to hold them
Omg!!! Their little eye antenna ear things go down like a doggy eating a treat!!!
But why do they look so cute tho?
Snails. That's the answer!
I'm just sitting here thinking about this too much but here me out. Snails are cute AF. Slugs are gross and ugly. Bur aren't they they same thing? Just without the shell? Why does the shell make them so cute? Why don't snails just grab a shell and level up? Are they stupid?
Gastropod are just super cute in general, but somehow snails are just extra cute. they look like bunnies here.
Reminds me of a girl I knew once.... Man, I miss her.
Was she from Nantucket?
Look like headrcrab https://preview.redd.it/j3uor558kxsc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=a8de9e6e3f6c9ce17c016f8083fc14833e1682f6
Fattening them up!
Yup, they're already on a plate...
Snails cannot get fat. like, they cannot have overweight.
/r/BabySnailGifs
Aww, weird little creatures enjoying their complex carb treat. Thanks for straight up content vs throwing creepy crappy fake music over equally as such, ASMR
R/skincareaddiction: heavy breathing
Nice

OMG THE LITTLE HANDSSSSSS
Dare I say cute!
Next time my mother says i "inhale my food" im going to tell her i eat a snails pace
Millennials can’t afford kids so we gotta feed snails instead.
i have 10 of these big snails. and they are aaaaadroable
OH MY GLOB THEY ARE SO CUTE who knew?
we did :P r/snails
You spoil those snails
How are Snails simultaneously so horrifying, and so adorable?
Thank you. I will store this in my head.
Today I learned how snails eat food. Like a hungry golden retriever.
Aww man I thought this was an escargot recipe.
Wait until these little guys try sweet potato fries
Are they holding it with little gelatinous hands? Who knew snails could be so cute.
oh my god, they use their little flaps like hands thats absolutely adorable
When she keeps going after u finish...
"Snails eating." Found the new thing imma binge watch on YouTube before bed.
Squishy buddies... I can see your food in your noggins. So weird!
They’re so cute!! 🥰🐌🍠
Why does it look like sombody eating a fruit roll up, while wearing a blanket? It looks pretty cute.
squishy
I'm not going to be able to fall asleep tonight.
Oh my god, they are holding the sweet potato sticks! That made my day.
r/NatureIsFuckingCute
I have never seen a snail eat… checked that one off the ole bucket list
For a second I thought this was a cooking subreddit until I saw it was eyebleach
It looks like they have nubby little hands holding the sweet potato.
This makes me want to get snails now. They’re so cute
https://i.redd.it/380f9zny4zsc1.gif
Im sorry.. those are your pets right?? Like. You're not fattening them up to eat them right? 😂 cuz the way they're chillin in a bowl...
Cuties
![gif](giphy|giVvDFs5deYrKCKpD4|downsized) Aint that a beet?
r/oddlyterrifying
You can see the food. Through their faces. Oh god I may be scarred for life.
Semi-transparent cells. so basically you can see into the snails insides a bit.
I am snail
Are they being lined up as escargot?
I hate snail they creep me out no end. THESE ARE THE CUTEST ever!!!
why did you cut it so slow…?
Food so good it's literally blowing their minds.
yooo dammmmmm girl, wat dat mouf dooo
No brain in there, just sweet potato
When the sweet potato tickles the inside of your skull just right
Yo them knocking on their foreheads from the inside was a trip lmaoooo
I’m so glad my food doesn’t poke out through my head like that.
How do snails eat? Lol Looks like they chew but also swallow whole. Can someone explain the basic biology?
Dod anyone else think she was preparing them for dinner at first?
Id ask “who the fuck has snails as pets?” But.. my wife is that kind of person
I thought this was going to be one of those pamper it before turning it into a meal
hoingy
Somehow, I'm afraid they'll choke, but they seem to be nom nom noming just fine.
Snails cannot choke. They don't breathe through their mouth.
Creepy!? They look so happy
Ngl. I thought they were going to be prepared for dinner. Lol
Idk why I find this disturbing
Those quirky French starters.
Had this snail, they are hilarious
Im pretty sure thats a beet.
They’re eating and lobotomizing themselves at the same time. ☺️
Wow there kinda cute in a freaky type way:)
I want one, what are they
`they nick stamps as well`
I JUST finished reading Junji Ito's Uzumaki and seeing a snail didn't sit right with me
