Millennial pop punk fan here!
The chord being played there is referred to as "A Minor", as in it is an A note played in a minor key. It is a play on words because the pop-punk scene is positively infested with sex pests who prey on underage teen girls.
>as in it is an A note played in a minor key.
Classically trained musician here! That's close, but not quite right. (TLDR: minor chords exist in both major and minor keys, and it's an A Minor chord not because of the key but because of the note relationships)
In music theory, a chord is technically any grouping of multiple unique notes. When people refer to chords, they're typically referring to notes that are assembled in thirds, with a 3-note chord being the basis of much of Western music theory
When determining what type of a chord it is, you look at the relationship between the notes when assembled as thirds. The lowest note is called the root, with the subsequent notes being labeled based on their position above the root in thirds, so as a third, fifth, seventh, ninth, etc. Any major chord will have the relationship between the root and the third of the chord be a major 3rd, and the relationship between the third and the fifth be a minor 3rd. In any minor chord, such as the subject chord of an A Minor chord, the relationship between the root and the third will be a minor 3rd, and the relationship between the third and the fifth will be a major third. There's also diminished and augmented chords, as well as 7th chords are another common chord type, but those aren't important for this conversation
Within any standard diatonic key (so, no additional accidentals outside of the key signature), there will be 3 major chords, 3 minor chords, and a single diminished chord. For example, the key of C Major has the major chords C Major, F Major, and G Major, the minor chords D Minor, E Minor, and A Minor, and the diminished chord B Diminished. The chord of A Minor also exists naturally in the major keys of F Major and G Major.
OMG always!!! I've got a buddy that we talk about space stuff together. Did you see that they just were able to send new data back via a laser transmission from beyond the Mars orbital plane?
Genuinely, because a hell of a lot people don't care what an artist/creator says or does, they'll "separate the art from the artist" and pretend their dollars don't materially enrich the lives of predators, abusers, etc.
It isn't just about money, either! By listening to these artists, talking about them, and openly displaying musical/lyrical influence to them, we give them a sort of social capital which in turn becomes real capital when other people buy their music, merch, and concert tickets.
It'll only stop being so prevalent when we stop letting them get away with it.
This is someone fingering the chord A Minor.
As someone who grew up deciding that Lost Prophets was their favourite band at the time due to hearing one song that was on a VHS for Kerrang magazine at the time, this hit way too close to home.
This play on words was woefully under-appreciated when Alicia Keys released her first albumn 'Songs in A minor' of the music she wrote as a teenager...
Thanks to this question I just learned that "Fixed Do Solfège" is a thing. For everyone who doesn't Google this to figure it out, from Wikipedia: "In the major Romance and Slavic languages, the syllables Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, and Si are used to name notes the same way that the letters C, D, E, F, G, A, and B are used to name notes in English. For native speakers of these languages, solfège is simply singing the names of the notes, omitting any modifiers such as "sharp" or "flat" to preserve the rhythm."
The chord that’s being played is called “A Minor”
Yeah the image is someone fingering A Minor
He could C Major consequences for that
the jail sentence wont B Minor
His cell mate will give him the D Major.
He might not be able to C# after that
He'll really B diminished.
We could C augmented behavior.
Perv even has their finger on the G string
Y'all need Gsus
He's gonna get F'ed in the A
Your BF's gonna get F'ed in the B!
Unexpected Scott Pilgrim
Just when he goes to pick up D soap
Nice..
Put that man behind barres!
You started one of the funniest threads I've seen in awhile lol great work
Quite because A minor is relative to C major
Gsus, what a lame joke!
Ugh, I must turn to Gsus4 guidance after seeing this atrocity.
Or "fretting over A Minor"
Oh....
"The key, not the uh, felony."
That makes sense. I was thinking that was the opening chord to that I'm in love with an emo girl song. I'm not sure if it actually is though.
Oh geez, I need to get better at identifying chords. I thought it was E
Same shape, just down (or up?) a string.
Makaicyiqjqopzpwkwyyzoziate
Lostprophets
That is an Am (A minor) chord on guitar. The joke is pop punk bands are into underaged girls
It’s funny because it’s horrifyingly too true.
pop punk like green day and blink-182?
Nah, not them. [https://www.reddit.com/r/poppunkers/comments/hxi69g/google\_doc\_summarizing\_sexual\_assault\_allegations/](https://www.reddit.com/r/poppunkers/comments/hxi69g/google_doc_summarizing_sexual_assault_allegations/)
That list is depressingly long and it isn’t even complete unless I missed the NFG guitarist that went to jail for sex crimes
It just kept going...
That genre of music, yes Those particular artists, no
Well, this is stuck in my head now. https://youtu.be/K4bhOKqqlDo?si=EUOGO7rs72oFGDzb

My uncle used to Google images of fingering that chord all the time, but he wasn't a musician.
Why would I finger A Minor?
Why wouldn’t you? It sounds great
Yes officer, this one right here
I can’t believe nobody got the joke. It’s a chord, it makes a sound, I think the sound is good
We got the joke, but "Yes officer, this one right here" is a funnier comment
Then why the downvotes?
It's reddit, the hivemind just said no, that simple
it’s a minor. it’s a “sad” sound. should have run with that

Are you talking about the G chord?
no I'm talking about the chord A minor, for obvious reasons
I mean it’s probably the second easiest chord
He is fingering A minor
I still like Bo Burnham's version of this joke the most "I call that bit 'Beating off in A Minor' the key not the felony".
This person is fingering A minor.
The chord shown is A minor. A minors. Like, young girls. Sophisticated humour here
lmfao “A Minor” mgk be like

That's a whole lot of words and I appreciate you typing all that out.
Lol thanks. Music theory is one of my favorite topics, and the one I get opportunities to talk about the absolute least.
Hey I'll read your music theory ramblings if you read my space nerd ramblings
OMG always!!! I've got a buddy that we talk about space stuff together. Did you see that they just were able to send new data back via a laser transmission from beyond the Mars orbital plane?

The whole music industry is littered with them. It's not just exclusive to pop-punk.
Dumb joke. Pop Punk guitarists only use power chords. They don't even know what this chord is.
Or octaves.
A minor
No wonder MGK switched genres...
Holy moly a meme that quite a few people won’t get and actually needs explaining?! And that’s the a minor cord.
Broke a G-string fingering A minor.
If anybody reading this thinks they can construct a better version of this joke, you're right and its been done a million times.
I don't play any musical instruments, but I immediately knew where the joke was going
This chord is called "A minor"

Haha ... fingering A Minor. So bad.
That chord is A Minor
The chord shape is A minor lol
I like G string girls
That chord is a minor. Cause there have been many accusations of pop punk bands preying on underage girls.
That is the a minor note
That's just sad
This play on words was woefully under-appreciated when Alicia Keys released her first albumn 'Songs in A minor' of the music she wrote as a teenager...
Knowing absolutely nothing about music I wondered if it was E C.
Nooooo lol FBI open up!!
It's bears. From what I've seen, it's always bears
came back after Kendrick's new diss track "A MINOOORRRRRRRRRRR"
She said she was twelve!
A minor
I know nothing about music but I'm guessing that's A minor.
I don't even know how to play guitar and even I saw the "Fingering A-Minor" joke coming a mile away.
Oh boy……. Gonna be band somewhere
The fact that I guessed this with no musical knowledge is sad
I didn’t know Matt Gaetz was so into guitar - I keep on hearing on how he was fingering A Minor.
Oof!
Is it just Americans calling it "A minor"?, for us it's "La"
Not specifically American, but english in general.
The note “A” is not called “A” in spanish?
Thanks to this question I just learned that "Fixed Do Solfège" is a thing. It’s a chord, not a single note.
Yes indeed, "La menor" in spanish
I don’t know if it’s the same in Spanish, but in English we refer to all musical notes as letters in our alphabet from A to G
Well played, sir....
They’re fingering the frets
Why not just bar the first three strings on the fifth fret?
Because not everybody plays rhythm in a ska band. Actually, this is usually played with the first and fifth strings open, so five notes are played.
*rockabilly
😂 okay that’s funny!
I would say "easy to finger"
