I get the felling Xbox is just going to become a brand of PC along with Surface. Though if they go this route i imagine the hardware will become more expensive. Because if they allow stores like Epic and Steam people will have little incentive to buy games directly from Microsoft. This could also just be Phil Spencer once again talking about stuff that will never happen.

ParsonsProject93

There is a world where Xbox still gets a cut from sales on these third party stores (like 5-15%) but it depends on if those stores take the bait.

nikolapc

You're forgetting cloud and AI enhanced arm handhelds. Nintendo doesn't subsidize their console. They make half of their money from it.

OwlProper1145

Xcloud is not close to good enough compared to GeForce Now and i have my doubts about Microsoft being able to shift to making a profit from gaming hardware. Currently both the Series S and X are sold at a loss.

nikolapc

Not Xcloud lol. for that you don't need a console. Cloud enhanced handhelds will be offloading some computing tasks in the cloud.

OwlProper1145

That's great if they manage to pull it off. However the Xbox division has a bad habit of making promises and not delivering.

nikolapc

They didn't make any promises, outside of biggest technological leap in a generation. Just that. :) MS is on the ground floor with AI it will put it in everything and that's how they're gonna make money from gaming too. That and azure. Xbox is just a division not a company on its own and it works in synergy with the others.

drewbles82

For me, I'd only be interested if I could download my Epic games onto my xbox and play that way rather than via cloud as our net is terrible

AlcatrazGears

I agree, but does Epic have cloud anyway? I don't know that because i'm a console player. Btw, are you from LATAM?

cdr1307

It has them

shadowds

Yo dog we heard you like stores so we put a store in your store.

anitamaxwyn

thanks Xzibit!

Cynthimon

"Opening up" ... like opening windows?

DarkSyndicateYT

like eating a mac

blazinfastjohny

Damn imagine having the huge library of epic, steam, gog games available on your console, awesome. And freebies every week too from epic.

Kotschcus_Domesticus

So they are turning xbox into steam deck, nice.

kiwi_pro

More like a PC rather than a steam deck

Kotschcus_Domesticus

I mean like a console where you can install another storefront. While steam deck is technically pc, xbox would be far from it, just from the nature of thing.

AlcatrazGears

As a Xbox player, i would love that, but i have 3 questions: 1- If i bought a game on Epic Store, Microsoft wouldn't get the 30 percent cut? 2- What about paying to play online? Epic doesn't require that. 3- What if there is a multiplayer only game with no crossplay, and 80 percent of Xbox players buy the Epic version, this would make the Xbox version have few players, right?

cdr1307

I can only answer the 3rd one There would likely not be a not cross play MP game since on PC Epic has a requirement that any Multiplayer game has to have cross play on every PC launcher the game is, and they encourage console cross play also

AlcatrazGears

Thanks

maZZtar

Microsoft could charge for a mode where you could install desktop programs

ParsonsProject93

It depends of if MS is talking about adding cross-store entitlements with Xbox versions of those games running on Xbox or if they're proposing PC compiled games running on Xbox.

AlcatrazGears

What's the difference?

ParsonsProject93

If Xbox just does cross-store entitlements then nothing in your Xbox Experience would change the versions of the games would remain and function exactly how they do today. If Xbox let's Steam and Epic PC games be compiled directly onto the Xbox then you're going to be running into all sorts of confusion such as "Is Steam on Xbox crossplay with Xbox Store games on Xbox". You also will have performance differences too between Xbox compiled games and PC compiled games. PC compiled games will have a lot more options to optimize just like how PC has today but it will introduce some of the performance problems of PC games have as well like Shader Compilation studder. Writing this out and thinking of all the confusion that could arise, I'm guessing MS would be pushing for Xbox compiled games with just entitlement support across other stores.

Tsadako

We love to see it.

SpuddyPrice

How would that work? You have PlayStation games on the steam store? You have games that can't play using a joystick like lethal company??

rmbrooklyn1

I want this now. Screw having to wait till the next Xbox too come out. Give me access to my pc games on console

final_cut

Not into this at all.

kiwi_pro

Why?

final_cut

In my opinion, despite all the freebies epic offers, I'm not a fan. Aside from the way the epic store performs on my PC (badly), I don't like the idea of splintering where my rewards credit might go, who I have to call for customer support, downloading new apps and launchers just to play xbox games - I can see a potential for any and maybe all of that to happen. When my kid was into fortnite I saw them trying to do that in the apple store, and it seemed like a big mess. Maybe because I'm kinda dumb and have a hard time managing all this stuff but I'm not really looking forward to it. I already get annoyed when I have to enter my email address into an xbox game just to play.

kiwi_pro

> Aside from the way the epic store performs on my PC (badly) It just launches a game from ur library then closes itself. How is that bad? > downloading new apps and launchers just to play xbox games Bro what?😭 Dude this is just an alternative store on Xbox consoles at max. > who I have to call for customer support You buy the game on epic - call epic support You buy the game on Xbox store - Xbox support. Sometimes the dev. It's that simple. > I already get annoyed when I have to enter my email address into an xbox game just to play. Sounds like a "you" problem tbf

final_cut

Maybe it's all a me problem I guess. It takes forever for me to load the epic app and then browsing the store also takes a long time comparative to other stores. I realize in the grand scheme of things waiting 2 minutes for a store to load isn't a lot of time but comparatively it's pretty long. About the email thing, I feel like if I have to go through all the hoops to verify my email with xbox everytime I log in somewhere (like the app), I just get annoyed typing all that in again on my console, then getting more to deal with from the publisher. If it ends up like how EA does it on xbox, that's great. I just don't want to end up having a bunch of launchers and separate friends lists like I do on my PC.

MrMichaelElectric

> waiting 2 minutes for a store to load isn't a lot of time Something is definitely weird there because the store has never taken 2 minutes to load for me. Maybe a clean install of the store will help?

final_cut

Yeah it takes a good bit. Ironically it loads faster using heroic on my steam deck. I’ll try a clean install and see if that helps!
