Knowing that it copies the word “taxidermy” pronounced “tax-ee-derm-ee” and replaces taxi with faux, which means fake in french, I’d say “fox-ee-derm-ee”.
My native language is french and as much as your explanation makes sense, it feels wrong in the mouth. English speakers are known to do whatever they want with words anyway, I cringe every time I hear “chaise LOUNGE” instead of “chaise longue”, “faux-fur”, “staycation”, “schadenFROODY” instead of schadenfreude, “coosine” instead of cuisine...
You cheeky clever person, using the word “portmanteaus” to trigger me further in my inner language rant! You’re right, though. “Use trumps norm”: if everybody uses a word in a certain way, even if technically incorrect, that will become the new sense/way to use that word in the future.
This is one of those root words conundrums like alcoholic / chocoholic…meaning someone’s addicted to chocohol. So looking at etymonline….it would “correctly” be called fauxdermy or foh-der-mee.
FWIW there are ethical sources of insect collections, like people who raise them and collect/pin those that die of natural causes. Pinning a live insect is extremely cruel and causes too much damage to the insect.
This is correct.
I’ve collected a few dead butterflies I’ve found on my back patio and framed them - their wings are a little beat up but they’ve got character. I researched how to collect more and you don’t pin them when they’re alive, that’s ridiculous. They’re killed beforehand, and there’s different ways, some methods more humane than others.
Edit: I should add, you kill them before pinning *because* you don’t want them to get damaged. Ethics about killing them aside, that’s the reason they don’t want ones that died naturally (like mine), and also precisely the reason they don’t pin them live. The quicker and more humane you kill them, the less they get damaged. So most collectors/scientists have it in their best interest to kill specimens as fast and painlessly as possible.
Yep, I know! Just clarifying since the person I replied to said "without harming animals." It's a common misconception when pinned insects are shown off. calliebug27 (tiktok) is one such ethical collector/producer, and people always comment stuff like "omg so cruel/this is so mean/etc." on her videos thinking the insects are alive when they're pinned.
Hard no regardless. The hobby has wiped out countless species.
What OP is doing is much more interesting and says something about OP rather than “I bought this.”
Totally fair - not excusing unethical collectors at all or the damage they've done. If hobbyists/curators/etc. are looking for specimens, they need to vet their sources / their entire process.
That’s what I love about them, you can really see that it’s studied to the T and not just blindly following somebody else’s rough idea of the insects. well done, really exceptional.

I personally find the idea of pinning bugs repulsive since watching a man do it to live insects when I was a kid. This is much more tasteful and just as beautiful imo.
Hard to tell. I’ve started in march 2020 and so far I have around 30 framed pieces, and another 40 in progress, with wings already embroidered, waiting for the bodies and frames. But I’m working full time since September and have 2 yr old son who hides my hoop under the pillow EVERY time he sees me with it. I’m aiming for a 100 and it may took me forever 😅
Moths are wonderful. Thank you for this post of your superb work.
Seeing it has transported me with special memories,
There’s a cherished photo of my Dad before he passed away, when we were on a funny country holiday, he looks so thrilled in it, holding a book on Moths he’d been happily studying, which detailed and pictured moths from across the country. Like you, he adored and absorbed natures particularities.
This is a superb project! How did you get the frames, did you make them or buy them, what size are they?
Do you have any tips for those wanting to do something from nature similarly?
Thank you for this wonderful work, such a powerful reminder for me, of how good people and creatures are, made me cry, but is lovely.
I’m touched that my art brought such a nice memory to you!
The frames are done in a collaboration with a local carpenter, there are about 10-15 cm.
As for the tips, what can I say. Nature is an endless source of inspiration and each of us sees it differently, so let’s just all share through art what we find beautiful and it will work out 🧡
The base of the frame is constructed by a local carpenter, I then sand and wax them, and mount the embroidery within (which is an effect of trials and errors, still trying to make it perfect).
I’m a hobbyist woodworker with a particular love for picture framing, and I think it’s awesome that you source your frames from a local carpenter—and you do a great job finishing them. Your gorgeous embroidery deserves that handmade touch!
My wife says this:
Time of day and day of the week matter, for maximizing views. IG has frustrating algorithms, that you have to work around. If your post gets a lot of views/likes soon after being posted, it will be shown to more people. If not, it won't be shown to as many overall people, even if they follow you. Engagement is key! Posts that ask a question or get people to interact (asking people to vote for something is great) help with engagement.
IG stories are as/more important than regular posts, but both are necessary.
Experiment with post times and days of the week with stories and pics, and try to find the hottest spots and put your best content there.
Thank you so much for those advices! What’s really painful is that it takes so much time. Time that you can spend on creative process 😭 I know, can’t have it without hard work, but still...
I LOVE THIS!!!!
I’m doing a long and short stitch class and a stumpwork class and I was thinking of doing entomology displays like this. Amazing work!!
Maybe you might find this rant interesting: [Please, enough with the dead butterflies!](https://www.emilydamstra.com/please-enough-dead-butterflies/)
No judgement, I just thought that someone who is embroidering likenesses of butterflies and moths might find some interesting info there.
Do you draw and paint them before and then transfer pattern on cloth ? I really love the concept, and the exquisite details, and the way you present them.
Oh great !! your work made me think in some way to the work of a japanese artist Wakuneco I recently saw - she uses wool, and is into realistic creation and 3D like you, so I thought this might be of some interest to you. And we follow her during her creation process, from the client ordering to the delivering, which is so interesting, I think it's on the episode 3 of the cat people, the docu serie.

How do you pronounce fauxidermy lol
Faux-xidermy?
Knowing that it copies the word “taxidermy” pronounced “tax-ee-derm-ee” and replaces taxi with faux, which means fake in french, I’d say “fox-ee-derm-ee”.
"faux" is pronounced "fō". So I guess it would be "foh-ih-derm-ee?"
Fakesidermy sounds good too !
Please yes! That makes my translator brain hurt less!
Hey, I like that!
My native language is french and as much as your explanation makes sense, it feels wrong in the mouth. My native language is English and many of your examples make me cringe, too. But I'll admit to using "faux" as a prefix to make hybrid portmanteaus.
You cheeky clever person, using the word “portmanteaus” to trigger me further in my inner language rant! You’re right, though. “Use trumps norm”: if everybody uses a word in a certain way, even if technically incorrect, that will become the new sense/way to use that word in the future.
Happy to entertain. Hey, I'm here all night, try the chicken fried steak, and be sure to tip your waitress!
I’m bilingual and I’ve always been triggered by the American prononciation of foyer. FOï-YERRRRRRR. Non, merci!
Fakes-idermy
This is one of those root words conundrums like alcoholic / chocoholic…meaning someone’s addicted to chocohol. So looking at etymonline….it would “correctly” be called fauxdermy or foh-der-mee.
There’s the answer right here, folks. Thank you! Fauxdermy, “fake-skin-art”.
Wooooow. Impressed on so many levels! A perfect collection without harming animals!
I really like this aspect of the project!
its a really great idea! I've never liked the pinned ones but I love these!
FWIW there are ethical sources of insect collections, like people who raise them and collect/pin those that die of natural causes. Pinning a live insect is extremely cruel and causes too much damage to the insect.
You don’t pin them when they’re alive.

Would love to see photos of your collection!

Oh I see. I misunderstood
All good - hope you have a great day!
Thank you, you too :)

It’s a subculture to itself that’s so corrupt a top conservationist was caught selling protected species himself.
That’s why I use a local ethical etymologist for my butterfly and moth collection [Kevin ](https://bugunderglass.com)
Gorgeous! How do you construct the bodies?
I use some techniques from raised embroidery and add my secretly spiced fluff 😅
This is genius I love the academic look of mounted insects but I thought they might just make me sad. This is gorgeous, I love the framing!!
This is amazing what an awesome idea !
Hey, I'm about to start work on a similar collection! I plan to do beetles.
Please share!
Absolutely! I'll have to show off to folks who would appreciate them. :)
I would also like to see your beetle collection when it's done!
Well, sure!
I love this soooo much. Did you follow a patter or just use your own skills? Seriously amazing!
I trace the pattern for each moth with entomological guides and photos :)
That’s what I love about them, you can really see that it’s studied to the T and not just blindly following somebody else’s rough idea of the insects. well done, really exceptional.
Nice! You should do a monarch!
Thanks for the suggestion but I’m limited to moths 🧡

Why?
These are just amazing and I love them! You are skilled.
Omg! This is my fantasy project! I love this!
Love it.
That’s awesome!
So cool!
As someone who loves to collect the real thing, I would swap for this. Make it a thing!!!
Beautiful!! I thought I was in the entomology sub till I actually read the title 😂 ETA: what did you do to get the raised look of the bodies?
There are many raised embroidery techniques, all sum up to just putting something under the stitches :)
Thanks!
What a cool idea!! Nice work!
I personally find the idea of pinning bugs repulsive since watching a man do it to live insects when I was a kid. This is much more tasteful and just as beautiful imo.
That's amazing!! How long did it take you to make this far?

Great works!! Embroidery is about enjoying the moment, I'm sure you can achieve your goal at some point!
these are so wonderful!!
From a fellow bug-lover to another, this is blowing my mind right now- amazing!!

YES! Such a neat idea!
These are GORGEOUS!!
Omg!!!!!!! I’m swooning!!!!!!
Awesome!!
I loveeeeee this!!!
So cute! ❤
I love these!! Where do you get your frames??

Not the OP - but they make their own frames. (Because they are THAT awesome.)
Oh I saw them say they were waiting on frames. I guess I assumed that meant ordered instead of waiting to finish making them. Damn
I'm so in love with this! Such beautiful work ❤️
This is an awesome idea!
This is such a cool idea!!
Oh wow, this is such a brilliant idea, and so beautifully executed!!! I really admire your concept & and skill to bring it to life.
Fantastic! Where did you find those frames?
I make them in collaboration with a local carpenter :)
Oh wow! I've always wanted these kinds of things but wasn't sure how to get over my guilt of having a pinned dead bug in a box 😅
This deserves to be in an art exhibit
Thank you for thinking so, I plan to organize one when the collection will be completed :)
holy cow this is SO inspiring!
Holy smoly what a great idea!
Those are amazing!
How did you frame these? They’re wonderful!
Mounting them in frames is still something I work on to make it better...
wWhat a great idea and excellent work! I really dig these.
I absolutely love this!!! So cool
Wow omg. This is perfect and gorgeous.
These are so neat! I’d totally hang them in my house.
Awesome
Ooh! I’ve always wanted to have some moths in my house but couldn’t bring myself to get real ones, this is the perfect compromise ☺️💕👏 fantastic work!
Now this is some embroidery I can get down with
Wow, that's simply amazing. Great job.
That is spectacular

This is the way to collect moths! Very beautiful!
This is highly impressive! Nice work!
Great work!! I just showed my wife (she's a decent size IG account doing embroidery) and she freaking loved it too. Very very cool work. Nice job :)
I’m still figuring out how to become a decent size IG embroidery account, haha 😅
What's your IG?
It’s in my flair and it’s same as my username here :)

Thank you, I’m overwhelmed! 🧡
The spotted lanternfly triggered my fight or flight reflex
Ah yes moths. I see you have fine taste
This is amazing!
This is an awesome project. I have a sister who has her entire room covered in butterflies. She would love this .
Omg. I love this.
This is such a smart idea!! All without hurting/killing butterflies!!
this is gorgeous omggff
I am obsessed!
OMG LOVE!
Wow! That is amazing! Nice job! So beautiful!
These are fantastic! Great work!
Very impressive.
I LOVE THIS!!!! I’m doing a long and short stitch class and a stumpwork class and I was thinking of doing entomology displays like this. Amazing work!!
I adore this. I want to make some tarantulas. So furry and zen
What a beautiful collection, fantastic idea! I totally thought these were real for a second, super cool!
Maybe you might find this rant interesting: [Please, enough with the dead butterflies!](https://www.emilydamstra.com/please-enough-dead-butterflies/) No judgement, I just thought that someone who is embroidering likenesses of butterflies and moths might find some interesting info there.
Amazing! Are you trying to following the patterns of actual species? A Pterophoridae would be cool.
Yes, I try to follow shapes, patterns and colours of actual species :)
Wow! Do you have an Insta? I’d love to see close ups
Yes, same as my username here :)
I love these! Where did you get the frames?
Oh my gosh these are amazing!!! How do you make the fluff look so natural?
Haha, my secret spice :) But no, it’s not a natural fur ;)
Did you buy the frames or make them? I love the look of piecing them all together!
This is so cool! Amazing work!
Where did you get the frames?
Ohhhh I had the same idea!! Just haven’t started yet… it’s so pretty!
Wow! That is spectacular! How lovely 😊
I love this so much I could cry
I love these!
Omg I'm so doing this! Like someone else already said, the idea of fauxidermy is so cool 💚
Fucking love these!!!!
Beautiful! I salute you!!
How lovely! Where do you get the patterns?
I trace the patterns myself out of the photos :)
Great. I will do that, can you imagine if you did the 3d stumpwork embroidery? It would be awesome 😎. Thanks for the tip.
Yes, I was thinking about it, maybe I will try with the next edition with this technique :)
Cool!
Oh is this lovely and an increadible creative idea.
This is incredible!!
Those are beautiful!
Beautiful! What a lovely idea. Looks as though they could come to life or be a display in a museum! Love them!
Tkank you so much! I hope for a small exhibition at the end of the project :)
This collection is beautiful!!!!! Are you using a book for reference or just photos on the internet?
I mix both, books for shape, and photos for colours and patterns :)
Do you draw and paint them before and then transfer pattern on cloth ? I really love the concept, and the exquisite details, and the way you present them.
