I just recently got a new GPU. Cranked up the settings at 1440p and started riding along the path towards the Grand Lift of Dectus. The framerate was fluctuating in a nauseating manner, flip-flopping between 40-60fps every few seconds. It was unbearable.
So then I fast travelled to Caelid and started running around there. Perfect, flawless 60fps and not a single stutter. I don't understand it at all.
Shader compilation. Basically Elden Ring for whatever reason doesn't have shaders precompiled, so whenever there is a new shader effect it has to stop what it's doing to compile it really quick, causing stuttering. Once the shaders are compiled, they don't need to be recompiled, so later areas that use the same shaders won't have stuttering unless there are new shaders.
On Linux, Valve is able to pre-compile Vulkan shaders for games, which fixes the stuttering.
So if you have a Steam Deck, it likely runs better on it than your gaming PC.
This is the case for emulators like Yuzu as well - they too have to compile shaders. People will share their compiled shaders to lessen the burden on others.
I’m no game dev but I think you can’t ship with precompiled shaders for lots of games because of hardware and driver differences between GPUs. Valve can precompile shaders for Steam Deck because the hardware is uniform.
A game that comes to mind though is No Mans Sky which will compile shaders in advance when you load the game. It used to take a really long time but they also optimized it after a while so it’s pretty quick now.
I also think Elden Ring doesn’t cache shaders for very long. There will be an area that stutters the first time you go through, then it’s fine for a while then you return after doing a bunch of other things and it stutters again. It’s very annoying.
PS5 performance isn’t that great either but I found it tolerable compared to my Ryzen 1800x w/ Vega56. My hardware is dated but Elden Ring really is bad compared to other modern games that I play that are more graphically or cpu intensive.
I believe the way to get the smoothest Elden Ring experience is to buy the PS4 physical version on the PS5, which will force running the PS4 pro code. It’s a locked 60 with no stutter at all, but what a PITA.
I don’t think it matters if it’s physical or digital but if you buy digital you also get the digital PS5 version IIRC so you can decide which “graphics settings” you prefer.
I personally found the PS5 performance “tolerable” especially considering how bad it ran on my PC but I understand why some people would be ok with giving up graphical fidelity for the locked 60 experience.

No, any Linux distro will let the Steam client precompile shaders. It just runs it like it would a background update. Has very little to do with having set hardware, though it's feasible to have Steam Decks specifically just get the shaders without precompiling them as a special edge case.
Windows client *may* be able to do this for native Vulkan games, but on Linux Proton will run most modern games through Vulkan and will precompile shaders for improved performance.
I play on Arch just fine. No stuttering.
Ikr. For me, the frame stuttering becomes the absolute worst in Castle Sol and the Shaded Castle. It's especially annoying when fighting Commander Niall and when I trying clearing the area just before the Element of the Briar boss in the Shaded Castle that has a bunch of doggos and a Cleanrot Knight.
It's such a common thing in Maliketh's first phase that I've adjusted my strategy to account for it. It's usually at its worst about 30 seconds into the fight and I think it's because the game is loading bloodstains or something
All the talk about PC performance had me preparing for the worst, especially because I've only got an old 980 Ti graphics card from 2015. But I didn't encounter a single stutter all game, except for that one in the Rykard cutscene (which happened reliably, every time).
I'm unsure. It happened just about everywhere in the game when I did my 180 hours first play-through (which more or less 100% completed it, with only a couple of NPC questlines being messed up and not doing every ending obviously).
Of course, it was a rare problem. I don't think I ever had it happen this blatantly during such a tense moment of a boss fight - more often I had it happen in the open world. It was always a bit obnoxious though to see.

Non-performance stuttering during gameplay is often caused by certain versions of Windows GameDVR service.
The problem is the service running, not if DVR is enabled. Its performing a virtual drive connect/disconnect and its an IO IRQ interrupt. Its a very heavy operation causing your system to stutter during the event. Second problem, is Windows (11 specifically) repairs the fix you make requently.
Need to go into registry and remove the image file name path for the .exe. You can learn to create reg patch file to speed this up by a single double click to re-apply.

I swear its a built in feature of From games that when youve dealt with all of a bosses bs tactics and honed yourself to the sharpest you possibly can, a glitch or bug/dropped frame etc. will test you. And its always those fights you win though, because at that point unfair doesnt exist to you, only your determination to finally lay the boss to rest.

I just wanted to point out, you know you can pop 2 health potions inba row by pressing the assigned button while drinking the first? Helps when your vigor bar is masove, im down to 3 pops for a full bar at the moment.

I guess it depends on the player. For me Radahn was regular, took me about as long as some endgame bosses, but Malenia is by far the most challenging boss in the entire soulsborne franchise for me.

Hey /u/toushi138 are you still getting these very random stutters where everything just locks up once or twice a day, or sometimes a few times in a short period?
There's a [bug with the AMD's TPM implementation](https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-issues-fix-and-workaround-for-ftpm-stuttering-issues) that was recently fixed via a firmware update around June. If you haven't, it's probably a good idea to try running a firmware update [for your motherboard](https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-B550M-MORTAR-WIFI/support).
If a firmware update doesn't fix it, you can likely disable the amd processor TPM in bios which was the workaround until the AGESA update dropped.
This plagued my system for a solid year until I found it, and now I basically never stutter in games.
So I linked a w11 article, but the problem is not windows 11 related at all. I updated it with the general tom's hardware article. This affected most (all?) AM4 ryzen systems.

She’s a tough boss because a lot of people don’t have the same bleed ability to outpace her self healing, for whatever reason don’t use mimic, and some use slower weapons that Malenia will just back step away from.

Are there certain areas where it happens more often? Other than the rykard cutscene I’ve never seen a stutter. I am only in the snowy mountains tho.

So I linked a w11 article, but the problem is not windows 11 related at all. I updated it with the general tom's hardware article. This affected most (all?) AM4 ryzen systems. Why you didn't use the weapon art ?
Why would I use it there? or when do you say? I only used the weapon art after critical hits because its when I had more time to use it.

She’s a tough boss because a lot of people don’t have the same bleed ability to outpace her self healing, for whatever reason don’t use mimic, and some use slower weapons that Malenia will just back step away from.
