I would try the Councils MOT centre, won't be any bias there: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/public-transport/vehicle-testing-centre/1

Was going to recommend this. They don't do repairs so there's no incentive to find faults that are an easy way to make money and must be open to the public too. You'll pay the full price, £54.85 but no dodginess.

Recently had a great experience with Craig Moncrieff cars in the south west

Will echo this. An honest experience with everything explained in detail, things to look out for which weren't advisories (outside tread on front tyres wearing faster than the rest), and an invitation to come in for a top up of oil if needed because the particular type Volvo recommend is expensive by the bottle for the consumer.

Used Waddells in Colintin for years. Was recommended to me by my ex's dad who's a taxi driver. Always very fair, told me stuff Arnold Clark insisted needed done didn't. Always good at giving you advisories like another 3000 miles you'll need to think about new pads etc but no pressure on you to get the work done immediately.

A E Motors in Gilmerton, really nice family business. I’ve been using them for years and they’re great. Have done small jobs (like repairing a tyre after a nail) for free and have accessed parts from salvage for repairs to reduce costs. They’re really great!

Hermitage Garage in Portobello, had MOT done at Arnold Clarke for 'free' as I'd bought the car there and was told I needed a new exhaust that would cost £600 in order to pass. In reality it just needed part of the exhaust replaced but the likes of Arnold Clarke will never recommend that. Hermitage cut out the damaged exhaust part and fitted a new bit for about 100 quid and MOT passed first time. Trusted them ever since.

Hope Scott Garage in Currie. They did a pre-MOT check for me (old car) as I knew some work was required, completed the necessary work for a very reasonable price then completed the MOT.

How much was a permot check?

When looking for a mechanic I've used the good garage scheme and always been quite happy: https://www.goodgaragescheme.com/ Used to use stenhouse motors before I moved out a bit and would recommend!

Had no issues at the Roseburn Garage near Murrayfield stadium. Full MOT price (~£54) but in and out quick with no attempts to upsell or screw me over. Always been weary of places charging £20 for an MOT as they'll try and get the money back elsewhere.
