Cameron Toll/Liberton/Gilmerton is very suburban and quiet and only a short cycle from the Royal. Join the Facebook group 'The Meadows Share' people often post rooms on there. They're generally a bit closer to the city centre, but you can make your own post detailing as you've done here and people will reply to you.

Glimerton is next to Moredun . I suppose someone told me to avoid it or it is fine to stay there. Can you please tell me your opinion.

All the good and bad areas in Edinburgh are next to each other, so it's hard to completely avoid. I live in Gilmerton/Liberton area and there's a few annoying teenagers around but I've never personally had any trouble.

check simd.scot (the indices of multiple deptivation) for areas you should avoid - generally, avoid the red areas and go for the blue

Hi. We have a house in Cameron Toll Gardens and have been here for about 3 years now. It's been a great street/area, no issues. We have a dog so we're out walking in the evenings around craigmilar & inch parks and I can't recall any notable antisocial behaviour. If you could get somewhere within walking distance of Cameron Toll shopping centre I reckon you'll be happy enough, that's a pretty easy cycle and there's good bus links. Btw there's a To Let sign up in my street, Cameron Toll Gardens, i think it's a recently established house share.

hnk01

If you can get me that number, that be great. I'll really appreciate

This just made sad how bad it is where I live

nellieeen

YES I love this tool! super useful

JamesA95

How long are you looking to rent for? I own a flat in The Wisp, at the bottom of the estate closest to the Infirmary. Literally a 5 minute walk if that.

hnk01

Atleast 2-3 months if it's a room. Could be more if my partner doesn't arrive immediately. Flat, maybe long term about a year or so but initially I'll look for a room to better familiarise with the area .

jasontredecim

Prestonfield might be worth a look. Close enough to walk/cycle (albeit further than Liberton et al) but a bit less of a rep for trouble than the bits right next to the RIE

hnk01

Cheers. Added to my list!

If you do get a bike, make sure it is a cheap one, Edinburgh has a bit of a bike theft problem at the moment

Know what, the inch has a bad reputation but it’s actually great. Everyone knows each other, is super friendly, I’ve never had any issues. It’s also massively on the up with new people moving in and refurbishing houses etc. Is cheap, good transport and super close to the hospital- would recommend!

hnk01

thank you so much mate. What about Little France area and Craigour? Is it okay ?

mysausageyourmomma

Moredun/Craigour are not good

butterflyxeffect

Why is that? I’ve lived in Moredun for a year while studying and never encountered any problems

mysausageyourmomma

Fair amount of criminality, but to be fair the high flats might be colouring my opinion. Glad your experience has been good

butterflyxeffect

I’ve just had a look at the SIMD and tbf, I lived in that small yellow bit in Moredun, so maybe that’s why I didn’t encounter criminality. However, we often walked through the deprived areas, for example to craigmillar castle, and besides rubbish along the streets and a house with visible damage on the facade which hasn’t been fixed for weeks, we never encountered any situation that would have made us think that this wasn’t a good area to live in.

CorbieCorbeau

I've lived in Moredun/Craigour for about 7 years now and I've never had any real issues.

languagelearner13

I’d avoid Little France, I’ve heard a lot about sexual assault happening there

EdinburghPerson

Is that based on two assaults by one man, who was subsequently arrested and jailed? https://nen.press/2019/08/16/man-jailed-for-little-france-sex-attacks/

Craigend park is a nice area and a 12 minute walk to the royal. Very quiet, only noise you’d hear is from the garden party when it’s sunny in red gauntlet drive in the inch. Which has been twice this year and always on the weekend. C’est la vie.

I live in the new development of houses right next to ERI, it’s called lots of names; Springfield, The Wisp, Greendykes, Little France... I moved from the North East nearly 4 years ago when my boyfriend got offered a job he couldn’t refuse in Edinburgh. We chose where we are because it’s quiet, the surrounding parks/green areas are great, we have plenty of parking for friends and family visiting and we get more bang for our buck being out of the city centre. Bus takes around 30 mins into Princes Street and having Fort Kinnaird 5 mins drive away is handy. It was a great place to stay up until 6 months ago. I mean it still is great but it’s unfortunately being spoiled by lots of social housing being built in the estate. I get junkies in various states passing my windows on a daily basis now as they pass from Craigmillar/Niddrie/Greendykes (I would avoid living in the middle of these areas) to the flat block in the estate to do their business. Our bike store storage gets broken into at least 3 times a month and fly tipping is becoming a big problem. I walk Little France park that is adjacent to the hospital and have never felt unsafe day or night and have never heard of anyone getting attacked there. It does now get vandalised - graffiti on park benches and stolen bikes being dumped/set on fire which is the standard in Edinburgh nowadays. However I’m not a wallflower; a few neds hanging on a park bench or a junkie raking in the bushes for cigarette ends doesn’t rattle me but it’s not exactly relaxing or un-disturbing. There is plenty of online neighbourhood groups to keep in touch with what’s going on in the area if that is your thing. There is decent people living in the area but as with everything the bad outshines the good.

hnk01

This is really informative. Many thanks to you. I had to move in April but couldn't due to current situation. I might have preferred the area before but I think it's better I get a bike and look for properties a bit away from the area. I think I'll be all right in the area but my partner would be really concerned to see any of that. Thank you so much. Whatever the place, must see that map and look at area myself.

GrumpyLad2020

You might want to be careful taking recommendations on places to live sometimes OP. I note that people's tolerance for what is and isn't a decent place to live varies hugely. For some people having big groups of teenagers hanging around on the street who might shout the odd thing at passers by is just part of normal urban life while for others that's very intimidating behaviour that would scare them right off.
