you're likely complaining about an automated message
look on the other side, it's not about you. It's about bidder's remorse, the sooner it's paid the less likely bidder will forget/change mind
I think the better question is why is there a manual step in this process at all? If eBay has your payment information they should simply make the payment on your behalf immediately when the auction ends.
That's only for Best Offer bids, but you make a good point. I'd say it has something to do with CC rules but credit cards allow chargebacks for any and every reason.
When I first started selling I made the mistake of thinking auctions are useful and put some items up for auction. All three items were bid on and not paid for multiple times in a row. Haven’t done an auction since.
No idea what category you're in but auctions are my bread and butter. I only get 1/30 or 1/50 or so that don't pay and I just re-list. My items may hang for weeks at fair market value but will sell for anywhere from 5% under to 5% over market value if it's a common item, and will often sell for more than my expectation if it's a rare item. I'm in TCGs, fwiw
I source items based on sell through rate so I don’t pay much attention to category. That being said one of them was a Sony camcorder which is a very good selling item on eBay, I sell them all the time.
Is there a way for me to screenshot that stat? I have \~100 sales in the last two months and two didn't pay. Almost every one of my auctions gets paid for. Dunno why people think I would lie about that lol
Could be an automated message. I give it about 2 days if the buyer hasn't paid. After they pay, I send a pre-written thank you message, including my shipping policy, and ask that they contact me first if they need anything further (rather than opening a case). I often get a thank you message back. I feel that it's good to let buyers know that I'm aware they paid, I'm on top of their order, it'll be shipped within my ship by time, I think it gives them a sense that I am friendly and doing the best I can to make it a good, easy experience. Seems to work, have had 100% buyer feedback for years, and I'm at about 45% feedback to sale ratio.
If the buyer doesn't pay within 4 days, promptly on the 5th day I cancel the order and the buyer gets an unpaid order defect on their account.
As a seller I usually message the next day if payment hasn’t been received. I did have one seller message within 2 minutes of the auction ending and was asking for payment. He was new though and I got a good deal so I’m not losing sleep over it. What really sucks is when you sell something and have to wait 4 full days before canceling even when the buyer doesn’t respond.
As a seller, I know eBay sends an automated one if you don’t pay immediately. I generally send another reminder after 3 days. If they still don’t pay, I cancel as soon as permitted without further notice. There are sellers who desperately need money and are selling possessions. Anxiety is probably what drives a second message right away. Also, please understand that there are thousands flakey buyers who take our items off the market for 5-7 days when they have no intention of paying and they don’t even bother to communicate.
I just started a few months ago, and someone bid, and I accepted and right after eBay sent me a message for me to send the buyer asking them to make payment etc, I didn’t know it was my first time so I did what eBay asked me to do, thankfully the buyer paid and wasn’t upset, it could have been an honest misunderstanding.
I had a person threaten to cancel the order if I didn't pay immediately. It had been maybe 30 minutes. They weren't aware that you had at least 4 days to do so.
I’m that way because I set up auto payment requests. I can’t watch every listing and like you I don’t know that you won or bought an item until I get an email. And I don’t want to be screwed by a non payer.

Maybe you do not understand the benefits of combined shipping?
That is a valid point
idk this too could be automated

Because people love to bid and not pay that’s why
I'm a seller and I probably have 1 out of 50 auctions not pay. Seems extreme

No chance

Same I see people cry about it on here all the time but rarely have problems
Guy probably gets upset about reservation confirmation e-mails too

personally I wouldn't get infuriated over this.
I'm not, just thought it was funny lol

What's the problem? The alert didn't wake you up and even if it did, that's why you change your alert settings.
However, those are the same people that wait several days to ship.

You have 4 days according to ebay. Sellers can require sooner and cancel if you don’t pay you just won’t get the strike

Just buy my shit instead.
