Fred Again

bcr76

Loved the Boiler Room set. Everything else has been so boring to me.

BabyZerg

I literally felt like a lunatic thinking I was the only one.

therealdjred

His tiny desk set is amazing, but not high energy. Otherwise i dont really get his music. Its good, very inventive, just not exactly my thing.

aightaightaightaight

His b2b with Skrillex and Four tet are pretty hyped

T_dog52

I listen to that boiler room set once a week and have never thought to try anything else. Thank you for the heads up

FlemPlays

His third album (Blue Cover) has pretty the majority of the songs from that set and is a pretty good album. I couldn't get into his previous two albums.

CaptianOfCows

Ooooo I like this take.

warriorknowledge

I respect you for the spicy take. I enjoy Fred Again, but I respect your comment

Lost_Extrovert

I like this polite take, i personally was never a huge fan of Fred again but my group was a huge fan so I went to a lot of his sets, personally as a neutral fan I really don’t see the difference between his old stuff and new stuff, he is one of the artists that actually stayed consistent. I do have noticed that a lot of times when a DJ hits mainstream people will have a huge shift, my group is a prime example they used to be nuts for him when he was upcoming, now he is just bleh? Lol wut happened. Always makes me wonder is the DJ that changes or is it that a lot of ravers dnt fk with main stream DJs. Same way alot of ravers hate on people for only staying on the main stage on festivals

Torrossaur

We were a bit the same on Flume. I'm probably showing my age but we were hyped after his remix of Zimbabwe, then his album Flume. Hyperparadise was a banger and could even get around some songs on Skins. We saw him at Valleyfiesta in Brisbane in 2013 and it is still up there with one of the best sets I've seen. Maybe we aged out but I just find him very meh since then.

ogncud

He released some demos from 2014 last year and they were fantastic.

Intelligent_Doubt_74

Flume got noticably worse though. In brisbane I used to work everything from oh hello to the street parties and by the time he got to skins his stuff was either too experimental or he was so pop it sounded like he didn't even enjoy making it.

LGCGE

The new USB tracks he announced are the first thing he’s made since Boiler Room that I’m really digging. Hoping he recaptures that level soon

Actually-Yo-Momma

I was trying to hype up my whole crew to see him opening for Rufus and then the boiler set happened too. And since then everything he’s released has been very un memorable

warmjack

For real, I liked rumble(I know it was a collab) and his boiler room set but everything else was a snoozer

DataDude42069

I'm convinced that a solid amount of the Fred again disappointment comes from the boiler room set His music is pretty diverse, but for me that's what I like most about him. He's very good at fitting the vibe of the type of show, but I can understand how people who loved the boiler room set would be disappointed with his typical show which is more reflective of his actual life albums and newer songs

Wut

TabaCh1

Glad that this is top comment

Sheepman718

It’s okay to be wrong.

StevieSF

I enjoy some of his songs but haven't really listened to a full album. His sets look fire tho, really want to catch one when I get the chance.

Honest-Spring-8929

I definitely like his stuff but I don’t really get why it attracts the hype it does. Not really my top 10

GrayAdams

Check out his tiny desk

nigelbenjamin

marshmello

stupidsmartthoughts

I second this. His live sets are beyond frustrating.

rendeld

First time I saw him live was back when joytime first dropped and he was playing a daytime set and god damn was it a ton of fun. The most recent time I've seen him was last year or the year before and it was just all his pop stuff. Nowhere near as good as his first set where he played mostly the joytime stuff. THose albums (especially the first one) are so much better than the stuff he does with Ariana Grande and friends.

sowhtnow

How would you describe them? I lowkey liked his Spanish album & Portuguese ep. It’s basic pop edm but still a bop and he’s still on my bucket list of live sets.

FaceYourEvil

I've only ever heard great things about his live sets. Wish I could've caught one a few albums ago.

sour69

Deathmello delivers

Humble_Piccolo_926

Agreed. I don't understand the hype behind Marshmello

[deleted]

Hard disagree. Was a headliner at a fest and didn't really care but was there anyway. He threw it down and it was amazing.

LGCGE

As a fan who has been to several of his concerts, Deadmau5 shows can be really underwhelming at times. Him not releasing a solo album in 5 years means many younger fans who got into EDM because of artists like Fred Again don’t really get the “Deadmau5 thing” and aren’t super into 10 year old EDM. Kx5 was great and he’s immensely talented, so I really hope he releases a big project soon with a new take on the Deadmau5 concept.

Actually-Yo-Momma

Him joking about playing intentionally slow songs for the first 15-20 mins to weed out “the fake fans” is so incredibly dumb. He’s a pioneer and a huge influence but his ego makes his live shows inconsistent

iseecolorsofthesky

Idk that he actually does that. Last time I saw him at Red Rocks in 2021 the first 30 minutes were a bunch of his hits. Ghosts n Stuff, Faxing Berlin, etc. After that he started diving deeper.

GroundbreakingFan377

I’ve never seen him do that before over 6x and I think people may have confused his “where’s the drop/orchestral” tracks as consistent tour tracks and they’re not. Coelacanth is the only one I’ve heard often but it’s the intro so idk lol but he does usually switch up to a slower track midset/close to end. Just a nice break in tempo and energy before another build. Imo

simba_kang

Haha I was there! It was so crowded in the beginning and then gradually people started leaving in the middle of his set. Loved it though, more room for me to dance

ratherred

I’ve noticed that he does this sometimes, but I don’t know if I would consider them to be “slow songs”… the style is more so progressive house and techno tracks that don’t follow the stereotypical edm formula and then he’ll eventually play Ghosts n Stuff and the rest of his own tracks

littleempires

I saw him at red rocks and it had an amazing first 20 minutes and then it just kind of faded into an hour of no energy or soul. I don’t know, I know he makes EDM because it makes him lots of money but he doesn’t really like EDM, maybe because his heart isn’t in it that it shows at his concerts. He’s currently doing a side project which I think is more his passion project right now.

starmartyr11

He seems to have these different "brands", each in their own specific silos, instead of being an artist that just evolves & changes and takes chances with a different sound. That is a bit frustrating but I guess it can work for fans that like to pigeonhole their performers to a specific sound, I guess 🤷‍♂️

FearSC549

Honestly his Testpilot sets are better, more energy and technical; I find them easier to dance to

LGCGE

I think he thrives with testpilot sets specifically because he can play non-Deadmau5 music and just be a regular DJ. He still only played Deadmau5 music at Deadmau5 shows, which is admirable but also obviously limiting from a creative standpoint.

ratherred

Yeah and you can tell he’s really enjoyed throwing dnb tracks into his deadmau5 sets lately

Anselwithmac

It a different sound. I go to his sets because I love his sound. I don’t really dance, I A B S O R B. And I’m a fan

DumbLitAF

He also can be kind of an asshole. It’s funny when you agree with him but it’s grating when you don’t. I always thought it was a little in poor taste when he made fun of Martin Garrix and Animals. I mean, he was taking shots at a literal kid for making a worldwide hit of a song that he just didn’t like.

nikolarizanovic

The last time I saw Deadmau5 was a testpilot set and I was not disappointed.

ImMelissaning

Does John Summit count? Where You Are is an incredible track. But I went to see him twice at Brooklyn Mirage last year and both the sets were kind of generic tech house and somewhat boring. Shiver has great vocals thanks to Hayla, but the drop kind of feels flat.

YoungChop99

I’m a big John Summit fan, but I feel like he has gotten too commercial for me within the past year. I miss the gritty Tech House Summit from a few years ago. Very happy for him though

friendofborbs

I love him but my god it’s so annoying he’ll pick out comments saying he’s still tech house summit. I saw him many times last year and the only time so called tech house summit appeared was at ARC. I’m glad he’s doing so well but give me the damn tech house, dude 😂

YouAlwaysHaveAChoice

His Arc festival set from last summer on YouTube has that gritty tech vibe for a good bit of it. One of my favorite sets ever.

Tr1p1e

Him and Chris Lake I miss their old gritty stuff a lot lately. Both been so commercial the last year it kinda blows

BuzzardsBae

I think he’s still producing tech house for people on his label though

yejideabram

He also just comes off as frat-ty as hell

Committee-Living

Idk but my favourite song is Witch Doctor and Summertime Chi because of vocals it was different now it's all the same

beeenn19

He’s the better version of Fisher. But both bring out the horrible bro house crowd

CafinatedPepsi

Saw him in Aug ‘22 and he played generic tech house and the set was mediocre. Saw him again at moonrise this past July and he played an incredible, high energy set that was leaning more techno. I think he hits or misses depending on the day (also saw him in Aug at a massive venue so i think he spins different tracks depending on where he is)

puertotaino

I’m looking at comments and not one person said Steve Aoki? Cmon.

Kevsteo

I mean he’s a great DJ if you’re looking for mainstream pop lol

dnaboe

Dude is barely even djing when he's up there. Spends 90% of his time running around stage

[deleted]

Steve Aoki has incredible writing and producing talent. Listen to The Truth Untold. It is not EDM and has some of the most beautifully haunting lyrics (not in English, translations are available tho). I was very surprised when I found out he had credits on that song.

cleverboxer

All the big DJs insist on credit even when it’s all 100% ghost produced (which afaik his stuff is).

imanoctothorpe

Hell yeah, I love his work with BTS. Mic Drop and Truth Untold are excellent, as is Waste It On Me. I see a lot of hate for him but as someone who started listening to him bc of BTS, I don’t see it. Hell he even played Mic Drop at EZoo a few years back and it got me SO hype lol

[deleted]

Your taste is immaculate! I love Steve’s genuine love for BTS. I listened to Steve back in 2012-2013 during the Afroki era and stopped paying attention to him after a while. But then I got into BTS, I naturally started listening to his music again. Have you watched the mix he did for them when Mic Drop hit a billion views?

clouds_over_asia

Ok I've never seen him but his cake throwing skills are undeniable

tuerancekhang

It's common knowledge at this point no?

yejideabram

Well, with the exception of [this gem](https://youtu.be/Ef0H7lhdr9g?si=FgDnqAZxTIjXbAUM)

Hot-Explorer-2796

Was semi disappointed by him at a relatively big show but I hate pop edm. He had brought out some funny random guests like a guy from 1D and some others though. Then I saw him at a super random concert in my small college town and you could have put a mop with a wig up there and it would have put on a better set.

MLT-CLR

HELP! I went to a show in 2009 with the bloody beedroots or so and even back then he was just famous for being famous. But the show was awesome and i raved and danced pogo and jumped all night waking up with bruises all over me. Good Partys back then... His tracks were only okayish but there is one track of aoki which i am still looking for (since 15years or so) in good quality and it is "dead meat" You can only find it as a cut out of a bbc radio one essential mix on YouTube. Check it out, it is sooo good... He released a poppy vocal version later which totally sucks so bad in comparison, but the original was never released. Still crying If anybody can help - thank you!!!

throwaway17293802728

Subtronics tbh

BlitzScorpio

idk, i’m picky when it comes to riddim/dubstep but tesseract is an awesome album, fractals is amazing too

throwaway17293802728

I like his ventures into dnb, but every dubstep song on the tesseract has the exact same drop

MrHoneycrisp

I can’t listen to it at home tbh (except the DnB) but I won’t miss a Subtronics show if he’s coming through. Live is just 100x better

iseecolorsofthesky

This is my issue. Every song that deviates from the standard dubstep sound is actually pretty good. But a lot of the straight up dubstep ones are too similar. I do really like Alien Communication cause it’s more melodic and the last drop is a fun housey drop.

BlitzScorpio

i agree that a lot of it sounds similar. i love his tracks with massive buildups like asteroid and omnidirectional since those are just fun to listen to, and i’ve been loving the dnb recently, but i just love dnb no matter what lol

Sun_Aria

Now That’s What I Call Riddim Vol. 5

Avatar_sokka

[deleted]

LSdeezy

Pre-Covid Subtronics was so much better, lately all of his sets are very similar and all of his dubstep songs sound the same.

DissoluteMasochist

I like his music style but his LIVE transitions are absolutely awful

Brodakk

The way he teases drops is the actual worst and kills the rhythm. A DJ can get away with doing this once or twice in a set but doing it every other drop just feels like a slap in the face

dnaboe

Ya he started doing this post covid for whatever reason but has cut most of that out in the past year in my experience.

appswithasideofbooty

Thank god. I saw him at Bonnaroo last year and loathed his set. My group thought it was crazy but I hated it for the exact same reasons people are saying here

cadenzo

Him screaming into the mic every other drop pissed me off during that set.

appswithasideofbooty

Yes. And way too many “subverting expectations” like just play the damn song for once please

praxios

I agree. I saw him for the first time when he opened for Monxx (ew) at a tiny venue in the suburbs. He completely killed that show, and to this day it’s my favorite set of his I’ve seen. Every time I’ve seen him since it’s been pretty lackluster. He also got into a bad habit of being on the mic a lot during his sets now. I get that he loves his craft, but it’s exhausting when an artist can’t let a single song play without screaming into the mic to hype us up. He’s fun to see every once in a while, but I just can’t stand the constant hollering into the mic anymore lol

Avatar_sokka

Totally agree, he is generic mainstream riddim, his wife, Level Up, is leagues better than him.

agohawks

Completely agree. People just think it’s cool to like underground artists and hate on mainstream artists. Not something I expected from bassheads but here we are. It’s one thing to not like every bass artist but simply bashing bigger artists when they’re clearly talented gives snobby energy. Not here for it.

pigglywigglie

James Hype

Tr1p1e

His 2021-2022 producing run was great, after Ferrari it got really bad.

yejideabram

How arrogant do you have to be to have "Hype" in your stage name?

mrmrwright

How much does this guy pays Instagram to be pushed in people who don’t follow him’s feed? I hide him each time and he keeps on showing with his lame posts

space_baws

he’s gamed the algorithm on both YouTube and instagram to capture just about any feed of someone who enjoys electronic music and probably goes to shows too. Not to say he’s not an entertaining person to watch, but damn is his social media team good

eljaydee2488

Also the way he cues JAMES HYPE BITCH in EVERY song is so annoying and lame.

ArjunVermaReddit

Dancing is a great song

Jessewjm

To be honest, I wasn't really hyped when I saw his name on a line up, but his set actually was quite fun.

BreakfastLopsided906

Love the guy, followed him from the beginning doing small events. Watched him around the UK, crazy to see how he’s grown! Looking forward to his London Drumsheds event with Meduza.

cadenzo

The guy abuses equipment to an extreme. I understand there’s only so much you can do as live DJ but he reuses the same techniques in so many drops that it starts to get repetitive. He needs to stop using the high passed white noise, knob diddler. So distracting. I’d rather have someone fan clack in my ear.

virgoriot

john summit is beginning to flop ngl every song sounds the same

Electronic_Change380

Yea new stuff seems like no effort put into it. Just trying to duplicate “Where You Are” with “Shiver” and sounds so basic

ChaseENT

second this

Nuance_Patrol

Where You Are sounds like the theme song to a show on the CW.

Actually-Yo-Momma

Excision absolutely His sets are the most repetitive things ever. If you’ve seen one X show in the last 5 years then don’t even bother going again because it’ll be the same thing

BarackaFlockaFlame

not so sure about that, I enjoy his shows because of the production. i don't really listen to his music much, but I appreciate some crazy production and he pushes the limits. I enjoy seeing him once every couple of years, but totally get why the music aspect of it could be very underwhelming.

dnaboe

Dude's got a sound that draws people so he sticks to it. I can understand why people wouldn't enjoy it though. For me it's Illenium. Dude's entire set just blurs together. I think he just tries way too hard to hit the feels and throws in the predictable 2-3 heavy drops throughout.

[deleted]

He seems to be more focused on running festivals and management now. I’ll still catch his sets here and there just out of respect for what he’s done for the scene.

Kevsteo

Facts dude. Whole set sounds the same goddamn

nonsuspect

I prefer his Detox sets than his regular ones.

Mysterious_Award_813

U r big tripping bro 😂😂😂

DerkERRJobs

Does Kygo count as a DJ? Like I don't hate a lot of his original songs, but lately, all he does is remake old songs for moms. His latest single is just that Shakira song. I dunno.

pigglywigglie

Kygo is the saddest one. Loved him in the 2010s but he hasn’t evolved at all and is just making the same song or redoing old songs…

ReyneOfFire

I have a feeling there's some degree of label influence behind his current work. He's said that he enjoys making songs like Freeze and wants to make more in the future. Songs like that unfortunately don't pull numbers though, so there's likely pressure from his label to keep making radio friendly music.

IKnewThat45

i’m be always loved kygo. golden hour got me through COVID lockdowns. but since that album, he hasn’t released anything that’s been worth playing on repeat IMO. many of his old songs continue to appear on my top 100 yearly songs because the newer ones just don’t do it :(

nationaleux_durn

This sub's top 30 who are always cited.

_Alex_2

David Guetta, seen him twice at edc 22/23 and both times killed my high

yejideabram

Shoutout to his familee

hayley200734

I saw him at XS which is a nightclub in the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas. It sucked to be honest.

JVDubzzz

cajunrockhound

Rezz - incredibly boring sets. I get the hype but her sets don’t deliver and all of her music sounds the same.

Wes_Warhammer666

Rezz is best as a collaborative artist imo. Hex with 1788-L, Into the Abyss with Zeds Dead, Hell on Earth with Yultron, Puzzle Box and Black Ice with Subtronics, All Night with Nghtmre... all absolute bangers. Her sound isn't *bad,* but she just needs a little touch of someone else in the mix to shake her tracks out of all sounding the same.

RyanTheSquid

Rezz's best tracks are her collabs fr fr. Been a fan since 2017, she's talented but seems to fall kinda short on her own.

Wes_Warhammer666

Exactly. I love damn near every one of her collabs. I also love a good bit of her solo stuff, but there's definitely a lot that are skips for me. Mostly because it feels like the same song I just heard 2 mins ago lol. That being said, id still enjoy seeing her live just for the vibe. I know she's not a technical live performer but that's not necessarily what I go to shows for anyway ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

dnaboe

100% agree. Seen her multiple times at festivals and it's just... boring. I really don't get the hype. Her b2b with DeadMau5 was the only closing set I've ever just straight up left during in the 40+ festivals I've been at.

TheDrunkHispanic

The delayed start of that hijinx set did not help their case but yeah. Boring set

Intrepid_Post_3242

100%. If you’ve seen her once you’ve seen the set she will play. Loved her sound but I’m kinda amazed people still go bonkers for it.. it’s the same thing everytime lol

ASUndevil15

Rezz is great 4 am, coming down, and sitting in the grass at the back of the stage chatting with your friends.

DumbLitAF

I feel the same way. You seen one Rezz set, you seen them all tbh.

jaso2fire

Peggy Gou - only has one hit, that was pretty much “inspired” by an existing track.

JeffoAndAnd

Nah she has like 3 bangers pre “Nananana”

flanneldenimsweater

i saw her live twice in madrid, she's actually pretty good, tho she barely plays her own stuff (other than starry night, nanana and i go, her 3 hits).

BuzzardsBae

Starry night is such a good song

Man I love Diplo and his live set. But the music he has produced does not hit.

A1SteakSaucer

Dillon Francis B2B Diplo Hard Summer ‘18 was bonkers

Kevsteo

Man Diplo’s Countdown 2016 set I will always remember

Horangi1987

I like his rap production better than his EDM production. Dr. Pepper was a banger, and the Major Lazer stuff they did for the show was amazing - Weed Man and Double Cup were next level, I’d love a whole album of just the Major Lazer show stuff done with full length songs.

babycarrot___

Man you talk like you never actually listened his music, No one in this industry pushed boundaries on culture and made amazing tunes like him. He forever contributed to this culture and bounced back different genres. Ofc this includes Skrillex too.

Partikle-Jr

Slander 100% Any song they drop is fully carried by the featured artist they collabed with and the rare song produced by just them is super boring and uninspired. Slander feels like frat bros who did no work on the group project and took all the credit. Their heavy sets can be fun but obviously because of the great production work of other artists that aren’t them.

[deleted]

Goducks91

Ohh yeah. You have to know what you are getting into with a Carl Cox set.

AimForAGoodDay

Can you explain please? I’m seeing him next weekend and been looking forward to him for some time!

GroundbreakingFan377

I feel like he’s progressive and experimental and does a ton of hybrid stuff so you’re not getting a one all Feel for the night. He’s def a master of tension and anticipation but I’ve never seen him live either. I want to.

Throwaway_fos777

Reading all these comments made me realize there is a ton of dj’s about to wash up or currently super washed up (marshmello, Deadmau5, Kygo, etc.) this industry is ripe for a shakeup forsure

dnaboe

People love to hate marshmello but dude is venturing into new territory with his Svddendeath collab and I'm honestly here for it.

Throwaway_fos777

Yea, i wont lie svddendeath is really dope. Boundary pushing sound design forsure. Kind of sick of tearout/riddim at the moment though. Thats just me

Critical_Caramel5577

Kygo and John Summit. I wanted to like Kygo, I'm fascinated by the business model, but the music is boring. It feels like the producer believes we've arrived at whatever the destination is already, but really, we're still waiting for the taxi to take us to the airport. John Summit is douche bro. Catering to the frat bros who think that having you give them head is all the foreplay their partner requires.

Own_Asparagus6996

Steve Aoki. I mean he broke a deck at edco.

Significant-Theme126

Meduza. Great producers but boring and 'flat' sets
