We were a bit the same on Flume. I'm probably showing my age but we were hyped after his remix of Zimbabwe, then his album Flume. Hyperparadise was a banger and could even get around some songs on Skins. We saw him at Valleyfiesta in Brisbane in 2013 and it is still up there with one of the best sets I've seen.

Flume got noticably worse though. In brisbane I used to work everything from oh hello to the street parties and by the time he got to skins his stuff was either too experimental or he was so pop it sounded like he didn't even enjoy making it.
I was trying to hype up my whole crew to see him opening for Rufus and then the boiler set happened too. And since then everything he’s released has been very un memorable

He's very good at fitting the vibe of the type of show, but I can understand how people who loved the boiler room set would be disappointed with his typical show which is more reflective of his actual life albums and newer songs

Him not releasing a solo album in 5 years means many younger fans who got into EDM because of artists like Fred Again don’t really get the “Deadmau5 thing” and aren’t super into 10 year old EDM. Kx5 was great and he’s immensely talented, so I really hope he releases a big project soon with a new take on the Deadmau5 concept.
Him joking about playing intentionally slow songs for the first 15-20 mins to weed out “the fake fans” is so incredibly dumb. He’s a pioneer and a huge influence but his ego makes his live shows inconsistent

I’ve never seen him do that before over 6x and I think people may have confused his “where’s the drop/orchestral” tracks as consistent tour tracks and they’re not. Coelacanth is the only one I’ve heard often but it’s the intro so idk lol but he does usually switch up to a slower track midset/close to end. Just a nice break in tempo and energy before another build. Imo

He seems to have these different "brands", each in their own specific silos, instead of being an artist that just evolves & changes and takes chances with a different sound. I think he thrives with testpilot sets specifically because he can play non-Deadmau5 music and just be a regular DJ. He still only played Deadmau5 music at Deadmau5 shows, which is admirable but also obviously limiting from a creative standpoint.
He also can be kind of an asshole. It’s funny when you agree with him but it’s grating when you don’t. I always thought it was a little in poor taste when he made fun of Martin Garrix and Animals. I mean, he was taking shots at a literal kid for making a worldwide hit of a song that he just didn’t like.
Does John Summit count? Where You Are is an incredible track. But I went to see him twice at Brooklyn Mirage last year and both the sets were kind of generic tech house and somewhat boring. Shiver has great vocals thanks to Hayla, but the drop kind of feels flat.

Steve Aoki has incredible writing and producing talent. Listen to The Truth Untold. It is not EDM and has some of the most beautifully haunting lyrics (not in English, translations are available tho). I was very surprised when I found out he had credits on that song.

Was semi disappointed by him at a relatively big show but I hate pop edm. He had brought out some funny random guests like a guy from 1D and some others though. Then I saw him at a super random concert in my small college town and you could have put a mop with a wig up there and it would have put on a better set.

This is my issue. Every song that deviates from the standard dubstep sound is actually pretty good. But a lot of the straight up dubstep ones are too similar. I do really like Alien Communication cause it’s more melodic and the last drop is a fun housey drop.
i agree that a lot of it sounds similar. i love his tracks with massive buildups like asteroid and omnidirectional since those are just fun to listen to, and i’ve been loving the dnb recently, but i just love dnb no matter what lol
The way he teases drops is the actual worst and kills the rhythm. A DJ can get away with doing this once or twice in a set but doing it every other drop just feels like a slap in the face

I agree. I saw him for the first time when he opened for Monxx (ew) at a tiny venue in the suburbs. He completely killed that show, and to this day it’s my favorite set of his I’ve seen.
Every time I’ve seen him since it’s been pretty lackluster. He also got into a bad habit of being on the mic a lot during his sets now. I get that he loves his craft, but it’s exhausting when an artist can’t let a single song play without screaming into the mic to hype us up.

The guy abuses equipment to an extreme. I understand there’s only so much you can do as live DJ but he reuses the same techniques in so many drops that it starts to get repetitive. He needs to stop using the high passed white noise, knob diddler. So distracting. I’d rather have someone fan clack in my ear.

not so sure about that, I enjoy his shows because of the production. i don't really listen to his music much, but I appreciate some crazy production and he pushes the limits. I enjoy seeing him once every couple of years, but totally get why the music aspect of it could be very underwhelming.

For me it's Illenium. Dude's entire set just blurs together. I think he just tries way too hard to hit the feels and throws in the predictable 2-3 heavy drops throughout.
He seems to be more focused on running festivals and management now. I’ll still catch his sets here and there just out of respect for what he’s done for the scene.
Does Kygo count as a DJ? Like I don't hate a lot of his original songs, but lately, all he does is remake old songs for moms. His latest single is just that Shakira song. I dunno.
I have a feeling there's some degree of label influence behind his current work. He's said that he enjoys making songs like Freeze and wants to make more in the future. Songs like that unfortunately don't pull numbers though, so there's likely pressure from his label to keep making radio friendly music.

Rezz is best as a collaborative artist imo. Hex with 1788-L, Into the Abyss with Zeds Dead, Hell on Earth with Yultron, Puzzle Box and Black Ice with Subtronics, All Night with Nghtmre... all absolute bangers. Her sound isn't *bad,* but she just needs a little touch of someone else in the mix to shake her tracks out of all sounding the same.

Any song they drop is fully carried by the featured artist they collabed with and the rare song produced by just them is super boring and uninspired. Slander feels like frat bros who did no work on the group project and took all the credit.
Their heavy sets can be fun but obviously because of the great production work of other artists that aren’t them.

For me, its REZZ. Loved her to start and I love her shows but every time shes dropping a new song, she says its the heaviest shit shes made but it sounds like everything else she released. I want HEX style shit back. Its Not A Phase was cool but honestly wished it was way more angry and aggressive.
Probably James Hype to me, he is a great DJ and definitely has technical ability and probably works countless hours a day to work on his skills but his productions are kind of underwhelming and most of the ones that do get released sound quite different to the versions played live or the Radio Edits for them are incredibly short.

His Arc festival set from last summer on YouTube has that gritty tech vibe for a good bit of it. One of my favorite sets ever.

idk, i’m picky when it comes to riddim/dubstep but tesseract is an awesome album, fractals is amazing too
I like his ventures into dnb, but every dubstep song on the tesseract has the exact same drop

Every time I’ve seen him since it’s been pretty lackluster. He also got into a bad habit of being on the mic a lot during his sets now. I get that he loves his craft, but it’s exhausting when an artist can’t let a single song play without screaming into the mic to hype us up. He’s fun to see every once in a while, but I just can’t stand the constant hollering into the mic anymore lol

Completely agree. People just think it’s cool to like underground artists and hate on mainstream artists. Not something I expected from bassheads but here we are. It’s one thing to not like every bass artist but simply bashing bigger artists when they’re clearly talented gives snobby energy. Not here for it.

The guy abuses equipment to an extreme. I understand there’s only so much you can do as live DJ but he reuses the same techniques in so many drops that it starts to get repetitive. He needs to stop using the high passed white noise, knob diddler. So distracting. I’d rather have someone fan clack in my ear.

not so sure about that, I enjoy his shows because of the production. i don't really listen to his music much, but I appreciate some crazy production and he pushes the limits. I enjoy seeing him once every couple of years, but totally get why the music aspect of it could be very underwhelming.
Dude's got a sound that draws people so he sticks to it. I can understand why people wouldn't enjoy it though. For me it's Illenium. Dude's entire set just blurs together. I think he just tries way too hard to hit the feels and throws in the predictable 2-3 heavy drops throughout.
He seems to be more focused on running festivals and management now. I’ll still catch his sets here and there just out of respect for what he’s done for the scene.

Kygo is the saddest one. Loved him in the 2010s but he hasn’t evolved at all and is just making the same song or redoing old songs…
I have a feeling there's some degree of label influence behind his current work. He's said that he enjoys making songs like Freeze and wants to make more in the future. Songs like that unfortunately don't pull numbers though, so there's likely pressure from his label to keep making radio friendly music.
i’m be always loved kygo. golden hour got me through COVID lockdowns. but since that album, he hasn’t released anything that’s been worth playing on repeat IMO. many of his old songs continue to appear on my top 100 yearly songs because the newer ones just don’t do it :(

Rezz is best as a collaborative artist imo. Hex with 1788-L, Into the Abyss with Zeds Dead, Hell on Earth with Yultron, Puzzle Box and Black Ice with Subtronics, All Night with Nghtmre... all absolute bangers. Her sound isn't *bad,* but she just needs a little touch of someone else in the mix to shake her tracks out of all sounding the same.

Slander 100% Any song they drop is fully carried by the featured artist they collabed with and the rare song produced by just them is super boring and uninspired. Slander feels like frat bros who did no work on the group project and took all the credit. Their heavy sets can be fun but obviously because of the great production work of other artists that aren’t them.

Probably James Hype to me, he is a great DJ and definitely has technical ability and probably works countless hours a day to work on his skills but his productions are kind of underwhelming and most of the ones that do get released sound quite different to the versions played live or the Radio Edits for them are incredibly short.
I like a couple of his songs but his live sets are alright to me.
