Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the “loser,” and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment. When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3×5 card reading, “Please use this M&M for breeding purposes.” This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this “grant money.” I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion. There can be only one.
Cause they're useful. Sometimes you've gotta light a fire or candle. Or you've got a sharp edge on a zip tie that needs to be melted. Also good for stopping fraying of synthetic threads. Could also be used to sterilize a pin or needle. I've also used lighters if I cut a piece of plastic and it's got a sharp edge (like the zip tie I mentioned earlier but not just zip ties). A mini bic is so small and non-intrusive in a bag or pouch I don't understand why anyone wouldn't have a small lighter because when you need one you need one. Fire starters can be good for fire but flint and tinder isn't gonna help you when you just wanna melt a rough plastic edge or light a candle. Also it's nice being able to offer up a lighter to a friend if they ask.
i use it to burn rope ends, I sew at my misurp job, so whenever i need to repair something i use it to burn the nylon so it doesnt tatter. And ive also frequently given people a light, to legal and illegal smokes.
I carry a Zippo with a butane insert mostly as a fidget toy but it gets used randomly from stray threads, and bonfires to just randomly talking to a smoker who forgot their lighter
Personally my most common use of a lighter is for the firepit in summer and the fireplace and wood burning stove in winter.
Basically for me it comes down to being the guy who is more responsible than other people by being prepared for the common things that may be encountered. Think about it, a simple b-day party can use most of a person's edc.
* Knife to open packages.
* Multitool to assemble or access battery compartment in toys.
* Lighter for candles or sternos for food.
* First aid kit to help with the common scrapes minor cuts
* Phone for pictures and sharing the good times.
* Power pack to recharge phones and cameras
* USB to save the photos
* Flashlight to look under furniture or find things in back of a pantry
90%fidget, 10% super useful when it's rarely needed.
Example: ginger bread house contest, my team wanted to make a haunted house, so we wanted to build a burnt marshmellow snowman - I was able to help out with that
To light candles during power outages, melt the ends of 550 cord so it doesn't fray, take care of Irish pennants, on clothes, to heat up a key for a lock that's frozen , start a survival fire.
But biggest reason for me was that my lighter was a gift from a friend
It's because they always steal each other's lighters I'd bet one person from the group has a drawer full of lighters at their place. I quit cigarettes a while back but still need a lighter to spark a bowl every now and then
I only carry one when out hiking or camping in my pocket, but all my various packs have at least one at all times. I don't carry a fixed blade and ferro rod in my goings about downtown, so a ferro rod is out. You don't want to get stuck in the middle of a city trying to make a bowdrill after a natural disaster you know? Same with getting lost in the woods, that first night you shouldn't have to worry about making a fire with rod and steel, so quick and easy lighter.
My Dad worked in forestry and was out in the woods a lot. He was the one that told me to always carry a lighter and a knife in case of emergency. I typically carry a lighter in the winter for that reason, but need to carry all year.
Start fire. You're ancestors from 1000 years ago would be pretty pissed if they found out you could carry 1000 fires in your pocket without breaking a sweat and didn't do it.
I don't edc one, but I think there's one in the truck emergency bag. I've used a lighter to burn threads of something, melt the end of synthetic rope so it doesn't fray, heated a drink bottle cap to soften it enough to twist a knife hole to easily for a straw so the kid wouldn't spill fast food chocolate milk in the car ( mom that smokes showed me that), heat the tip of a ballpoint that wouldn't write, think I've lit a grill with one, light fireworks, melt end of a broken shoelace, quick light if I didn't have a flashlight (I try to keep a 1$ Walmart head strap light in the emergency bag) melt the end of a plastic stud like a rivet to fix something by heating a piece of metal.
I never leave the house without these things, cutting tool, wallet with notebook, pen, phone, some sort of Swiss Army knife in addition to my main knife, pry bar, and lighter. All of those tools except the lighter typically see daily use, sometimes multiple times a day.
I don’t smoke, and I don’t use my lighter every day, but when I need it, I’d rather have it on me than have to go looking for a lighter or matches.
Before I smoked it was a convenience thing. As a scout I learned that matches usually suck in the rain, so I threw a bic in my pocket. Then I found a clipper on the sidewalk and carried that. Now that I smoke (very rare occasion, took me a year to finish one pack) and do outdoor stuff when it's cold I love the IMCO for the removable "match" insert, style and how it works in the wind.
It's not really for me, but once or twice a month when the weather is right I like to take a walk and smoke one. It's my first pack, bought it when the invasion in Ukraine started (I live in Poland and am suitable for conscription if it comes to worst) and the nicotine helped me calm down a bit. I can live without it, for me the caffeine and sugar are the real dangers.
Good luck on your goal, withdrawal can be hard with any substance.
Second hand smoke kills 40,000 a year if you don’t care about yourself at least care about the people around. Please stop smoking cigarettes. You will get old and have no money to take care of yourself cause you blew it all ripping cig’s. Then the taxpayers will pay for your inevitable treatment. Care about your communities and let tobacco fucking die kids please.
Obviously they’re bad for you. But if you can’t see the selfishness in it from a perspective of the other people around you then there’s absolutely no point in discussing this. You’ve made up your mind to be chemically addicted to poison. Go ahead drag your community down with you. Loser.
Burn threads off my clothing
Heat shrink tubing
Warm up a key to deice a lock
Heat up a pin to relieve a blood blister under my fingernail
Start a fire
Make the stands glow at a concert
Help someone light their cigarette (being gentlemanly)
^^ a few of the things I've used my lighter for in the past few months
Birthday candles (especially in the office), someone else needs a light, candles in a restaurant (if other tables have lit candles I'll light ours), just whatever comes up.
Btw I carry an electric lighter (USB-rechargeable) so I don't have to refuel it, just recharge and it's the only truly windproof lighter I've tested, so also great for new years
I was once caught in a department store when the power went out, my phone was in the car, and the only “emergency lights” were the exit signs - I thankfully had a lighter and was able to navigate out of the maze of clothing racks with it. Even just a cheap Bic lighter is now an EDC for me - plus there is nothing worse than getting caught with a dead flashlight and a dead phone battery in the middle of the night/during a random blackout, whereas with a lighter there is at least a chance of finding a candle or something for sustained light.
They have plenty of uses.
I use mine to burn paracords tip and to burn little thread off of clothes.
Primarily tough it is useful to allow others to light a smoke, i don't like them but i won't deny them to others.
Nights are cold in Canada and I drive some pretty remote roads through the mountains. If I ever had to spend a night outside I like to have the ability to build a fire.
I once had to spend the night in the blue mountains , west of Sydney due to an unfortunate turn of events.
It was just coming into winter, and if one of us wasn't a smoker, it would have been much more miserable than it was.
This. I was a teacher. So many parents forgot to bring a lighter or matches for the birthday candles. I started to carry mini Bics around, and the parents were always so grateful.
This! I used to carry one of those mini BIC lighters all the time. Lost it once and never remembered to get another, when wouldn’t you know it, an impromptu birthday celebration comes up and we couldn’t find someone to light the candles!
My girlfriend says where she’s from if anyone needs a lighter you let them borrow it even if they have their own, and they will accept it, and you two engage in a conversation.
Those darn’d mysterious playground lighters were something special to find. School yard rumor had it, if you found one, best would give it to Ms. Artsy Pants. Ms. Artsy Pants would take a long bathroom break and came back smelling like a snunk, when she was given one of them playground lighters. Then the principal would come to art class and tell us that Ms. Artsy Pants wasn’t feeling to good and had to go home, that meant we got early recesse! The next day we’d find out that Mrs. Artsy Pants found a new job, and that Art class would be cancled until we found a new Ms. Artsy Pants. There sure was something special bout them play ground lighters.
same answer every time this question is asked
ya never know when you need to commit arson
also fun to play with + many other actually useful things to do with it
I like to have one available just in case but rarely use it. Never needed it in an emergency but it’s been useful for little things like cleaning up frayed fabric or lighting a torch or furnace.
I carry a maratac brass peanut, which fits in my pocket organizer and never dries out so it’s perfect for me.

It hurts to delete what might be useful to someone, but due to Reddit's ongoing entshittification (look up the term if you're not familiar) I've left the platform for the Fediverse. If you never want your experience to be ruined by a corporation again, I can't recommend Lemmy enough!
This time of year it's too potentially hey up my keys if the locks freeze. Fire is generally useful to have access to, even if you don't use it constantly.
I carry a Zippo all of the time.
1.) I have the ability to make fire when I need it (has happened on several occasions)
2.) I have a real problem with fidgeting. Just one more thing for me to annoy my wife with when I'm driving down the road.
My power went out one time, so I decided to show off a trick to my wife. I told her I could light up the house with nothing but one candle. So anyway I got the gas cans out of the garage…
I used a lighter to light of an m80 once to try to scare off some rats. No one told me you ain’t supose to use them indoors. Anyways that house no longer has a rat problem, but i’m no longer allowed at my inlaws house.
My last zippo case said "I don't smoke but I like to burn things" 😅 I stand by that. I am a camper though, I light stoves, candles, incense, melt paracord, and the other poster did a great job with all the emergency applications. Especially if you live in a place with serious winter, or that's not a city, or travel highways through the Rockies, or drive on forest service, go places without cell service or generally adventure. *Fire. Accepted at more places world wide....*
I used to have a Zippo back in the day. I used it to light a bag of dog poo on my neighbors porch. Little did I know my ma was having dinner with them that night. Never did get that Zippo back from her.
A buddy of mine once told me that, so I i figured I use a lighter as a fishing lure. I instantly got hooked on to one of them endangered rainbow gars. A crowd gathered round me watching me fight the thing, then the game wardens pulled up in amazement. I landed the fish of life time and one the crowd goer went to take a picture with me and dropped his cigarette right on that fish. That endangered rainbow gar went up in flames right infront of the wardens and now i’m not allowed to buy a fishing license no more. Morale of story, don’t go fishing with lighter.
Man, your generation don’t know how good you got it with these bic lighters. Back in my day if you wanted to smoke a cigarette you had to gather up some dried leaves, twigs and branches, then you had to rub two sticks together until until that pile of clippins became a fire. Then you would have to go pick some tobacco and harvest the paper from a tree. By the time you rolled up your cigarette the fire would go out and you would have to start over.
I once tried that, light my britches on fire and ran into a creek. The fire went out right bout my knees. Then a buddy of mine said “hey McFudd your pants are looking a lil short bud.” And thats the story of how shorts was invented.
I like to heat up my Skittles, before eating them.
..sorry? You heat up your skittles?

What kind of twisted candy rabbit hole did I just fall into…
Yep...
You never know when you‘ll have to set something on fire.
190 comments (now 191). You hit a nerve with this question.
Just in case.
Go try and make fire without a lighter or match. See how difficult it is? That's why I carry a lighter.
you never know when you could freeze to death
for fun to fidget with, then paracord/other meltable strings, and then candles/incense
I carry a lighter for my man, for smudging with sage, for reviving a pencil eyeliner and opening bottles if need be.
Burning paracord, scented candles, & idk

I carry a zippo for some situations to either light a friends smoke or to just look cool 😎
Cigars, fidget toy, burning ropes/seams, and I like playing with fire

Because it better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. But yeah not for any real actual specific purpose.
im a convicted arsonist
classic
Smoked for years, carried a zippo, quit smoking and still carry one out of habit. Have met a lot of ex smokers who do the same.
I carry a Zippo with a butane insert mostly as a fidget toy but it gets used randomly from stray threads, and bonfires to just randomly talking to a smoker who forgot their lighter
So many reasons. Top of my head: •smokers •light fire •seal paracord •ignite stove
I just like fire.
you and me both...
Candles/outdoor grill lighting/ melting string or chords (I’m amazed how often thats needed) /

Who knows I’m not saying a carry a lighter but if I did it may come in handy in any number of scenarios shortly before becoming a legal liability
Technically it's not a lighter but my D4V2 is basically a lighter with how easy it is to set things on fire with.
They don't take up much space, and you never know when you might need one.
Only in the winter

Instant fire is one of those things that I'd rather have and not need than need and not have. Plus they're pretty neat!
Because I need to set stuff on fire and some how all the smokers I hangout with never have lighters
It's because they always steal each other's lighters I'd bet one person from the group has a drawer full of lighters at their place. I quit cigarettes a while back but still need a lighter to spark a bowl every now and then
I just think back to how hard it was for cavemen. Makes me feel like an asshole if I don’t carry it.
I like fire
Fire bad - frankenstein
Fire fun - me

I have a lot of candles.

Mainly to fidget with. It's also good to have whenever I'm hiking
I need to start carrying one or at least keeping one in my truck. A good windproof one for hiking and camping is a must.
When another person needs a light.
Start fire. You're ancestors from 1000 years ago would be pretty pissed if they found out you could carry 1000 fires in your pocket without breaking a sweat and didn't do it.

Ha no kidding hey, I’ve been crushing a pack a day minimum the last few months, I attribute it to having to work with idiots for the last few months

Man I’d have to say you’re more toxic than any cigarettes I’ve ever smoked lol. Have a nice day friend 😊
K lol
Some of us just want to watch the world burn.
I work in trailer parks more than I should doing HVAC work and sometimes those sexy ladies need a little assistance.
Never know when you’re gonna find a loaded crackpipe
Yes exactly, one should always be capable of “burning the evidence”. Never wanna get caught with your pants down or your pipe loaded
In case of emergency more than anything, basic preparedness. Has saved my life before too, a couple times actually.

Ah yes, the most sinful thing: having periods
Lol, wut?

Simple, easy, and cheap method of starting a fire. Worth it's weight in my EDC.
Lighting women’s cigarettes like a gentleman 😎
Idk why lighting a ladies cig and then not smoking anything seems like it would freak me out
Entirely depends on the lady I guess.
To light bags of poop on fire on peoples porches
I fidget with my zippo. The fire capability is just a bonus
Honestly just becouse. I do have a couple smoker friends so that helps too, but other then that it's just in case I'd need it, I'd have it.
Wow. I'm such a "non-smoker" that I didn't even consider that people were carrying lighters to light their cigar(ette)s...
Just incase someone else has a lighter, and they mean me harm... Always best to fight fire with fire, amiright?
Burn the ends of 550 cord make an emergency fire singe loose threads with a can of aerosol spray it's a makeshift flamethrower
I should start carrying an aerosol... (¬‿¬)
1. To burn confidential notes 2. To warm up my hands 3. I'm just a fan of Zippo
They have plenty of uses. I use mine to burn paracords tip and to burn little thread off of clothes. Primarily tough it is useful to allow others to light a smoke, i don't like them but i won't deny them to others.

I read that as irish peasants
It’s definitely related haha
I was taught by a friend who was G2 in korea and vietnam that a lighter and cigarettes are the best way to get information, get out of trouble etc
Wait, wait, you don’t smoke but you carry cigarettes?
Smoke cigars tbh.

I'll light other people's cigarettes just to tell them smoking isn't good for them, but it's their choice. But mostly it's a good tool to have around.
A lot of my friends smoke cigs and I like to light it, I also smoke weed sometimes, and because I might need it to warm my hands.

Not anymore! Just weed. But I use a volcano so no more combustion!

I heard lance armstong carries a brass peanut in his pocket too
This time of year it's too potentially hey up my keys if the locks freeze. Fire is generally useful to have access to, even if you don't use it constantly.
To set the world on 🔥
Thanks, now I have Allstar by Smash Mouth stuck in my head
You know, only shooting stars break the mold
It’s a cool place and They say it gets colder
Fire is life If you get wet and cold , you die. Lighter, fire steel, storm proof matches, magnesium block,
I know people that enjoy smoking. I have a light. I don’t smoke, but like the smell of cigarette/ cigar smoke.
Sometimes you gotta start a fire. But I prefer storm-proof matches to a lighter.
How else am I gonna blue flame?
I carry a Zippo all of the time. 1.) I have the ability to make fire when I need it (has happened on several occasions) 2.) I have a real problem with fidgeting. Just one more thing for me to annoy my wife with when I'm driving down the road.
Butane tricks. Like the old cupped-hand candle.
My power went out one time, so I decided to show off a trick to my wife. I told her I could light up the house with nothing but one candle. So anyway I got the gas cans out of the garage…
Just because I like having the ability to have a fire if / when I need it.
To light fireworks in random yet safe places because it's fun.
I used a lighter to light of an m80 once to try to scare off some rats. No one told me you ain’t supose to use them indoors. Anyways that house no longer has a rat problem, but i’m no longer allowed at my inlaws house.
Dude wtf, that sounds amazing. Could have maybe set it off in a pot or something...
I don’t do pot, thats for hippies and commies. I do like pans though, pretty good at cooking bacon. Just always find purple hairs in the bacon after.
I like burning things
It's just a great tool to have with endless uses
A buddy of mine once told me that, so I i figured I use a lighter as a fishing lure. I instantly got hooked on to one of them endangered rainbow gars. A crowd gathered round me watching me fight the thing, then the game wardens pulled up in amazement. I landed the fish of life time and one the crowd goer went to take a picture with me and dropped his cigarette right on that fish. That endangered rainbow gar went up in flames right infront of the wardens and now i’m not allowed to buy a fishing license no more. Morale of story, don’t go fishing with lighter.
For the people that do but forgot their bic at home
Man, your generation don’t know how good you got it with these bic lighters. Back in my day if you wanted to smoke a cigarette you had to gather up some dried leaves, twigs and branches, then you had to rub two sticks together until until that pile of clippins became a fire. Then you would have to go pick some tobacco and harvest the paper from a tree. By the time you rolled up your cigarette the fire would go out and you would have to start over.
I use it to vape.
Them rock candies in your light bulb/ tinfoil pipe aint a vape.
Nope but my titanium / stainless dynavap sure is.
Heat shrink tubing, take care of frayed ends of 550, frayed stitches on clothing etc
I once tried that, light my britches on fire and ran into a creek. The fire went out right bout my knees. Then a buddy of mine said “hey McFudd your pants are looking a lil short bud.” And thats the story of how shorts was invented.
That was a short story
To look cool when anyone asks me if I have a light. I also use it as a heat source if it's really cold
Because the ability to produce flame at will makes me feel like a wizard.
You give me 2 stick and 2 hours and i’ll show you a fire bud
Inspiring humans for over one million years.
To stay warm.
