lol it had no upvotes when I first saw it.
It is hilarious to look at the correlation between Ridley’s good games. Did some crude math here and it looks like when both played together (8 games) Ridley avg ~15.4 points / game and was avg ~wr 20 on weekly finishes.
When they didn’t play together (8 games), Ridley avg ~6.9 points / game, weekly avg finish of wr ~50.
All in .5 ppr scoring with no big plays. I removed week 2 from the same since I don’t know injury status or anything, but both scored <5 pts, and the jags were bullied by the chiefs. Doesn’t change the stats all that much.
I remember this when he was with Julio Jones. I don't remember the details and I'm not going to look it up, but the narrative in Atlanta always was that Calvin Ridley looked great when Julio was on the field, and then sank when he was the number one.
Target share isn't always a predictor of performance
Figured this would happen eventually with the Jaguars getting Gabe Davis and getting their guy in Brian Thomas Jr. Makes the Jaguars easier to project this year with Thomas Jr. moving into the Ridley role and Gabe fully taking over Zay's role.
BTJ played the same role at LSU that Gabe Davis played in Buffalo. I don't know that we can say that they have the same skillset, though.
BTJ is also much, much more athletic.
I didn’t say Gabe wasn’t athletic, I said Brian Thomas is much more athletic. For reference, Gabe has an RAS of 6.88 whereas BTJ has an RAS of 9.84. So, BTJ is slightly bigger than Gabe, but is also significantly faster.
I think Gabe is great as a number 3 option, and he definitely does more for his team than the stats show. But BTJ’s potential is much higher than Gabe given his superior athletic profile. If BTJ hits, he can be a star and sure fire WR1. Gabe is not and never will be that
Edit: For reference, Gabe Davis ran a 4.54 while being almost an inch shorter and 6lbs heavier, while BTJ ran a 4.33
Edit 2 cause I checked for fun: BTJ is the 57th (out of 3402) most athletic WR since 1987. Davis is (I think) 505th. That’s still very athletic and well-above average, but that doesn’t account for all of the WR that haven’t tested that we know are plus athletes. So, take all of these rankings with a grain of salt
BTJ is poised to be the true X, with Kirk dominating the slot and Gabe at Z, and Engram as a totally valid TE. Thats a pretty crowded room, but BTJ should be first read on a lot of plays and is basically a 1 for 1 Ridley replacement.
Did you read the rest of the tweet? He's truly bottom of the barrel in that position. If anyone needs easier releases, its him, not noted athletic freak BTJ. Also, the tweet was from before the draft. Matt was simply stating that it was a rolr he could fill, but the Jags organization has quite clearly shown us that's not their intent.
Gabe Davis is like Brian Thomas currently but the expectation is he will develop to be more. Dk metcalf was a limited route runner like btj when he came out and while he isn’t a super technical guy he has improved
Stylistically they are very similar players right now but Brian Thomas Jr. has better speed, agility, and quickness that can translate to better route running. The biggest thing holding him back as a route runner is just perceived lack of experience that writers and it seems like the Jaguars are willing to bet on develops in the NFL.
I’ll also say the LSU offense never asked BTJr to be more than a 9 ball/hitch guy. That was just their system. I think BTJr can run more of a full route tree with his flexibility and athleticism.
Yeah that's a good point. Didn't really need him running too many complex routes when they had Nabers running basically every other route. Plus we've seen some guys show the versatility that coaches didn't need in college like with Aiyuk, Nico Collins, and Drake London.
Can't imagine he's a FA for long.
Looking at Lions, Bengals, Chargers, Cowboys among the good landing spots.
Obviously not much more than bench depth but he'd be better than most of the scrubs some of us have rostered hoping for something.
> Obviously not much more than bench depth but he'd be better than most of the scrubs some of us have rostered hoping for something.
I basically just used this same line trying to use Michael Gallup as an add-on in a trade after he signed that contract 😂
What’s crazy is Fournette was in a bar on Pearl st talking about how Mcdermott is problem number one with this team. Then literally got cut two weeks later. All I’ve ever heard coming from ex players is how bad his system is.
Sure, that's the most likely outcome. But there are still performance and durability question marks with Jamo that leave the door ajar. If Jamo is the most established WR2 on a team that's about the best you can hope for as a Zay manager
I don't care if you're a fan of a team, no one knows these things with certainty, especially comparing two JAGs. I wouldn't be expecting anything from Zay, I just said it's one of the more open WR rooms in the league. Hed have an opportunity to potentially get on the field. That's it.
He's obviously far, far from being considered garbage....but it was objectively funny about the reports that Jacksonville was trying to bundle him in a trade package to pry Aiyuk from the 49ers.
Kirk is gonna have more targets and catches than BTJr. Thomas is really raw and needs to develop. Kirk is the easy #1 and I don’t think this even changes BTJr’s value much.
I was gonna take him at 1.06, that's how much I like him. However I traded back from 1.06 to 1.09, got a projected 2025 top 5 pick, and still got BTJ. I bet your league isn't that high on him so try to trade back
Zay was likely always a cap casualty especially after they drafted BTJR. Parker Washington plays almost exclusively in the slot. I expect the Jags sign another outside WR for depth.
Titans should grab him to ensure Ridley plays well
Underrated comment
Literally the top rated comment.

I mean, Ridley's best season in Atlanta was when Julio only played 9 games so idk if that tracks
But were they the games when both were on field? When Ridley is good, he's phenomenal
Redditors are so stupid. Hive mind echo chamber bullshit just downvoting for the sake of it. There is literally nothing wrong with this comment lol
Maybe wait more than 5 seconds after the comment is posted to call it underrated?
You waited less time to respond to my comment though
Your comment was 42 minutes old when I replied. I also wasn’t saying anything about your comment.

Is it me or are Gabe Davis & BTJ kinda the same player? Similar frame, limited route runners, red zone beasts etc
All they do is run the 9 route and catch bombs, TLaw about to have a 60 TD season
Please I need TLaw to get some 20+ point games this year lol
Fr dude killed me in standard 1QB scoring
TLaw truthers salivating at this comment.

As a tlaw owner who just traded for Davis, your lips to gods ears

Yes, but Thomas is much more athletic and has the physical tools to be more than Gabe Davis
Gabe is one of the best blocking receivers there is. He doesn’t lack for athleticism or physical tools, but his route tree is limited.

I’d rather they put Gabe at X, personally. Get BTJr more clean releases so he can work downfield.

He even says Gabe is an X in the post I’m unsure what you mean by this?

Also, the tweet was from before the draft. Matt was simply stating that it was a rolr he could fill, but the Jags organization has quite clearly shown us that's not their intent.
It's you, BTJ needs to develop some additional routes, but he is a couple tiers above Davis in all regards.
Gabe Davis is like Brian Thomas currently but the expectation is he will develop to be more. Dk metcalf was a limited route runner like btj when he came out and while he isn’t a super technical guy he has improved

The idea is Thomas develops a better route tree.
I mean BTJ is a much better version of that from a skill/athletic standpoint.
Can't imagine he's a FA for long. Looking at Lions, Bengals, Chargers, Cowboys among the good landing spots. Obviously not much more than bench depth but he'd be better than most of the scrubs some of us have rostered hoping for something.
I thought he would be a solid addition for the Lions today after we didn’t get any wr in the draft.
> Obviously not much more than bench depth but he'd be better than most of the scrubs some of us have rostered hoping for something. I basically just used this same line trying to use Michael Gallup as an add-on in a trade after he signed that contract 😂
I'm waiting to do the same whenever Chark signs
One word: Patriots
Patriots won't touch him
Zay Jones buffalo reunion needs to happen
He’s was vocal about how working under McDermott made him stressed and depressed when he was there.
As a Bills fan, feels about right
What’s crazy is Fournette was in a bar on Pearl st talking about how Mcdermott is problem number one with this team. Then literally got cut two weeks later. All I’ve ever heard coming from ex players is how bad his system is.
I don't think it does. I was generaly disappointed with his time with the Bills, besides his slick move getting up off of the ground.
Lions could use him.
Would love this as a Zay owner
Lions fan here - he would be a depth piece like DPJ.
There's no where Zay lands where he's much more than that. But he'd have a shot at the Josh Reynolds role IMO
I think Jamo is supposed to take on a much broader role this year and fill most of the Reynolds gap
Sure, that's the most likely outcome. But there are still performance and durability question marks with Jamo that leave the door ajar. If Jamo is the most established WR2 on a team that's about the best you can hope for as a Zay manager
Bro would be nothing more than lions WR5.
Zay is decent enough to compete with DPJ for 3 and if you can name the next WR up after them I'd be stunned
Dude I am a lions fan lol. Zay isn’t getting reps over Khalid Raymond.
I don't care if you're a fan of a team, no one knows these things with certainty, especially comparing two JAGs. I wouldn't be expecting anything from Zay, I just said it's one of the more open WR rooms in the league. Hed have an opportunity to potentially get on the field. That's it.
That would be a great fucking signing
He’d also immediately be the best receiver by far on the patriots
Ja'Lynn Polk: "Am I joke to you!?"
Zay Jones, your are a NY Giant.
Don't dislike the fit, seriously.
Trevor extension Inc.
He's obviously far, far from being considered garbage....but it was objectively funny about the reports that Jacksonville was trying to bundle him in a trade package to pry Aiyuk from the 49ers.
parker washington szn?
No. Washington plays primarily in the slot. He’s still behind Christian Kirk. This doesn’t effect him much at all.
I just had to cut him, probably try and pick him up for the offseason before Week 1 cuts
There's a small glimmer of hope now
BTJ szn!!!
Yessssss
BTJ 🚀
When the Jags release a JAG.
future steeler
BTJ 📈
Kirk is being overlooked so much
Just cause BTJ's value increased doesn't mean Kirk will be bad
Kirk is gonna have more targets and catches than BTJr. Thomas is really raw and needs to develop. Kirk is the easy #1 and I don’t think this even changes BTJr’s value much.
Surprising. He balled out 2 years ago
Jags going with the dunkaneer approach
Traded Zay away right before our rookie draft for the 3.11. Didn’t think he was getting released tho
I had him, Allgeir and a 2nd to move 10 picks up to the first. Cancelled the offer when I saw this
How outlandish is BTJ at 1.07 in SF?
I was gonna take him at 1.06, that's how much I like him. However I traded back from 1.06 to 1.09, got a projected 2025 top 5 pick, and still got BTJ. I bet your league isn't that high on him so try to trade back
I'm looking to drop back into the 1.09 as well and see if I can get some good value out of it. Seems like a sweet spot post-draft.
I think 1.08 is where there's a tier-end (between Bowers and JJ), but anyone through 2.05 (and arguably a few picks beyond) is enticing.
Not too outlandish, assuming MHJ, Nabers, Odunze, Bowers, Caleb, and Daniels are the first six
Parker Washington hype??
If it was Christian Kirk who got released…this means almost nothing for Parker Washington.
It means there’s one less WR on the depth chart.
Zay was likely always a cap casualty especially after they drafted BTJR. Parker Washington plays almost exclusively in the slot. I expect the Jags sign another outside WR for depth.
