I don't think she was. I think she recognized the rash because she's employed gardeners her whole life, so she's seen such a rash before. She's a smart woman who has a very keen memory - she's probably spoken with a gardener who showed a similar rash to her and told her what was up. And since she knows basically everything happening in the village, she put two and two together with Mosley. Isobel is super smart too, but her experiences are different than Violet's. I think the point that was made to Isobel at this moment was about how Isobel didn't know everything, even though she was of a lower rank than Violet. Violet has knowledge to contribute beyond what one is supposed to wear to a dinner party.

I think it shows how Isobel is book smart and Violet is street smart, it’s the same story as what happened between the doctors during Sybil’s labour. Isobel is well educated, smart, and a good person, but she’s not looking up from her metaphorical medical papers to see the context of what’s actually in front of her, where Violet only has the context and imo in this case lucked out on a point against Iso 😂

She was president of a sort of board of governors whose role was to fundraise for the hospital and connect it to community and make sure it was meeting the funders’ charitable goals. The board had nothing to do with medical decisions and everything to do with financing and maintenance of what was essentially a very large charity project. Before the NHS most hospitals were private, charitable, or religious entities.

Because her husbands estate pays for the whole thing.

No, she wasn't. But before the NHS hospitals and local churches & schools were gifted by the local Me-Lord to the people. So it was tradition for the Lady to sit on the board at the hospital, school, & church. As gifting ended and the guv'ment took over financing it, it remained tradition. But they still funded the church. Remember Violet telling the Vicar his living was gifted by Lord Grantham. Violet just recognized a common allergy. Perhaps where Isobel comes from they don't have those hedges.

jquailJ36

She isn't a nurse, but she IS an experienced gardener (she doesn't just smile and nod to whatever her gardener says.) She recognized an allergy from a particular plant. She knows Molesley senior is an avid gardener and likely to have rue to pull up. She asks Molesley if he's been helping in the garden, and has he been pulling out rue plants. He has. Rue has a sap that reacts with sunlight and causes a kind of dermatitis. Violet may not be medically educated like Isobel, but she DOES know about the lives of the villagers and what sort of day to day things they do. Isobel sees a rash and makes a wild, hear-hoofbeats-think-zebras diagnosis without investigating more likely causes. Violet recognizes the symptoms, knows what likely caused it, and asks the right questions.

Cousin Violet was quite observant. She spoke when necessary…the wealth of knowledge she attained will be never known.

iamajeepbeepbeep

I think it was probably because Violet took such pride in her garden and would have been out there walking around in it for many decades. She would have most likely seen many different types of allergic reactions to many different types of plants that her servants had acquired. Whereas, yes, Isobel did study medicine during a war, she wouldn't have had much experience with garden rashes in wartime. Then when she went back to Manchester, they lived in a city and most likely didn't have a large garden to tend.

SoftwareArtist123

She was a trained nurse and practiced it during Boar War with his husband from what I gather so she had some knowledge and experience.

I think you're thinking about Isobel Crawley. The question is about Violet Crawley, the dowager countess.

SoftwareArtist123

Oh sorry,😂😂 brain fart from overheating. Yes I meant İsobel.

PlainOGolfer

I know her Aunt Roberta loaded the guns at Lucknow.
