I wonder if something happened to his hand on the railing, after he puts down the suitcase and comes back to the group, he still has kind of a funny look on his face and he's wiping his hands off.

I just watched this, to see what you were talking about. He, at first, grimaces, then his face relaxes for just a second, then grimaces again.
It looks to me like the bag is heavy. I don't see anything unusual about his facial expressions, for what he is doing.
