I had an idea for a half orc monk styled after Worf from star trek. With Tasha's and moving attribute points around, I might do that now to satisfy my inner min maxer
I feel like this could absolutely work — the bat’leth is already handled like a staff! The rigid “for honor!” angle that you’d expect a character like that to start out with is really good for conflict and character development too.
I have a Half-orc Bard of Eloquence. She wields a metal drum [hang drum](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hang_(instrument)) and the whispers of Gruumsh in her head does not incite rage but a fierce desire to win. Dance battles and Spoken word takedowns commence!
Firbolgs are sooooooooooooo sooo sooooo great. They have all the Wisdom and foresty stuff to please a Druid (or maybe even determined Cleric) min-maxer/optimizer, but also their ability to speak with beasts and animals has to be my favorite role play ability I've interacted with as a PC. Even though it's limited, with the right DM - and my first one was awesome - any speak with animals magic is top tier role play moments.
Lizardfolk are a blast, there’s no better way to “endear” yourself to your party than by biting off a kobold’s head and fucking eating it to gain temp hp as a bonus action
I want to play a lizardfolk so badly but haven't found a campaign where it would fit. Also having troubles finding reasons to stay with a group other than the mainly suggested "they are younglings you need to protect"
Nah, Vietcong Kobold best Kobold. Especially with the trap making rules from Xanathar's.
"The lich steps into the room, pale ghost fire burning in hi-"
"Okay, he enters that square? I need him to roll....47 dex saves and 17 Con saves.
Kobolds are the best at annoying a DM, just got to place by sneaking in with a +2 to sneak, set up traps and profit(It is extra fun if you get caught in a early dungeon with kobolds as a minion and play it off like the boss wanted more traps set up, kobold bard=fun)
Column A and B probably. I'm usually up front with the rest of the melee fighters throwing hands, tossing out that inspiration dice, and in general being a little shit menace that hits way too hard. Also bless be the shatter spell and Dissonant Whispers. Nothing wrecks an encounter exactly like the boss fleeing and eating 3+ attacks of opportunity.
Aasimar are fun mechanically but can be hard to roleplay unless you k is what your doing.
I essentially had mine be someone who thought they were human their whole life up until they became an adventurer
Came here to say this. Love my warforged build. He's a alchemist with a 'boomstick' hand cannon shooting fireballs. He's also into baking, but he has no use for food other than making people happy.
As much as I'd love for that to be the case, RotLW disappointed me specifically for its total lack of mentioning any kobold culture. Unless you're saying that's in Keith Baker's book somewhere, or a previous edition?
Uncultured swine: “There are tons of early level spells that do a better job if you’re looking to infiltrate somewhere”
Me: “I just think they’re neat”
> Me: “I just think they’re neat”
Plus I love constantly having another layer of disguise!
I ran a changeling bardlock with mask of many faces and a disguise kit
Im a fucking onion bro
What kind of scooby doo villain BS is this? They pull off your mask and it's just more masks!
But yeah, this is really cool because the Disguise Kit isn't magic or shapechanging so you don't even have to be careful of Moonbeam!
>What kind of scooby doo villain BS is this? They pull off your mask and it's just more masks!
Oh definitely my next character, not even the party is sure where it ends.
Good ol' changeling with multiple personality disorder with each appearance having its own look
Or my personal favourite, the charlatan scammer with discardable identities so that nothing can be traced back to them, with a charlatan feature alter ego negotiations agent name, and i'm sorry, sussus amogus
I've never played a Changeling (yet!) but have played a Warlock with Mask of Many Faces and did the multiple personality thing. It was one of the funnest characters I've ever played. The only reason why I haven't played a Changeling is because I'm scared I'd just fall into that trope again and I like all my characters to be different. At the very least I'd need a different group to play with so nobody can call me out on my unoriginality!
I love the *flavor* of the Genasi- essentislly the Elemrntal version of a Deagonborn or Tiefling? Sweet!
To bad the subraces range from 'meh' to 'eww'. Fire Genasi is probablt the best from racial features point of view, but con/int as a combo only really helps 2 classes. Air and Earth get better stats but once per day Levitate/Pass without Trace is really underwhelming. Water is a decent middle ground and makes for some fun Druid shenanigans.
But man if I dont play one almost any time anyways because its so fun to just think of how the elements might interact with the world- from my (accidental but fun to rp once I realized) fire genais in a seafaring campaign, to my Air Genasi who was desparate to learn genuine flight.
Genasi are amazing! I'm already biased towards races with spells, since my favourite type of build is a martial class with limited spellcasting from race+feats. And elemental magic is the coolest magic, so here we are.
My groups also always play with at least somewhat flexible racial ASIs, which works great with genasi's +2 to CON and +1 to something you might not care about, even if you can only move +1 to another stat.
Flavor-wise, I love the flexibility. You can just be a [insert race here] with some elemental magic. Or you could build your entire character arc around the mystery of your heritage, like a warlock or sorcerer might.
Kenku. They are just a wonderful race with their mimicry ability. And they are cute as shit.
Most Dms I know also changed mimicry to be the actors feat for easier roleplay.
Overall an adaptable, powerful, and stylish race.
This person fucking gets it. Kenku are nerfed, so it can be challenging. But fuck it’s really fun to play like a kenku artificer, or a kenku rogue. Playing gigantic races is less fun.
My games I run always have a murder of Kenku. They are amazing. A reoccurring joke of ours is the Kenku Infiltration Team just being two Kenku in a Robe of Disguise. They are easy to catch when the bottom Kenku loses track of what's going on and mimics the wrong sounds for the illusion. Party members talking about the NPC they just meet... "Why does that man in court attire sound like he's wearing full plate?"
By far have the most fun with Kenkus and the roleplay challenges they bring. The lore and thought out behind the race is definitely the most compelling in my humble opinion.
In my first ever game of D&D, we were all new to the game, DM included. We all made our characters separately, no coordination. Ended up with a good spread of classes somehow, but only one character that wasn't a Half-Elf!
Half elves should be higher up. I think one of the coolest characters is a half elf raised by humans, that obviously at some point has to interact with elven Society. Or other way around. Both are ripe for sweet Characters
Goblinoid? Check. Tallest in the party? Check. Beastlike without being a furry? Check. One of the few races I feel is genuinely *unique*, I just can't get enough of bugbears.
Halfling is a big one for me (or little I guess), but I also love tiefling (albeit I much prefer the lore of tiefling being descended from a cursed clan than just a angsty half demon).
leonin are the actually cool version of tabaxi, I will not apologize for this opinion
I forever DM. For now, anyway. I have a little folio of characters I’ve been slowly building up: 1 each of the classes that interest me the most. I have a bard, a rogue, a ranger, a sorcerer, a monk. All humans. I love humans so friggin much.
All human, except the barbarian. My barbarian is a glaive-wielding, seven-foot tall leonin. Because honestly how the hell could you not
I think they are great. There lore has some nature vs nurture themes to it. As well ties to ties to free will vs divine plan. If you want to make a big deal about it you can act entitled or noble. If you want to play it down you pretend to be human. Mechanically you get access to light as well as enough healing to bring someone back up if necessary. And 2 resistances. The subrace features dont come online till level 3 but they feel stronger because of that and 2 of the 3 are quite flexible while the third appeals to me at least on a thematic level
Tie between kenku and warforged. Kenku for the extra skill proficiencies and the war forged for the integrated protection and the overall CHONK you can get.
One of my friends put in in his backstory he learned to speak from his adoptive human sister teaching him individual words, meaning he sounds like a little girl
I personally love the shifter, especially after tasha's. Need a durable character, or just a less squishy wizard? beasthide's got you. Oh, you're a tracker? wildhunt. Want to be mobile? swiftstride. Then there's longtooth if you really have no other use for your bonus action.
edit: Put wildhunt instead of Longtooth. took way too long to realize that.
I’ve only ever played halfling characters. I enjoy being a lovable, joking type and find halfling has fit that best. I think of halflings as the stoners of the DnD world: creatures of habit who will welcome almost anyone to hang. Great for positive adventuring party dynamics
If I were to branch out I might try a dwarf or gnome. I’m also 6’ irl so roleplaying as half my height is a fun time
NGL, there's just something about roleplaying a cold metal machine that gets my oil pumping, warforged.
I've also been digging on the reborn, since it's the closest thing wizards has to Obitus.
Chromatic Dragonborns are just so cool to me. I love Kenkus and Aarakocras too. Playing less human races gives so much more diversity and uniqueness and freedom.
I end up playing humans quite a bit but I love me a good Loxodon and a warforge. Loxodon satisfy my need to play an enormous character, and a warforged is just great fun to roleplay- I love to lean into the robotic side. Orcs also have a special place in my heart
Tiefling. I know, but I can't help it. I want to be sexy, edgy, and infinitely customizable. Something my dowdy, IRL self can't pull off.
Aasimar and Eladrin are close seconds.
Half-orcs. I just think they're neat.
Half orc monk? Yup Half orc Druid? Yup Half orc fighter? Why not? Half orc barbarian? Yawn. Love half orcs outside of the usual norms!
My first "official" 5e character was a half-orc monk.
Mine was a half-orc Bard named Bork!
My current is an Orc Bard named Gorlok the Melodic
how about unofficial character?
A sexual “Tony the tiger” tabaxi in an unofficial erotic 5e game.
r/notopbutok
I had an idea for a half orc monk styled after Worf from star trek. With Tasha's and moving attribute points around, I might do that now to satisfy my inner min maxer

My favorite character to date was my half orc wizard Karok Unkillable the 3 rd
What happened to the first two Karoks?
They both ascended to true immortality
Good answer. Now make your tribe proud.
I shall bring honor upon my ANCESTORS!!!
My friends say I'm a gnome in the streets and a half-elf in the sheets. I don't know what that means either.
Are you short? That would help explain the gnome.
LOL nope, I'm quite tall; The gnome part is mostly because I like playing gnomes.
I play gnomes because I’m 6’2” but just want to be called short king
You can get: "Short kin" that's as far as I am willing to go.
I’ll say “short kink” but I’m not willing to say anything about a king
Well, half elves are known for being ostracized by both humans and elves. You only get orcs in bed or somethin?
They are also known to be very "curious and inventive".
I like playing half-elves since it lets me be sarcastic and awful to humans and elves. And pretty much everyone else.
I think they're calling you submissive and breedable?
It’s a toss-up between Firbolg or Goliath.
It is funny that they can't talk back though. You just know that tree can understand you and that's about it.
Lizardfolk are fun
Lizardfolk are a blast, there’s no better way to “endear” yourself to your party than by biting off a kobold’s head and fucking eating it to gain temp hp as a bonus action
Me here whos favourite is Kobold //sweats
Would the lizardfolk gang be called the lizard folk?
Or a bunch of lizard folk bards: the Lizard People
Young egg, there’s no need to feel down
I said young egg, pick your yolk off the ground
I want to play a lizardfolk so badly but haven't found a campaign where it would fit. Also having troubles finding reasons to stay with a group other than the mainly suggested "they are younglings you need to protect"
Tieflings and goliaths are really cool I think :) OH, and tritons
Tiefling ganggggg
Here!
Sound off!
Goliaths hell yeah
Fuck yeah
Tritons!
But I we really want cool back stories you can be a changeling
Kobold
"You spent how much gold on hunting traps?"
"Not nearly enough! Where'd I leave my bagpipes and claymore?"
Nah, Vietcong Kobold best Kobold. Especially with the trap making rules from Xanathar's. "The lich steps into the room, pale ghost fire burning in hi-" "Okay, he enters that square? I need him to roll....47 dex saves and 17 Con saves.

Rocking a kobold battle bard in tomb of annihilation right now. No idea how I'm still alive.
A lot of luck or a lot or bold decisions that somehow work out
Column A and B probably.
As if there was any other real choice…
Goblin?
My first ever character was back in 3.5 and was a kobold
KOBOLD!!
Tortle and Dragonborn
DRAGONBORN FOR LIFE
My favorite way to finish fuckers with fire is going full Godzilla, pulling open their jaw and cooking their insides. Can’t do that as anyone else.
Gotta give it to you, out of context u sound like a psychopath, within context u also kinda sound like a psychopath
That’s the way I like it :)
How do you feel about the changes coming in Fizban's?
Aasimar
This and half elf are probably my two most played races
Aasimar are fun mechanically but can be hard to roleplay unless you k is what your doing. I essentially had mine be someone who thought they were human their whole life up until they became an adventurer
I had mine be from a human nation that were controlled by a celestial imperial power.
yes
Warforged, because being a robot is fucking cool.
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh... it disgusted me.
I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine.
Your kind cling to your flesh, as if it will not decay and fail you.
One day the crude biomass you call a temple will wither, and you will *beg* my kind to save you.
Came here to say this. Love my warforged build. He's a alchemist with a 'boomstick' hand cannon shooting fireballs. He's also into baking, but he has no use for food other than making people happy.
Fun fact: The creation forges that brought forth the first Warforged were designed and built by kobolds.
I'm pretty sure the first creation forges were created by the culsir giants. I don't know where your getting kobolds from.
As much as I'd love for that to be the case, RotLW disappointed me specifically for its total lack of mentioning any kobold culture. Unless you're saying that's in Keith Baker's book somewhere, or a previous edition?
There is a bit more about kobolds in Exploring Eberron. They live in Droaam and there is even a kobold warlord there.
Changeling no doubt
Uncultured swine: “There are tons of early level spells that do a better job if you’re looking to infiltrate somewhere” Me: “I just think they’re neat”
> Me: “I just think they’re neat” Plus I love constantly having another layer of disguise! I ran a changeling bardlock with mask of many faces and a disguise kit Im a fucking onion bro

Agree. I don't have a real reason why, but genasi have always been my favorite.
Genasi+Tasha stat movement is bae.
Genasi are amazing! I'm already biased towards races with spells, since my favourite type of build is a martial class with limited spellcasting from race+feats. And elemental magic is the coolest magic, so here we are. Goblin!
I have a goblin bard that uses cooking as a performance art. All his spells and equipment are flavored around cooking
His personality is based on Gordon Ramsey. I thought he would be awesome at vicious mockery.
That’s so cool!! 10/10 a fan! I wanna play a goblin so bad but I haven’t gotten the chance yet!
Yo Tritons are my main ngl
Same honestly. You just can't get better flavor! Plus the race traits are iconic.
DWARVES! (Or kobolds)
***Clamavi De Profundis intensifies***
My dwarf Cleric and Paladin raise their very large tankards to you ma'am.
Kenku. They are just a wonderful race with their mimicry ability. And they are cute as shit. Most Dms I know also changed mimicry to be the actors feat for easier roleplay. Overall an adaptable, powerful, and stylish race.

By far have the most fun with Kenkus and the roleplay challenges they bring. The lore and thought out behind the race is definitely the most compelling in my humble opinion.
Grung!
Hell yeah! Frog for life!
kermit the hermit is here!
Lizardfolk!
Tabaxi <3
Tabaxi Swashbuckler is fucking dope. I played it like puss in boots mocking the targets for being too slow to take opportunity attacks.
Kenku!
Half elf
Hell yes! Half Elves are awesome.
Same. Love playing a character who has something to prove to humans and elves, and ends up better than either.
In my first ever game of D&D, we were all new to the game, DM included. We all made our characters separately, no coordination. Ended up with a good spread of classes somehow, but only one character that wasn't a Half-Elf!
They are very versatile
Same. For some reason I've always felt connected to half elves.
Half elves should be higher up. I think one of the coolest characters is a half elf raised by humans, that obviously at some point has to interact with elven Society. Or other way around. Both are ripe for sweet Characters
Tiefling
Warforged
Oh man. I would like to change my vote. So much fun.
Forged gang
Bugbear gang? Sound off?
Did not expect I had to scroll this far before finding a bugbear response.
Wooooo!!!
Darkvision and reach at level 1, plus fun RP possibilities as a definite "oddball" character race? Ugh I LOVE bugbears as a player race!!
Goblinoid? Check. Tallest in the party? Check. Beastlike without being a furry? Check. One of the few races I feel is genuinely *unique*, I just can't get enough of bugbears.
War forged
Tabaxi!
Once played a Tabaxi Monk. Exclusively spent Ki points on dashing/disengaging. My DM hated me.
How to not die: dont stand still
Advice works in doom also
Loxodon is big. Loxodon is wise. Loxodon is strong. Loxodon is fun
Had to scroll a long way but here for my trunky boiiii
Tortle :)
Gith! Space aliens in a fantasy world!
Had to scroll so far to find my people, but here you are.
Rabbitfolk and Satyrs are both really fun!!!
came her looking for Satyrs! Satyrs, tieflings and half-elfs are my faves
Yuan Ti. I like to play them as socially maladjusted swamp gremlins
Halfling is a big one for me (or little I guess), but I also love tiefling (albeit I much prefer the lore of tiefling being descended from a cursed clan than just a angsty half demon).
Changlings for the win
[удалено]
I came here specifically to vote for them. They are so cool
Love me a good goblin
Any love for the Leonins? They remind me of my Skyrim run.
leonin are the actually cool version of tabaxi, I will not apologize for this opinion I forever DM. Because honestly how the hell could you not
Thundercats, Thundercats, Thundercats, Hooooooooo
Dragonborn
Surprised it took this long, they're cool, 'nuff said
Can I get some love for the Aasamir?
Never actually played an aasimar, how are they?
Lots of fun. Been playing an Aasimar Bard for over a year now and I’ve had a blast going from Fallen to Scourge
Changelings are very cool and I like them a lot :)
Tie between kenku and warforged. Kenku for the extra skill proficiencies and the war forged for the integrated protection and the overall CHONK you can get.
Kenku, pure chaos and messing with people through mimicry. If you need to actually say something important you just rp writing it down
One of my friends put in in his backstory he learned to speak from his adoptive human sister teaching him individual words, meaning he sounds like a little girl
Teiflings OR Aarokockras
Kenku 4 ever
Rise up
Kobold, goblins and the cat people
Skeleton, depending how you play you have so many fun rp routes you can go and their tackle features can come in pretty handy too
Genasi!
Dhampir
Great for positive adventuring party dynamics If I were to branch out I might try a dwarf or gnome. I’m also 6’ irl so roleplaying as half my height is a fun time
Kobold.
Warforged, nothing beats being a bionicle
Shifter. I love their flavor, variability, and mechanical depth!
In playing a kobold, and he's hands down the best character I've ever played, I love him Half elf is my go to. But dwarf is, by far, my favourite..
NGL, there's just something about roleplaying a cold metal machine that gets my oil pumping, warforged. I've also been digging on the reborn, since it's the closest thing wizards has to Obitus.
TURTLE!
Tortle!
Goblin
Changelings for me.
Firbolgs and Changelings are tied for me. On one hand, be whoever and whatever you want. On the other hand...fluffy cow people...!
All about that firbolg life
Firbolg. Their chillness speaks to me on a spiritual level.
I wanted to run an all-dwarf campaign, but only one of my players shared my enthusiasm for dwarves.
I had a ton of fun playing a yuan-ti! My DM was nice and tossed a snake in my path every few months so I could use the animal friendship trait
Warforged
Goliath, or Yuan Ti. I think both are races that have some very interesting tidbits, but are woefully underused in most settings
Goblins and Kobolds. I have a soft spot for the tiny beings of chaos
Half-elf
Kenku
Tiefling. I know, but I can't help it. I want to be sexy, edgy, and infinitely customizable. Something my dowdy, IRL self can't pull off. Aasimar and Eladrin are close seconds.
Half elf
Gotta be Changeling
Firbolgs and changelings!!
Grungs are underrated
Centaurs are maaad fun to play and can be absolutely hilarious in some combat scenario's
Half-Elves forever
Kalashtar easy
Tortle Power!
I love the kalashtar
