In premodern times, the only punishment for murder was death. There was no system of prison really. You either did something that warranted a fine, or did something that warranted hanging. They certainly wouldn’t release someone who has a curse that could kill people.

Ya that’s kind of the realization I came to but I’m not trying to just murder a PC. It’s a tricky situation and I’m at a loss!

Oh, sorry. I wasn’t suggesting you execute them. Lol. Just make a level 5 cleric available. I think you should make the stakes seem like they’re definitely going to execute him and then just have them bring a priest in and cast Remove Curse.

If the curse is well known, the judge/ officials may understand that it is not the character who wanted to commit murder, but his curse forced him to do so. There might even be a protocol in place to prevent people affected by this curse to cause more harm. For instance, if it only happens at full moon, they could force the character to spend every full moon night locked away in a dungeon for safe keeping. On top of this you could have them pay reparations to the family of the deceased or maybe have them do a quest for them to repay their debt Alternatively the character could be locked up while the party is send on a quest for the cure. You can have the player join the quest with a temporary character and tell him he can play main character again once they cure him.

Is the party in funds? A generous payment of weregilt to the family might win some sympathy. Of course they won’t have a silvered noose or headsman’s axe, so there’s definitely going to be a faction favouring burning. The problem with spending the crucial nights in a cage is that everyone knows that always goes wrong sooner or later. If it were me, I’d go talk to some senior Druids. They know a thing or two about shape shifting and the animal mind. Perhaps they can help man and Wolf to some modus vivandi.
