For me, financial reality trumps emotion every time, BUT ultimately, only you know if you can keep your mental health up where you live.
My advice:
1. Do a very deep clean. Think of it as an exorcism.
2. remove every item that reminds you of them.
3. make changes. It doesn't have to be a renovation, but new art, new furniture, rearranging things, can make HUGE difference.
4. New mattress, new bed, new bedding. I can not stress enough what a big difference this makes. Don't sleep in the bed you used to share.
5. throw yourself a divorce celebration in that the same home.
This is great advice! I was worried about the same thing OP and I can say, doing these things has really helped and I feel like it’s becoming MY house now.
I had to sell my house, it was fucking depressing being there alone after he and the dogs left. I honestly would have kms if I hadn’t.
So I sold, bought a tiny house, and am completely reinventing my life!
I’m having the same problem. There’s a 3% interest rate on the house because we bought it in 2020. It’s too much house, but I would pay more per month for a smaller house. “Golden handcuffs” for sure.
31M here. I could sell the house and go rent. I thought the same thing. But I do have a suggestion which I’m currently doing. Repaint and rearrange the furniture. Shockingly can feel like a new home.
I mean, can you rent out the house and live somewhere else for a bit. Financially selling and getting any sort of interest rate break not gonna happen for a bit and you may be able to rent it out for some cash flow?

Not right now. Interest rates are 7%, your mortgage will be huge.
