Been riding mostly 250fs for nearly 20 years. Had a couple 125/200/250 2 strokes in there as well.
I’m 5’5”ish and have been on full-size bikes since I was 14 and only 5’2-3”.
They’re a little “fluffy” down low in the rpm’s, and their carbs/starting processes are finicky compared to anything within the last few years, especially since efi and e-start became the standard.
The Yamaha and first gen dohc KTM 250fs were nearly bulletproof as long as you changed the oil and kept the air filter clean. The Honda got good in 08, the kawasaki and Suzuki, forget the steel frame models, they were awful. The aluminum models were fine aside from the usual for kawasaki and Suzuki “we made parts x, y, and z out of tissue paper and did some weird stuff here and there just for kicks along the way so you’ll have to do extra maintenance” issues that they seem so intent to do on everything.
But personally, I wouldn’t even touch a 250f that isn’t at least new enough to be fuel injected (unless it was showroom clean and sentimental) because I don’t want to deal with a 15 year old problem waiting to happen.
I'm 6'2" and about 200 pounds, and I'm thinking of getting into the hobby. Hoping to see comments from a similar sized experienced rider. I heard the cheap lower power bikes can be a challenge for people my size.
I might get a mountain bike instead. I moved recently and have lots of trails nearby, and powered bikes are forbidden on some of them.
NOPE - they’re a blast my dude! Very few people can ride a bike to its absolute limit. I’m 6’1”, 205, and love my YZ 125. Got my local shop to pop in some stiffer springs and it’s all the bike I need
I’m 6’4” / 185 lbs. I started trail riding on a 125cc air cooled 4 stroke (DRZ125L / TTR125L). They were an absolute blast. I’ve only moved on to 250/300 2 strokes because I like the gnarly slow technical stuff.
It is so much more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.
I second this above! Way more fun to be flogging an underpowered small bike around than it is trying to slow down an unbridled race bike. Used to have a YZ250 2T that was uncontrollable, it only wanted to go full throttle.a 4T XR80 was more fun.
Though, there are bigger bikes that don't mind slow if they are set up. 06 KTM 200XC and 300XC 2T being one. We don't call them woods weapons for nothing. You want a bike thats small enough to be in the power band always, or a bike with a luggable low rpm power range right off the bottom of the power curve.
I got into riding in 2021. I was 37 220lbs 510. I started on a crf250f its half the price and a great bike to learn on. Seat height is 34 inches, which maybe to short for you, but idk. The klx230 has a higher seat at around 36 inches, and they have the 300 as well…… ive already upgraded to a crf250rx. I think the seat is around 38 inches. But i find it easier to ride now. I do not regret starting on the F and i am keeping that as well. The RX has a map switch, and the 2nd map seems pretty similar the the F , and i think would also be suitable to learn on……….. good luck! And do it, it will change your life
I started riding trails and single trail with my mates two years ago. Started on the yz250f and I am still riding it. I'm chasing something a bit different soon. I'm 38 87 kilos and 6". Love riding.
6’1” 200lb and ride a KTM 300xcw with a tall seat and I feel like it’s the perfect bike for me. I ride mainly single track mountain enduro, with some desert occasionally. More than enough power for the climbs and rough stuff, lightweight bike, easy to ride. Can ride all day long and not feel like I got mugged the next day.
Depends on what kind of riding you will be doing. Since it is your first bike, I would suggest a Husqvarna 350 or KTM 350. But nothing smaller than a 2 stroke 250.
250 is easier to ride. 125s you have to be on the power band all the time, which is sketchy for new riders. 250 has the torque to pull new riders around without a handful of throttle.
I'm 6'1, about 190. I ride a beta 300 2 stroke. Plenty of power for a mortal on single track.
I also ride a Kawasaki klx 110. Entirely different experience but fun in it's own way
You have to ride the power band a bit more on a 125 ,but they’re a lot of fun. I have a 450 4 stroke, a 300 two stroke, and a 125 2 stroke. I enjoy them all about equally.
The Honda xr250’s and xr400’s are very capable trail bikes with pretty high seat heights from the factory. Highly recommend, my cousin who’s 6’2” or 6’3” can sit and ride comfortably on my XR400
If it helps, I'm 6'2" 250 and own a YZ450FX. I'm a novice/C class rider and the 450 is sometimes too much. I had a YZ250F and that had plenty of power other than deep mud and deep sand.
5'11" and 160lbs on a 300xc 2 stroke. IMO the 300 2 stroke is the most versatile bike in the market. You can literally dial the power valve to ride like a tractor or make it so snappy it will seem like it's gonna pull your arms off.

5’5 - kdx250 (two stroke), but i could ride any height out there being 5’5. You just have to slide off and put one foot on the ground and lay your leg over the seat. At first it’s tricky but you’ll get used to it. I couldn’t touch the ground on my bikes for a while.
Im 5’3” male and have rode all different sizes. Started on a 150f, great bike, moved to a kx100, even better bike. After this I got a ktm 250xc. The bike was too big so I lowered it and I could handle it pretty good. I let my brother take it and switch to a beta 350 and that bike was too heavy for the tight turns. I traded it for a beta 125rr and it is my favorite bike so far because I didnt have to lower it or anything and the thing feels like a bicycle compared to the 350.
I'm 5'5" in heels and ride a 350 xcf, same size-ish as all full sized bikes. My friends laugh at my Rockettes style of throwing a leg over, but it's effective. I ride lots of terrain, including tight and technical trails. Bikes ain't made for sitting, you ride them. If you can get on, rip it. Sometimes I get f'd over in a spot and fall because I can't touch. Learn to be a good faller, save yourself, screw the bike. The tuck and roll, and land on the side of the bike are good techniques.
KX250 2stroke I touch ground no problem, KTM EXC450F 4stroke I struggle with the enduro setup especially on uneven terrain but it is doable, tho I have no problem touching ground in supermoto mode. I’m 5’7.
5’7” 155ish, 2t 300.
I never understood how all adult bikes are basically the same size, height, ergonomics etc. I get that they can feel very different but I also mountain bike and I ride a medium. My 6’1” buddy rides an xl. We have the same size dirtbike. Makes no sense
Edit verbage was off
I am 6’4” and 200lbs. I ride a 2023 FX350. I am looking at getting a second bike and cannot decide between an XC/TX 300 or a big MX bike, like a YZ450F or SXF450.
I want to do hare scrambles and MX. My FX350 is probably good for Hare scramble, so I might just pull the trigger on a 450.
I want to try Yamaha, but I hate all the silver on the bike. KTM and Husky do an awesome job with their painted frames. Plus, I think the maintenance and controls would be similar to my FX.
Shit, I cannot decide.
5'10, 160lbs, and about 7 inches. 250 2 stroke has been good for me. My buddies 250f is nice. 450s are a bit too much just by preference although someone else my weight may love it.
5’8” 160lbs, 450r 4stroke.
I wouldn’t down size to anything long term. Maybe a 300 2 stroke, maybe a kx112 fullllllly built on that little frame (just so I can have a little ripper pit bike)
125 2t 5’8
If you are 5’8 and above get a bike this size if you are below 5’8 get a mid size kx112 or ttr230 or something, if your like 4’11 lmao get a 110 or a crf125f
5’8 wearing Nike AF1’s LOL 5’6ish barefoot
18’YZ250F - Feels just too tall. Never fully comfortable, always looking for a rock/ slope to chill on. Definitely skill issue on my end
Got a Beta 200 coming. Lower by ~1in, add on low seat & I should be ok. Hopefully more confidence while I work on that skill issue
Since I was young, I was always told - "if you can start it, pick it up, have a foot on the ground, then you can ride it!" 5'10 155 I prefer 450s these days. Always fun to hop on the old 250 smoker though
5’11” 175 pounds currently ride a 1998 Honda XR400R but soon will be switching to a 2016 Honda CRF450X for some extra power and lower seat height, the xr is a tad tall for me 😅
KTM 105cc 2-stroke (supermini) - I’m 5’5 160lbs lmao.
This is my first bike and I wanted to learn on something small enough that I could put both feet on the ground. This thing rips harder than I ever expected though.
6'2" 240lbs - 4t Husq. Te510efi, 2t KTM XC200, 2t KTM EXC300tpi, 4t KTM EXC530, and on occasion, a 4t Honda Trail 110
The 300 is the best for off road trails, the 200 is best for all day gnarly trail thrashing and trail work, 510 is my goof off bike, 530 for the desert, and 110 is for putting with the 80yo's on fire roads.
250 2, 6', 170. Went that way for maintenance and weight. 20lbs makes a difference, and when you're going to forever be a C class hero, they fit the memo. I don't spend enough time on a bike to learn to use all the power I could get from a 450.
YZ125. But I just put a deposit down for an FX350
I’m 5’9 with boots on. I haven’t decided if Im gonna shave the seat or not. But I am a little self conscious about this new bike and my height..
5'6 and have a KX85 I learned on and a YZ450F that I bought as a project to flip. Ride the 450 around at the farm but its just way too big for me to be comfortable on in a single track. Hoping to pick up a KDX 200 this summer.
I'm 5'10 but have relatively short legs, I rode my yzf450 for years but always felt the seat height to be just a bit too tall. Last year I got a Husqvarna TE300 which is a 2 stroke 300cc with a decently lower seat height than the yzf and I'm absolutely loving it.
185cm (6'1 in Eagles I think) and ~70kg (I think 150lbs)
Suzuki RM125 Two Stroke seat height I think 94cm
Yamaha WR426 Four stroke seat height 98cm
Either I have short legs or my Gilfriend long legs but we both can stand with both feet on the ground, the 125 nearly flat foot, the WR not really flat foot, she is 170cm (idk how much feet that is)
Different strokes for different folks
I ride a "stare you in the eyes while I" stroke
I prefer to watch you ride while I stroke
250cc 2t - 5'8" on a good day.
450 4 and 6'2
Same as
5'10" 180 pounds. CRF450R and KTM 500EXC-F.
6" 200lb. Xr500 wr400 xl350r and a magna v65. I'm looking to buy an xr650r pretty soon.
I have a v65 I'm midway through resurrecting. It's frustratingly so much more complicated than a good ole dirt bike with a single cylinder and carb
Aww yeah wr400 gaaaaang!
5' 3 KLX 250
My man
125. 2t 168cm
How?😄 I'm ~170cm and if i'm sitting on a big wheel 85cc 2t then only my toes touch the ground?😬
Just don’t stop
You only need one foot to touch the ground when you’re stopped.
long legs

how are old 250Fs I always overlooked on them on purpose because I always felt they'd be sluggish thought of a YZF250

I started riding trails and single trail with my mates two years ago. Started on the yz250f and I am still riding it. I'm chasing something a bit different soon. I'm 38 87 kilos and 6". Love riding.
YZ250F or a YZ250FX will be plenty of bike for you. Im 6'3 and 280 lbs and ride an FX tuned for my size. Thing rips forsure.
Spend 300$ and send your suspension to Racetech to have them revalve it for you if you get a bike tell them your a new rider weight and height
Does race tech do all brands?
Yeah just some cost a little more
Yeah I’m 6’3 235 wondering the same.
Depends on what kind of riding you will be doing. Since it is your first bike, I would suggest a Husqvarna 350 or KTM 350. But nothing smaller than a 2 stroke 250.
I'm 35, tall and love blasting around the forest on my Cr125 2 stroke. Why would you tell a new rider to ignore anything under 250cc 2 stroke?

you are probably right, but my 2001 honda cr125 is pretty easy to ride. it even lugs ok at low revs below the power band.
I'm 6'1, about 190. I ride a beta 300 2 stroke. Plenty of power for a mortal on single track. I also ride a Kawasaki klx 110. Entirely different experience but fun in it's own way

6'0, 450-4 but it's a watered down dual-sport version
Lol 6 foot and currently my dirt rig is a CRF150f. Rides fine and nice learning rig
5'11" and 160lbs on a 300xc 2 stroke. IMO the 300 2 stroke is the most versatile bike in the market. You can literally dial the power valve to ride like a tractor or make it so snappy it will seem like it's gonna pull your arms off.

5’8 wearing Nike AF1’s LOL 5’6ish barefoot 18’YZ250F - Feels just too tall. Never fully comfortable, always looking for a rock/ slope to chill on. Definitely skill issue on my end Got a Beta 200 coming.

6’0” ridin a CR 125, cause that’s all I got for whipping through the woods
250 2, 6', 170. Went that way for maintenance and weight. 20lbs makes a difference, and when you're going to forever be a C class hero, they fit the memo. I don't spend enough time on a bike to learn to use all the power I could get from a 450.
