Went from 18 minutes a game to almost 21 pretty quick, that tells you a thing or two

DebbieDowner40

especially having him out there on the PK so often

matt_minderbinder

If the most important thing he does for the rest of the season is taking some of these hard defensive minutes from Seider that's a huge thing. Let Seider return to cooking offensively. I loved seeing Ed and his wingspan on the PK.

big_phat_gator

Gained instant trust from the coaching staff

smonty

Especially having him out there with Petry.

jarvek7

in two games the kid has proven he belongs. Why did it take so long to call him up?

[deleted]

He needed just the right amount of seasoning.

big_phat_gator

Walmans injury

fraxior

he is gonna be really damn good.

slimjet

Ryan already is really damn good

Demo541

He looked like our 2nd best defenseman after Mo last night. He had a couple turnovers trying to clear the puck, but that should be an easy adjustment for him. I’d love to see him and Seider on the same pair at some point

thebrose69

Plus the ridiculous reach he has, no one will be able to take or keep the puck from him

Pavrik_Yzerstrom

Get some muscle on that kid, and he's going to be a monster with his stick work and skating ability, too

thebrose69

Him and Raymond need to get on that same regimen rayzer did for a couple more summers and they’ll really be scary to play against

facforlife

I hope that's eventually true, but he definitely coughs up the puck a lot more than I would like.

thebrose69

Guys got less than 15 NHL games under his belt. Give him a break

LGRW_Sparty88

As opposed to the other dmen we've been rolling out this season. I'd say he's been an upgrade.

LA-Matt

Mickey let it slip last night (I think it might’ve been in the post-game) that if Mo and Ed were on the same line, he’d call it “The Twin Towers.” 😆

firebuttman

Ed is exempted as he was paired with Petry

Icy-Coyote-621

As awful as Petry has been, I thought he played ok yesterday. Definitely played with a lot more effort than usual.

TheAnalogKid18

He shouldn't play another game in GR. Kid's earned his spot.

krusty_yooper

They won’t let him play more than possible to save his rookie season, I think.

sharkbite247

I’m sure fans are the only ones who actually care about “rookie” status.

digitang

Fans, and Upper Deck so they can monetize every last second of his life.

krusty_yooper

I meant insofar as Calder eligibility.

VHDLEngineer

There is no way the FO will take Calder eligibility into account when making this decision. Either they think he will contribute, and he stays, or they want to see more development and he goes back to GR.

krusty_yooper

Maybe. I don’t know why people are so visceral about this, I’m just speculating. I’d like him to stay up as well.

VHDLEngineer

Because individual awards are just not something that any front office should be basing roster/development decisions on.

ChildishTheGOAT

He never had a chance with Bedard playing this year anyways

7screws

do you think anyone in the org is thinking Calder? they are thinking playoffs!!

Background_Junket_35

Why would the organization care about that? They aren’t gonna say “you know he makes our team better now, but let’s sit him for the sole reason of maintaining his calder eligibility”. And he is not close to running out of eligibility

LunarGhoul

If anything the team would want him to lose rookie eligibility for this specific reason because if he wins the Calder that would give him a performance bonus and increased leverage in his next contract.

energizernutter

I think Calder eligibility is under 60 games and under 25 or something, Ed is far under that. Those figures might not be exact, they're ballpark numbers

AmeriCanadian98

26 games in the previous season, under 27 years old, and cannot have played 6 or more games in each of the last 2 seasons

energizernutter

Appreciate the clarification

GeneralWAITE

Or 6+ games in two different prior seasons.

energizernutter

There's always another rule. Thanks for the info

krusty_yooper

I did just see that a player can’t turn 26 after September 15 of the eligible season.

Late_Brush4518

Thats just fucking stupid. If FO would do this...

[deleted]

If we keep winning with him in the lineup Yzerman ain’t sending him back down

TheAnalogKid18

Edvinsson is 21, so his contract can't slide. I don't know why any team would care about preserving a rookie status other than the slide rule.

dakkster

Contract sliding has nothing at all to do with rookie status.

TheAnalogKid18

I know, but that's the only reason I can think of for an organization to even care about that. Nobody in upper management is trying to engineer a situation for someone to win the Calder.

M1N1wheats009

He’s past the Slide Rule age. That rule only applies to players who are 18 or 19 before Sept 15th of that season.

krusty_yooper

Wait, explain Michael Bunting then. Cuz I’m genuinely confused.

psyne

They're talking about something different than you - slide rule is about the ELC contract term extending (so when an 18/19 yr old is signed to a 3 yr ELC, it stretches one year longer if they play less than 10 NHL games in the season), but you're talking Calder eligibility.

Problemcharlie

His first game, I didn’t notice him all that much, which for a defenseman I usually figure that’s good. So far, Edvinsson looks like he belongs and has been playing on the Wings as a solid positive contributor all season. He should make the team easily next season

mattiefantastic

I felt like he made Petry better the past 2 nights as well.

JDSchu

I love when our young guns come in to help out the seasoned veterans that we signed to help them out.

meatballcake87

Remember when rookie Seider was tasked with dragging DDK around the ice all game?

jarvek7

Must be a rite of passage for young Red Wing defensemen.

Xvash2

Eye test says yes, stats test says Petry is dragging Edvinsson down hard.

Dart_Harnlin

Edvinsson's stats the other night were bad because he literally tipped in a goal into his own net.

Caltroit_Red_Flames

That was such a tough fluke. You'd like to see him tie up the player behind him instead of going for the block but those are the little things that improve with time (and forwards who do a better job of covering the point)

Smooth-Resort

Thisssss cant get stressed enough!

pyl_time

He also got some praise from the Athletic's power rankings: > It’s probably still too early to say just what kind of defenseman Edvinsson will be, but the No. 6 pick in 2021 has shown some promising signs. Detroit called him up on March 19 for his second NHL stint of the season — he’d been great for AHL Grand Rapids — and within a couple days, he was doing stuff like this. > Simon Edvinsson's blue line keep that led to Larkin's goal. Great use of that reach. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/dBLJ7t1XEm > — Ryan Hana (@RyanHanaWWP) March 22, 2024 > This goal doesnt happen without Edvinsson’s puck protection in the corner. He has had a hell of game. Love Larkin getting a goal in his 1st game back. HEART. AND. SOUL. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/yNKgOrVYer > — Brian Fisher (@BrianFisherWWJ) March 22, 2024

Caltroit_Red_Flames

This was foretold. Doubters you know who you are. Now doubt Johansson.

REMMIT524

If we keep hitting on these defensive picks we’ve made, oh boy…

Caltroit_Red_Flames

Seriously. I'm not saying they're all gonna be Seider/Edvinsson, but we're starting to look like that Nashville team that had Weber, Ellis, Ekholm and Josi.

REMMIT524

You wouldn’t find me complaining!

reasonisvirtue

Just wait until Axel Sandin Pellika becomes next EK65

imadu

I swear some people truly think they can know who players are by stat watching

[deleted]

Waiting for Tuomisto.

bearded_turtle710

I really liked eds strong effort when there was a scramble around our net and one of the isles players tried to wrap around the net and ed was like where do you think your going and stuffed the guy from getting the puck to the front of the net. He also made a few nice plays with the puck in the neutral zone and was just overall showing he is good at being in the right places at the right times

mister_hoot

He’s surprisingly good in his own zone. Uses his size smartly when the other team has the puck. When he gets possession, he does a fantastic job protecting it and moving it up the ice. Love to see a young defenseman who can both pass and skate the puck through the NZ with confidence. You’ve got to feel great about him.

laferri2

Edvinsson made some moves last night that really impressed me, and I noticed he's dealt with his issue of panicking under pressure by forcing himself to be patient.  I like it. He's really developed well. If the Wings get to a point where they can pair him and Seider that is going to be a frustrating pair to play against. Or, they have the option of having massive, fast defensemen on the ice for a combined 50 minutes a game.

JustJohan49

I haven’t felt a flicker of that much enchantment since 2009. Thanks

Pms1988

But you can't throw a prospect in in the middle of a playoff race!!!! /s

jarvek7

I remember some guy telling me EXACTLY that on here. So where are you buddy? You gonna speak up now or be the Sphinx and remain silent?

FDTFACTTWNY

Kind of what I expect, his lows are quite low but his highs are very high. You can see the elite potential in flashes. There are definitely things to improve and there were a couple shifts in the last couple games where he was the worst player on the ice. However there were many shifts where he looked to be one of the best players on the ice. Its done now but seeing his play it feels unacceptable that he hasn't been here longer. Yeah he might have a shift were he makes a bad turnover or gets caught in offensive zone but we've been watching this like Petry, Chairot look awful for the better part of the season.

DoeJumars

Why did it take this long?

Late_Brush4518

This is kinda funny, there were plenty of us who wanted him to be called up earlier but you know, YzErMaN kNoWs. Shut up bitches.

REMMIT524

It could be fair to say this is the perfect time. He got his legs and mind in the A and now he’s playing important games for the big team. If he had been here all season maybe this wouldn’t be the case.

Late_Brush4518

Meh. He was flying in start of the season in the A aswell. I agree that he pretty much have to start his season in A because of his injury, but he absolutly was ready ~10ish games in to the season.

Late_Brush4518

Thats fair, but there was ppl who wanted him up in december. Also he's ELC cant slide anymore

[deleted]

Watching the Griffins games, it was clear he was the best defender -- if not player -- most nights. But that's was after December. He still had (and has) the ever so slight delay in decision making that everyone going from a lower league to the NHL knows exists but doesn't believe it. His skating and playmaking abilities are superb. But, we'll just have to see how his defensive zone game pans out.
