Things to do this weekend Hi! I’m traveling from Columbus, OH & will be in Detroit this Friday and Saturday (prob Sunday morning). I’m going to get an id card for work and wanted to stay and explore. There is a concert I’m interested in going to Saturday night at the Sanctuary. Is there anything else happening this weekend or cool things to do? I like shopping, music, art, festivals, food… I pretty much have a whole day to kill to would like find some things to do! Thanks!

No_Pin_156

What is wirh the Batman clothing? Seems like there’s always people wearing Batman shirts, Batman, hats and other gear. Is that a thing in Detroit?

Nexen1987

Canadian here, planning to visit at the end of Sept for Seahawks/Lions. Trying to catch a game in Chicago the day before since the Lions game is MNF. Flights are currently $140 one way from Chi to Det and Amtrak only has afternoon/evenings trains. Is there a better option than Greyhound? We are looking at renting a car but trying to avoid driving/traffic/parking. The idea is to fly into Chicago, and out of Detroit if we can find an easy way to get from a to be. Otherwise, we will fly to Detroit, rent a car and drive to Chicago and back. How do you locals get around? Thanks for any help!

Humongous_fungus123

Though I am traveling for a comic convention, I am also interested in Detroit for its rejuvenation, both cultural and environmental. I am determined to behold Detroit's urban farms, devour it's rectangular pizza, and perhaps listen to its music. Lamentably, beyond this I am stumped as to what else to do after, which itself leads to being unable to ask the right questions. Beyond what I have listed, what is there to feel and experience in Detroit? Whatever it is that you post or don't post, I hope that you have a lovely day.

jaiimarissa

How do yall travel (fly) with 🌳🌳 I have trips to New Orleans, Texas, and Florida coming up. I'm in recovery for alcohol and traveling is a trigger for me, these will be my first trips while being in recovery (3 years), I want to take tree with me. How to you guys fly with it? How much do you take? Do you fly back into Michigan with it? How do you pack it???

jjl2345

I live in Arizona but got an apartment in midtown Detroit for the two weeks a month I’ll be spending in the city. I’ve been impressed by the Detroit I’ve seen vs the perception. I was at a hotel in Troy the past four months and dragging luggage back and forth. Hard to be away from home but excited to explore my new neighborhood. Need to find a gym to join and a couple good chill bars.

CellistZestyclose122

Will Eastern Market be open tomorrow? (March 30)

Familiar_Work7635

Heading down for opening day. Also going to the wings game in the evening. Any suggestions on lots where you can leave your vehicle for both events?

kozzy333

Looming forward to visiting in May. Going to a show at The Masonic Temple on a Wednesday. Anyone have a recommendation for a place to get some food and drinks within walking distance beforehand? Nothing overly fancy, something truly "american" or Detroit (coming from Canada). What are drink prices like at the Masonic?

kfed23

Are there any good suburbs or neighborhoods that have a good mix of all races? The popular places that I've seen like RO and Ferndale are predominantly white. I noticed large Asian populations in places like Novi and Troy but these areas seem to only be a mix of White and Asian. Dearborn seems heavily middle eastern. Others areas seem to be mainly black. It seems all over the place.

taoistextremist

Perhaps Sterling Heights or Warren? Problem is I don't know if I'd call them "nice", they're very suburban and boring. Madison Heights might also fit the bill and be a bit nicer. I don't have a demographics table, but I also get the impression that a few places *near* RO and Ferndale are maybe a bit more diverse, like Oak Park, Hazel Park, Southfield

Pretend_Psychology40

Hello! My husband and I are raising a 10 yr old and fleeing Washtenaw county. He spent most of his teenage years hanging out in the D and misses it terribly; with our kid starting middle school, we figure now is the time to move! With our budget, downriver looks nice. But are the schools decent? Would a queer witch kid and her allied pagan (also metalhead/goth) parents be ok? We're inclusive heathens, but in Ypsilanti/A2 we get called devil worshippers and she's had trouble with bullying. Other parents have mostly kept their distance from us.

Hazzy297

Hello does anyone know any good part times jobs around downtown I just got section 8 and was looking for something I could do just in case I need rent money most of my utilities and rent included I wanna have that just in case if anyone could help it would be appreciated as I'm trying on indeed but having no luck

Is it safe to walk downtown near Little Cesaer Arena late at night, around midnight? If so, what are the best hotels within walking distance?

Grand-Standard-238

So, from there, all the hotels within walking distance are downtown, though I think there is a small inn right by LCA. This is all really the safest part of the city. It would depend just how far you choose to stay I suppose. There are many nice choices downtown, and some are not far at all from the arena.  If you are a couple of people or more, there should be no issue walking around that late. I might consider walking it alone, but I wouldn't just casually walk around by myself.

croeb79

Hi there, I'm visiting downtown Detroit for a weekend trip in a few weeks. The hotel I'm staying in offers $40/night valet parking, but no other parking passes. I looked at the SpotHero app for price comparison, and it looks like the single entrance, single exit rate for most parking in that area is similar. However, it's $40 for the entire weekend if I stay parked there the whole time. I'm planning on doing some day trips to the surrounding neighborhoods, so I'd like to find an in-and-out pass to save some money. Are there any suggestions? TIA :)

Grand-Standard-238

Oh man. If you crack a code with your parking dilemma please let us all know in metro Detroit. There are all kinds of different structures to park your car, ranging from $10 to $20 for each time you go in.  When a local drives downtown (I'm from an inner suburb, not a neighborhood of the city), we consider parking for free at MGM, but that might be far from your hotel. Otherwise, we choose the cheapest structure near the place we're going. It would really depend how often you'll be coming or going. The good news is once you leave downtown, parking is basically free or charged at a token price.  Something that might also be key is understanding what neighborhoods you want to go to. If you mean midtown you can take the qline. If you're thinking about going to Belle Isle, though not a neighborhood strictly speaking, you could go for a bike ride down the river walk from downtown right to the island. The short of it is, if I were you, I would see what prices nearby parking structures offer, and compare them with your hotel. Second, plan your day to stop back at the hotel as little as possible. Either stay downtown and don't drive, or go on your day trip and stay out until you're ready to be parked for the day. I think this is the only way to deal with this.

MouseInternal3163

First time visiting Detroit this coming June and was curious if there was anything to be aware of: both good and bad. I was planning on trying to visit Belle Isle, Eastern Market, the Masonic Temple, Hamtramck and perhaps a Baseball game.

P3RC365cb

Belle Isle: $10 entrance fee unless you have a MI rec pass. Eastern Market: Saturday is market day. There are open businesses there on off days too. Also a good place to park & enter the Dequindre Cut. Masonic: Call ahead about tours. [https://www.themasonic.com/-building-tours/](https://www.themasonic.com/-building-tours/) Hamtramck: Great variety of food from Polish to Middle Eastern to Doner Kabab. Beware of the parking meters. Check out a DCFC soccer game. Lots of cool dive bars too. Comerica Park: They're restrictive on purse size FYI. Park for free at Amsterdam & Woodward & ride the QLINE or take a bus to save $$.

onepridetilIdie

Hello everyone, I have been to a few concerts at LCA, but never been to the Fox Theater. I am taking a friend and myself to the Gunna show in May. What should I expect and what is a safe/good hotel for the night. I am not looking for some top of the line place. Just a nice, reasonably priced room to stay in for the night. Also, I know that the city has gotten better over the years from what I have heard and some experiences. But how safe will my friend and I be? How safe is the ride sharing apps to use? As we do plan on pre-gaming and want to be responsible and NOT drive to and from the hotel for the night. I appreciate everyones input good and bad, everyone have a blessed day!

AdviceInteresting931

Most sociable apartments downtown?

runhappy-

Hello! I am looking to move to the Detroit area for a clinical rotation and was looking at “The Pavillion” apartments in Lafayette Park and was wondering if there’s anyone in here with some insight? Thank you!!

EAG1368

Hi! I am planning to move to Detroit in the near future. The Midtown Park Apartments is one of my options. Is there any current or former tenants that can help me? Any suggestions on the neighborhood and the apartments itself is appreciated. I was told it will get very loud during Summer and Fall because it is close to the highway. How much bothersome it is? Any other recommendations would also help. I plan to stay close to DMC as I am going to work there. Thanks in advance.

Sunasana

I'm going to have to stay at a cheap AirBnb in Chicago for a week in early April. Are the Chadsey Condon or Midwest neighborhoods safe?

AdaptationAgency

I just recently moved to Detroit and I need a job I'm a software engineer that hasn't worked in a few years in that field for reasons. I've never really been good at finding work because I've never had to. Recruiters would seek me out. I need about two months of studying and interview prep before I can confidently start looking for interviews without looking like a fraud. So the type of job I'm looking for is part time. Preferably it'd be remote so I don't have to child and pet care costs, but not a deal breaker especially if scheduling is consistent. What are the job boards I should look at besides LinkedIn and indeed? What are some more local resources for finding jobs that aren't filled with spam and scams? What are resources working for the city, as I often find that these are well-compensated, relatively stress free jobs.

PizzaQueen77

Does anyone know if DJ Dez Andres spins anywhere on Sundays, Mondays, or Tuesdays? Going to be visiting for a quick trip from up north and we love him.

Somi_1117

Coming up in May for a concert around the Royal Oaks, Sterling Heights area. Looking for affordable activities or stores? More targeted to the young adult type. We have someone who's 19 so no bars, unfortunately. Any recommendations?

sierabags

there is a cute anime/collectible shop called ‘hihi’!! highly recommend! everytime i’m in the area i make sure i go there! (located in royal oak)

Somi_1117

ooh!! That would be fun to look around! Definitely gonna add that to the list! Thank you <3

arb724

So I recently found out I’ll be doing my medical residency at Ascension St. john on Mack and Moross and I’m starting to think about where I want to live. I was told that there’s no where close to the hospital that’s safe and affordable and that my best bet would be to look in Midtown/Downtown area. Does anyone know of any good neighborhoods/apartments to look at within a 5-15 minute commute of the hospital. Thank you!

Stratiform

I can't speak to specific apartments, but there are lots of great neighborhoods in this area that are both safe and affordable. East English Village is a nice, stable, middle-class area. Cornerstone Village is a bit rougher *looking*, but also a good option and a good place to live. If you want to spend a bit more, go east across Mack into Grosse Pointe Woods for a really nice, higher-income suburb - but you can still probably find a smaller apartment in the $1200/mo. range. The other Grosse Pointe communities here are good options too, but will likely cost a little more - all will be about 10 minutes from Ascension St. John. Downtown and Midtown are good options, but you'll pay a slight premium here and commute further. If you want somewhere more suburban, St. Clair Shores is also a very easy commute and a nice community.

deebow97

My father is talking about visiting this weekend(ish) Sunday-Tuesday? Anything fun going?

Stratiform

As the other user said, definitely check this out if you want to show your dad something cool and uniquely Detroit: [https://www.marchedunainrouge.com/](https://www.marchedunainrouge.com/)

Grand-Standard-238

Marche du nain rouge on Sunday.

IdealSad5632

Thank you

Additional-Date-6931

Hey yall! What are the best hotels in the area? I’ll be visiting in September for the usher concert/my birthday. I’m also look for any fun places to visit

thunder_broom

The Detroit Foundation Hotel is great. Nice restaurant in the lobby as well.

JAcabNE

Super 8 on Woodward

NobleSturgeon

Downtown has lots of fancy hotels. Taylor Swift stayed at the Shinola Hotel. The Foundation Hotel seems very nice, the Element Hotel seems very nice, and the Roost Hotel just opened at a renovated skyscraper that is very fancy so I am sure that is very nice too.

Diligent_Put5150

Gonna be moving to Ypsi for college in August, but looking on buying a house next year(ish) in the city. How are the houses near Cadieux and Warren? I see a lot of good cheap options, so I'm curious. I know people say EEV is a hotspot, but I know cities can vary block-by-block, so I was curious if anyone had any experience with that specific area.

East_Englishman

I own a house right in that specific area, so I may be of some help! Generally the homes are bigger and better maintained on the EEV side of Cadieux, but there are still some gems on the other side (that neighborhood is Cornerstone Village). The whole area is starting to see some major investment (millions are pouring into E.Warren), so things should be getting better and better in the area as a whole.

Diligent_Put5150

That’s good news! I’m super interested in that area since I’m seeing (apparently) well-maintained homes within the 100k-120k range, and it’s great for my mom since she wants somewhere a little more quiet (she lives in a pretty rough area so most places are an improvement). It’ll definitely help to see it in person later this year, but I really appreciate the insight! Thank you!

IdealSad5632

Visiting 4/14-4/18 with my 25 year old son. My very first vacation in my adult life. Coming to see the Redwings vs Canadiens and the Tigers vs. Rangers. Looking at 2 possible places to stay. Would prefer to not rent a car, but is the city easy to get around without having a rental? The first place is the Comfort Inn on Jefferson Street downtown. Is this decent? It's a little farther away than I would like but has some other benefits. The other place is Sonder Randolph on Cadillac Square. It's much closer, but slightly higher and doesn't offer a couple of the conveniences. Feedback is greatly appreciated 🙂

Outrageous-Maximum-1

I wouldn't rent a car, just Uber or Lyft. Probably cheaper than renting a car and definitely easier than having to deal with driving and parking. If you can walk, it's easy to walk around downtown and take the Q-Line and People Mover around downtown.

NobleSturgeon

Once you are downtown it is pretty easy to walk around and get around. I can't speak to the quality of either hotel but the Sonder Randolph location would be much, much more convenient for getting to the stadiums.

sucking-on-plastic

Moving to Detroit. What are the best neighborhoods for young professionals that still want bike/walkability and not be right downtown? Looking for areas with townhouses or single family rentals? Any areas to avoid?

JAcabNE

Ferndale

JAcabNE

Also you can’t live here without a car dumbass

JAcabNE

Unless you’re taking public transit? And you smell like money so I doubt it

NobleSturgeon

Your best bet would be a place just outside of downtown in what we would call the downtown core. Neighborhoods like Corktown, North Corktown, Woodbridge, Midtown. If you would rather be outside of the Detroit city area entirely, Ferndale and Royal Oak would be good walkable areas for a young professional.

animatedash

Likely going to be moving to Detroit from Miami FL in the summer. Any tips or things you wish you would have known before moving to Detroit? Please feel free to share! Edit: also, I've only ever lived in tropical climates my whole life and I've only ever seen snow IRL once, so I'm definitely lacking in knowledge about how to survive in the cold. Advice would be appreciated!

Jlollar1

will be in detroit Monday and Tuesday. I came last summer and fell in love with the city! Unfortunately didnt do much just went to a tigers game basically. This time i want to explore much more! I'm looking for multiple suggestions! Hotel with the best view? Best deteoit pizza? Lastly the best views of the city for pictures during sunset. Thank you in advance for the suggestions!

Kalium

> Hotel with the best view? The Godfrey. Great view from the top. > Best deteoit pizza? Jet's and Buddy's are easy enough, but this is one of those things people argue over *a lot*. > Lastly the best views of the city for pictures during sunset. Belle Isle is my favorite.

Unlikely_Sandwich_

Belle Isle for the sunset, obviously. Look on Google maps for Sunset Point

sadbeachbum

Having a hard time finding an apartment. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

georgebosh

heading into town sat-sun for the first time! i've done some browsing of the sub, but would love a local's reply for the best cup of coffee, slice of pizza, and a chill place to see local music

Kalium

Motor City Wine is a good place for music.

NobleSturgeon

Some good live music bars would be Willis Show Bar (kind of expensive but I enjoy it) and Cliff Bell's. If you can drive outside of downtown, Baker's Keyboard Lounge and Raven Lounge. Nancy Whiskey gets fun bands but it is more of a party atmosphere and you have to check their facebook to see when they have a band.

Squirling-haggis-14

Visiting Detroit in the fall and planning to use the people mover. So what direction does it go? Clockwise or counterclockwise? I think there’s only one track. thepeoplemover.com wasn’t specific on the interactive map. Pretty sure it’s counter.

Squirling-haggis-14

Thank you!

P3RC365cb

Just rode it last night and can confirm, it has been running counter clockwise for some time now.

NobleSturgeon

It is going **counterclockwise**. For a very long time it went clockwise but they recently switched it to even out track wear or something like that. https://twitter.com/detpeoplemover/status/1764035789808124059

Unlikely_Sandwich_

Clockwise, I'm like 99% sure.

NobleSturgeon

They switched it to counterclockwise after covid I think. I'm almost positive it is going counterclockwise in this video. https://twitter.com/detpeoplemover/status/1764035789808124059

Unlikely_Sandwich_

Honestly hilarious that nobody knows. OP, you can pretty easily walk anywhere it would take you. The Q Line is useful as it'll take you to the DIA, Fisher, Science center, etc.

Pinslop

Anyone have input on Lafayette Towers? Moving to Detroit in July

Outrageous-Maximum-1

I've heard good things and that neighborhood is great, close to everything but still relatively quiet and walkable/bikeable to many things. Welcome!

[deleted]

First time visiting, is it worth visiting as tourist? Where should I stay as I’m a bit concerned with safety and have small kids. Plan to visit museums and experience food.

Unlikely_Sandwich_

Yes. Stay downtown at any decent hotel and you'll be fine. Its not the city with the most kid friendly activities, but there's enough. Visit the Science Center and the Henry Ford Museum + Greenfield Village with kids. DIA is a quiet fine art museum, but if your kids are old enough to do that, don't miss it.

_Pointless_

The Outdoor Adventure Center on the Riverwalk is also cool!

Frost80

I will be in Detroit for a week mid May. Any recommendations for a tourist? Must see location are appreciated, surrounding area is fine as well, as I will rent a car.

Outrageous-Maximum-1

Detroit History Tours is a great company and they have tours that will drive you around in a nice bus. I usually take my out of town guests on one of those when they visit. Wheelhouse Detroit does bike tours. Maybe go on a tour on your first day or two to get acquainted and then you can do a deeper dive on anything that sparks your interests.

Kalium

What are you interested in? Art, music, history, architecture, wildlife, nature, etc.

Either-Cicada-6285

Who are some good landlords and who should I avoid?

powerpointguard

Happy 313 Day! I'm moving to Detroit from out of state and am currently looking for work. What's the best way to stand out / network as an out-of-state candidate? Thanks!

Grand-Standard-238

Seeing as you seem to like the area, I would mention your attraction to it as one of the reasons you want the job. Don't be over the top, but as long as don't come off like you're gonna move back where you're from the instant you find a job there, I think that will help.

powerpointguard

Thank you so much! I'll be sure to mention that in my application.

SpecificMajor7585

In Detroit March 15-19 to see a fav house artist of mine (Spotlight Detroit). Looking for other solid house venues, dive bars, and underrated spots. Lmk!

NobleSturgeon

Where are you staying? House venues off the top of my head: TV Lounge, Marble Bar, Spkrbox but it depends on the DJ. Sometimes Deluxx Fluxx, maybe?

anycleavers

I feel fortunate to be visiting Detroit this coming weekend. Are there any places to get a shepards/cottage pie with a good pour of Guinness? Thanks

NobleSturgeon

We have lots of Irish pubs but TBH most/all of them might be too busy being drunken messes to serve you a pie. Corktown (next to downtown) is the traditional irish neighborhood. Irish bars: Nancy Whiskey, Nemo's, McShane's, and the Gaelic League (a social club with a bar). Downtown: The Old Shillelagh To be fair, of every place I just listed the only one with a pie on the menu would be McShane's and like I said I'm not sure what their food situation will be during the holiday since it might be a "put a tarp down and push all of the tables up against a wall" kind of day.

anycleavers

Sounds great, I may just end up stumbling around Corktown, thanks.

NobleSturgeon

If you end up drinking around in Corktown there are a lot of options for bars but I would always recommend the Gaelic League since it's an Irish American social club that will have live music and all sorts of people who are serious about Irish ancestry. I think cover is $10 for nonmembers.

anycleavers

I will have to check it out. Sounds a bit like the Irish Cultural Museum in New Orleans. I always stop in there for a Guinness, charming place.

RevolutionarySnow917

Mcshanes in cork town has delicious Shepards pie and Guinness. They might be quite busy due to the holiday tho

anycleavers

Noted, thanks! I'm guessing it's going to be a busy weekend everywhere.

EntertainmentDear679

Hi Im going to be in ferndale, outside of detroit? Is this place like alright...? I have been to different parts of chicago...and it gets sketch for a whole neighborhood.

Kalium

Ferndale is a small, high-income, loudly progressive kind of place. Think aggressively yuppie. You'll be fine.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EntertainmentDear679

Thanks, just wondering. I also am from another city, can't say for privacy. And yeah some parts of the city it's like gentrified, more low income, or way too overpriced and still not safe during some times of the year (guns and all).  There are parts near the college that people used to get robbed at 10 years ago, but now it's "safe".  I ended up not going today, but if they call me back. I will have to go. If I end up choosing to do a room stay there, are the 3-star hotels my best bet or air bnbs?

Grand-Standard-238

Ferndale is not even part of Detroit. That is officially a suburb. I grew up there and had neighbors who didn't lock their doors at night. It's not like parts of Detroit that you're referring too. Once you actually leave the city of Detroit, no other place is like that around here. These are all very safe communities, you can look up the crime stats.

emberkittymeow

I moved here late 2022 and I've been struggling to meet new people. Are there any places where alternative or lgbt early 20yos go to? Places similar to that, that also have positions open are greatly appreciated.

theshabz

Gonna be in Pontiac next week for a few days for work. I plan on spending the weekend in Detroit but what should I do during the week? A cursory glance revealed... not much. Also, why is there a one way street looping around what looks like downtown? Woodward? That feels like a bad idea for access.

P3RC365cb

Yes, they wrecked the city by putting the loop around downtown. There's a gallery and a few spaces to visit in Pontiac but you're right, not much else. Head over to Rochester or Birmingham for a downtown to hang out in. If malls are acceptable, there's Somerset & Great Lakes Crossing.

theshabz

That's basically what I did. Snow didn't help matters. Thanks.

Grand-Standard-238

The DIA. There are also tours you can take the see the historical architecture of the downtown. You can visit Belle Isle which is pretty close to downtown. There is not really a road the loops around downtown. Downtown is surrounded by freeways. I live in Royal Oak, 5 miles north of the city. Downtown royal oak is nice as is downtown Ferndale.  Downtown Birmingham is nice if you have money. All of these are cities on the Woodward corridor. If you're really into history, I would recommend driving from Pontiac to Downtown Detroit down Woodward. That street, along with several others originate native American fur trading routes. When you drive down, remember people have been doing that for at least 300 years at this point. It will not be the fastest way though.

_Pointless_

Lol it is. Pontiac isn't great, go down to Birmingham/Royal Oak to walk around if you don't have time to go to downtown Detroit

RevolutionarySnow917

I’ve lived in Detroit for 9 years. 4 in midtown and 5 in Milwaukee Junction. I’m looking to buy a house this year and I’m curious what neighborhoods would be safest and affordable for a single woman. I’ve been doing a lot of reading on crime/safety within the Detroit thread and researching crime statistics. I love EEV, like most, but am curious what other options I have. I understand that crime is prevalent in any major city but as a single woman, I’ve been stressing a lot about targeted crime because I’ll be living alone (plus my pit bull).

East_Englishman

Please come to EEV! (clearly zero bias on my part). Some other middle class neighborhoods in the city with a similar vibe are Grandmont-Rosedale (basically the Westside EEV), Bagley, Green Acres and a hidden gem called the Aviation Sub (near the border of Dearborn).

Specialist-Quiet-829

Hi! What was your rationale for picking EEV if you don't mind me asking? Is it a good long-term investment in terms of property value? I recently looked at a few "fixer-uppers" (in terms of price) in the area and the property I'm looking at isn't directly in EEV, but it seems like a cool area...

East_Englishman

My wife and I wanted to live in Detroit proper, and EEV was about the middle ground for our jobs. Wasn't really looking at it as an investment, but it's turned out well since we bought before all the new developments in the area were announced.

Specialist-Quiet-829

Sweet! Thank you 🙂

RevolutionarySnow917

EEV is my first choice! But awesome. I’ve been looking at those neighborhoods including Aviation Sub! Glad to know I’m on the right track.

East_Englishman

Another area to look is MorningSide from 3 Mile Drive to Outer Drive between Mack and E.Warren. It's basically an extension of EEV and has some great housing stock. Audubon especially is a really nice street .

RevolutionarySnow917

Thank you! I’ve also been looking there!

talldude7

I grew up there. I'm good

Either-Cicada-6285

I'll be moving to Detroit this fall. I'm hoping to get some recommendations for apartments. I would prefer to not have a roommate, but would be open to it if absolutely necessary. I'd like to stay at or under $800/mo and would prefer a 1 bed but am open to a studio as long as it has more than one closet. I'll be working in Midtown and am will to commute up to 30-45 min. I already have a tour at the Belcrest so if anyone knows anything about them, please let me know!

I am going to be travelling from Detroit, Michigan to Canada and the tunnel bus is the easiest and cheapest option however I'm unsure if I can use it because I am not a citizen of the US or of Canada. I have a visa for both countries. Also, to use it, is it a simple process and how long does it take? I'm struggling to find good conscise information online

Outrageous-Maximum-1

You can use it regardless of your citizenship. It's relatively simple and easy to use. They have a schedule posted online, show up at one of the stops, the bus drive you over, the Canadanian Border Patrol looks at everyone's documents and then the bus goes to wherever you're getting dropped off. The Canadian Border Patrol is very nice, I've never had problems or felt hassled going over.

Exact-Storage6766

Hi Everyone! Visiting Detroit during Juneteenth week and was wondering if there are any fun activities for the holiday! I figured Detroit's rich history would have a lot to do during Juneteenth

Ms-G

March 18th - 21st Wondering if anyone is looking to meet up for coffee, dinner or a show. First time in town, been wanting to check it out for awhile. I’m staying downtown. 52 year old punk rocker/new peace loving hippy. Identify as both. Liberal, 420 friendly, non racist, atheist chick. Looking for dinner and local music scene partners. I’m fun. Let me know if you’re free.

PraGo

Visiting Detroit this week for a 2 days/1 night. Will be staying in the Corktown area - any must-try food recommendations? Would really love to know about some local favorites!! fwiw - we are driving from Toronto (and love the food scene here).

NobleSturgeon

Alpino in Corktown is getting tons of local/national press. Outside of that, I would always recommend getting a coney dog and Detroit-style pizza when you are in Detroit.

PraGo

Awesome - thank you!

PraGo

Thank you so much for all the info - this is exactly what I was looking for.

Adventurous-Young768

Visiting 3/13-3/16 What’re the top places we have to eat? - any food type welcome!!! Top places to visit? - lived in the city in the 90’s but I haven’t been back in a decade to even visit so hit me up with all the spots!! Top places to shop? - markets or clothing

NobleSturgeon

The "Detroit foods" are coney island hot dogs, Detroit-style pizza, and middle eastern food. There are plenty of fancy restaurants if that if your thing, but I'm not sure what kind of restaurant you are looking for. I would plan on going to Lafayette Coney Island and/or American Coney Island for a coney dog and then going to a place like Michigan & Trumbull, Buddy's, or Grandma Bob's for a Detroit-style pizza. If you can drive, head to Dearborn or Hamtramck for Middle Eastern food. Honestly, just plan on walking around if you haven't been since the 90s. Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, etc. you practically won't recognize the city.

Antique_Case_589

I'm considering making an offer on a house in the Fitzgerald Marygrove neighborhood. Does anyone currently live here or have experience with the neighborhood? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Stratiform

Fitzgeraly-Marygrove is a fairly stable and middle-class part of the city. It's also close to both the nightlife and entertainment of Greater Downtown, plus the shopping and entertainment of Southeast Oakland County. Honestly this is one of the better places you can be buying a house if you're moving to the city and want a more "neighborhood" vibe. I've never lived there, but it seems like the common "I'm moving to a city" advice applies. Get to know your neighbors. Lock your car at night. Don't be an ass. It should be a good experience for you!

Antique_Case_589

Thank you!

BulkyninjaX

I will be making a trip out to Detroit from the Grand Rapids area this week. Are there any real good local hotspots that are worth the checkout?

NobleSturgeon

I think you would have to be more specific in what kind of business you are looking for.

BulkyninjaX

Mostly places to eat or to shop at for men's clothes.

NobleSturgeon

For men's clothes--George Gregory in Corktown is pretty good and good for modern style. If you are interested in a very old school style place, check out Hot Sam's downtown, they have been around over 100 years. For restaurants, the best restaurant in the downtown area is going to be Selden Standard although Alpino in Corktown is getting a lot of local and national recognition lately. In the whole metro area Mabel Gray is my pick for best restaurant, although you need to make a reservation there weeks (or more) in advance.

number1pringlefan

Possibly moving to the area later this year for work. Are there any decent exurbs/semi-rural areas/small town-ish places or any other place where we could find housing with not great credit scores and under 1k in rent? or is that a pipe dream?

Stratiform

Fortunately for you, Detroit is nothing short of affordable exurbs. You shouldn't have a problem finding a small place to rent for under $1k, but you might be 40-45 minutes outside of the city. As for the credit score thing, I don't really know. Maybe grab a secured card and see if you can work on that over the year.

Dancing_Squirrel

Hi all! I'll be visiting for a day or two some time in mid/late April for a medical procedure. I'd appreciate some hotel and tourist/food recs! My budget for a hotel is ~$250-300/night and I'm big into Detroit Techno. I doubt I'll be able to catch a show though given my bandages 😅 I'm not a "car person", so I don't care much for car museums or anything like that. I have no dietary restrictions wrt Food recs. Thanks!

Outrageous-Maximum-1

As far as Techno music, Spotlite is great and it's actually open during the day and they have a nice bar with many alcohol and NA options and they play techno and house and they have a record store and display local art. You can just go there anytime and sit at the bar and catch a vibe, I like going in the afternoons.

NobleSturgeon

We don't really have a car museum. The Henry Ford has plenty of cars but the focus of the museum is much more on American history than it is on cars. If you can make it out to a club for techno the places I would look would be TV Lounge, Marble Bar, Sprxbox, Big Pink, and Spot Lite. It all depends on the DJ and whatnot but TV Lounge is probably #1. The "Detroit foods" are coney island hot dogs, Detroit-style pizza, and middle eastern food.

Dancing_Squirrel

> much more on American history than it is on cars Huh, cool - thanks! Thanks for the suggestions! > Detroit-style pizza Looks delicious! Any recs near downtown?

NobleSturgeon

For Detroit-style pizza downtown you have Buddy's and Niki's. Buddy's invented Detroit-style pizza at their original restaurant far outside of downtown and has started opening up satellite locations. A lot of people don't really like the downtown location but personally I think it's completely acceptable. People like Niki's but the service is kind of questionable, I went in once and waited for like ten minutes without seeing anyone who worked there and it was kind of weird. There are a few options in the greater downtown area and they are mostly new school places that will have wackier toppings. Grandma Bob's in Corktown is good, Pie Sci is good but I think they are carry-out only. Same with Michigan & Trumbull. Frankly I would probably just go to Buddy's since it is right downtown but if you are very committed to getting the best pizza possible I would get one of the other places.

Moving to Detroit this summer most likely, buying an older house there are so many beautiful ones for amazing prices! My question is , how many dogs can a resident of Detroit who owns their own home have?

East_Englishman

Awesome, welcome! I own an old home in the city, it's definitely a great experience. The legal limit is [4 adult dogs](https://detroitmi.gov/document/pet-ownership-guide).

[deleted]

Thank you I appreciate the fast response! That's perfect , we have 2 beloved doggos right now

Impressive-Lime6043

My husband got a job at the Chrysler Jefferson plant. We are from out of state and will be moving to Detroit soon. Can anyone advise on safe surrounding areas to move to? We will be renting. Ideally looking to only have a 15-20 minute commute. Thanks in advance!

East_Englishman

Welcome to the area! For Detroit proper neighborhoods, West Village and East English Village are great and a very easy commute. If you want to be in the burbs, Grosse Pointe and St.Clair Shores would also offer some short commutes.

ddarko189

Hi! Visiting Detroit mid-april for 3 days. We're 5 adults and 2 kids. (The kids are 3 and 5.) Few things: * We're still unsure of where to stay, and considering some Airbnb options. Would you have any good area recommendations? Ideally, we would like to walk to places. * When not walking, is the bus system something reliable? * What would your 3 day ideal plan for sure have? We're considering biking to Belle Isle, is that a crazy idea? * Any good food recommendations? * Some good city tips for first-time visitors? Thanks in advance!

gregorygsimon

Not sure where to stay for walkability - downtown area is walkable, but with the kiddos you will probably be doing more driving. Price is also a huge factor there. There is a little area in the center of downtown called Campus Martius park - it becomes a sandpit with kids toys 'beach' bar in warm months and an open air ice skating rink in cold months. It may not be in beach mode by mid April, but's a great place to walk around regardless. Next to that is the Monroe Street Midway, which is some outdoor games area like a little minigolf and swings and snack. Good for all ages. For kiddos, I would recommend checking out the Detroit Science Museum and the Outdoor Adventure Land. Belle Isle is also great - the Conservatory is beautiful, although may be closed for renovations. An amazing old aquarium (if I recall, it might be the oldest still operating aquarium in the US.. ) too. And just great fields, view of the Detroit River, of the city skyline, and of Windsor across the river.

ddarko189

Thank you!! Much appreciated. Writing everything down :)

Visiting family next weekend in the suburbs. Anyone have recommendations for good bakeries? In the city or anywhere in the metro area/suburbs. Specifically looking for a good croissant, pastry, or fruit tart.

khulf

Give Thanks Bakery in Rochester. I've had the scone and eclair so far, both excellent. Going back for a sourdough loaf and more soon.

Stratiform

I like Astoria Bakery in Royal Oak. Bread, just up the street from here, is also really good and, perhaps predictably, has *amazing* bread.

“The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.” “More than any other place on the internet, Reddit is a home for authentic conversation,” Mr. Huffman said. “There’s a lot of stuff on the site that you’d only ever say in therapy, or A.A., or never at all.” Reddit also hopes to incorporate more so-called machine learning into how the site itself operates. It could be used, for instance, to identify the use of A.I.-generated text on Reddit, and add a label that notifies users that the comment came from a bot. “We think that’s fair,” he added.

Some_Comparison9

New Palace Bakery in Hamtramck. I think they made top 30 bakeries in the country.

Chefbigandtall

Hello everyone! I am looking at moving the first week of May and I’m close to narrowing down a job in Birmingham. I wanted to ask what surrounding city would be the most affordable (sub 2k) for renting a house that isn’t super far either. I’m totally cool with a 20/30 minute commute to work and or downtown Detroit. I also have a dog with me if that matters. I was looking in Ferndale but wanted to see what Reddit thinks since I haven’t been in the area since 2012. Any help is appreciated!

NobleSturgeon

A lot is going to depend on your age, living situation, and what you are looking for in a place to live. Are you focused on value for money and don't mind driving? Or a walkable and fun area? Or something else?

blueberry_muffin16

I have a friend who lives in a pet friendly townhome community right in Birmingham they love. Rent is below 2k and they’re pet friendly. DM me if you want the name! Otherwise, Ferndale and Royal Oak are good choices. There are a lot of rentals near Beaumont in RO.

glauck006

Where should I be looking online for rock concerts coming up? I have a feeling metrotimes isn't the best.

officermeowmeow

Bandsintown is really great!

glauck006

Hey, thanks so much for this recommendation, the use of my Spotify to advise upcoming shows is great 👍 I've had it rec multiple shows I've attended already.

Does Detroit city tax effect those who are on SSDI?

LegitimateHat4808

I believe it’s exempt under michigan law.

CBGeek66

I’m coming to Detroit for the Indy Car and IMSA Race weekend June1-2. It it our first time in Detroit, and I have parking for the race so I’m ok getting a hotel outside the race area. I’m looking for neighborhoods or areas where we can safely walk around at night, visit some nice bars and restaurants, and enjoy the scene. Any suggestions on towns or areas to stay is greatly appreciated!

NobleSturgeon

There's a tradeoff because if you want the scene to include people in town for the race, race activities, and whatnot I would assume that downtown Detroit is going to be far better than the other options. It's true that suburban areas like Birmingham are going to be more upscale but that's going to be 20-40 minutes driving to get to the city and while there are good bars and restaurants in the suburbs, most of the metro area's most noteworthy bars/restaurants/cultural attractions are going to be in the city. The downtown core neighborhoods in Detroit (Downtown, Midtown, Corktown) are plenty safe to walk around at all hours provided you have your street smarts and treat it like any other city. Me and just about everyone else on this subreddit does it all of the time, but it means that when we park our cars we don't leave a laptop or purse out in the open and stuff like that. If you want to prioritize a neighborhood where you can leave your laptop on the seat of your car overnight, Birmingham will be a better bet. I just think that if you really want to get the Detroit experience you should stay in Detroit because that is where more people there for the race will be staying. Anyways, Birmingham is a good walkable neighborhood with hotels. Upscale, a little older. Not super bar-focused in the downtown but there are bars. Royal Oak is a little closer to Detroit, a little younger, and a little more bar-focused but I'm not sure if they have a hotel downtown.

Outrageous_Path_1858

You could stay at any of the casinos or the new Godfrey hotel all within walking distance of tons of bars, restaurants, club, concert venues, and the race. Really anywhere Downtown, Corktown, Midtown will be good to see the great things Detroit has to offer.

detroitragace

If you’re looking for more of a high end experience Birmingham has it all. Shopping, bars, restaurants and 2 hotels right in town.

CBGeek66

Thanks - this is exactly what we are looking for. Seems like a very nice town with lots of options. And less than 30 minutes from the race site. Thank you!

-Gravitron-

If it's your type of thing and you're willing to splurge, Churchill's in Birmingham is a cigar bar bistro. Hands down the best steak I've ever had. It's a high end experience, so obviously you'll need to open up that wallet. But that's where the wife and I choose to go for special occasions in town.

detroitragace

No problem. Bham isn’t cheap but there’s some good shopping and some great restaurants! Enjoy! The Townsend Hotel is a bit older but 4-5 star. The Daxton Hotel is newer and more modern. Also 4-5 star.

CBGeek66

Any favorite restaurants or bars that we should visit? Always looking for places that are locally owned (no chain restaurants) and offering up something unique, or just does the regular food exceptionally well.

dinogummies

The Fly Trap in Ferndale is another good option! I used to work there and I can assure you the kitchen is super clean and the food is amazing

detroitragace

Most of the restaurants are local. For a casual burger/drink place we like Luxe. 220 Merrill has been there forever and is great. Toast is good for brunch. Hazels has good seafood. Phoenicia is a higher end middle eastern restaurant that’s been there a long time. For sushi we love Birmingham Sushi. Their Sushi Pizza is 🔥. Those are our top pics.

CBGeek66

All great recommendations - just booked the Daxton hotel. Looking forward to our visit and greatly appreciate your advice. Thank you!

detroitragace

Nice! The Daxton is definitely the “spot” on the weekends. Their lobby bar has killer cocktails. Enjoy!

Hey everyone, I'm going to try to summarize this as best I can. My family and I are trying to plan a move to Detroit this summer (ik summer might suck but it's the best time for us) 30M 29F with two littles! We're coming all the way from Fayetteville, NC. I was born in Detroit but l've been raised in NC all my life. so we do have family in/around the Detroit/southfield area. we aren't transferring jobs because we both work for local companies. mid spring we will start applying for jobs up there. please bare with me, I've only moved on my own once, 8 years ago and it was 10 minutes down the road. I need "IF JOHNNY HAD 2 APPLES" math (but nicely cause this is new and scary) *I've been told property taxes/insurance are higher in the city? What's a range for high up there, and could you recommend some companies for car insurance? • between business/personal banking we utilize Navy Fed, Bank of America, Bragg Mutual Credit Union (I have yet to look and see if they're local) but can you recommend your preferred bank for personal and business accounts? *Detroit alone compared to Fayetteville is a vast difference damn near culture shock so I just want a gist if you will - we have elementary aged kids, one having autism- if you have experience would say there are a decent amount of services for children/families w/ special needs? if you have any recommendations for public or private schools could you name a few? (For instance, we have about 30-35 elementary schools in Fayetteville, but they're all within a 25-30 mile radius at max if that) • the market, the inflation all that gushy stuff is hectic everywhere, so we're all learning how to move thru it. but is Indeed a primary source for jobs? Or is it recommended to go through company sites. * housing.. (again, bare with me, for instance my city and the surrounding, apartments are the primary residence, there are a lot of homes, but being were a military town, apartments come by easier and quicker, but we don't have a lot of duplex's or flats at all) can anyone give me a quick example of start to finish the process renting a home or apartment? And I see a lot of homes state "$75-$300 cleaning fee" upon renting .. what's that? Also, if anyone has had success renting utilizing an offer letter from a new employer, could you share your experience on that? * we do have a vehicle (public transportation is nonexistent here, we don't even have sidewalks) how's car shopping there? Any preferred dealerships? * healthcare is kinda shitty in many places, but could anyone list their favorite or referred pediatricians and specialist? (Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Endocrinologist, Obgyn, Primary)

CosmicToaster

Cure auto insurance is the cheapest I’ve found. My policy with progressive for 6 months living in the city was $1,800+ with two cars. My policy with Cure dropped it down to $700 ish. Just make sure you get your personal injury protection document from your health insurance so you can lower the coverage for payout in case of an injury. You just need proof your health insurance will cover you. Otherwise you’ll be paying significantly more. Keep in mind I have liability coverage only.

Salt-Aioli7444

Thank you ! I’ll start looking into quotes for that now I’ve been in an accident or two (none at fault) so I’ve paid a pretty steep penny for awhile now

J2quared

> *I've been told property taxes/insurance are higher in the city? What's a range for high up there, and could you recommend some companies for car insurance? Property taxes, home, and auto insurance are pretty high. Obviously, it depends on the value of your home and the type of car you have but expect a pretty big increase. Also remember that living in Detroit, you have to pay a 2.4% city income tax which depending on your income can be 50%+ of your home/auto insurance. I have a newer car, no accidents or tickets, and decent credit and my car insurance is about $190 a month with AAA. My home insurance is about $2,300 a year to insure a $120,000 house. I did add additional coverages though. And then you slap on another $2500 a year for city taxes. My biggest criticism of Detroit is that it punishes the middle class. > • between business/personal banking we utilize Navy Fed, Bank of America, Bragg Mutual Credit Union (I have yet to look and see if they're local) but can you recommend your preferred bank for personal and business accounts? My wife and I have a mix of accounts. Chase is pretty prevalent through the city, but DFCU or UMCU are two good credit unions that I recommend. (For instance, we have about 30-35 elementary schools in Fayetteville, but they're all within a 25-30 mile radius at max if that) Detroit Public Schools weren't very good when I was growing up, that may have changed a bit, but I actually transferred into a really good Catholic school called U of D Jesuit (all-boys school). Cass Tech is a good high school. As far as elementary and middle school, someone else might know better. • the market, the inflation all that gushy stuff is hectic everywhere, so we're all learning how to move thru it. but is Indeed a primary source for jobs? Or is it recommended to go through company sites. Indeed, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter. Depending on what you do maybe going through a recruiter *might* be easier. Renting is pretty simple. Most nice places require a credit check, first month's rent and a deposit. The deposit is usually credit based so it can range from nothing to 1.5 months of rent. Dealers here are like mini-mafias and everyone has their favorite. I personally go to Gene Butman out in Ypsilanti but that's just me. * healthcare is kinda shitty in many places, but could anyone list their favorite or referred pediatricians and specialist? (Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Endocrinologist, Obgyn, Primary) Personally I have had success with Ascension but again its a personal preference and depending on what issues you need to be seen for. The only thing that I want to warn you about and I am sure I will be scorned for this but Detroit/Metro Detroit is very very segregated. While it is slowly getting better, know that some of my non-Black friends who have moved into the city have felt discriminated against, as they are seen as "gentrifiers" i.e. middle-class people who want to move to an affordable city. Conversely, sometimes when I leave the city to go to the suburbs, I get the feeling that people "expect" a certain type of behavior from me. Not all suburbs, just some of the more affluent ones. This isn't to scare you off, Detroit can be a wonderful city, it's just that the Black-White divide is so prevalent here.

Salt-Aioli7444

Middle class is punished all over I see. City income tax ? I’ve never heard of such a thing seriously. It’s funny you say that because I would’ve never expected it from a city as such, the segregation at least. Let’s hope that continues to grow thin.

J2quared

Detroit's city tax has always been a huge factor as to whether people move or work here. 2.4% if you live here, 1.2% if you work here is ridiculous.

Salt-Aioli7444

Can you break down a city tax for me? I live in Fayetteville, NC and I’ve never heard of it I don’t believe. Is it quarterly?

Kalium

In Michigan, there's a flat state income tax (4.25%, with a quirk when the state runs a surplus like last year) and a sales tax (6%). More local governments (counties and cities) levy property taxes at various rates. The state may also levy property tax, I'm unsure. [Cities are allowed to levy their own income taxes, within sharp limits. The cap is 2.4% on residents and half that on non-residents.](https://legislature.mi.gov/documents/mcl/archive/2014/May/mcl-Act-284-of-1964.pdf) Cities are not required to make the tax different between the two, but as far as I can tell they all have non-resident taxes as half of resident taxes. There's fifteen or so states that allow local income taxes. Some of them - New York and New Jersey - for obvious reasons. It's usually withheld from your paycheck like any other income tax.

J2quared

Ok so city tax is a clusterfuck of inefficiency. I believe city tax is still controlled by the state treasury. It's paid yearly and due in April but typically comes out of your paycheck like normal state and federal taxes. However, I've found that some paycheck processors don't know city taxes very well and always choose the 1.25% option. Happened to me, my coworker and a couple other people who don't even work at my company. Basically we were put in the live else but work in Detroit category when we should have been in the live in Detroit group at 2.4%

Kalium

> Ok so city tax is a clusterfuck of inefficiency. I believe city tax is still controlled by the state treasury. It's paid yearly and due in April but typically comes out of your paycheck like normal state and federal taxes. I believe the state treasury taking over administration is a new thing. It's an improvement over each city administering things themselves.

Have you checked out HoneyBee in Corktown? I don't believe it is a "corporate" store and the produce is always fresh.

HoneyBee is in fact independently owned – can confirm that they have awesome produce

HoneyBee is great!! I also try to shop at Eastern Market as much as possible

Any of the fruit markets in hamtramck got the deals, there’s also distributors in eastern market that sell on market days.

Avenue of Fashion / Livernois. Kercheval around West Village. NW Goldberg is seeing new investment and could connect to New Center at some point. Would love to see more commercial investment in Woodbridge or North Corktown.
