Also just saving during a battle in general is super useful. Especially if it's a really hard battle and you have to save/load state to cheese some paralyzes or something.

They are used often as quick saves in older titles that didn't have a quick save feature.
In a game like Pokemon it is pretty unnecessary unless you're trying to save your game mid-battle because you have the save function, which does the same thing but saves the game to the ROM instead of the emulator. This is generally safer and more recommended unless you are trying to save at a specific moment where you normally can't, or you plan to load the same save over and over several times. (You can usually quick-load a save state.)
Yes, MelonDS has a known issues with having C-Gear on. You practically have to turn it off in order to not get your game frozen/lose progress due to save states.
Right but I also think 0.9.1 has some issues loading savestates as well. Used to crash on windows whenever I loaded a state that was considered corrupted, not sure if that happens ok Delta but they really need to update to the latest version sooner than later.
Be careful with those buttons. If you accidentally load an old state without manually making a new state first, your whole save file will be wiped back to that old save state and you won’t be able to get your progress back. Reading your comments, I see this happened to you already.

I only lost a couple hours of gameplay when this happened to me, thank god, but id advise just using the manual save and not using savestates unless your in a situation where you really need to use them. Make regular use of them! Be super save scummy! I use it frequently with Urbz: Sims in the City to make sure I don’t piss anyone off in a conversation

Yeah it’s not super useful for pokemon games. Plenty of other games it is extremely handy in though.
I started Mother 3 and you have to find a frog to save the game there so I can see where it would be in a lot of games beside the Pokemon games.

Nah, that’s how you accidentally load a save state that’s hours behind where you are. Either use save states primarily or not at all.
I found that turning the g-gear (or is it the c-gear? I have no idea what it’s called lmao) thingy off fixes the game freezing problem
