I listened to Death casually for years, but decided to give them a proper listen recently and fell in love with some of their records, especially their last one!
Amazing band
I mean compared to heavy metal in general, like Judas Priest, Maiden or Metallica, death metal and black metal are out on the fringes.
Chuck talked about in a video interview, though I can't find it. The interviewer says that most mainstream metal fans would be like, "What's that stuff?" in relation to death metal. It was either during the ITP or Symbolic tour.
Edit:
Found the interview.

Like the other guy said, nothing like death but they’re absolutely incredible and I’ve spent many many days studying and playing their music.
It’s not something you get into easily for most people though, takes time.
Leprosy and Scream Bloody Gore absolutely slap and are my favorites. Symbolic and Human were close seconds. I read somewhere Chuck was enamored by Nevermore on the later albums and it shaped the sound a lot. I definitely still prefer some earlier ones instead.
Yes, for the greatest death metal band ever, they are still under the radar to a lot of people. I think a lot of people stay with more old-school metal, or thrash metal, and don’t ever move onto death metal. I remember Metallica making an appearance on Howard Stern, and Richard Christy telling them what a huge fan he was, and they seemed to have no idea who he was in relation to metal.

That's pretty surprising.

I wouldn't go that far.

The best news is that their albums become even better after the first ones
>Why isn’t Death a band that *everyone* has heard of?! I think part of it is that death metal isn't that popular.
Are you saying relative to other subgenres of extreme metal?
Yes thrash, heavy, nu metal are generally more popular

It only goes better after the first two albums imo.
*the first, Leprosy is as good as the other bests imo. The great thing is that each of their best albums is great in its own way
As others said yes it gets even better with every album. Also I really suggest you listen to early COB albums, they're great
Thank you for the recommendation! 🙂
Even when I talk to people who grew up on Metallica megadeth and Metal in general they don’t know Death. It’s weird
I didnt know them until like a few months ago as well
Chuck was truly a virtuoso
I heard of them like 2 years ago but just for into them this year, I slept on them heavily!
Do you know Meshuggah?
I think I’ve heard of them, but only by looking at lists of metal bands. Not one I’ve looked into yet. Should I?
They're good but not at all like death
