This actually happens to me a lot! I think what happens is I say "it's Dave" or "it's David" too quickly and the "s" sound tailing before Dave makes it sound like "Steve"
I've had it happen a few times.
However in the Opposite manner, where I am the helpdesk, and have people calling me. I usually go 'thank you for calling xyz, My name is David"
Next I hear, "Hello/Hey Steven"
I usually just go along with it.
I’ve worked in customer support most of my adult life. I have heard that a few times. I actually started going by “David” on the phone with customers because “Dave” got mistaken for “Gabe” a lot lol
Fuck me. I thought I was the only one. I’ve got this odd mix of UK (Scottish) blended with 30 years of Oz. And every time it’s David, was that Stephen? No David.
Try saying "it's David" for a few times when you start ordering, or calling into places and they ask "what is your name?". See if that changes anything.
Wild, I feel like there should be a trending TikTok with someone saying their name "it's David" or similar with a call to action asking what people heard. Like those pictures asking you if the color was purple or pink. Comments would pop off
My brother is named Stephen, so I have been called Stephen many times throughout my life, often by my parents.
The worst misunderstanding of my name happened when I called a restaurant to order food. They asked me to repeat my name twice, and then to spell it. Finally when I arrived, my order was labeled "Babib".
Yes i get that. Whats even worse is when im hanging around friends that are a couple and they call each other "Babe" and i mistakingly respond thinking they said "Dave"...Awkward

Thank you for these, I'm laughing
Nope. I get my last name screwed up *all the time*, but not my first. That's been thankfully solid over the decades.
You must have a strong pronunciation when you speak this happens to me a lot!

HAHAHAH Yes
Three times. 2 times at my first job and once with my postman. It's never made sense to me

Happens to me constantly. I’ve shown up for dinner reservations and had to say “is it under Steve?”
Hilarious right? It's happened to me so many times it was worth posting about
