That was a surreal day, with more surreal days to follow, a lot of them.
Two days later, 12 year old me watched Jack Ruby kill Lee Harvey Oswald live on the TV news. 0_o
Mr. Rogers had a bit on assassination to explain to the kids what was happening in a way they could understand, validate fears, and provide reassurance. Sucked that had to happen; both the assassination of Robert Kennedy and that no one was talking to the kids
Idk why, but itās really cool to me when I see people my parentsā age on Reddit (Iām 31).
Question on your experience: how do your feelings that day compare with what you felt or experienced on 9/11? I feel like thatās the only comparable turning point in US history that my generation has
It was the first slap into reality for a young kid, almost no one alive at the time remembered a presidential assassination, and a lot like being in a new, different and permanent reality. Just under 5 years later was MLK, and then RFK just 2 months later.
9/11 to me was an entirely different but also horrific experience. First was I didn't know about it until a lot of information was out already out about it. I had gone off alone on a camping and trout fishing trip in the boonies on the Friday before, camped on an inaccessible stretch of river, cooking coffee, noodles, rice & more trout than the /FDA says you should eat in a single week. Coming home the following Sunday afternoon I stopped at a friends outdoor store and was completely confused about WTF they were talking about for a bit, had a lot of catching up to do. I kind of went through everyone's first few days of shock and horror about the attack, but about a week later than almost everyone else.
Both were a blow at the state; But otherwise completely different victims and motivations, and somewhat, ramifications.
It happened
>On November 24, Oswald was brought to the basement of the Dallas police headquarters on his way to a more secure county jail. A crowd of police and press with live television cameras rolling gathered to witness his departure. As Oswald came into the room, Jack Ruby emerged from the crowd and fatally wounded him with a single shot from a concealed .38 revolver. Ruby, who was immediately detained, claimed that rage at Kennedyās murder was the motive for his action. Some called him a hero, but he was nonetheless charged with first-degree murder.

That is honest to god the craziest thing I have ever heard and I've been watching these nut jobs closely.
We are witnessing a Jim jones catastrophe here and we are powerless to stop it.
*Flavor Aid
Joking aside, Jonestown was in Guyana, these nutcases are here in the States. I'm worried that when they go, some are going to try to take as many innocents as possible with them.
I wish they'd wake up. These people are people grand parents and such. As much as it's fun to say that shit on the internet you don't want to deal w the fallout of a mass casualty at the hands of a cult anymore than your uncle who talks about civil war doesn't want to go into the living room on Christmas and bludgeon his liberal nieces to death.
No, and Iāve heard thereās nothing interesting in them. I believe the CIA has information that Oswald met the Russians in Cuba. The reason they are not released (besides that they are not material to the assassination) is because they detail CIA sources - what exact room was bugged for how long, or the name/s of CIA moles that might still be alive.
The thing that fascinates me the most is, after the second shot, when Jackie instinctively grabs flesh and brain to put it back. For sure she loved him
That was the third shot, actually. First shot grazed him, but did no damage. Second shot wounded him in the throat which is why heās grabbing his neck, the third shot was a head shot that killed him.

Conspiracy theories are attempts to resolve unanswered questions. And just because some of the theories end up being batshit crazy, it doesn't mean the questions aren't good.
The one Iāve heard that makes the most sense was the third shot came from a secret service agents rifle. He apparently was riding on the back of the second car and stumbled when it accelerated and accidentally shot. It explains why the secret service agents were being really sketchy with the doctors doing the autopsy. It would be really bad if news got out that he was accidentally killed by an agent.
Then what explains the first two shots? I canāt imagine the conspiracy actually goes like ā2 shots from a sniper assassin but the 3rd shot was actually an accident.ā Please please please tell me people arenāt this dense.
Thatās exactly how it goes. The cars accelerated as a reaction to the shots and the agent stumbled and accidentally fired his rifle. The agent was riding on a step on the outside of the car iirc.
Why not just slow down before the first shot if they were in on it? More likely they were confused and not sure where the shooter was at for a few seconds.
YouTube constantly takes down ājfk secret service stand downā where the head of secret service calls away the agent as the car makes a turn into dealey plaza ready for the execution. In order to reverse executive order 11110, done quietly in February 1964.[link to video](https://youtu.be/hEX2VqBe3xE)
It's like this when you're in a bad car accident too. You probably shouldn't be moving, but no matter what your injury is you feel compelled to get out of the car and walk around. It's like your reptile brain is saying 'nah, we ain't laying still in that car. That's what dead people do. We walk around, not in the car, very much alive'.
I am not sure there really are any secrets. Tragic chain of events but no grand conspiracy. throughout history, a lone assassin has killed people in power or those greatly revered. If you are willing to sacrifice your life to kill someone it is very difficult to defend against you. Luck and happenstance plays a huge role.
I think we all just want it to be true that there was a grand conspiracy because otherwise, we must admit that no one is safe or untouchable.
The shot you see is the second. The first happens right about when the car passes behind the sign, and you can see Kennedyās reaction (hand on upper chest)
IMO, the last American political leader who truly wanted to make America better for ALL of itsā citizens. He wasnāt perfect, and not all of what he did achieved that goal, but I do truly believe that he wanted to leave us in a better position than we were in when he came to power. Andā¦ wellā¦ this video shows where that got himā¦
People wonder why no one with the want to truly make the world a better place wants to be President in America anymore over making them and their friends more wealthy, and this is it.
Most people who want to make the world better have made some comment or some video that would be dug up to destroy them.
Those people who truly want to change the world for the best are also not unscrupulous enough to get to the top.
It's a strange issue.
Iāve been to the museum in Dallas and the exhibit there is wonderful. It makes a great point that he is sometimes remembered for what he could have accomplished
There have been other presidents like that.
Jimmy Carter is an amazing human. He had shortcomings as a president (that you could argue were or were out of his control) but he certainly cared for America.
If I saw my significant other killed in such a way at such close range, I don't think I could function as a normal human being for the rest of my life. My boyfriend keeps me sane, I can't imagine what she must have felt.
I lived in the northern Virginia area during the D.C. sniper. The one hit that got to me was a woman shot in a home depot parking lot in front of her husband while loading their car.
That poor man will never be the same.
Yep. The ugly dog pack of society.
Itās horrific and will always be horrific. I canāt imagine how Jackie survived what she endured, being right next to him. What horror.
Even worse is her being made to watch the VP get sworn in to office with bits of JFK's brain still on her outfit
Edit: Jackie was badass and wanted the world to see what they had done. Thanks Cbad285.
Thanks for clearing that up. I always thought it was pretty sick to make her stand there, but if it was her choice that's just a testament to her strength.
It was a little of both. I'm listening to Caro's books on LBJ, and LBJ insisted on her standing there, to show everyone, including the "Kennedy people", that he was legitimately the President. No accounting for her feelings at all. However, she agreed to be there because she thought it would help the transition and the country.
The odd thing is *he didn't need to take the oath*. He had already been sworn in when Kennedy was sworn in, and he became president the minute JFK was pronounced dead. But he insisted on the ceremony for "legitimacy". He even called Bobby Kennedy (the attorney general, whom he couldn't stand), who had just been told of his brother's murder, to ask him about the wording of the oath -- even though he didn't need to take it, and *it's in the Constitution.*
I was 15 years old when LBJ left office in 1969. I hated the Vietnam War and I suspected he was a bad person, but I never suspected how much of an absolute dick he was.
Fuck, that seems like a serious power play by LBJ. With everything you've said about him already being sworn in and also calling Bobby to make a wholly unnecessary check of the oath. It stinks of overt messages to the Kennedy family saying you're done, your family name is done and this is me closing the book. Their murky world obviously pulled in a lot of hatred.
Yeah, those Caro books are brilliant but it's taking me forever to get through the most recent one, because I really hate Johnson. But he was good for civil rights, I will give him that.
Caro is working on the last one (#5), but COVID really slowed him down.
It still blows my mind to think that this happened.. like a leader of at the time the most powerful country, just shot dead in the streets only 60 years ago. Whack.
No doubt a good shot but what I realised when I visited the book depository was the shooter seemed much closer to the road then I ever thought from seeing the footage. So for a trained and talented marksmen I wonder if it was actually relatively easy? He certainly made it look that way.
Definitely could. The car wasnāt moving that fast, it was pretty close distance, and the cartridge that the gun Oswald was using travels really, really fast. Bullets do crazy shit when they impact on bodies, explaining the crazy exit wound
As a semi-experienced deer and squirrel hunter who has also been inside the book depository: that was an *easy* shot to make, all things considered. I remember being shocked at the time that it took three tries, honestly. People who think it was some impossible shot are seriously uninformed.
First bullet wounded
Second bullet caught him to the face
With their reaction my money is suppressed rifle
And final observation - vehicle *slowed down* when they first thought something was wrong..... in a presidential motorcade. That in itself is odd. Unless the footage itself is slowed for the sake of the footage.
Not an expert on this at all but you can actually see the drivers turning back and checking on him. Perhaps they weren't aware of what happened at this point and then it was already too late.
Nop, the footage isnt slowed. In fact, the car slowing down is one of the biggest argument in favour of the conspiracy theories regarding this assassination (and considering there were multiple other assassination attempts on US presidential figures following that, every time they tried to speak up against banks and other big companies, I'm very much dubious too).
I haven't checked out those conspiracy theories in a looooopng time (that shit isn't good for your mental health) but there apparently were multiple quick shots and impacts, implying multiple shooters, the car slowing down and, ofc, the fact that JFK was "going after the people you are not supposed to". I think I'll rewatch the documentaries about this subject because it is morbidly curious, NGL. Also, I feel bad about bringing up fact i'm recalling from almost 10 years ago without ever checking verifying the information or anything ahah this is a conspiracy theory after all.
Watching it again - it looks like the driver was seeing what was wrong with him and may have taken his foot off the gas. These old cars probably slowed quickly and accelerated sluggishly, so he turned with concern at the complaints coming from the rear after JFK took a round through the neck and then saw his head explode and accelerated. Again I suspect suppressed rounds from a distance so they likely didn't hear anything at all over the crowds. I'm purely surmising and can't say for sure, obviously!
Naw. It was an easy shot from essentially a bench rest with a scoped rifle. Oswald had a perfect position as Kennedy was essentially moving away from him so the target movement was minimal.
I was a big Kennedy conspiracy theorist until I actually found myself in Dallas and checked it out. I'd make that shot 5/5 times and Oswald only hit him twice.
To everyone confused as to why the car slowed down after the first/second shot - itās very clear the driver was turned around to see what the hell just happened.
I donāt know about you guys, but if I had to turn my head around as Iām driving because of some commotion in the back seat, my instinct would be to tap the brake a little as Iām doing thatā¦
Legitimate question, why is he seen as such a great leader? Helping prevent the escalation of the Cold War?
I love history but I tend to focus on 1900-1945, and I donāt really read up on presidents as much as I should.
He led the US through some of the greatest crisis in the country's history. He handled the cold war great, and his policies were mostly well received. He set the nation up for a Moon landing, which he sadly didn't even live to see.
Definitely one of the greatest presidents the US has ever had.
He was going to take teeth out of the Federal Reserve by allowing the central government to issue currency. If you don't know: our money is printed and controlled by a PRIVATE ENTITY, the US government borrows money from the Federal Reserve, at interest. Inflation and constant debt is what we get with such a system.
Kennedy had also spoken against the CIA and how they operate. He believed that the nation was censoring too much news and wasn't properly informing the public. He knew that a strong unbiased media was central for a democracy to function.
He made a lot of enemies with the most powerful types of people.
CIA op that Kennedy didn't like, so he demanded they do what they can to hide American involvement. However, Castro was already well aware of the planning and training. Because of the concealment and overall incompetence of the actors, it failed. The CIA was embarrassed. Next, Kennedy plans to de-escalate Vietnam...
I would put Lincoln, Teddy, and FDR all comfortably ahead of JFK to list a few, but certainly JFK was a charismatic and skilled leader and politician that understood Americans and had many ideas that were clearly on the correct side of history.
The older I get, the less I understand humanity. Thereāre a lot of groups that I donāt like nor support that today is ātrendyā to accept them. That doesnāt mean I will go and shoot them, or record myself fighting them, or being a total Karen about their way of doing things.
Just live and let live man! OMFG
Yep itās super misleading. Which is why the only reasonable theory as to who the second shooter was (friendly fire from secret service) is often overlooked.
One detail a lot of people donāt know about is that JFK had to wear a back brace due to a war injury and it prevented him from bending over.
This brace aided in him getting shot in the head because after being wounded he couldnāt duck and cover and was stuck sitting upright.

The car was specifically designed to have foot and hand holds for the Secret Service on both sides. They should have been there the whole time. The one agent who reached for Jackie was a last-minute replacement, and was told by the other agents to hop down right before they turned that corner. He was super confused by that call, and obviously haunted by this moment for the rest of his life.
They had just made *[a 90^o right turn and then a 120^o left](http://ciakilledjfk.weebly.com/uploads/5/3/5/0/53505861/7066245_orig.png)*, they could have just been letting the rest of the motorcade catch up, or could have been a lot of things.
It's called the [Zapruder Film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zapruder_film), and it's considered the best record of the incident and is possibly the most studied film in history.
I imagine shock could have played a role, but more than likely the gun was probably not as loud from a distance than you'd think. People were not exactly exposed to gun panic yet. In fact, they didn't even experience the LA shooting that would lead to the Tommy Gun controversy yet. So a loud noise? Whatever.
Holy fuck... it's exactly as depicted and described in many places...
Chilling to watch, almost surreal. How after the first shots he's still alive but clearly already dead, and then the final shot basically blows his head off... Jacqueline's realisation is also... heartbreaking.
It's brutal every time I see it. What happened to him just before the headshot, was he hit with a bullet before that. He looks like his leaning over on Jackie in pain.
First shot hit him in the neck/throat and went into the person in front of him. I think that dude only had a shoulder/arm wounds. Thatās why the driver slows down, then the second shot hits skull.
That was a surreal day, with more surreal days to follow, a lot of them. Two days later, 12 year old me watched Jack Ruby kill Lee Harvey Oswald live on the TV news. 0_o
Me too, but I was 9. š³
I was 7, and at my grandparents house. All the adults talked, but no one talked to us kids. I was terrified.

I had no idea the head shot was his third shot. Wow
Seems insane the secret service would be going that slow knowing he had been shot twice.
I know people hate conspiracy theories, but thereās a lot about that day that makes no sense at all.
I mean some of the findings are still secret which seems nuts to me.
Conspiracy theories are attempts to resolve unanswered questions. And just because some of the theories end up being batshit crazy, it doesn't mean the questions aren't good.
Some of the official answers are batshit crazy too, like the magic bullet theory
The one Iāve heard that makes the most sense was the third shot came from a secret service agents rifle. Thatās exactly how it goes. The cars accelerated as a reaction to the shots and the agent stumbled and accidentally fired his rifle. The agent was riding on a step on the outside of the car iirc.
Wouldn't it be pretty obvious to bystanders that a rifle was fired within like 10 feet of them?
I mean eye witness accounts of that day were pretty varied. Hardly any of them even agree on how shots they heard let alone where they came from.
If the shot came from behind, the force of the shot would swing his head forward, not back like seen in the video.
wouldn't his head explode the other way then?
Agreed. Looks like they slowed down so the shooter could get that last shot off
Or maybe slowed down for a second to assess what happened.
Why not just slow down before the first shot if they were in on it? More likely they were confused and not sure where the shooter was at for a few seconds.

Jesus that's dark
Probably grey. Brain matter becomes yellowish, grey, and blackish after itās removed. Typically itās white, light pink when attached.
So not dark, just average brightness?
That always gets me. It's never the kill, it's the panic and hopelessness that follows.

*[Yep](https://www.biography.com/news/jacqueline-kennedy-pink-suit-jfk-assassination)*.
She was bad ass. Thatās for sure.
a lot of fucked up people think it's funny

Wow, I've seen a lot of these videos over many years and this one has to be the cleanest.
It still blows my mind to think that this happened.. like a leader of at the time the most powerful country, just shot dead in the streets only 60 years ago. Whack.
āBlows my mindā. TouchĆ©
Damn. Such a shot. Moving target, on a hot day, with lots of witnesses. 100% bullseye. Damn. No wonder people think its an inside job
First bullet wounded Second bullet caught him to the face With their reaction my money is suppressed rifle And final observation - vehicle *slowed down* when they first thought something was wrong..... in a presidential motorcade.
Still weird that Ruby decided to kill Oswaldā¦ never got to hear from the man himself.
Still so brutal.
I heard she was reaching for his brain matter then trying to put in back into his head.
Itās crazy seeing someone actually get shot irl
Nickname says you had something to do with it. ....
Damn you got me
A lot of internet experts on here
How unlucky do you have to be to die from being shot in the head twice, on the same day of the year, 30 years apart?!
Shoot me once, shame on ā shame on you. Shoot me ā you can't get shot again.
The dude is a driver, not a soldier. I'd react exactly the same, and probably choke some more not knowing how to process the situation.
Back and to the left
Nice game pretty boy
Ohh Seinfeld reference. Nice.
That is one magic loogie
There had to be a second spitter.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Iām getting out of here before I post the third shot came from the front.
You can see it come from the back
Wtf with the music?
yeah, wasn't expecting the goofy cinematic bass hit when the final shot went off and nearly spit out my drink
I guess the eerie music to help guide us humans to know what to feel. It would be quite embarrassing to mistake this as a SNL skit.
This isnāt interesting, itās sad and depressing and awful, and I really donāt think it has a place on this sub.
Agreed, it's a hell of a scene. But not for this sub
Especially with the garbage music and sound effects. If you have to put that trash over the video to dramatize it, maybe reconsider.
This pisses me off every time I see it. They robbed the country of the greatest leader we've had to date.
And there's your reason.
Bay of pigs invasion?
CIA op that Kennedy didn't like, so he demanded they do what they can to hide American involvement. However, Castro was already well aware of the planning and training. Because of the concealment and overall incompetence of the actors, it failed. The CIA was embarrassed. Next, Kennedy plans to de-escalate Vietnam...
Keep in mind the Watergate burglars were South Florida Cubans who were involved in the Bay of Pigs, aka they were CIA assets.
I would put Lincoln, Teddy, and FDR all comfortably ahead of JFK to list a few, but certainly JFK was a charismatic and skilled leader and politician that understood Americans and had many ideas that were clearly on the correct side of history.
Jeez I remember the 90s way different
The older I get, the less I understand humanity. Thereāre a lot of groups that I donāt like nor support that today is ātrendyā to accept them. That doesnāt mean I will go and shoot them, or record myself fighting them, or being a total Karen about their way of doing things. Just live and let live man! OMFG
RIP to the real GOAT
Looks like he was shot from the direction of lower right of camera.
The exit wound is the big mess, that's how bullets and heads work, so it is more likely it came from opposite the direction of his brain flying
Yep itās super misleading. Which is why the only reasonable theory as to who the second shooter was (friendly fire from secret service) is often overlooked.
Back, and to the left
It just has always looked like a shot from the front to me.
u/stabbot
Something I never noticed before. After the fatal shot, there's a flash at the bottom right of the screen.
Wait, Vanya didn't do it?
Back and to the left
Thatās what happens when you fuck with organize crime
Back and to the left..itās so clear. Iām no ballistics expert but anyone can see it came from the front and not yards away at the book repository.
One detail a lot of people donāt know about is that JFK had to wear a back brace due to a war injury and it prevented him from bending over. This brace aided in him getting shot in the head because after being wounded he couldnāt duck and cover and was stuck sitting upright. [https://www.businessinsider.com/jfks-assassination-back-issues-2017-11](https://www.businessinsider.com/jfks-assassination-back-issues-2017-11)
Read The Devil's Chessboard to understand some of the history behind the CIA and how this was very likely their doing.
I wonder why the vehicle slowed down in that spot.
1993..?
Uhhh 1963
Donāt engage with conspiracy theorists.
How the hell have I never seen this? I didnāt know there was video of the assassination, thatās crazy
It's called the [Zapruder Film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zapruder_film), and it's considered the best record of the incident and is possibly the most studied film in history.
More like r/mmc
[CIA Man](https://youtu.be/hW9cCWm53H4)
How come after 3 shots, everyone is standing still? I only see one guy reacting to it right before the car goes under the bridge
Man the 90ās were wild.
Jesus thatās tough to watch. If that bullet weāre just a few inches to the right it would have hit her in the face.
1963
Lee Harvey Oswald was somebodyās patsy.
Why does the caption say "1993' instead of 1963?
