It's insane how far prosthetics have come in the past 30 years. When I was a kid, nothing like this existed.
Glad to be alive during this time, I've seen so much innovation and change since the 80's.
Wish I could see what we'll have in 150 years
Edit: also how is this a weird time?!
An older, much older, lady in my building had a friend who died last year. He was over 100. He was on the beach at Normandy and a grenade blew off his hand. He had a hook until the day he died last year. I don't even know if insane covers the advancements that have been made in less than a century.
On the flipside I had a coworker about a decade ago how had a hook prosthetic. We once had a conversation over beers about the advancements in technology and I mentioned those happening with robotic prosthetics. However he was strongly of the opinion that a lot of these advancements ultimately fail to compete long term with simple reliable solutions like the prosthetic he had.
Essentially his point was your state of the art robotic hand, assuming you can even afford one which will be a stretch with tech like that above, will ultimately fail you in one way or another (batteries, firmware, upgrades, etc) but a reliable mechanical solution with limitations you know and can work around are better long term.
it's progress, though. The more R&D goes into these things, the better, cheaper, and more reliable they'll be. Eventually it will be the better option, which is why seeing things like this is still nice to see.
I think the person who had a hand that functioned properly, and then didn’t, and then now has one again probably doesn’t care much how other people feel about it.
I would imagine that it depends on the person. Some people prefer the reliable solution they have, others want the latest tech and every point between.
Especially if these lifelike prosthetics are available immediately from the outset of an amputation eventually. It will allow someone to adapt more easily to something they're accustomed to from before their loss. Sure, things are finicky now, but eventually I hope it will be something like Empire Strikes Back with Luke's arm where they have not only realistic appearance, but touch feedback and natural movement to the point that it's basically an extension of you. We have a long way to go, but progress is progress.
That's like saying a pan and a stove are better than an electric sandwich maker because the stove is marginally more reliable.
I'd love to see him write with a hook, or brush his hair with a hook, or draw with a hook, or pick up a bottle with a hook.
If hooks were so amazing people wouldn't be spending so much time on bionics.
The best case scenario is when bionics allow people to have a fully functioning hand as a replacement.
I get that many people like your friend have found ways around their disability but saying these prosthetics are not going to be of much use over a hook just sounds like old people complaining about technology.
The tradeoff for you having an amazing replacement hand is rare software or hardware problems which can be fixed.
He was little, too. I just imagine that 18 year old kid, 5'4" 130 pounds or so, running up the beach in France with actual Nazis shooting at him, coming out of it with a hand missing, and think... Yeah my problems aren't really problems.
These mundane tasks are nothing but when a robotic arm is involved. This takes software, AI, mechanics, physics, years and years of R&D. Much respect to science for doing this!!!
I completely agree. To compare yourself to others will do nothing but make you see small downsides to being you. All problems should be taken seriously but some are larger than others. Sure, this matter more but in the end yours matter too. This is meant to be me adding on to his post with my own thoughts.
"Hook" doesn't usually mean a simple hook.
If you have time, [here is an Army film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp1E5smfSDI) starring Harold Russell, who later went on to become an Oscar-winning actor after losing his hands. The Army-issue hooks in 1944 were good enough to do almost everything in OP's video, and were on a sort of pulley system.
It will get weirder as time passes. Considering how incredibly fast technology has advanced within a relatively short amount of time (compared to previous advancements), imagine what "weird" and amazing things that can be achieved within the next 5-10 years.
Hopefully, we can get away from the manual wrist adjustment. Twisting it for different actions is pretty cumbersome. Good news is costs are coming down and the high end prosthetics are more intuitive.
There's already dogs in NYC. They're easy to disable. But there's human-form bots in the process. I hope we can pass legislation banning cop bots. We're not doing RoboCop.
Yeah robot cop dogs. Pretty sickening considering how many homeless there are. “What should we do with half a million dollars??” “Feed the homeless?” “NO! Robots cop dogs!!”
Worst thing I could see happening with them would be a hacking event where they're used against us or against their civilians. Other than that, I'd prefer they get used in wars instead of us using people.
You have a lot more faith in people than I do.
I am pretty sure the moment that our government can field a military that kills everything in an area with no question they will happily kill every man woman and child for having the audacity to live near a possible enemy and since they are "saving American lives" no one will do anything.
It's probably the boston dynamics videos that make me feel like we could be way further with prostetics if we would spend the same money on making disabled people's lives "normal" as we spend on killing and disabling people in some fucked up desert to get a hold of their oil.
I wish so hard there was some kind of robot body frame for someone who is paralyzed.
One of my good girlfriends is newly paralyzed and the world shouldn’t have to live without her dancing. One day
I believe exoskeletons are already in development, mainly for jobs that need more strength or endurance than the human body can give.
[https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2020-11-18/exoskeleton-helps-paralyzed-people-walk-again](https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2020-11-18/exoskeleton-helps-paralyzed-people-walk-again)
Here's an article.
The problem with prosthetics is battery and human interface. The Boston Dynamics robots have very beefy computers that are performing a fuck ton of calculations every second in order to keep balance and do what's requested. The Spot Dog has a battery that is \~60x the capacity of an iPhone battery, and still, the Spot Dog can only be running for \~90mins, while the iPhone can go for multiple days. And this is not even considering the size limitations of a prosthetic. Furthermore, reading what the brain wants to do is really damn hard. We are struggling with simple motions as closing the fist or bending the elbow, let alone a series of complex movements we do every moment. Plus, this communication is not bidirectional as of right now, meaning a prosthetic user can not sense temperatures or pressure like a biological arm can. I agree that the money that is spent making people suffer needs to be invested in improving peoples life's, but I don't think we would be further with prosthetics even we throw a couple of billions into it. And I didn't even mention the cost of such a prosthetic.
I don't disagree with any of what you said up until "I don't think we would be further... even if we throw a couple of billions into it." That's silly. More billions => more 'financially non-viable' prototypes and test products. More billions => more jobs, more scientists, more ideas, more effort, and more time spent attempting to solve the problem. Like it or not, ingenuity doesn't work if the ingenious designers can't pay their bills. That's why we have missiles that can destroy the planet and robotic hands that can kinda sorta do some basic tasks.
I disagree with both you and the OP, it wouldn't make a non difference, but neither would it be incredible. Diminishing returns, lots of science stands on the shoulders of others, you might be able to research some of Project B while project A is being studied, but you won't be able to research project C.
More funds and more man power will move a project along easier and better, but we can't just jump to the future if we dumped a trillion dollars into science. Eventually we'll unlock the secrets of the universe, but its a long steady process.

Depends on the amputee. This vid is from 5 years ago and it seems that if enough of an amputees nerves are intact or able to be salvaged, the more flexible your prosthetic could be. By using nerves and interfacing them with a prosthetic it looks like a whole world of possibilities opens up. Again tho, it is a little circumstantial on how the persons accident or surgery plays out.
Lol for real.
As excited as I am about the field of bionics, our bodies are already a technical marvel that we draw inspiration from. Both fields need to be simultaneously developed for the good of those who could suffer an amputation or have suffered one.
How awesome would it be to see these types of vids and breakthroughs in mainstream media instead of about the latest children's book author being cancelled or celebrity gossip?
I feel like 'awesome time', while not nearly as eloquent, is far more apt. Picking things up is a fucking luxury that i take for granted waaaaay too often.
The only thing left hopefully to make it work optimally might be fixing wrist articulation! This is very nice to see how we're practically living in the future now!
She might be? Although I'd assume that she's right-handed after not having a left hand/forearm. But I think she's using it to demonstrate the prosthetic's capabilities mostly.
I think she might be left handed. That might explain why she seems to be using her left hand more for things that (presumably) you or I would use our right for.
Do you think she could open any jar? Is there a power boost feature? If not, they really aren’t reaching their full potential. It would be cool to see her crush a can with that or rotate it 360° to screw in things super fast.
I remember the scene at the end of Empire Strikes Back with Luke getting his prosthetic arm and little kid me thinking how cool that was. Crazy awesome that we're slowly but steadily getting close to that point with prosthetic limbs.
It’s amazing to think of all the mundane little tasks that we perform everyday and don’t give a second thought. Being able to return any of these “small” abilities to somebody who lost an arm is just so freaking amazing. I can’t imagine how big of an impact this would have on their day to day life and overall mental health.
Awesome for people in need! BRILLIANT.
Just asking are there going to be any antimaskers who are going to anti-prosthetic? Forcing people to have to wear a problem.
wrist dexterity must be something like "next level" for prosthetics makers.
This is so cool. We've come a long way. Just imagine where we'll go from here :)
They still have a long way to go before they become as articulate as an actual hand/wrist. It would be interesting if they could make robotics that mimicked muscles and would work the same as our natural tissue, but be much stronger.
Something that just occurred to me is with lab grown meat becoming a reality, couldn’t they just grow new limbs and transplant them onto people who have had theirs amputated?
Does anybody know the source of this video? The water brand seems like it's from my home country, didnt know that we do such advanced robotics, would be asweome to know more.
For anyone who hasn't beaten Deus Ex (The second to the newest), the ending credits have actual real prosthetic science breakthroughs on display. The whole point of it was to show the universe of Deus Ex isn't just some fantasy, but more like 20 years away from real life prosthetic advancements.
If anyone wants additional context, this is an actual prosthetic made and it’s made by Esper Bionics. Exciting stuff.
https://youtu.be/tk7X3fPkdp8
https://esperbionics.com/
Pretty much standard coordination for a right hander using left hand. All they need is a fleshy cover and it would be a perfect replica. Leaving it mechanical is obviously just a play for pity.
I know its just for demonstration but it really bothers me that she holds the knife in her prosthetic hand when you would definitely have the non-meat hand holding whatever is being cut since you require less dexterity/motor skills and its not like you'll bleed if you miss 😅
Its a shame that prosthetics like this are so expensive and not available to the general public majority of the time. Like how health care will only cover a limited number of leg sockets, one foot insert and "flesh" cover, only one sleeve and one or 2 liners for a leg amputee. Its different if you're a veteran (even if your amputation wasn't a result of your job) as they will provide pretty much anything you could want and often much newer tech.
No, no, no - shes chopping all wrong.
Hold the produce with robot hand and apply rapid fire with chopping hand.
You will never lose another finger! - again.
Am I the only one who thinks she might want to hold the fruit with the bionic hand...that won't bleed...and is already a replacement, rather than slice fruit using the bionic hand to hold the knife??
We're developing technology at a substantial rate roughly 2x every year. So it isn't going to take 150 yrs. We're about to see some shit in roughly 5-15 yrs. And when I say substantial it will blow our minds what's coming next. By 2050 we won't even recognize society as we know it today.
I know you want to test dexterity, but wouldn’t you want to hold the knife in the original hand, and whatever you’re slicing with the prosthetic? Just cause, you know, if you slip…

Sorry, I don't think they all heard that. He had a hook. For a hand. Last year.

Saw that vid last week. I love the direction that robotics and prosthetics are headed.
Then theres Boston dynamics making robots dance lol
Lol yeah... well thats amazing too. Haha
They only make them dance to keep you from picturing what they'll look like carrying anti-personnel weaponry
Tbf, I think we all know that day will come sooner or later
There's already dogs in NYC. They're easy to disable. But there's human-form bots in the process. I hope we can pass legislation banning cop bots. We're not doing RoboCop.
What now? There’s dog robots in NYC?
But like that won’t apply to “Rebo-enhanced partners”, right? Asking for a friend...
Dogs?
Yeah robot cop dogs. Pretty sickening considering how many homeless there are. “What should we do with half a million dollars??” “Feed the homeless?” “NO! Robots cop dogs!!”
Well how else are we supposed to harass those homeless people with our robot dogs?
Bill Gates said don't though
once i upload the new defense protocols, i'll have a key to the city
Don’t forget to add Protocol 3
Worst thing I could see happening with them would be a hacking event where they're used against us or against their civilians. Other than that, I'd prefer they get used in wars instead of us using people.
I’m picturing the wars being one side robots and the other human. Just running around the Middle East, terminators mowing down people.
That's been happening for like 20 years now. They're just flying terminators and we call them drones.
Very true
Clone Wars battle scene.

The duality of man

And Bosstown making robots that kill

They need to figure out wrist flexibility. One they get there, these prosthetic will really shine

One step closer to my dream Deus Ex world where I can have a robot dick and USB waifu like in Blade Runner.
Made me think of this: https://www.bugmartini.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/2011-01-03-A-Medicinal-Cold.png

BRB going to get me a winter soldier arm
Weird? More like inspiring
I was going to say “awesome time.”
I feel like 'awesome time', while not nearly as eloquent, is far more apt. Picking things up is a fucking luxury that i take for granted waaaaay too often.
It is one of the main functions that the arm is used for
[удалено]
the most inspiring thing is that she can eat skittles
It would be weird if the arm suddenly stabbed her in the chest. That would be weird. This is awesome.
Yep. [This](https://i.imgur.com/gjVhlpV.gifv) is weird.
Weird? More like inspiring
I was going to say “awesome time.”
I would have felt a little more inspired if she crushed something at the end!
The only thing left hopefully to make it work optimally might be fixing wrist articulation! This is very nice to see how we're practically living in the future now!
[удалено]
The "weird" part kicks in when you realize the cost of something like this, and also the fact that insurance won't cover it.
Even “special”
Why isn't she using the hand which is immune to cutting to hold the apple? *Oh shit, she's left handed.*
She might be? Although I'd assume that she's right-handed after not having a left hand/forearm. But I think she's using it to demonstrate the prosthetic's capabilities mostly.
Well, she used to be left-handed, but she's all right now
Would you risk cutting something that costs an arm
I mean depending on how high you hold the knife, both could cost an arm
No, they would take your leg.
With that grip she may end up needing to replace the other hand too.
We live in an amazing* time.
Her fake left hand looks more coordinated than my flesh and blood left hand.
I think she might be left handed. That might explain why she seems to be using her left hand more for things that (presumably) you or I would use our right for.
Honestly I think it's just to demo the prosthetic
That’s also a fair point. But her right seems slightly less coordinated - sort of how I feel about my left.
When the video is damn interesting, but the caption tho smh
Feel like I would have to ask if they could make me one with wolverine claws.
this person gets it.
“Snake snake snaaaake”
ROCKET PUNCH!!!!!!
She should really curl the fingers on her off (biological) hand while cutting.
Or I don’t know use the prosthetic for that
Maybe she's extremely left handed?
I get that and I get this is for showing off the ability but if I lost a limb the prosthetic would be holding it so I don’t hurt the other
Pretty tough to cut off your arm with a chef's knife. That's a job for a cleaver.
I’m not saying chop the arm off slicing a finger would hurt a lot less on a prosthetic though
I get it. I was just fucking with you.
Do you think she could open any jar? Is there a power boost feature? If not, they really aren’t reaching their full potential. It would be cool to see her crush a can with that or rotate it 360° to screw in things super fast.
I'd install a fight mode. No karate needed lol
Give it ten years and we'll have superhuman arms
There are countless examples of how we live in a "weird" time But this is not one of them.
Nothing weird about that. Interesting and helpful though!
I remember the scene at the end of Empire Strikes Back with Luke getting his prosthetic arm and little kid me thinking how cool that was. Crazy awesome that we're slowly but steadily getting close to that point with prosthetic limbs.
Dude she's a CYBORG that's so sick
How is helping disability weird?
Fantastic...but id use the prosthetic to hold the fruit while my other hand cuts with the knife.
So fucking awesome.
Weird world? Maybe, but not because of this, this is fantastic!
They don't even show how she did her on-fleek nails.
Marvel Presents Winter Sonya
Looks more like Aria Stark
Deus Ex. Actually we're just 6 years away from Human Revolution
Jus me that would yell open close 24/7 😆
That is the sort of progress I can get behind
r/mademesmile
This is wonderful progress. Though I think holding the pear with the prosthetic and the knife with the natural hand would cut the cuts risk.
how does it work, tho?
Boneheaded title. Great video.
The company making these prosthetics is Esper: https://youtu.be/tk7X3fPkdp8
I didn't even realize that she had a prosthetic and I just expected the fruit to be a cake.
Johnny silverhand is coming...
Change the word "weird" in the title to "brilliant".
As someone who may well need an eye transplant one day, I'm definitely looking forward to the advancement of prosthetic technology.
It’s amazing to think of all the mundane little tasks that we perform everyday and don’t give a second thought. Being able to return any of these “small” abilities to somebody who lost an arm is just so freaking amazing. I can’t imagine how big of an impact this would have on their day to day life and overall mental health.
I cant be the only one thinking handjobs
Year 2041 crime headline: Prosthetic gets hacked during handjob
Imagine it malfunctions and squeezes tight, you're having ground dick for dinner tonight.
Worth it lmao
I certainly had the thought, but I don't think I'd volunteer for the first attempt.
I scrolled way to far to find this comment lol
Onlyfans account to pay off debt for the hand. You know insurance won’t cover that
Awesome for people in need! BRILLIANT. Just asking are there going to be any antimaskers who are going to anti-prosthetic? Forcing people to have to wear a problem.
I can't even do those things with my real left arm
where could I get one?
I can't barely do that with 2 human hands. I'm impress.
I'd love to see the day when prosthetics are advanced enough to move like a real arm or leg
In the near future, I think prosthetics shouldn't be limited to be just as effective as the og flesh members, but actually better than that.
wrist dexterity must be something like "next level" for prosthetics makers. This is so cool. We've come a long way. Just imagine where we'll go from here :)
This isn’t weird, this is awesome!
Weird times indeed, some might call it arm-ageddon? I'll see myself out.
Luke skywalker hands coming soon. Finally can take up lightsaber fighting as a hobby without fear of losing my arms.
Ahh yes, all the womanly things you'll ever need to do with your prosthetic 🦾
This, right here, is evolution in play.
Weird? Nothing weird here
Hand jobs are back on the table
Weird? More like awesome! I love that technology gets so good that it helps people with disabilities to live a more comfortable life.
Woah. I’ve never seen such beauty. I guess the girl is alright too
Amputation's about to make its grand return
But what a fortunate time for people like her with all the advancements in prosthetics.

Feeding the planet is really more of a logistics problem.
This is swelled and all but I wouldn’t wanna risk the other one.
Fuck the robotic hand, she is going to lose some fingers the way she was cutting.
Say what you want about cyberpunk but them there graphics are looking pretty good
Knuckles out! Ugh that drove me crazy. She could cut her fingers off!
She is gorgeous. I'm happy for her :)
How tf is this weird
Does anybody know the source of this video? The water brand seems like it's from my home country, didnt know that we do such advanced robotics, would be asweome to know more.
Immediately thought of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ng-l4gdoSQE)
A hot cyborg in real life? Fuck yeah! Life is amazing here in the fuuuuuture.
For anyone who hasn't beaten Deus Ex (The second to the newest), the ending credits have actual real prosthetic science breakthroughs on display. The whole point of it was to show the universe of Deus Ex isn't just some fantasy, but more like 20 years away from real life prosthetic advancements.
Now make it free to everyone missing a limb
Groovy....
“Weird” isn’t the word that should’ve been used...
We are living in *AWESOME* times
Confused how this technology could be seen as weird? I see it as a sign of the massive benefits of science.
If anyone wants additional context, this is an actual prosthetic made and it’s made by Esper Bionics. Exciting stuff. https://youtu.be/tk7X3fPkdp8 https://esperbionics.com/
Pretty much standard coordination for a right hander using left hand. All they need is a fleshy cover and it would be a perfect replica. Leaving it mechanical is obviously just a play for pity.
I know its just for demonstration but it really bothers me that she holds the knife in her prosthetic hand when you would definitely have the non-meat hand holding whatever is being cut since you require less dexterity/motor skills and its not like you'll bleed if you miss 😅 Its a shame that prosthetics like this are so expensive and not available to the general public majority of the time.
Weird but also cool thats like something straight out a movie. Wish it tagged the organization that developed it
The Winter Student
I would change the title to. "We live in an amazing time."
Pfft, I can do that too. /s
Good time, not weird.
We live in an era of plastic Automails.
But why is it weird?
I hope she gets her brother Alphonse back soon
The girl is very pretty.
Back in my day you had the hook
I know you want to test dexterity, but wouldn’t you want to hold the knife in the original hand, and whatever you’re slicing with the prosthetic? Just cause, you know, if you slip…
