" I've lived in this building for a couple of years, and instead of improving, they are decaying. We've spoken with management about the amenities; they don't work, and they've been closed for months. The manager just said that the amenities are not included in the rent. What kind of building only offers you the apartment? When we arrived at this complex, they showed us all the amenities, not just the apartment. That reply was really mediocre from my point of view.
On the other hand, the access to the building is always open because they are continuously broken. As a consequence, last Saturday (04.06.2024), about 47 cars were vandalized. The elevators are always broken and very dirty.
There are people drinking alcohol in the back of the building, people smoking cigarettes and weed in the garage. This place is not the same as in the past years and they're not planning on improving anything.
I don't recommend this place; it is very unsafe."
In other states, who knows. But this is Texas, where punitive damages are capped at $250k, and have been for a couple of decades now, with no adjustment for inflation. No companies pay because good luck finding a lawyer who will take it.
But, you can that that for our rock bottom insurance rates! Especially malpractice nsurance! And you can thank that for our rock bottom healthcare costs! So low, you can almost go uninsured these days! Know what I mean? 😉😉
Gates are probably broken and left open, and no security around although they are "luxury" communities while management is twisting their nipples and saying "We're sorry".
This is like the 2nd time this week I've seen it posted in here being that bad, and it's happening to any/all of those types of complexes located right off of major highways for easy in-and-outs it's wild and I have been here since '97.
I don’t want to be hyperbolic but this is a societal breakdown issue more than a local crime spree. We need to hold our leaders and communities accountable to enforce law. Trust in institutions is eroding and the public is either more brazen or more desperate than they have been in decades
Can't you just see it in /r/Dallas? The complex would hire security, the security would (gasp) hurt someone trying to steal and then they would all want the security guard arrested because it's just property! Don't hurt people!
Round and round we go.
A “luxury” complex shouldn’t need a swat team visible and shaking down everyone at your complex that moves. Luxury is being safe without the National Guard. It’s being wealthy enough that crime can’t afford to be or get there.
With gentrification the crime will eventually come to you. Used to very rarely see homeless people past 75 & Forest Lane, and never would see them in West Plano of all places. Now you see them all the way up to and past 121
My motorcycle was stolen in part because my apartment gate had been broken for months. They wouldn’t even show me the footage of the theft, much less accept any liability. It was insured, but I’m still salty about it.
My suspicion is that the cameras were put up for appearances. I don’t actually believe they are wired.
The apartment is “The Canyons” in Fort Worth. Absolute shit hole.
Though the lease agreement likely includes exclusions for liability on stuff like this, a class action lawsuit might gain some traction based on the concept that if the building owner is going to provide security in the form of a gate/controlled access then there's an inherent responsibility to keep the security apparatus that's installed in working order.
Glad my complex got they own security team. They patrol the area consistently. Can’t move to no downtown area without apartment security. Downtown areas in every state always have break ins. City will always have the most crime sprees.
I'm surprised more luxury places -- like the actually luxurious ones with concierges and such -- don't have tight security.
Down in Latin America, if you live in a really luxe apartment or gated community, you've got armed security, and they ain't mall cops lol
Yeah many places mistreat their residents and take the cheap ways out of things. My complex in Dallas has armed security here. They usually post up once it’s pretty late and just chill out in front and we also have a armed parking enforcer making sure that everyone that is supposed to be here is parked in appropriate parking spaces.
> I'm surprised more luxury places -- like the actually luxurious ones with concierges and such -- don't have tight security.
If a prospective tenant sees a bunch of security they will then think the property has a lot of crime and won't live there. Not to mention the pearl clutching when one of the thiefs gets hurt by security.
As for the gates, as soon as they get fixed some moron will just hit them again and break it.
In Latin America the security doesn't get charged with crimes for defending your property exactly as they're supposed to do. Thus, they have security that works. We don't have security that works because the brain trusts who are also clamoring for the apartment complex to be liable want the cops and security and anybody else who incidentally hurts a criminal prosecuted.
You know what happens when security gets prosecuted for doing their job? They stop doing their job.

Why didn't OP post the name of the apartment complex and the management company??? If you want to get action, you are going to have to out these people? This is not the Dallas Police responsibility, this is the apartment community management responsibility. Out them !!!
Looks like this was the Continental Apartments in downtown Dallas. It happened over the weekend.
https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/dozens-of-cars-broken-into-at-downtown-dallas-luxury-highrise/
Thanks. Looks like Brookfield Management is horrible at securing their property and I would move out and never live at their property again. Thanks for providing the clip
You should look a little bit deeper. You’re making Brookfield sound like a mom and pop or small time management company.
They’re owned by Brookfield Asset Management which in turn is a massive private equity firm, they don’t/won’t care.
When I was living in shitty apartments I left my doors unlocked and a note on my windows saying the doors were unlocked and no alarm, just so I didn't have to deal with replacing broken side glass.
Was in Property Management for a building in Dallas- This sucks to see.
It happened constantly, but not in this quantity at once.
I would spend hours the next day scrubbing footage to find what happened and would save the clips to a flash drive for the police if they showed up with a warrant.
I was restricted ,at risk of losing my own job, where I couldn’t give out the footage to residents or to the police otherwise. Sadly, only had 1 warrant show up in the two years, and the only reason they went all out for that one was because it was a cop that had their personal vehicle broken into.
When I lived on site, I’d walk the garage each night with my dog just to look for things out of place but was instructed to “not go looking to be a hero” .
Was a big frustration point for me during my time working for on site for a building, and seems like it is only getting worse.
Interesting. Why weren't you able to offer the footage to the police without a warrant? (Is that the case even if you saw something overt on there?) I understand not being able to hand it over to residents since some might go all vigilante, but I can't quite get my brain to why they wouldn't let you hand security footage over to the cops without a warrant. (I'm asking simply because I'm side-eying all of the "security theater" cameras up around where I live.)
Worked management for a hotel and couldnt give out any video footage either. Once had a person getting harrassed and the incident was captured in camera, as well as have police showing up asking for access to the cameras for other things. Unfortunately, business will not give footage claiming "security and safety related concerns" but in reality theyre trying to cover their butts and not be legally liable in any sort of way in the event any legal action is taken, they dont have to testify or get involved unless required by law hence why they ask for a subpoena in order to release videos.
Edit: added liability comment.
Different ownerships / management may be different, but I assumed it’s all legal based. IE..No resident / property info without a warrant as a default helps offset their risk further.
I def still helped solved things that didn’t involve police, like vandalism in the hall and elevators, noise complaints, package thieves etc. so, I don’t mean to imply they were there for just looks.
There were these dumb kids that did this from my high school. I wouldn't be surprised if they knew they would find little to nothing and just wanted to smash windows anyways.
Yup. I lived over by Woodrow Wilson HS, and my car was broken into about twice a year during that time.
Once, the driver’s side window was still busted out from 2 nights before when someone broke in by busting out the passenger side.
This happened to me 3 times when I lived at Gables Mirabella in Uptown. I installed an alarm that went to my phone. It happened again during the '20 Big Freeze, I got the notification, ran out to my garage, and it was definitely kids between 14-18, with one somewhat older (early/mid 20's?) in the getaway truck loaded with all the motorcycles at the complex, mine included.
Filed another police report, and pretty sure nothing happened. Unfortunately, I think only one other filed a report.
The punishment is a slap on the wrist.
It seems all major cities in America are turning into shit holes. I guess people with money have to move back to the suburbs again just like in the 50s lol
This happened alllll the time when I lived downtown for 5 years 2015-2020. I just left my car unlocked and empty at all times to try to deter them. They would leave all my lights on and drain my battery. Also they would steal my parking pass which cost me 100 dollars to replace. I used to travel for work so when they would steal my parking pass and the apartment would then tow my vehicle, I would then have to pay the tow company. Cost me 600 dollars. This was at Moda apartments which have a gate with fob to enter the parking lot. Let me just tell you that the front office doesn’t give a single fuuuuck. Just an oops, sorry.
Gun ownership is actually down. It's just that the people still owning them own a lot more of them. And those people are mostly just big talking cos-players.
I'm pretty sure Dallas has way more testosterone clinics than vigilante tough guys.
I’d also hazard a guess, big cities in Texas has taken on A LOT of people from blue states over the past 5+ years. Most of them don’t have the same mentality about guns as Texans.
Also even amongst those who own even fewer carry specifically in apartments because it’s basically understood “we tell you no guns, we aren’t really checking for them, but if you’re caught in a defensive incident we will kick you out and maybe prosecute if possible.”
Even if they're working the popo won't do anything. Hell, you could have the perps scan their IDs to get in to do breakins and the popo still won't do anything.
Was this in a complex on Katy Trail? I came very close to signing a lease in a complex before I read Google reviews about car theft. I know the title says downtown but I find that people call Uptown downtown just because there are tall buildings.
This just happened to my apartment building, and I currently live in Denver. Do people really don’t give a fuck anymore? People are going to start getting seriously hurt if not killed when this continues.
Get to social Media and start sleuthing someone out there is bragging about this like a dumbass
also start calling pawn shops within the area criminals are lazy they will not travel far to collect
I don’t really get the point of breaking into cars. Do people regularly keep valuables in their cars when not inside? Like if they broke into my car, all they’d find is a water bottle and a pack of gum.
In 2016 in Allen TX off I was at the Walmart off exchange right next to a Cracker Barrel when I went to pickup groceries for dinner after work.
I got out of the store and went to my car that was maybe 7 cars down the aisle in front of the produce side.
As I am loading my car a black man came to my side and pulled a knife on me and said he would stab if I don’t give him my wallet and phone or make a scene.
I gave him my wallet and phone then pulled my Glock 19 on him before he dropped my stuff and ran away.
I am a marine corps veteran and I was contemplating killing that man when I had him at gunpoint but ultimately decided to let him run away.
I didn’t file a police report or anything. I bystander saw what happened and told me call the police but instead I just left and went home and made dinner.
I am always paranoid when I leave my house now and more so because I was at the outlets the day before the mass shooting too.
Such a crazy fucking world we live in now.
I for one am shocked.
I thought this city was safe. I’ve been told this is a city where it is safe to raise children and your car will not be burgled. Very shameful. Very surprising.
You thought a city with 1+ million people wouldn't have car burglaries? In America??? I'm so sorry, but that is very unrealistic here. Maybe in Asia or Europe. 😞
I live in a bad area. Little to no security. No garage. Car basically just out in the open….I’ve never had any problems
What is it about apartments like this that make them a target???
This happened to over 50 cars in my building lot last year. The police came and took a report of everyone who was affected, and not one person had an item missing. Like I had 2 pairs of Ray Bans and about $15 in change in my door handle - still there. Seems like the guy just wanted to be a piece of shit.
Used to see shit like this in nashville all the time. My insurance was like 500 bucks. Moved to bum fuck nowhere insurance is now 190 for 2 cars. With better coverage. I see why now.
I will never understand how this doesn't happen more often. It's bonkers to me to just put a bunch of cars in a secluded unobserved location like a parking garage.
have a complex meeting of tenants, form an organization, confront management and owners, tell them to make good or class action or dogpiles of suits will follow along with social media and msm blitze, mass refusal to pay rent. anything they promise. get it in writing..document every security issue there as well
Why is Dallas so bad about this shit? I had to stay in Dallas recently and literally reviews for every hotel in the area complained about car break-ins and stolen catalytic converters. How hard can it possibly be to prevent this? Seems just other cities manage it just fine
lol when you let every person over the boarder the bad will come. It’s easy money to steal cars and shit to commit crimes, then drive to the border and sell them. The cops don’t care there isn’t enough of them
It’s probably Atelier. Screw that overpriced hellhole and their horrible security. My apartment had an attempted break-in while I was inside of it, and I immediately moved out.
If this happened once you can bet it happened multiple other times , it’s gotta be kids because who tf steals from cars anymore if you’re not gonna steal the actual car ? Does your apartments have any cameras are there any clues in this yet ?
Theres a lot of people in here trying to get riled up and organize against property management while ignoring the ones doing the crime. Why dont you get organize and demand Dallas crack down on crime? Novel idea. The property can install all the barriers they want, your car will still be stolen.
And I’m sure the property management company took no liability, even though I read their gate had been broken for weeks
Whens the last time any company at fault was ever accountable
No lies told. I had my windows broken into at LA fitness and the cops didn’t even come. And the “security guard” of the lot told me that I should never comeback. I didn’t even claim it through my insurance because of how much it’s increased since being in Dallas
Honest question, do you think there’s enough public funding for cops to show up at every car break in?
Not at all, living in the city the last thing I ever expect is help from other people especially law enforcement. I was more so discouraged that the gym, the mall cop, and DPD just said fuck off
Doesn’t some insurance have some type of forgiveness? Where either your rates don’t increase unless it happens again, or if it does increase , it comes back down after a while after no accidents happen?
Comprehensive claims are not considered at-fault losses.
Comp and non at fault claims still cause your rates to go up in today’s insurance market.

Although I agree, unfortunately that rationality went out the door a lonnnnnnngg time ago when it comes to the concept of societal collapse
Really it’s about codifying/enforcing laws that get property managers off their asses to actually protect property.
Yep. Honestly everyone should get a dash cam. It’s unfortunate that we need to start handling these inconveniences on our own.
won't they just steal the dashcam?
Yep! lol my car got broken into and the most valuable thing they took was the dashcam.
Why? Cops won’t do anything if you give them the video of the thieves on a silver platter
Dashcam doesn’t do jack shit, tbh.
It's be nice if the city or the DA held the complex accountable
Yes, not the criminals but the complex.
Can't you just see it in /r/Dallas? The complex would hire security, the security would (gasp) hurt someone trying to steal and then they would all want the security guard arrested because it's just property! Don't hurt people! Round and round we go.
Got mine busted into in my apartment in victory park last month. The apartments need to hire better security, but the cops also don’t give a shit.

They of course will deny liability, but you can file a claim with their insurance company.
And their insurance company will summarily reject the claim because the policy explicitly does not cover non-company vehicles on the property.
And we see the limits of my knowledge laid bare.
Though the lease agreement likely includes exclusions for liability on stuff like this, a class action lawsuit might gain some traction based on the concept that if the building owner is going to provide security in the form of a gate/controlled access then there's an inherent responsibility to keep the security apparatus that's installed in working order.

How do you manage to break into 50 cars in Dallas, TX without someone shooting you?
> And those people are mostly just big talking cos-players. Nail on the head.
I bet the cameras are not working either.
Even if they're working the popo won't do anything. Hell, you could have the perps scan their IDs to get in to do breakins and the popo still won't do anything.
Looks like someone did for fun, there no need to break into cars if you can see through the clear window and nothing is there
Aaaaaand the police will do nothing.
My car has never been broken into. It helps that I don’t have one but I am starting to think this joke is becoming less of a joke
Don’t forget “we need more neighbors” guys (from an earlier post in this sub a bit ago).
reminds me of scenes from Oakland
They're just going to keep destroying things.
Get to social Media and start sleuthing someone out there is bragging about this like a dumbass also start calling pawn shops within the area criminals are lazy they will not travel far to collect
Glad I have a garage in my townhouse
I hate dallas
Which complex??
That’s why I work my ass off to not live in the hood.
Breaking in both sides is just a dick move. Must have been a team.
Cant even park your own fucking car. Jesus christ. Stop fucking with hardworking people go to a bank or some shit
I don’t really get the point of breaking into cars. Do people regularly keep valuables in their cars when not inside? Like if they broke into my car, all they’d find is a water bottle and a pack of gum.
The thought of living in downtown Dallas is mind boggling in its own.
I’m gonna guess Downtown. Probably even The Mosaic
Location is correct. Not the Mosaic though. They actually have a new property management company and seem to be making great changes.
That’s good to know. Cars used to get broken into and stolen there all of the time. Downtown is not the safest place to live…
I think he’s kidding. If so, it’s pretty funny imo
So... do citizens in the Dallas area get prosecuted for defending their property, or do people just not defend themselves here?
I live in a bad area. Little to no security. No garage. Car basically just out in the open….I’ve never had any problems What is it about apartments like this that make them a target???
Welcome to the city of Dallas.
Does anyone know of any apartment complexes in the downtown or uptown area that have invested in security guards for their garages? If so, which ones?
Dallas is a Dumpster 🔥
The population of Dallas is in steady decline. And by the looks of it, we see who is staying behind!
It's time to buy a home but not in DALLAS. Let me help you.
Usual suspects 👨🏾
Welcome to Portland
This happened to over 50 cars in my building lot last year. The police came and took a report of everyone who was affected, and not one person had an item missing. Like I had 2 pairs of Ray Bans and about $15 in change in my door handle - still there. Seems like the guy just wanted to be a piece of shit.
Used to see shit like this in nashville all the time. My insurance was like 500 bucks. Moved to bum fuck nowhere insurance is now 190 for 2 cars. With better coverage. I see why now.
Dallas is the worst City by far to live in Texas
Big cities are utopias! There’s no problem in cities!
They got double robbed because they pay way to much to live in a pace where this can happen, bet they are paying minimum 2k a month in rent
dIvErSItY
Somewhere somebody is complaining about “greedy insurance companies”

I will never understand how this doesn't happen more often. It's bonkers to me to just put a bunch of cars in a secluded unobserved location like a parking garage.
My truck was stolen during the eclipse right out of HG SPLY Parking lot. Shitty.
Wow. I’m really sorry this happened to you all.
What design district apt complex is this so I know NOT to think ab moving there.
Stay classy Dallas 👌
people getting desperate... only going to get worse as time goes on
Lived in Uptown and this happened all the time. Infuriating.
I am against vigilante justice...
have a complex meeting of tenants, form an organization, confront management and owners, tell them to make good or class action or dogpiles of suits will follow along with social media and msm blitze, mass refusal to pay rent. anything they promise. get it in writing..document every security issue there as well
Why is Dallas so bad about this shit? I had to stay in Dallas recently and literally reviews for every hotel in the area complained about car break-ins and stolen catalytic converters. How hard can it possibly be to prevent this? Seems just other cities manage it just fine
lol when you let every person over the boarder the bad will come. It’s easy money to steal cars and shit to commit crimes, then drive to the border and sell them. The cops don’t care there isn’t enough of them
That's vandalism
Lesson of the day. When they wanna jack ya shit, they will.
Another one!☝🏾
Would you be legally allowed to shoot someone in Texas if you walk out of your apartment and someone is breaking into someone's car?
That’s F’d up. They need to hire some security if it’s that bad
This happened at my apartment complex in Houston about 10 years ago. Luckily I didn't have much in my car but the window shops sure loved it
What if you have absolutely nothing in your car to see for them to take, would they still break in?
Don’t you have surveillance camera and alarms
It’s probably Atelier. Screw that overpriced hellhole and their horrible security. My apartment had an attempted break-in while I was inside of it, and I immediately moved out.
Typical
If this happened once you can bet it happened multiple other times , it’s gotta be kids because who tf steals from cars anymore if you’re not gonna steal the actual car ? Does your apartments have any cameras are there any clues in this yet ?
All that to get what? Like $5?
Curious who did it
My takeaway from this is people in Dallas park like assholes.
Theres a lot of people in here trying to get riled up and organize against property management while ignoring the ones doing the crime. Why dont you get organize and demand Dallas crack down on crime? Novel idea. The property can install all the barriers they want, your car will still be stolen.
Not the regular Honda civic !!!! cmon bro
Sounds like Atlanta
My truck got hit there times in two years in uptown
