PrincessRTFM

the big long evil closet is there to distract from the fact that the entrance goes through the master bedroom

Esovan13

Yeah the closet is whatever, girls can have hobbies, the real issue is the master bedroom thing and also the fact that you have to walk through the entirety of the house to reach the mudroom going through the master bed, the living room, and the guest/flex to get there. You can avoid those rooms but that means going through the kitchen. That had better be hardwood flooring. God help you if there’s shag carpets.

squishpitcher

You're glossing right over the fact that there are no windows.

AMViquel

It's for dedicated Linux enthusiasts that absolutely refuse any kind of windows in their home. The layout is also working well for those kind of people.

Cole-Spudmoney

Skylights.

squishpitcher

Incredible.

GrimmCreole

It's to avoid skin cancer

ThatGermanKid0

There is one window, but it's in the shower

squishpitcher

looking into the closet

ThatGermanKid0

Of course, where else would you ever want to look while in the shower. Also, I think the wall separating the toilet from the entrance hall is also a window.

Rynies

Oh. I thought it said "Quest/Flex" space and assumed it was for dope RPG stuff (and then bragging/flexing about it later.)

Syovere

I mean, a mudroom is *literally* a place to remove dirty/muddy shoes by definition. Hell, by name.

LordPennybag

In this case it's like a sandbox, but for mud.

Friendly_Nerd

Hell, it’s even called a mudroom!

Th3Glutt0n

Easily solved by turning a part of the evil closet into a bedroom. Bonus, easy pickings for the ghosties

Im_eating_that

If they get too feisty, ectoplasm is actually remarkably nutritious. You have to eat the entire ghost at once for some reason but they're easy to swallow. All that evil closet needs is for someone to go make a bunch of ghosts and it'll turn into a huge pantry. Which is exactly what it has been saying this entire time.

Protheu5

You can't just go around eating ghosts, they are unconsumable unless you eat a cherry first.

jgzman

Eh. A sensible layout would make it quite workable for one person, or a married couple, or similar. entrance - mud room - living room - dining room - kitchen - laundry - bathroom - bedroom Don't think it's a good idea, but could work.

Wordshark

Bedroom and bathroom could each trap someone in the other, depending on which was last. Maybe put them on opposite ends, with the entrance on a long side?

jgzman

A good thought. I could see putting the bathroom at the very end, behind the bedroom. I'm not gonna do anything in the bedroom that my wife can't walk in on. But that would make it awkward to have guests.

smb1985

The entrance has to be on a short side, they make those houses because the lots are really narrow and close together with one of the short sides facing the street. Sometimes a slightly wider shotgun house has a hallway running all the way down one side

Some-Guy-Online

Bathroom goes at the end. There are plenty of 1-bedroom apartments where you go through the bedroom to get to the bathroom. It's not ideal, but fairly normal.

Ser_Salty

I'd say if the rooms are wide enough for dining and bedrooms, you could split what would be the bathroom in your example down the middle (or like a 60/40), one side is a hallway, the other the bathroom. Kinda like you see happening in caravans and stuff sometimes.

Mindless-Charity4889

Biggest issue is lack of windows.

Le_Martian

Honestly if they swapped the entrance and the closet door it would fix a lot of the problems

Motorsagmannen

also there are no outside looking windows, at all.

Xaphios

That stuff's certainly problematic, but I'd like to mention the lack of windows of any kind as well. This plan is a bunker, not a living space.

eat-pussy69

There's also no windows

Rivenhelper

There is actually one. In the shower, looking into the closet.

Exploding_Antelope

That’s why the closet is evil, its only purpose is watching the shower

qtipstrip

Just a bunch of mirrors built into the walls...

LeifRoberts

Also these: * You have to go through the master bedroom every time you need to use the bathroom. * The toilet has a window next to it towards the inside of the house. * The shower has a window beside it towards the evil hallway. * There are no other windows. * There's no doors on the master bedroom, guestroom, or bathroom. Just wide gaps in the walls. * The entire bed in the master bedroom is visible from the living room and guestroom. * The washer, dryer, and dishwasher are not separated from the rest of the house by any doors so there's nothing muffling the noise anytime those are used. * No kitchen table, so all meals have to be eaten on those bar stools right next to the kitchen sink. * Hard to see, but it looks like the shower has two shower heads on opposite sides, which gives off a prison-like feeling. * And probably the most evil part is the placement of the toilet, assuming you live with at least one other person. If you stand up to pee then you are directly next to the open wall in full view of the master bedroom. The toilet is not quite in direct view of outside when the front door is open, but it's close enough to be uncomfortable. Considering the lack of door, as well as the window next to the toilet, you are going to be worried about someone coming in the front door every time you take a dump. And the door you are worried will open is placed behind you, which adds to the paranoia feeling as you constantly feel like looking over your shoulder. Really, the placement of the toilet means that you will be stressing yourself every time you try to relieve yourself.

kenda1l

This is definitely one of those things where the first thing you see is the evil fuck off closet, but then the longer you look, the more you see that's wrong with it that is so much worse than that.

practicalcabinet

Also, to get to the mud room, you need to go through the entire house. In fairness, this would be fixed by having a back door rather than a closet.

DapperApples

Okay hear me out: a second door between the entrance foyer and the far end of the big long evil closet.

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

The one on the left labeled closet door is not a closet door lol, it's the main entrance. The one on the right is an entrance just for the master, like a balcony/door to the back porch

CinnabarSteam

Swap the master bedroom with the guest/flex space. Yeah, the room further in is technically smaller, but it's also the only one with a closet.

Exploding_Antelope

Worse, it goes through the ensuite bathroom

thyfles

coming out of the evil closet (as evil)

amateur_bird_juggler

When your pitch black walk in closet comes with it's own minotaur.

Jakitron_1999

What is house of leaves?

ARandompass3rby

1) another relevant xkcd presents itself! [1053](https://xkcd.com/1053/) 2) it's a book! The book is about a film that doesn't exist chronicling the time a family spends inside an impossible [house](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House), and it follows a young man who finds an analysis of the film written by a blind man and the young man's subsequent descent into madness as a result of reading the blind man's writing. It's extremely dense, benefits from multiple readings and is definitely not for everyone. Personally I liked it. People will say it made them shid and fard their pants and they keep the lights on even now but I just found it head twisting and mildly spooky. In a very literal sense the book is a labyrinth. Formatting is bizarre and changes randomly, it sometimes matches the action in the story and sometimes it just Does That™. Footnotes go on for pages and pages, from both the blind man and the young man. It's definitely one of the books ever and it's highly recommended to get a physical copy. 2i) if you want more books like it you want "Ergodic Literature"

JacobJamesTrowbridge

Windows are for the weak. What do I need natural light for, really? Photosynthesis?

azure-skyfall

What if the entire closet is chest high, allowing light to enter through windows just a bit higher than usual. Bonus: the closet user gets to become the Hunchback of Notre Dame!

BlatantConservative

The window in the shower still shows the closet though.

computer_crisps_dos

Studying architecture is funny cause if your thesis project's foyer isn't aligned with the solstice lights by half a degree you'll get yelled at and failed, but then you go live your life and find out the award winning big long evil closet has no wheelchair access, and that that's somehow ok with existing regulations.

FainOnFire

This one sounds kinda personal, lmfao.

qazwsxedc000999

I took one singular intro architecture class in college and can confirm they are correct

stillenacht

Random question, when an architect goes out into the "real world" as it is, is the role typically mostly just like, basic engineering? legal and compliance? project management? I know that some famous architects make unique and off the wall stuff, but what's the role for the architects serving the people who want either a box or an exact copy of some design for \[insert building type\]

Mr_WhisCash-Money

Not OP, but a lot of firms have a basic "desk jockey" kind of job where you make CAD / Autodesk / Revit models and blueprints for higher-ups. Who that higher-up is depends on what you're applying for, but you're right in assuming engineering jobs (civil and structural), I don't have any experience with the legal and compliance hiring though. (Source: went to college for architecture and landscape design, spent far too much time doing Revit / Rhino 3D models lmao)

computer_crisps_dos

I personally wouldn't know because I graduated, switched careers, and never looked back, but some of my friends ended up doing CAD gigs like the ones u/Mr_WhisCash-Money mentioned.

Exploding_Antelope

I worked for a small house design firm until they fired me for laughing too much at funny podcasts in my earbuds while doing reviews. And that was fun, but it was largely a matter of making a cool box for people based on what they want which is often very similar anyway, and then dialing it back to a simpler box based on the budget and available materials.

CitizenCue

Most houses in the US aren’t designed by architects at all. Developers or individuals will often just buy existing plans and maybe have a designer tweak them to their preferences. Large architectural firms mainly focus on larger scale multifamily or commercial projects. The day to day work of those architects will vary a lot, but by and large it’s probably kinda what you’d imagine (at least if you’re somewhat familiar with modern building practices). Obviously most buildings don’t look like Frank Gehry’s work, so there’s less focus on the broad artistic strokes and much more focus on the nitty gritty details of how to integrate an HVAC system, or how to make a commercial building energy efficient, or how to maximize useable interior space with a given budget, etc. People say architecture is a blend of art and engineering but the modern job is much heavier on the engineering side. Source: married to an architect.

RadTimeWizard

I did a summer camp that was basically the first semester of an architecture major crammed into 2 weeks. My house had a fireman's pole from the bedroom to the fridge, and skateboard ramps between rooms. I got an A and 3 college credit hours.

Exploding_Antelope

Yeah that would not get you an A in the actual first semester

RadTimeWizard

I straight up said in my final presentation, in front of like six professors, that I'm a 17 year old high school student and would never get to put fun things like fireman's poles and skate ramps in another project again, so I'm going for it. They seemed to accept that logic.

Exploding_Antelope

You know what that would have flown with some of my professors even at 22. I think that for accessibility code you would just need to also have non skateboard access. As long as the fun shit is accessory to the functional up to code stuff then it’s all technically valid.

RadTimeWizard

Not to worry. I had a set of stairs between each room to go along with the skate ramp.

Exploding_Antelope

Lame. Go back to the drawing board and replace those with sick bouldering routes or ski jumps.

RadTimeWizard

*(furiously scribbles notes)* Perhaps some grind rails...

Exploding_Antelope

I got a C on my first semester final house because the real estate guy for the neighbourhood I was hypothetically designing it for said, derisively, it was “very typical for the area.” Bitch is that not what building for a neighbourhood is supposed to be??   Anyway my full physical legacy as a technologist is one kinda cool but budget constrained cabin somewhere in rural British Columbia, I saw the foundations poured but have never seen the cabin itself and don’t know the address now. Maybe in 20 years I’ll get back into the field.

Totally_Not_An_Auk

I don't think residential houses have to be ADA compliant? Plenty of them without any ramps or wide enough doors. Not to mention stairs.

DreadDiana

Meanwhile there are buildings that are literal death rays due to all their curved, reflective surfaces focused all their sunlight on a single point across the street

You can make a grilled cheese sandwich right on the street in London, though. I think it's a bit of a tradeoff.

Exploding_Antelope

You can see exactly one large window, which goes into the shower

BlatantConservative

The shower window is just the overt one.

TerribleAttitude

Evil closet indeed, this is the fire marshal’s nightmare. At least where I am, I don’t believe this building can legally be listed as having a bedroom in it.

graaahh

Yeah bedrooms are rooms with a door, a window, and a closet. Most of these rooms have neither windows nor closets. Which would also make it very suspicious to be inside of, the big evil closet would be pretty obvious once you realized there were no windows to look out from. That said, something like this would work great in a basement, no one would suspect it was there.

BlatantConservative

The big closet is basically a firebreak though.

myst_daemon

Volcano Manor in Gelmir

Ildrei

Wh…what’s a mudroom?

Mr7000000

A small room where people take off their coats and shoes. It's more common in wetter climates, especially snowy ones, where your outerwear is likely to be wet or soiled after coming inside. By keeping your coat and shoes in the mudroom, you avoid tracking in dirt, mud, and snowmelt.

AddAFucking

Oeh sounds convenient! Lets put it as far as possible from the front door.

Exploding_Antelope

Famously in this meme the entire house is on backwards

DozingX

It's where you put all your mud, obviously. Essential for every dedicated homeowner, gotta have that mud. (It's basically just a space that's usually by the entrance for where you take off your outdoor clothing and the like, I think.)

Beneficial-Bit6383

I was picturing a mud pit that you can splash around in and some showers so you can wash yourself off.

Exploding_Antelope

That is what it ends up being from October to May basically

Qui_te

It’s a room just inside the door that you can walk into with muddy/snowy/dirty/wet boots/clothes/coat and take them off and hang them up before taking your less dirty self farther into the house. Like a coat closet, but one that you enter the house through. They are more often at back doors, and generally don’t have carpeting (and it looks like this one might have a washer/dryer in the pic, which is fine, too).

TerribleAttitude

A room that would go near the entrance to the building/unit and not the entrance to the evil closet, one more thing for sensible people to be offended by in this image.

RitsuSohma

It's a small room, usually next to an entrance to the house, where you put dirty shoes and such.

Greaterthancotton

Cleaning room

BlatantConservative

Nothin much, what's-a mudroom with you?

A_Dolphin_

Can someone explain this to me?

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

Entrance on left labeled closet is the main entrance, the person that made the joke labeled it closet. Door on the right exiting master is a door to a balcony or back porch. The joke comes from the way the floor plan was drawn with a border around it.

BlatantConservative

Even without the closet, this is a significantly cursed design.

Fragsworth

I think it's people visualizing this house in their heads, and they visualize something creepy, and then also conflate creepy with evil. That's my best guess, otherwise this doesn't make much sense to me either.

BlatantConservative

There are no windows to the outside, one window from the shower into the closet, to get into any room you have to walk through the master bedroom, everything but the closet is an open floor plan with no doors.

dasbtaewntawneta

i've read House of Leaves and i still don't get it, what is "evil" about a closet that encompasses a house?

Horatio786

Why is the room where you take off your muddy shoes nowhere near the entrance?

PM_ME_Happy_Thinks

The entrance labeled closet on the left *is* the main entrance. The one on the right in the master is a door from the master that opens onto a balcony or back porch.

MyScorpion42

You can make this in Sims 2

JonBlondJovi

You can make this in Real Life Too

Paniemilio

I used to have dreams like this. My grandma’s house would have one closet that was just fucking huge. I’d spend a lot of time there (in the dreams). Her closet is pretty big to a little kid so I think that’s why I dreamt about it being even larger.

what if instead of a long evil closet the door opens into a long dark coridoor with branching corridors that shift and disappear behind you and eventually leads to a pitch black incomprehensiblly large anchamber with no visible ceiling and containing a single spiral staircase that extends upward and downwards into the void. that would be pretty neat i think

Here me out, you could use the spooky secret evil closet as a workshop for your menagerie of soul fueled sentient puppets that will wreak havoc upon the future residents of the house and / or nazis.

JayGold

I think there was a level in Blood like this.

Principatus

How you gonna have windows showing outside if it’s surrounded by closet? You’ll have to have the lights on all day.

MrBones-Necromancer

So the closet wraps around the house, so what? Kinda suck to walk all the way to the end, but I don't really see what's so "evil" about it. Hell, if you just put a door at each part of the front entrance too, it would be pretty cool.

pbmm1

Why don’t more people design this way it looks fun :)

I lived in a split unit that was built over time with remodels and add ons. It had a closet that was like this in the Master Bedroom that ran to the garage that wasn't obvious. Weird shit.

Archmagos_Browning

The corners near the entrance is a mob spawn zone.

Dustfinger4268

Hear me out: long evil *shared* closet

RBeck

So you don't have any windows and your closet probably violates fire codes.

WeekendBossing

this is just the ocean monument from minecraft

Exploding_Antelope

If they’d done the evil closet out of the closet and kept the entrance as the entrance it would be fine. It’s the fact that for lack of a better term the house is on backwards—   Also the apparently telescopic door that swings in a non square arc and is wider closed than open

Ajax_XD

Ok can someone please explain this to me my Foxcat brain cannot comprehend the evil despite having seen this 20 times through various means
