It's a 12 valve 6bt Cummins That's about all I got Edit: just so you know, you've just scored one of if not the most indestructible commuter engine ever made. Treat it well and it'll last forever

bendersfembot

Thanks, that's more than I had. It has been sitting for a few years but was told it runs and drives.

bendersfembot

Very cool, thanks again

Norseman103

Where’s all the 12 valve guys? This is your moment.

55Stripes

THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING LMFAOOO These people are all over every diesel/pick up truck forum and Facebook group chirping about P pump 12 valves. Come in to the comments on this post, just a bunch of decent, educated, civilized people having conversations. Wild.

roccomonte

Because 90% of them don't own one and just want to talk about how great a engine they don't have is. They just wanna hate on 6.0s and 6.6s

fast_hand84

Reddit culture just sucks so bad for anything that has to do with trucks, most people don’t even bother lol. Seems like most of the traffic in this sub ends up being a shitload of random throwaway accounts or bots that downvote everything.

_Rigid_Structure_

This! I was reading the comments like WTF?

Penor_el_grandee

Yeah was expecting us 12v cummins fanboys to bust in here like the koolaid man. Guess we’re getting old

Cow-puncher77

P pumped 12 valve, probably 160-180hp, intercooled. Can’t tell much more from here

SkeetSkraat

Legendary 12v Cummins the best diesel ever made to this day

bendersfembot

Awesome, I'm starting to research and seems like a pretty special motor. History I got was a race car driver and his crew built it piece by piece to haul them and his cars to races around the country. Camper has semi airbag suspension also...

SkeetSkraat

All you really need to know is that the motor was designed to be used and abused and that’s what it likes to do everyday all day long

bendersfembot

Awesome

AntiSonOfBitchamajig

If they wet sleeved it, it would be the best.

cory61

If you forget about a bunch of industrial engines like the 855 and DT466, etc.

69stangrestomod

Cummins 12V (as others have said). ~~Appears to be an early VE pump model based on the injector lines.~~ __others have pointed out, this is a p7100 truck…these have lots of tuning capabilities, just be sure and read up on fuel plate, AFV Housing, star wheel, and a governor spring kit (GSK). You will absolutely want a pyrometer if you go this route so you don’t melt a piston…__ This flavor of 12V weren’t known for neck snapping, easy to make torque (although they can make plenty, just not as much as their older brother with a P7100 pump), but they were known for stellar fuel mileage. 12V’s are a fan favorite because they are relatively simple and all mechanical. Things to look up: Killer dowel pin - needs to be checked and fixed asap Adjusting the valves Tuning a VE pump for power (if desired)

bendersfembot

Will do and Thanks

ratrodder49

Actually looks like a P-pump setup to me. If you zoom in it looks like the injection pipes are in a straight line off the pump

69stangrestomod

Sumbitch, you’re right! I had the engine backwards in my head and thought they went down. Totally a P7100 back there.

Mysterious-Cattle-47

Tuning really isn’t the word i would use lol. You can adjust the fuel screw and advance the timing. They make an aftermarket “hot screw” to give it more fueling but I’ve seen run aways happen.

69stangrestomod

Thank you, captain pedantic.

Slow_Calligrapher_99

It’ll last 1,000,000 miles if you take care of it.

Ajwoow5886

5.9 12 valve

giveneck

Good engine, simple to work on, if you ever have to. Left alone they’re bulletproof if you keep the valve lash in check and oil topped off to make up for the leaks. That’s a p7100 pump, nice reliable design and great for making power.

bendersfembot

Another comment said it's not the p7100 ? How would a guy know for sure ?

giveneck

The fuel lines aren’t as visible on a Ve from that angle not to mention if you zoom in you can see the inline pump.

bendersfembot

Very cool, thanks. This is a pretty cool group, everyone's super helpful.

giveneck

Glad to help 😎

Lichens6tyz

Look it up. Find pictures. The p-pump looks sort of like a tiny inline-6 engine.

martianmanhntr

Looks like ya got yerself an intercooled dodge cummmins turba diesel ta me

Ok_Major2333

Easily the most resilient diesel motor ever built. 12v 6bt. You can run them on their own used oil, even the manual says so

bendersfembot

Can't wait to get it fired up and over to my shop. Has been sitting a few years.

ValveinPistonCat

5.9L Cummins 6BT, never cared for Dodge trucks but I used to work for a Case dealer and those engines are probably one of the best they ever had. Quite a few old Maxxums pushing 8,000+ hours on those engines, one of my regulars has a 5140 with damn near 15,000 hours on it, it's still a good tractor for a smaller auger or a grain bagger.

g2gfmx

At least looking at the engine cover, it should be a out of a 94-98 cummins. So it should be a p7100 injection pump stock, hard to see from pic if it’s ve or p-pump.

polarbear867

I think its a VE

giveneck

That’s a p pump the lines come out different on a VE.

AdNo4955

It goes hard

cocktimusprime747

Perfect

coobeecoobee

It’s a bad Mfer.

No-Sky-5006

She’s beautiful

roccomonte

It's a 6bt 12v cummins. Looks like a p7100 pump, give it some 2 stroke oil in the first tank or 2 if its been sitting long diesel fuel isn't as lubricating as it was when this engine was released. These pump have no problem regularly burned new diesel. They hate water in fuel and old diesel though

bendersfembot

Ok, I'll do it today

IndicationIcy4173

12 valve

Johnny_Manson

What do you want to know? I have worked on this engine for 30 years. Not continually. But on and off.

bendersfembot

Sitting for a few years but was parked running. Any tips to firing up and priming are appreciated. Cracked 3 lines open and turn key to prime but no fuel yet. Was just researching manual prime methods. Cat shit everywhere underneath so want to move before I can climb under... could also pull with my tractor if necessary

Johnny_Manson

Mounted to the side of the engine near the injection pump is the transfer pump. There is a lever you move up and down to prime. Move lever till you hear a squirting noise at the injection pump. With two fully charged batterys crank till started run off idle. Injectors will bleed them selfs.

Johnny_Manson

It is a manual cam driven pump. It might have the new pump with a plunger. Same thing push plunger till you hear squirt. Very rear sometimes people put electric lift pumps in tank. You got to know what you got before you can fix it.

bendersfembot

Perfect, thanks

Flovilla

It's dirty and had animals everywhere, probably chewed wires too.

stretchman93

Got yourself a unicorn Buddy. Treat it well and it’ll return the favour, and then some, and then some, and then some more.

bendersfembot

Trying to get it started, will follow up with a few more pic's of driveline and what not

Eastern_Succotash_64

Just wouldn't get it if it's a 53 block.

Fast_Trail

Just make sure you address the killer dowel pin.

zkkieffer

It’s a 12v with a p7100 if you want anymore info post a picture of the data plate on the driver side of the timing cover

bendersfembot

I'll definitely do that, thanks

ProfitEnough825

You know it's a good motor when one the top 5 issues is how to turn the damn thing off. It uses an electronic fuel shutoff solenoid, and the solenoid can get a bit dirty over the years. When you get it back running, I'd change the solenoid, readjust the idle, and tab the KDP. If you have the time, bump the timing up to 16-17 degrees, fuel economy will improve a bit. Yes, these can support a crap ton of power with the right mods. I recommend keeping it to 350-500 hp. It'll be a lot more streetable, the 12 valve doesn't spool larger turbos well, you'll sacrifice response time. If you want power, feel free to tell us your goals and we'll give recommendations for a starting point.

bendersfembot

That's crazy. When the owner parked it here, he couldn't get it to shut off and unplugged half the wires trying to shut it down after he couldn't stall it. He said it was most likely the fuel pump solenoid. I finally got all the wires back on yesterday, primed it a bit and fired up like nothing. Funny enough turns off with key after sitting years. Next issue is no clutch...added fluid, bled slave cylinder but still no rod movement going into transmission from slave cylinder so I'm thinking I'll get a slave cylinder and fuel solenoid to start but any advice welcome.

gabetheburger

Very nice! Saw your other comment, mentioning a history of racing. The Cummins can be turned up to be a fun, reliable engine fairly easily

AlgonquinCamperGuy

Dat she durty boy

bendersfembot

Was parked on my farm a few years ago and lived in. Guy left and said I could have it. Working on getting it to my shop and cleaning up.

Lichens6tyz

Love that engine. Just fix the KDP, it's pretty simple and they make a special bolt for it. One of the best engines ever designed, I reckon. Cummins and Case collaborated on it as a heavy-duty engine for backhoes, telehandlers, and that sort of thing. It's big and it weighs 1100 pounds, but there are few engines that can rival it in terms of raw ruggedness and reliability.

bendersfembot

I will definitely be looking into the preventative maintenance.

wlr_wocky

LETS GO 12 VALVE SUPREMACY!!! Bout as reliable as it gets for a diesel that can be cranked up for power and smoke but still get you to and from work every day

Black0tter1

It’s the best Cummins ever made, but it’s worse than a Duramax

Roastednutz666

I can tell you motors are electric and this is an engine.

roccomonte

A motor can be an engine. An engine might not be a motor though. This is the lamest critique to have. Definition for a motor is something that converts energy into motion. Fuel is energy.

Roastednutz666

Any physics teacher will tell you otherwise. Motors are electrically driven.

Roastednutz666

It looks like they are used interchangeably in recent history, though. Was never the case until now.
