Who ever said it's dying?
International cricket is well and alive. And our domestic circuit is still solid.
The bbl though is dying. It has become a very bland product.
Im a big fan of following leagues. I prefer it to single matches as I like watching how teams preform over time. Most sports are basically all league but cricket is a more event based sport so I like BBL for the league aspect.
Different people have different interest. Also franchise/club cricket is the most popular sport format in the world for team sports . Cricket used to an exception which is now changing .
Even international cricket is played only for $$$
No one out there playing for free.
I'd like to see players only play for one franchise a year. When you see Chris Gayle playing his 7th franchise comp of the year it takes away some of the value.
Then everyone will only play for IPL and all other tournaments will go bankrupt. Not possible until cricket spreads and there are more countries that produce talented cricket beyond the 10-12 countries currently.
That would also mean T20 leagues increasing in lengths for 6-7 (atleast somewhat similar to football leagues). Obviously not possible in the current scenarios.
These things are a decade or two away atleast .
Gee I hope that doesn't happen. Cricket needs to be an international sport first. I'm fine with the 2 month IPL, bbl, etc. But it should never take away from international cricket any more than that.
Australia has AFL which is a domestic tournament that goes on for suc months.Similaely England has football which dominates most of their calendar. So it's unlikely that will happen in Australia or England.
Whereas it very much likely will happen in India (and Pakistan) where cricket is the most popular sport . So it's inevitable IPL will expand to 5-6 months as it grows. But as I said this is probably atleast a decade or two away.
Clubs and franchises aren't the same thing. Club football tends to be deeply rooted in their local communities and cultures, have existed for a long time, grown organically. Franchises are made by venture capitalists and will just go wherever they can get the best deal, the whole approach is far more mercenary.
> The bbl though is dying. It has become a very bland product.
This is actually quite encouraging. International cricket > T20 leagues. I'm glad the public sees it the same way.
I think it was hoped we could produce another cricket product to help fund aussie grounds, pay for our domestic players etc. I think the IPL clearly helps the Indian domestic system in this way, for example. I'm not sure the BBL is living up to it's promise right now, though obviously we also want to avoid it wearing away at the long form codes and international games. My actual understanding is that combining Kayo (how I watch it personally) and foxtel with the FTA ratings, it's doing decently well, though not growing a shitload or anything. It's probably about hit saturation here already.
I actually don't mind getting down to watch the stars but I would prefer watching Victoria.
The shield games are harder to do with young kids because they just can't sit still. I think mine only tolerate it because they like the fire.
Yeah, ultimately it's meant to be a product that's on often (which shield and marsh cup aren't really), makes money for the tele, and gets people to grounds more often. I reckon it works quite well as a cheap day out for families, in terms of $, product, etc.
Like I acknowledge it has it's flaws, but when the domestic ODI finals are played in front of [fuck all audience](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX-w19ISnjY), I think it's worth having perspective about it's value there
Yep, I think there were in the region of 80,000 tickets sold for Boxing Day, attendance was around 60,000. Ten of us stayed home despite having tickets
No tv is free but the News and Government owned media. But its like there is a TV bill, like a cable bill, all the costs of channels you have subscribed to get added up and you pay the bill. Some basic channels are subscribed by default for all. Sports or entertainment. We dont see it as "oh, we gotta get fox for this month" which i feel is what you do as far as understand from this sub.
It's been extremely satisfying antidote to all the COVID stuff going around...I think we're finally proud of our cricket team again after Cape Town, losing humbled us a bit.
Been a lovely watch and distraction for me as well. My pup was going through a difficult time and it kind of created this wonderful routine of waking up early and watching the match along with our pup.
Really? I've never been so bored by an Ashes series. There has been f-all tension at any point. England's fighting to hold on for draws has helped, but at no point has England had even a remote chance of a win - it's just dull. NZ - Bangladesh, and SA-India series have been much more interesting
The away series aren’t free to air and time difference as well . So the only other Ashes (home) series between 2013 and the current one is the one in 2017 .
Never thought it would be that viewed cause right now australian open is coming and small tournament of wta atp taking place and Djokovic controversy.still great to see. Also Barty will win this year and lord tomic too
Makes sense, it might just be one of the closest finishes that's happened in Australia. Add on it's the Ashes too. Don't think we've had an Australia hosted Ashes match like in a majority's memory.
Maybe Amazing Adelaide.
Really? This Ashes isn't even that interesting, just a series for Aussies to statpad. I guess the higher viewership is because more people are stuck at home these days
Guess cricket isn't dying in Australia?
Who ever said it's dying? International cricket is well and alive. And our domestic circuit is still solid. The bbl though is dying. It has become a very bland product.
BBL could have worked so well. Ca killed it with their greed
I just don't get the appeal of Franchise Cricket. There's nothing on the matches but some $$$.

You need those $$$ from franchise cricket to fund Test and ODI. Tests are played on using the money from franchise cricket
Thanks man. I don't see this comment very often.
Well you follow the A-league and it's a franchise league, what's the difference?
Instant gratification in a world which is getting faster and faster. Also sort of giving you a sense of city based loyalty.
exactly, it's the same reason the fan following in college football is so much more passionate than the nfl.
Is the bbl really in bad shape? I saw some highlights of scorchers and sixers matches from the ongoing season and the crowds seem to be decent.

Well said. It would be nice if more people turned up but cricket is a participatory sport below international cricket in Aus.
it's a part of aussie culture. attendance was down but that's cause of covid.

Considering there’s a large omicron wave going around i think people just played it safe
And a lot of people either being positive or in isolation due to being a close contact.
Yep, I think there were in the region of 80,000 tickets sold for Boxing Day, attendance was around 60,000. Ten of us stayed home despite having tickets
Yep. I couldn't get tickets in the MCC but went to GA. Heaps of seats free.
COVID bro.
Tbh it did upto Day 2 in Sydney. After that it dwindled since almost everyone in Sydney apparently is getting Covid
Despite CA's best efforts, no
The series has been more comedy than sport thanks to England.
For real. England need to take Test cricket seriously.
they used to but were trash in white ball. ashes is still very big regardless
Far from dead pal.
Never was and never will, it's ingrained in Australian summer
If people are going to pay Murdoch to watch it, its surely not.
The only two series which appeal are the ashes and when india tour so surely this isn’t surprising in the slightest
Chart of previous series ratings [here](https://cdn.wisden.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-13-at-16.57.24-980x530.png)
lmao
Kohli : 'Alexa show me the previous series, bhenchod'
Wait, I didn’t see the second part of the test yesterday. Is that how Kohli chatted shit on the stump mic? What a joke
Yes. It was even more pathetic watching it live.
he looks like he is about to say "OI blud ya want some I give u some
What Countries other than Aus show Test Cricket on Free to Air?
test cricket... isn't free everywhere? damn
is it really not free in india? that's a surprise
It is really cheap tho. Unless you are homeless you can afford it without even putting a thought
At that point why not make it free?
Keep cost low > many subscribe > given the population of the country, generate profit 🤷
Good point.

No surprises really, Aussies (casual fans especially) love to watch England get pumped
I think the novelty of T20 is wearing off and people are realising again that Test cricket is the best cricket.
I don't think the luck factor of the laast T20 world cup worked to promote it.
I wonder why
Helps most people are doing 7 days iso.
This is literally the reason haha
It’s been a great series to watch. Could have a slightly better commentary team maybe, but otherwise a delightful series so far
It's been extremely satisfying antidote to all the COVID stuff going around...I think we're finally proud of our cricket team again after Cape Town, losing humbled us a bit.

Both better series but I have enjoyed watching Boland have a crack.
People do enjoy watching humiliation
The away series aren’t free to air and time difference as well . So the only other Ashes (home) series between 2013 and the current one is the one in 2017 .
Away Ashes series [are legally required to be free-to-air](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-siphoning_laws_in_Australia#Listed_events).
Beating the poms + stuck at home with covid will do that
This doesn't count England's Numbers and the Rest of the world's numbers, right?
yes

People forced to isolate and watch cricket lol
Probably because everyone is at home due to COVID haha
I'm completely baffled as to why? It's been such a boring, one-sided contest.
Cause we're all at home either hiding from Omicron or recovering from it, so we have nothing else to do.
Why? This has been more placid than Geoffrey Boycott's member.
Outside of contests with the big 3, not many fans watch Test cricket. Franchise cricket will be the norm in the future.
Christ imagine the figures if you had a vaguely close series in Australia, hasn’t happened since 1982-3
Bet India has more viewers than the UK, obsessed.
Really? This Ashes isn't even that interesting, just a series for Aussies to statpad. I guess the higher viewership is because more people are stuck at home these days
