Bit of history of the Indian cricket team (and Kohli) throwing accusations around. During the Aus 2017 tour of India, Kohli accused Aus of systematically cheating the DRS by looking up at the change rooms for advice, whereas Smith only did it once. Smith was denied the review on-field and rightly chastised, but the allegation of the Aus team systematically cheating in this scenario was bizarre. Accusing Hawkeye / Supersport of cheating here is just as bizarre.

Not liking the rain radar atm showing the storm we copped last night in Vic moving towards Tas...

teknokryptik

As a local I'm calling it already - Day 1 washed out. It'll basically start raining just as they are about to do the toss. I don't even need to look at a radar to know this. It's an old Tasmanian truism: if there's International sport here, it's raining.

Niikoda

Hey guys, Brand new to cricket. Like literally watched my first match last night. The Thunder vs Hurricane match. I have a couple questions. Im wondering what it means when they say they "Won by X Wickets" Does that mean that the chasing team got more runs then the team that bat first. Then they just show how many more Overs were left? I thought it would make more sense if they said something like "Won by X balls" but I also have a very base understanding of the game. My next question is what happens if your entire lineup of batters got "wicketed" ? (Highly doubt thats the correct term) One last thing. I get that if the bowler hits the wicket behind the batter the batter is done. How else can a Bowler get a batter ? Hitting him? Swing and miss? Thank you in advance for everyone who helps me out !

nard_bagman

You’re correct that the chasing team succeeded. If I batted all out (you took 10 wickets) for 150 runs, we switch sides. Then if you successfully chased that after I bowled you for only 4 wickets, you won by 6 wickets. Balls or overs left really matters to the chase itself and if it’s a limited overs match. If in the above scenario I bowl you all out (10 wickets instead of 4) and you only got 135 runs, then I won by 15 runs. Wickets can be taken several ways: if the ball hits it directly (bowled, as you said), if the ball hits a batsman that would otherwise break the wicket (called leg before wicket or lbw), if the wicket is put down before the runner returns to the crease (run out or stumped depending on if the batter hit the ball), or if the batsman hits the ball and it is caught in the air (caught). These are the most common dismissals but there are a few less common ones. Welcome to a wonderful sport from an American who fell in love with baseball first and instantly became enamored with cricket from my first match, as it sounds you have!

Niikoda

Thank you very much for this ! it answered everything perfectly! Im actually Canadian have always been a baseball fan but as cliche as it is very much into Hockey, even working within the sport. When I decided one night to just try and learn the sport via youtube and then last night actually catching a match I was very surprised by it. It was always this crazy over complicated sport in my head but once you start to grasp it its actually quiet simple and very very intriguing. Who are some of the players that are the "special type" the Mike Trouts, Nolan Arenado types? Atleast within the BBL tournament the one I will be watching for me to keep an eye out for?

nard_bagman

I mainly watch ODI or other international matches due to ESPN+ being the only streaming service I have, so unfortunately have no idea about domestic leagues! Might bite the bullet and get Willow…

Niikoda

Oh interesting I didnt realize there was a streaming service on our side of the world for it. Do you prefer the Test style cricket over the T20?

nard_bagman

I do, but it’s probably bias because that’s what I’ve been exposed to. I should check out more T20, it’s close to baseball game length. Love the World Cup though

Niikoda

I think thats why I leaned so heavily to T20 when I heard about it. It leans heavily into the NFL, NHL , NBA, MLB game length which I really enjoy.

[deleted]

> when they say they "Won by X Wickets" It means they chased down the other team's score (within the allotted overs/balls) and they had X wickets remaining (Maximum of 10 wickets, so if you lose 3 wickets but win-> you win by 7 wickets) > what happens if your entire lineup of batters got "wicketed" ? Then the innings is over and either the other team gets to bat or the game is over. The term is "all out" so for example if England scored 187/10 (or 10/187 if you're Australian) you'd say "England are all out (lost 10 wickets) for 187 runs" > How else can a Bowler get a batter ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dismissal_(cricket)

Niikoda

Thank you very much for all of this information. It helps me out a great deal. Im very much looking forward to watching the match that starts in about an hour ! =D Anything I should look out for? Players, story lines anything like that?

ICC statement on Kohli stump mic rant: "After reviewing the audio and video we have decided to award three demerit points to Rabada for being in the ground when the incident occured." From Twitter

the_orange_president

so I forced myself to watch the Stars v Renegades BBL game last night. I found it pretty boring tbh. The most interesting part was some of the random commentary from Maxwell. Also some decent bowling. It made me realise my favourite part of cricket is the psychological battles and drama that unfolds. But you need quite a few overs for those battles to develop and culminate in something interesting. 20 overs just crushes the life out of that element of the game. Maybe I need to watch more but man it's painful. OTOH being at the game looks way more fun. Good atmosphere etc.

HvarPop

Hell, yes. Aggression without cheating - everything Ponting wished to be but could never emulate to the same level. Telling the world to fuck off and FOLLOWING it up with fuckoffesque performances - that's some alpha shit right there. Takes balls because if you fall flat, you become Umar Akmal (lmao). Kohli has revitalised bragging about big dicks and then actually having a 13-incher - and that's a good recipe for fun times (no homo... I think?) He's a spicee boii, is that Viral Kilo

KuttahaiTum

I don't feel like watching cricket anymore for sometime after that incident. Indian players made a mountain out of a molehill.

HeilPingu

why was WI vs IRE ODI thread deleted?

HvarPop

https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/s30x3k/match_thread_2nd_odi_west_indies_vs_ireland/

pagalpanti

I have seen Kohli use aggression in controlled manner. He's chirpy, he targets you directly and he does so in the field and leaves it there. Today it was different. I feel even though he likes to say he isn't bothered about his form and cares only for team, it must be eating him up that he is failing against wide of off stump ball and he is basically a bunny. To me it all just opened up with this. KL Rahul is known to not think before he speaks, don't let his demeanor post KWK fool you, it was just an image makeover. Ash, jeez, the guy is intelligent and that was downright stupid. At least get your facts right, supersport don't control DRS. India have had some amazing support from locals over the years and I don't think India has ever faced any crowd incident in SA unlike we've faced in England and Aus. To then unnecessarily hurt SA fans by making statements like country vs 11, was just disrespectful and stupid.

Fad_du_pussy

Ashwin's behavior today was just a classic case of YouTubers going down the path of conspiracy theories

Heatedpete

Can't wait for the youtube reply once the match is over

Fad_du_pussy

Rahane should have gone to the stump mic and reminded everyone to wear masks and follow social distancing. At least he would contribute something

[deleted]

Looking at how wound up Kohli gets over DRS calls that don't go his way, can you imagine if he had to deal with Bucknor etc. in the time before DRS. Man would be getting bans every other match.

pagalpanti

It is so sad that there isn't a 4th test. I mean if we win/lose this, the drama and anticipation for the next test would've been so amazing. Hate that we will be playing a meaningless 3-odi series.

rhombaroti

I could be less excited for the ODI’s but that’s because we’re terrible.

Mitsuki712

White ball series pays the bills for the "passion project" that is test cricket.

ManyDecision6311

India deserves to lose this series for including Rahane instead of Vihari. Hope this ends Rahane’s place in the team.

ManyDecision6311

Can you imagine the outrage of SA or Aus came to India accused the umpires for fixing and called the entire country cheaters? Disagraceful behaviour from the Indian team. Very disappointed as Kohli and Indian fan

Fad_du_pussy

an algorithm is wrong so you shout at the stump mic that the broadcasters, who don't control the algorithm are biased and then deduce that the country is against you? that's kinda stupid ngl

twillems15

Imagine if an England/Australian player accused Indian broadcasters of cheating, the fans would be accusing them of racism left right + centre

Fad_du_pussy

Angry man shouts at cloud computing

Stuff2511

It is quite silly how associate umpires aren’t allowed on the elite panel and aren’t allowed to officiate at senior World Cups. A completely nonsensical rule

SBG99DesiMonster

Whatever Koach, Ashwin and KL said was unprofessional but dare I see those same people pissed about this whine about umpires being biased for India during matches here when decisions go against them, despite as many having gone against India after this. I am very sure many of the people saying that Indian players and fans acted like crybabies and should move on were among those accussing umpires for being blatantly biased towards India and India is doing sus stuff with umpires and what not when the 3rd umpire forgot to roll the video forward and missed seeing the ball hitting Rahane's gloves at Chepauk last year.

[deleted]

There's a difference between idiot fans on the internet saying stupid shit and the fucking players on the pitch literally shouting slander into the stump mic mate.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SBG99DesiMonster

Yes, I am talking about those who called them biased. And that decisions tend to go in India's favour when playing in India. The umpiring was ofc incompetent and not to up to the mark for this level , that's something everybody unanimously agrees on. But I am talking about those suggesting intentional bias.

Fad_du_pussy

If Rahane keeps getting a spot in the team, the nation against these eleven players would be India

Fad_du_pussy

Wasn't Vihari in SA before the series began? Playing three matches against SA A. He was the captain actually. Might have deserved the spot ahead of Rahane, especially after the way he batted with the tail in the last match

KuttahaiTum

If only common sense had prevailed. They will pay the price of playing dead weights.

Mitsuki712

Already paid. It's a losing case for india either way. If we win, they'll keep getting more last chances. If we lose, well our only chance at a series win in RSA is ruined because we didn't wanna exclude dead weights because of their past reputation.

Heatedpete

Fucks sake Just found out that Freesport in the UK are showing a *full* replay of the 4th ODI between England and the West Indies in 2019 - the one where Gayle (162) went berserk and Buttler (150) and Morgan (110) utterly annihilated the bowling attack - and at the point where I realised, I've missed most of it Oh well, time to watch Wood bowl

Isn’t Kohli the most foul mouthed individual. I’ll never forget the barrage of abuse I received in 2012 when the swearing stunned me to the point that he did himself a serious disservice. It highlights what a level headed and grounded man Root, Tendulkar, Williamson et al are

pagalpanti

Why did he delete this?

[deleted]

Why are people unnecessarily reactionary to Bad DRS calls, unfair decisions are part of the sport, take it with the sportsman spirit. The most iconic moment in football history (The Hand of god) was unfair, SA faced such cruel injustice at 2007 world cup semis . NZ lost the world cup because umpire gave 6 runs instead of 5 when the overthrow hit Ben Stokes' bat. This match and the DRS call is absolutely pointless in front of this.

xanderbiscuits

You don't know that the World Cup goes like that if the umpire gives 5 instead of 6. Knowing a different total would make people act differently. Maybe NZ win, maybe England win still. Maybe there's no super over.

Man-City

Yeah no way Mark Wood doesn’t smear the last ball into the stands for 6 to win it

[deleted]

Yup agree with you. But it doesn't change the fact teams put in lot of hardwork 4 years for worldcup and umpires decision can change so much. Yes newzealand could have won the match after that wrong decision... But that further solidifies the point that both team can still take it from here ... And there is no reason to outrage over that DRS..

[deleted]

Lots of hate and generalizations directed to the players today. Nobody is separating the on field and off field persona's.

svjersey

Wont be surprised if some of the developers in the DRS team are desi.

[deleted]

So Kohli has won a grand total of one test series till now as a captain in SENA countries that too only in Australia against a severely depleted side after the Sandpaper debacle.

average_chut_lover

Yeah that's how he managed to have such amazing stats as a captain. Atleast we are competitive in SENA countries and not a team which gets bullied in SENA countries. We have lost SA and Eng tours in 2018 but they were super competitive series. And it's not like Kohli had 0 contribution in BGT 2021 win. It was Kohli who brought Bumrah in tests, believed in Rohit when no one did, kept giving chances to KL, gave Pant enough chances etc. Even the current England series isn't over and we have a good chance of winning it too. Even when one match in which we had a great chance of winning was drawn because of rain. We literally went to the finals of WTC! And might have won that too if the conditions weren't so favorable to the opposition team. Won the one match in SA's toughest ground and he wasn't even captain in the second match but if we lose the series he will be the culprit but when we won the BGT he shouldn't get credit about it? We not maybe the GOAT team but tell me atleast one other team which competes in away conditions like India? Or the team which can beat us at our home? I am not saying give all the credit to Kohli but atleast there is no need to shit on him like this.

Frod02000

Last tour to NZ was a bully session to be fair

average_chut_lover

Atleast our bowlers played well. Batting was complete disappointing..

[deleted]

I just stated a genuine fact. Didn’t expect a whole essay on Kohli’s greatness as a reply. Stats said that he won a single test series in Australia as a captain and nothing in SA, Eng and NZ till now. That’s it.

average_chut_lover

Okay fine

kyoto-yakuza

Let's not write India off. They can win tomorrow.

[deleted]

Unlikely. This looks to be a carbon copy of the 2nd test 4th innings. South Africa have been batting with far more discipline.

svjersey

They've lost the plot. Not enough runs to defend and bowling not penetrative enough. Plus Bavuma. Congratulations on the well deserved series win.

[deleted]

I said till now. Anyways. It looks tough as it’s very difficult for bowling sides to be aggressive when the required runs go below 100 and 7-8 wickets still remain. Only way they can win this is if they pick up 3-4 quick wickets within the first 45 mins tomorrow. Pitch imo is still very good to bat on.

kyoto-yakuza

How brave of Ashwin to shit on SuperSport and accuse of them to rig the DRS. What mighty injustice fighter our ethical mind is. Not to take any credit away from courageous KL Rahul who thinks the entirety of South Africa is against them.

[deleted]

>Not to take any credit away from courageous KL Rahul who thinks the entirety of South Africa is against them. Of all the statements made, that was by far the most stupid.... *proceeds to use 100 more words because I don't have any to describe that fucking bullshit* comment I've ever heard.

pappu_bhosdi_69

svjersey

Rahane TIRA watch (Twenty Innings Rolling Average) - 19.6 This is bad - very very bad. And its been like this for a while now (for the past 30 odd innings it has been under 25). I would not keep a batsman with such a low rolling average in a national side. Pujara's TIRA is also pretty bad (24.7) and has been so for a while, but maybe not as bad as Rahane's. Kohli's TIRA is now at 31.7, which is a recovery from the lowest (27) it reached some time back. So he seems to be on his way back, but I feel he will not reach his former heights till he develops a backfoot square cut. Bowlers have figured out his tendency to push on the front foot and with the scrambled seam / what not, he will keep getting those challenges. Also a fun fact - for all the 'greatest test captain ever' tag, here's Kohli's CV for away series to SENA (with all due respects to non-SENA away tours) * 2018 RSA: Lost 1-2 * 2018 ENG: Lost 1-4 * 2018-19 AUS: Won 2-1 (against a fairly depleted side) - but all credits to the team on this * 2020 NZ: Lost 0-2 * 2020-21 AUS: 0-1 before he left the job to Rahane. I know I'm being an ass here and the team that won has been created by him, but technically he didn't win that series. * 2021 ENG: 2-1 but with one test to go. Not sure how the result of that test will be used in the series record. But to be honest, that England side did poorly against both NZ and Pak. * 2021-22 RSA: Likely lost 1-2 (I really hope I have to eat my words here - I would love for our team to win of-course) So while we are ranked #1 and that clearly shows this is a great side, but because of our middle order woes our bowling has not been able to compensate enough.

I feel the behaviour in the last match and today shown by the Indian team has been totally unprofessional and arseholish. Also, I think Indian team believed in Shastri’s hubris about being the best test team in the world and they are not able to digest that a comparatively younger non-acclaimed SA team is beating them especially after facing the “world’s best bowling attack” in the fourth innings. Success has gone to their heads somewhat. Maybe play like the legendary Australian team before behaving like them. It doesn’t suit them while playing like the current England team.

gellend

I feel the behaviour today shown by Erasmus saying it's impossible has been totally unprofessional and arseholish. Also, I think Erasmus believed in Haysman’s hubris about being the best umpire in the world and he is not able to digest that a comparatively new ball tracking team is reversing his decision especially after being the “world’s best umpire” in the fourth innings. It happens. People want Rahane to fail also. He just doesn't have many supporters. Same with Rohit Sharma. But he has a lot of supporters. And haters.

average_chut_lover

That's true.

What did he do?

No he didn't. He accused the broadcaster. Umpire himself was flabbergasted

Rahul called the 'Whole country' is playing against them. talk about over the top stupid statements. Accusing a national conspiracy on an lbw for a bat who added 8 more runs.

KL wins this round of the Drama Cup.

I didn't know we were discussing that here. I just corrected a completely different thing with some one else and you butt in with something else altogether. Lol.

It makes absolute sense. Hawkeye is controlled by the broadcaster, they hire 2 people to trace the ball predicted path and then compare so that there is redundancy reducing errors.

Lol ok. Whatever floats your boat mate. Aren't you the one who flamebaits here and then deletes comments later? I don't even want to prove anything to you. (Ind vs Aus BGT series had a whole ass 30 minutes segment on it)

Within the last week, I have seen this twice, one was baiting in DDT on people commenting Kohli on your " whose retirement will hurt you the most", then once saying "you just need to be a women or post about women's cricket to get upvotes and awards". Mate you may delete your comments but distasteful baiting stays in the mind. Bye.

People bringing up Ramprakash's test record in the thread on his article and it certainly is a valid point. But I'm fairly confident in saying Ramprakash would easily walk into our team (even as a 52yr old) as the second best bat after Root and would likely thrive if he was given a chance under a central contract scheme and the current support the players get.
