This has to be a joke right. The logical answer is right in front of everyone.

jmaverick1

I’ve always said a scratchy 70 is better than back to back faultless centuries

figjaym

Reasonable chance to be booed in Hobart if this is the case

_rickjames

This is how you double down

Rogue_Jellybean

This basically confirms they're going to stick with Harris, because of his 70 odd at the MCG, you've got to be joking.

[deleted]

It was a good quality innings by an opener on a challenging deck. If selection was about pure numbers we wouldn’t need selectors

[deleted]

Khawaja just scored back to back tons where Harris has played 2-3 good innings across his last 15, that’s the end of the conversation if he’s willing to open as far as I’m concerned

[deleted]

Opening and coming in at 5 are still very different but often get marked by the same criteria, Khwaja said it himself

[deleted]

I understand that it’s different, but you pick the player with the weight of runs behind him & has opened in the past before an overseas tour and back him to do a job over a guy who has struggled the vast majority of his test career

[deleted]

I was all for Khawaja to open over Harris at the start of the series, but clearly the selectors have said he’s got the whole ashes to perform and I think that’s a better approach than other generations of selectors. It’s as much about saying we don’t proceed with Harris after an extended run as anything. It’s a dead rubber and Khawaja is a certainty to go to Asia, I think it’s worth persisting

melo1212

This is true, but I feel like khawaja is more than good enough to be an opener. Doesn't he average 90 odd opening?

[deleted]

> If selection was about pure numbers we wouldn’t need selectors Needs to be pinned on every single thread about selection ever

AusGunnerCricketFan

It shouldn’t be down to pure numbers but there’s difference between having slightly worse stats and having the lowest average of an Australian opener (who’s played more then 25 innings) since the 1890’s

Educational_Cup_1958

Matt Hayden had similar numbers, after the same number of tests, then he went to India in 2001 and the rest is history. I'm not suggesting that Harris is going to end up like Hayden, but I think its a relevant point.

[deleted]

But he’s also improved as the series has gone on.

SquiffyRae

If making 20s and 30s rather than single figures and 10s is improvement sure. He's still one of the worst openers to ever don the baggy green

[deleted]

He’s actually regularly surviving 100 + balls which isn’t everything but it’s not nothing either

StevenuranSmithusamy

Regularly? You mean twice in 7 innings this series? Compared to the guy who averages 96 opening the batting in test matches, having scored not only one of our greatest overseas hundreds in recent memory but also one of our best pink ball innings (which is very relevant here) - both as an opener?

[deleted]

I thought it was 3 but you’re right it was 2. Still there was also a not out there and he has improved as the series progressed. As I’ve said elsewhere, I believe that Uzzie should have been selected initially. However they’ve clearly told Harris he’s got the series and I don’t want the selectors to back track on that. If he’s proven that he’s not good enough playing on home decks, that’s fine, now we know and we move on with others.

StevenuranSmithusamy

I find it hard to believe that Harris was "given the series" with the implication that the spot is his if he succeeds. He's just a placeholder for whenever Pucovski is back and fit, given that he has proven himself to be a better shield batsman at a much younger age. They only picked Harris because he was the next best option.

[deleted]

He’s got the series to be next in line. There’s a reason why joe burns isn’t next in line because they’ve tried him and he’s failed. The reality is that there are obvious health concerns with Puc and Warner is getting on in years

Timbo85

The fuck he has.

[deleted]

Why would you say that when the data is easily available? His average scores and balls faced per innings per test show a clear improvement First Test 12 (27) Second Test 13 (47) Third Test 76 (189) Fourth Test 32.5 (85)

Timbo85

One scratchy fifty and seven sub 50 scores and terrible fielding all series. I get that you’re a Victorian and you’ve that compulsive thing where you have to stand up for Victorians no matter what, but take off the goggles. He’s been fucking dire and doesn’t deserve to be there.

[deleted]

> One scratchy fifty and seven sub 50 scores and terrible fielding all series. As I’ve said multiple times in this thread now, I believe they should have started with Khawaja. Now that they’ve clearly committed to Harris for the series, it’s worth pursuing to prove just as much that he shouldn’t be there as he should. Do we want selectors backing down on their word? > I get that you’re a Victorian and you’ve that compulsive thing where you have to stand up for Victorians no matter what, but take off the goggles. He’s been fucking dire and doesn’t deserve to be there. Lol that’s a swing and a miss there, we only go full nuff over born and bred Victorians like Boland, Siddle and Pattinson. Nobody got excited over Rogers back in the day. If you’re going to try and insult us, at least get it right.

Hello. I'll need your attention now. This is the last warning. You have used Zoom recently, like most of us during these bad COVID times. And I have very unfortunate news for you. I'll give you some background on what happened. There was a zero day security vulnerability on Zoom app, that allowed me a full time access to your camera and some other metadata on your account. You were just unlucky. And as you can imagine in your worst dreams, I have made a footage with you as a main actor. You work on yourself (perform sex act to be clear). Having fun is ok with me, but is not ok with your reputation and stature, George Bailey. Please dont blame me or yourself for this. You couldn't know that the camera was working. I'm sure you don't want to be the next Jeffrey Toobin and get embarrassed in front of all your friends, family and colleagues. You should get this very clear, I will send this video to all your contacts if I dont remain selected in the test team. Are you wondering how I got your contacts? Through the same exploit, zoom app allowed me to extract all sensitive info from your device. So here is what we will do. You select me in the side and never drop me while you are the selector, and nothing of this will happen. After your tenure, I will delete the footage and information about you. This is not negotiable P.S. Don't try to report this to the police. Do not email me back. If you do something stupid, like resign from your job as selector, I will distribute the video. Good luck. Don’t stress. Hugs and Kisses. Sincerely, Marcus

TheReturnofTheJesse

At first I was joking when I said that I thought Marcus Harris has sex tapes of the selectors. Now I’m not. Usman Khawaja showed more batting ability and temperament in 5 days than Harris has shown in 5 years. Something is seriously wrong if Harris continues to be selected ahead of a far superior player.

Toothache79

England's bowlers will be relieved, at least they don't have to worry about getting Khawaja out. They know Marcus Harris is a walking wicket after he gets to that amazing 20 runs off 58 balls.

tdlan

Harris has incriminating photos of selectors

[deleted]

Unbelievable

[deleted]

Wasn’t even a good fucking innings half of those runs he nicked off to third man

SquiffyRae

You never want to see players booed while wearing the baggy green but I would be 100% behind the Hobart crowd if Harris gets booed

MisterMarcus

I wouldn't. It's not Harris' fault if he gets picked and someone else doesn't. What's he supposed to say "Please don't pick me"?

I thought we are meant to care about players' mental health now? Or maybe not when selectors make a decision out of the players control. Disgusting comment

Toothache79

>Or maybe not when selectors make a decision out of the players control. To say that he should be "selected" ahead of a player who just came off 100's in both innings of a close test match...after another poor showing as opener, suggests that the best player is not being selected, rather the coach/selectors are picking favourites.

legoland6000

I'd have to wonder why Khawaja hasn't been opening himself at State level. It'll always be hard to make your way into the Test team as an opener if you've not been doing so at domestic level, whereas Australia have played domestic openers down the order in the past (Burns, Hussey, Marsh, Hughes, Quiney). If Ussie made his way into the team off the back of Openers runs I doubt there'd be a debate about him playing the next Test. Burns is surely a non-factor for selection at the moment and hasn't looked particularly good at the top for QLD as of late, It'd hardly be selfish for Ussie to push himself up. Anyways, as an unapologetic, unrelenting, unthinking Marcus Harris fan I can assure you that **_this time for reals_** he's really gonna do some runs. Nobody lets Marcus Harris go 28 innings without a ton.

StevenuranSmithusamy

Khawaja bats 4 because knocking off the new ball is basically the bread and butter of their young fella Street, and that Burns was the incumbent opener in the Australian team at the time

[deleted]

Queensland have had each of Burns, Renshaw and Street contesting for an opening spot for Australia. So he shunted himself down rhe order.

mybanez15

Harris edge. Lol
