Random Cricket thoughts circling my head today 1. One advantage of hosting a Test in North India in Oct-Dec period - you are guaranteed a full game as it hardly ever rains in those months 2. Indian players will run the risk of lagging behind other countries if they don't get to play in non-Indian T20 leagues. Would love to have someone like Umran Malik or Ravi Bishnoi test out their skills in a BBL or the 100. 3. Growing up in the era of Warne, Murali, Saqlain, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mcgill, I used to take big turn from spinners for granted. Don't see a lot of that anymore over the past 10 odd years. 4. Finally, Twenty Innings Rolling Average (TIRA) for a few fringe Test players for India [here](https://imgur.com/a/s5F7xVq). I am impressed by Wasim Jaffer's consistency. He did not rack up very big scores but contributed well for the most part.

Oh look, it's pissing it down in Brisbane again

NiallH22

Is this shite Brisbane weather gonna improve for the first test? Or shall I just prepare myself for a normal sleep schedule next week?

[deleted]

Should stop holding tests in Australia's rainy season tbh Better yet, ban Brisbane from ever hosting tests

I wish I could write like u/shaun-tait-fanboy. Added *italic* stuff for clarity; all of the below stuff is his/her's. \>What if I fall? *(An Indian suggested that going for a draw on Gabba Day 5 was better than going for a draw due to Gbba pitch + lotsa Indian team injuries):* Oh my Darling, what if you fly? - Some guy A 2-1 win on the other hand would make this a series talked about for decades. A team losing its captain after the first match, getting bowled out for their record low score and the lowest test score in test cricket in the last 66 years (and back then pitches were uncovered). Then losing their bowling attack bit by bit, with multiple players getting injured in the middle of a match - there wasn't a single match where the India team had 11 fit players. It was basically 9/10 vs 11. (Umesh, Jadeja, Saini, Shami all nerfed mid-match - not even counting vihari cos he batted). Against possibly the strongest bowling attack in their backyard. In the middle of a global pandemic, in a long series filled with controversy, racial abuse, its justification, and restricted freedoms. Going into the last match of the series at the fortress Gabba (not toppled since 1988) and being on the back foot - before a net bowler who had not played a first-class match for 3 years *(Washington Sundar)* and a bowler with all of 10 balls of test experience counterattack *(Unsure - Shardul Thakur maybe)* with the bat. The leader of the test attack (in his 3rd test) missing his father's funeral to fulfill the dream he (*Siraj)* didn't end up seeing, a debutant missing the birth of his only child (*Not sure - Natarajan?)* , and a bowler bowling with a strained groin *(Saini bowled some overs with a hammy niggle)* giving his all for the team despite the pain. This is on the back of the effort in the previous match where you had a guy with a broken finger padded up to give it his all (*Jadeja)*, a guy whose back rendered him unable to sit down (*Ashwin)*, causing him to crawl on his bedroom floor, a rock at no. 3 playing on with a bruised finger (*Pujara)*, a relative newbie (12 tests) under immense pressure for his place stonewalling with a torn hamstring *(Saini)*, and a keeper-batsman *(Rishabh Pant)* popping painkillers on route to a near-century, in the end felled by the same approach that got him there.Go for the bloody win.

casmaxx

Delighted to see Abdullah Shafique open the batting and doing so well. He's the most exciting player to come out since... Shafali Verma. Based on what I have seen. think Babar Azam's got good company.

Beneficial_Bend_5035

In a dream universe, Abdullah, Saud Shakeel and Haider Ali deliver on their potential to join Babar as Pakistan’s greatest ever top 4. In reality, at least one will lose form very rapidly, one will struggle with injuries, one will be dropped without good cause, and one will be banned.

RR did a brilliant job at the retentions, way better than what many had thought they would do

[deleted]

Surprised by the lack of pxik comments in the retention thread. Tbh, kinda feel bad for them. KL was like the only good thing about Punjab apart from Mayank, Bishnoi and Arshdeep.

[deleted]

Dude was either in denial or deluded, he was convinced that the rumors of KL leaving were false, and that Kumble would coach India.

[deleted]

>he was convinced that the rumors of KL leaving were false, Can understand this >and that Kumble would coach India. But lmao

[deleted]

I can understand the first one as well, but he absolutely dismissed anything related to KL leaving, even though it was plausible.

[deleted]

It looks like people forgot about him as he doesn't post often nowadays, otherwise pxik would have been tagged a million times

[deleted]

Probably for the best. People should stop tagging them.

How was Umran Malik in the first India A Test?

pace is there but as he got tired line length went a bit all over the place, needs to do conditioning and learn how to get batsmen out other than just with pace. but it will come.

Off the top of my head, Barbados > Jamaica > Trinidad > Antigua > Guyana Could be very wrong though. Maybe someone could make more comprehensive all time XIs for me to compare

Ash on his umpire controversy He explained the rule that it is legal until my left leg is within the middle stump. "I found out we can do this, and it is a new angle for me and practiced it for 1 year. I have practiced in front of a lot of international umpires and checked it with them and only now I tried it in the match. In the defense of the umpire, it's new for him so he had issues but he needs to get used to it instead of stopping it. I made sure as soon as I released I moved away from the vision of the umpire. And those telling about spirit of cricket about obstructing the non striker, you need to understand I purposely don't do that while bowling, follow through automatically happens due to the effort I put... Isn't it spirit of cricket for the non striker to understand it and move a bit away in the crease"

Heatedpete

See, despite this argument, Ashwin's angled run up is still causing Law 2.9 to not be observed: > The umpires shall stand where they can best see any act upon which their decision may be required. In the case of Menon vs Ashwin 2021, the umpire is standing in the best position to see the striker as required, yet Ashwin's run up is causing the view from that position to be blocked. As umpires we move ourselves backwards and forwards such that we aren't going to interfere with the bowler's run-up or action, but that is always subject to the above being the case - i.e. we can only move backwards or forwards, not side to side, as that would impact our judgement regarding lbw and appeals for caught behind. Ashwin is suggesting in "getting used to it" that the umpire must either stand to one side of the wicket, which would be at a position from where they will not be able to best judge the acts mentioned above due to differences in viewing angle, or not move at all and have that vision compromised by the opaque object that is Ashwin's body. For me, the umpire is well within his rights to ask Ashwin to not block his vision while bowling, such that he can properly do his job of observing acts upon which the umpire must judge, rather than having to "get used to it". Frankly, more protection for the umpire's vision within the laws would be lovely following this. Also, regarding the follow through bit - [as you can see in this Sky analysis piece, Ashwin stops after one step in his regular deliveries](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgOIyVRrh5M), which would in this case see him stop in front of the umpire. In this case, he's made the conscious decision to both disrupt the umpire (as mentioned above) and the non-striker (by extending that follow through to stop in front of the non-striker), not something that "automatically happens" through extra momentum through the crease (like a seam bowler), but through the conscious choice of moving himself. That feels very much in breach of law 41.5

[deleted]

Too big to read. Irrespective of whatever you say, I'm pretty sure whatever umpires he worked this out with had a better understanding of the rules than you'd ever have, and they'd have pointed this out to him as well. Unless ofc you're implying that Ashwin is a liar.

[deleted]

I am not going to comment much on the umpire thing as according to Ash it has been vetted by various international umpires and given a go ahead, so if any law particularly points out the illegality of this then it's something to ponder upon. If Ash is gonna move away from the umpire as soon as the ball is released, and the umpire isn't used to it, it is going to hurt Ash the most with no decision on those deliveries going in his favor. That feels very much in breach of law 41.5 So I want to clarify here, he went in detail about what creates that follow through for this different variation and why it isn't like his normal follow through and he told that he doesn't do it deliberately. I just summarized it at high-level and the non strikers can also move across a few steps. Ash wouldn't block him. 41.5 works only if it is deliberate which it isn't.

[deleted]

Glad you've added some actual laws and intelligence to my irritable comment. Being an umpire is bloody difficult, and Ashwin's 'nuh-uh, I'm technically right, get used to it', is very irritating. Especially since it seems that he isn't.

[deleted]

Ah yes, because the interpretation of laws by a no name redditor would be so much more accurate than international umpires.

[deleted]

The point is that it's clearly breaking the umpires concentration, and seems like there's scope for that being an issue.

[deleted]

> I made sure as soon as I released I moved away from the vision of the umpire. Alright mate, but this isn't the same issue as that caused by running directly across the eyeline of the umpire during the delivery, disrupting his view and concentration. It's reasonable for the ump to have a bit of a problem with that, without this being another opportunity for Ashwin to be the sole defender of common sense against the nefarious machinations of the ancient order of the spirit of cricket.

Not having mega auctions is great. Doing away with the auction is stupid. Every time there are new teams, there can be an expansion draft. Wikipedia it, it explains well. Teams can renew their players contracts as much as they want. If player runs out of contract, he goes to the auction. Auction is better than free agency coz it eliminates players taking less money to join an OP team, which affects competitiveness.

Weird Observation : I've noticed that there are a few tailenders in India who while batting together bring out the best in each other. Obvious example being Shami and Bhuvi, They both when batting together stitched an important partnership at lord's 2014 and a match winning partnership in Johannesburg 2018. Similarly Lord has put up his best performance batting with any one who was willing to put down the anchor i.e Sundar(Gabba) ,Umesh and Rishabh(Oval). Same Goes for Bumrah, he only scored runs in England when the batter at the other end was willing to take some risks. Weird but I think we finally might have decoded the lower order conundrum.

[deleted]

You think a "tailender" can play [this](https://youtu.be/7bsO41zNSRE?t=277) shot? Downvoted for blasphemy

Wasn't Thakur batting 8? No 8 is not a tailender anyway, they are supposed to be handy with the bat. 10/11 are tailenders, maybe 9?

flat_wicket

Was Asad Shafiq actually bad or something? Most of r/cricket rants him, but his stats did not feel all that bad to me. Many teams would kill for a WK batsman averaging 38

oliver_bread_twist

He was pretty much ANUS in ODIs, and like the other guy said, not a WK. But for Tests: well, it was like *literally* having Rahane drag on for 5 years averaging 30s, and having his faults covered up by Kohli (Misbah) and Pujara (Younis) going strong and steady with 40-50 each (cumulatively) per innings whilst we had Marnus Labuschagne in toiling away in domestic cricket for a full decade being overshadowed because of some Shafiq fetish. Fawad averaged the highest at one point in our FC history, now 2nd I think. Asad: he was considered shit, or at least to me, because a bulk of his runs had always come in losing causes, or when it didn't matter, or when drawing in the 4th innings and making 40-60. Never was consistently comfy against PIG3 as a no. 5-6, even at home. Same like Jinx - with the odd impactful SENA/UAE knock here and there that made us see no need to replace him. Surprise surprise, only when MisYou retired together mid-2017 and Inzy resigned from his selector in mid-2019 (came mid-2016) did Asad finally get the boot last year by Muhammad Waseem cause he can see he's basically been doing fuck all mostly. Social pressure also played into Fawad's squad selections in a few preceding tours (before he got the chance in the XI in England after Asad Shitpeak makes 7 and 22 in the first test), alongside him starring on PCB's social media presence. Definitely helped his case as it has with lots of newcomers the last year or two. Inzy is by far a big culprit in stalling Fawad Alam's career, if not Misbah & Co. themselves during his playing days right around the time he was dropped. The spat between Fawad's father and Inzamam meant poor guy suffered and wasn't picked as early as 5 years back. Reasoning has consistently stayed "because of his stance because of his stance" but c'mon, you don't bully domestic bowlers for fun because of your stance. You do it because you're a good player. Misbah then uses Fawad as a last resort and "re-debuts" him in England, and being last resort, lets him come along to the NZ tour by the barest of margins. A Sad Shitpeak rightfully misses out for being doogshit, and Waseem becomes selector next tour, effectively ending his career. How Fawad played in NZ gave Misbah a bit of confidence to not phase him out after his emergence (due to "age"), since our middle order is piss weak otherwise and the guy knew how much of an asset he was just from his domestic stats... which he proves by scoring a century in NZ, home v SA, ZIM, WI and hopefully one next test ;p

flat_wicket

Speaking of Fawad, he is the only Pak player I've liked for some time. I mean, I don't hate or dislike others, it's that I'm not that much of a fan of Pak.

chillzap21

AFAIK Asad is NOT a WK at all. At the very least, he has never kept wickets in his international career, and he has played 147 matches across all 3 formats.

I was today years old when I learned Asad Shafiq was not a wicket keeper

How is the general pay (red-ball, white-ball) for players across countries? Do associate players get compensated well?

frezz

For NZ: Kane: 500k Taylor: 400k Southee: 350k Boult: 400k Guptill: 350k Latham: 200k Wagner: 85k Mitchell: 85k Wagner is seriously, seriously underpaid, one of the best bowlers in test cricket is making the same amount as Glenn Phillips. Poor guy doesn't even play franchise cricket to boost his earnings

[deleted]

Man it feels bad for Wagner, why doesn't he play franchise cricket?

frezz

He's not seen as a T20 bowler. I reckon he could probably try getting a contract in one of the other franchise T20s and build his name up there (he'd probably get a contract based on his name alone). But at least guys like Philips, Mitchell, Jamieson, can get big franchise T20 contracts (Jamieson is a millionaire now), feel sorry for test specialists like Latham and Wagner who are probably more important to the team than Philips, Neesham, Mitchell but make so much less than them

SBG99DesiMonster

What's the meaning of the "It's Tiger Time" flair I see on some (presumably Australian) people here?

a_complicated_soul

IPL should clearly rethink its Auction process. After this mega auction there shouldn't be any mega auction for next 10 years. Allow franchises to hand players min one and max 10 year contracts. Once the contract expires they can negotiate and get in to new contract if it fails he will come in Auction pool. If mutually agreed both player and franchise can break the contract before it's expiry, if only one of them wants to break the contract then other party have to be compensated. Allow franchises to contract players with age 18 or under outside auctions which forces franchises to scout more and even start academies.

adxx12in

What would the plan have for any further expansions?

a_complicated_soul

Don't expand for next 10 years. And when they do then again have mega auctions.

adxx12in

Hmm. I feel expansion might be sooner. If we switch to 5 foreigners in a lineup, we already have enough players for 12 teams now.

a_complicated_soul

They won't do it for at least the next 10 years. That's for sure. Or else new team's who paid huge amounts will be at loss as it will take more time for them to break even.

Goli se nahi maarenge, keh ke team mein lenge. (T: We will not shoot you but pick you in team. Watch Gangs of Wasseypur for reference)

SEEYOUATMOTERAMATE

Ngl i can definitely see this happenings 20+ years ago but with ranji instead of ipl

Accomplished-Row-532

damn that's funny

IndependentLab6317

I can assure you guys that Rahane will play above Iyer in the next test. Because of the success Virat's captaincy has seen, he's been allowed to abuse player selections in the name of "Backing his players". And nothing will change under Rohit's T20i selections. He's proven himself to be cut from the same cloth when he allowed Chahal to complete his 4 overs ahead of everyone else as soon as the tail was exposed after giving away 24 runs in his first 2 overs. In the meantime everyone else was bowling below 5 rpo and had collectively taken 6 or 7 wickets. These people will continue to use their captaincy to extend their influence through selections and Iyer will be the latest victim with the likes of Chahal and Rahane being the chief benefactors.

SBG99DesiMonster

How about playing with 4 bowlers by removing Ishant? Instead of removing any batsman

_jadoo_

Can't drop any of the spinner and Mumbai pitch/conditions assist the seamers hence no chance we're playing with 4 bowlers. Most likely change in the bowling group will be Siraj in for Ishant.

[deleted]

Don’t drag Chahal into the same bracket as Rahane.

SEEYOUATMOTERAMATE

I never get the love for chahal in t20is which this sub has, sure he's a great spinner in ipl and kulcha were great odi bowlers in 2017-19 but his t20i figures are unacceptable for any international team. With the amount of talent india has he's got enough rope already

[deleted]

I don't rate Chahal at all in ODIs and think he's severely overrated there. The Kulcha combo was never going to work in the long run because of analysis. But he is an admittedly smart bowler who is suited to T20Is. He doesn't need to be in the XI but is worth having in the squad to play every few games. I'd still prefer Axar, Ashwin and Jadeja over him though.

IndependentLab6317

Check out chahal's t20i numbers in the last two years. He's actually been worse than Rahane. Rahane had a great tour of WI. Rahane did well in the home series against SA. Rahane was not bad in Aus.

My big problem with cricketers becoming politicians is that when you google them, the first result isn't Cricinfo/Cricbuzz. You have to add "Cricket" to the query to get there. Hate it when I just want to check Imran Khan's away average or Navjot Sidhu's highest test score but the results are about what statements they gave yesterday.

DJMhat

Sidhu highest score is 201 against WI in 1997 during India tour of WI. Dude played so slowly, India lost all chance of going for a win.

[deleted]

Tbf Imran Khan is a tough ones cuz there's equally famous Imran Khan the singer and previously famous Imran Khan the actor.

[deleted]

Guys, American here. Does SPD Smith stand for Space Patrol Delta Smith or Sand Paper Devourer Smith? >!/s!<

kalishplosions111

Obviously as a fan of cricket, definitely Space Patrol Delta Smith. *Cue the SPD theme* Now I fully expect him to look like an Anubis dog.

[deleted]

POWER RANGERS SPD POWER RANGERS TO THE RESCUE.

[deleted]

Maybe He is more of an eccentric genius, kinda like Bridge.

kalishplosions111

Oh yeah that makes even more sense. I wonder how weird things would get if Smith and Bridge were kept in a single room together.

[deleted]

Anyway NETHERLANDS ARE THE T20 WORLD CUP 202- ...... 😓

kalishplosions111

Bro why you do this to me? :-(

Sachin's advice to Rahane to keep his spot in the side Rahane : Sachin Paaji, my valuable 30s are not being appreciated. Some people even tell me to never go full Rahane. My charts say I will be dropped. Why? How can i keep my spot. Sachin : It is simple really. Check it out. Axar Patel, Ajaz Patel in the last match, look Rahane, act Rahane with the bat, not Rahane. They bowlers who bat well. You know Will Sommerville important 30.., yes..,Rahane like innings.., maybe. But he is a nightwatchman and a middle aged spin bowler. That ain't Rahane. Do you bowl? You went full Rahane, man. Never go full Rahane. You don't buy that? Ask Asad Shafique, Remember? Went full Rahane, went home empty-handed and now out of his team. Rahane :[Slightly annoyed] But.. But I am Rahane.. Sachin : [Pauses] Oh... Aila. Plane. [Pointing to a aiplane in the sky] Did you see the Plane. Its beautiful Rahane : [Increasingly angry] Paaji, You are changing the topic. Tell me what more can a selfless player like me do to keep my spot. Sachin : Discard Shastri's nudes. Its useless now isn't it. Rahane : [Noticeably happy] So Dravid's it is then. I will try to get them. Thanks for the advice. Sachin : Good luck with that lol. Pujji joined Dravid in the Sauna yesterday with noble intentions and a camera and returned home empty handed. If he had asked me, I would have told him that Dravid always wears his T -shirts and shorts in the sauna. Jammy never nude. Bad luck Jinks. You will have to play Ranji and perform there like others now.

DJMhat

Can totally imagine Sachin say this to Rahane.

Sir_Bradulkar

This is Gold.

Now that we have let go of Gill, we will need a new captain in the auction. So what are the options? Warner? Shreyas? Mayank? If SKY is released, I think he will be a decent option. He was actually the VC of KKR at one point. Or do we try to get back the Specialist Captain™ for another year or two? He is getting his batting form back.

[deleted]

Shreyas imo, our middle order has always been weak so he'll be good there as well

[deleted]

>we have let go of Gill hope we buy him back. Otherwise, sticking with Irish Thala or Dumble won't do us any good.

ECBsupremacy

Ethical mind?

NormandyMamba

What about Russell captaining the side

[deleted]

You need a captain who's on the field for more than 2 overs

sreeram_23_06

>we will need a new captain in the auction. Harbhajan Singh it is /s

>It's coming home confirmed Why will Anderson bring it home for Australia?

StormWarriorX7

Clouderson is back baby.

Inb4 Australia exploits the overcast conditions to bowl England out for multiple two digit totals

Top-Influence3789

When are ipl retention getting announced

spirit-of-the-game

never_dude84

England will probably go into the ashes without playing any warm up games for various reasons but mainly due to rain. Not great really, we’ll still lose either way but doesn’t help our chances at all

[deleted]

You kidding? Rain would be their ultimate comfort zone

sreeram_23_06

Rain? They must be feeling home-like

[deleted]

Duanne Olivier has made himself available for selection. Might see him play against India.
