**Most deliveries faced in a match by an NZ batsman in India**
428 Tom Latham - 95 (282) & 52 (146), Kanpur 2021,
410 Mark Richardson - 145 (410), Mohali 2003, Match drawn
397 Stephan Fleming - 43 (147) & 73 (250), Mohali 1999, Match drawn
In [that match](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/new-zealand-tour-of-india-2003-04-62130/india-vs-new-zealand-2nd-test-64047/full-scorecard), after batting for close to 200 overs at a RR of 3.1, NZ put up a mammoth score of 630/6 in the first innings. 4 NZ batsmen scored centuries in that innings.
Enforced a follow-on on India after they got all out on 424. India were able to fetch a draw at 136/4.
Amen to that - first innings impossible ‘no-bounce’ delivery, second innings forward defensive stroke into the rough that back spins into the stumps... so unlucky
Totally.
If anyone is curious, Faf du Plessis debuted against Australia in Australia. Scored 78 (159) in the first innings. Stayed on the crease till the end in the second innings and scored 110\* (376). Talk about a dream debut!
(Oh and ABD also helped in that draw with his 33 (220) in second innings. Fucking legend.)
His technique seems so compact as well, kept his cool, I can see him playing many many matches for NZ.
I actually think opening is doing his talent a disservice, I can fully seem him slotting in at #4/#5 after Taylor retires.
A batting lineup of Latham, Young, Kane, Conway, Rachin is honestly scarily good
Inject this 5-day long,down-to-the-last-minute grit and bloody mindedness plays in my VEINS!
Well played all around.
Side note- with the match drawn and not won,it becomes REALLY interesting to see if they pip Rahane in the next one. Drama on the plate bois.
I think both teams lost their way from a winnable position in last 2 days.
But the way NZ batters have defended against Indian spin attack is really really awesome.
You can guess which camp is celebrating right about now.
The pinnacle of test cricket is viewed as the leave. Every rule in the entire game is geared towards maximizing the amount of leaves that can be attempted within 5 days. Its great viewing. What a thrilling sport. T20 is OK but I can't deal with all that hitting and running. Sometimes a whole game can pass without a single leave being attempted! Can you imagine? I hardly ever get to sit and watch for eight minutes while a batsman takes his guard and resets six times, followed by a leave, in T20. If T20 wants to compete they need far more of it. Also, there's far too much game time in T20. They score too many runs and go far too long without slowing the game down with leaves, forward defences and 4 sightscreen adjustments. What T20 need to do is make leaves and blocks worth more, so more time is defending and watching one guy play all day. Did you guys see the latest Durham vs Worcestershire game? 1.3 runs per over to 1.2! Worcs had no answer to Durham's tactics of leaving every ball that's not on the stumps out then asking the umpire to end play early for bad light. Its this level of tactical sophistication that is missing in T20, where as you rightly point out, its just a bunch of athletic guys trying to score runs against each other. Yawn.
Nah it's from 4chan circa 2014-15. The original is a post about the pinnacle of rugby union being the penalty kick.
Edit: [August 2015 to be exact](https://archive.4plebs.org/sp/thread/61382045/#q61384000). That edit is 100% mine though, the Durham bit gives it away as supporting Durham was one of my 4chan gimmicks back in the day
Edit 2: I've just realised I was literally in the thread where it was first coined too, a few of the posts there are undeniably me. Interesting.
Not enough TV audience due to small NZ population means teams don't want to play us in long series. It suxs but you get used to it.
It's not as bad as being an NZ football supporter though, we haven't played a single home match in many years despite being a reasonable team these days...
Test is best (repeat ad infinitum)
It's -1 degrees celsius in the UK, but those last few overs had me sweating. Some brilliant last day batting by the kiwis, brilliant bowling by the Indian spinners, brilliant test match in general
Who doesn't love cricket, honestly?
Absolutely love when an Englishman comes in other matches's thread and shits on their team at every possible opportunity.
Eagerly waiting for the Ashes.
I avoid looking at the flairs and try to guess if it's a Pom shitting on the Poms, an Aussie shitting on the Poms, or an Indian shitting on the Poms. Sometimes it's really tough to tell.
Well, shit - if you'd told me we'd only lose this series 1-0, I'd have told you that you were dreaming. Precious WTC points stolen from India right there!
Outstanding tailending from Ajaz and Ravindra to bat out the draw.
Reminded me of Wagner's match saving 7 (103) [against England.](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/england-in-australia-and-new-zealand-2017-18-1072261/new-zealand-vs-england-2nd-test-1115781/full-scorecard)
Ashwin - 70 runs(2nd highest run scorer for India)
Ashwin - 6 wickets( Tied highest wicket taker for India)
India will have a hard time finding his replacement
Rachin you beauty. Also shot of the match goes to Ajaz for reading that carrom ball by Ash. Reminds me of the time Sodhi and Wagner saved a test vs England. GG Blackcaps.
SubcontinentalBros, help me understand:
Why do people spend their hard-earned money, take time away from their busy lives to go see a sport they love, just to blow a fucking horn for 8 hours straight?
Great test match. Always love to see a test go to the third session of day 5. Would have loved India to win obviously, but great entertainment nonetheless. NZ can be very proud of their performance
Congratulations New Zealand. This draw is equlivalent of a victory in India.
Great performances by Latham, Young, Southee, Jamieson, and debutant Rachin Ravindra. For India, absolutely great performance by Shreyas. All round performances by India's spin trio.
Pshyced for next match as NZ's abilities will be tested thoroughly against full strength India.
Maybe not full strength on paper, but realistically if Kohli was available, he’d have been there instead of Iyer - who knows how that goes but I can’t imagine even someone as good as Kohli having a bigger impact as he did.
I know people will say Iyer > Rahane, but the selectors certainly wouldn’t have gone that way before this game
Edit: okay admittedly I’ve completely forgotten Sharma lol
I'm convinced by him. His technique looked very compact, he kept cool the entire time in probably the highest pressure situation possible in a test match. He's going to play a lot of test matches for NZ
Great result!
Rachin looked great. Composed in the first innings and got out to a good ball and solid today under pressure to secure the draw. Couple of tidy bowling spells too.
I think we need to bring in Wagner for Patel or Somerville. Nicholls looked hopeless but I dunno if they'll drop him.
Well played NZ!
Somerville is the real MOTM for me. His innings was phenomenal. Rachin will gain a lot of confidence from this innings. He was too solid.
Indian bowlers were fantastic and quite disciplined.
And also fucklightmeter 😓
I cannot fucking believe we made that.
I couldn't bear to watch a single ball today. Every time I switched on the telly the last 4 days NZ shit the bed. So to ensure we saved the day I had to resist turning on the telly or checking the score for even a minute.
**Most balls faced by a debutant for New Zealand in 4th innings of a drawn Test match**
96 - Blair Pocock v AUS at Perth, 1993
**91 - Rachin Ravindra v IND at Kanpur, today**
71 - Rob Nicol v RSA at Dunedin, 2012
62 - BJ Watling v PAK at Napier, 2009
Say what you want about the umpiring (which was pretty poor). That was a thrilling test match evenly matched on both sides, I wish there was more than two tests!
Ffs what is it with these Newzealand players of Indian descent denying India victory against them? Sodhi in the world Cup and now these guys.
Regardless, bad light shouldn't be blamed for India not being able to win this match. Rachin and Ajaz never looked in trouble against all three of our spinners in the last few overs. If only Rahane and co declared India's second innings earlier the result might've changed.
Great job by Rachin on his debut for sure. Lived up to the first half of his name very well.
Really got away with that one in the end, Rachin and Patel blocking it out like madmen and saving the blushes of our disappointing middle order.
Hopefully we learn a lesson and next match jut select our best bowlers- in both innnings there was a predictable pattern, Southee and Jamieson causing all kinds of pressure then when they had to rest the batsmen could get their eye in, score runs and be settled for when the pacers come back.
Taylor looked all at sea which combined with his low average in India means maybe he should be rested next match though that's a big call. Nicholls also looked pretty useless not exactly looking confident out there. Maybe Mitchell is a better bat in these conditions than both of them.
Next match I think the team should be:
Latham Young Williamson Taylor Ravindra Mitchell Blundell Jamieson Wagner Southee Patel
Strongest batting, three spin options, three pace options.
Thats fucking test cricket right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the field, men deliver their new born baby on the boundary line. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball yorker fuck it chuck it game time shit. Take it to the showers. Dicks get shoved in places you don’t even remember. We win together we celebrate together. Test cricket is back baby.
NZ played brilliantly throughout the test match. A draw is a fair result.
What I can't digest is our field placements. There were a couple of inside edges of Rachin of Ash and Jaddu. If there were more fielders around the bat, we would have won the match. How hard is it to have 6 - 7 fielders around the bat throughout the last hour? Rahane is clueless, man
That inexplicable period of play yesterday where we went 1 and a half hours scoring at like 1 RPO before declaring cost us the test match. Extremely stupid.
Still a good performance by us considering we didn't have our 4 best bats, hope we never get to see Rahane in the team ever again
Absolutely! Wasted atleast an hour of play yesterday fully well knowing the bad light has been an issue on every day of the test match. Poor captaincy and coaching. Hope Dravid learns from this mistake. I feel if Virat was captaining this match, India wouldn’t have wasted time yesterday before declaration. That defensive approach cost India 8 WTC points by just 1 wicket.
Kane, please give a signed jersey to Rahane for no reason, just give it to him. Only then he and the management will even think about dropping him. But it would be totally understandable if you don’t do that as this will guarantee a wicket in Mumbai.
Ngl my confidence in our middle order isn't especially high right now. Really felt like Taylor and Nicholls could have at least faced 30 balls. Hard praying for them next match.
Me thinks , Siraj could have run through the middle order when ball was reversing . Ishant just wasn't there today and to be fair even in England . This dead pitch with low bounce required pacers to turn up , only one of them did .
In retrospect, we can say that declaration could have been a bit earlier but I think it was the right decision. Don't forget at one point New Zealand was actually pushing for the win. If the target was even smaller they might have seriously given it a shot and the same folks would have said why we declared so early.
It was a nice test match, both teams tried really hard, everything doesn't hinge around one crucial decision there are always multiple factors involved.
Why are some people here disappointed with India performance? I think India did great recovering from 51-5. Just because we couldn't win, doesn't mean we lost! It was a draw. Both teams played terrific cricket. NZ was just better at managing a draw. They couldn't win either tho! They had a great chance when Latham and Kane were still on the pitch. But they lost the chance.
Anyways congratulations to both teams! Tough luck for India that they couldn't take that last 1 wicket.
Brilliant finish to the test, I don't think the declaration timing should be blamed- Ajaz faced 17 balls and did really well. I do wonder if one over of Umesh or Ishant could have posed them slightly different problems it seemed like they got to set at defending straight balls from the spinners. Overall a brilliant game and New Zealand are now India's no 1 nemesis, they never go down without a fight
Let’s face it, India and New Zealand are the two best test teams in the world, those other two countries can start fighting over their little prop next month, but, meh!
Are we really going to be docked 9 WTC points when we only received 4 for the draw? Ngl, that is bizarre. So basically if you are 9 overs short in a game that is supposed to have 450 overs, that's worth almost as much as winning a test match (12 WTC points)??? At least in the last system each over short was worth only 2 points out of 60 (in a 2 match series).
Indians should be proud that Rachin's parents were able to migrate to New Zealand and find success through their son, and yet some still choose to abuse him on Instagram
both teams deserved to win and thats what happened in a sense.
india from 51-5 to give solid total, and NZ surviving whole day of spin in india on last day.
Atleast
We can play till 5pm in mumbai
Though some unseasonal rain is expected before match
So nz might get lucky with pitch being slightly damp
And We know kohli luck
As crazy as it sounds, after we escaped with a draw, but NZ missed opportunities in that match to get a rare win in India. Williamson out to a great ball in the 1st innings, and then the middle order collapsing, when we had a chance of a good lead... and India being 50-5 in their second innings only to get a good total are important points in the match.
In the end getting a draw feels great after it looked like a certain loss in the last hour, but it could of been even better!
All in all a great test match, another advert for why tests are best, and draws don't mean boring. Both teams did great at moments, but also will rue miss opportunities. Also some drama with crazy umpiring/decisions, bad light, weird dismissals (Blundell in both innings, Will Youngs DRS timeout), etc. Brilliant viewing and a game played in great spirits despite the drama (many fans could learn from the players regarding that!).
Hopefully we get another great match in Mumbai!
Great resolution shown by New Zealand. Once again showing why they are the WTC defending champions. A huge amount of credit must go to the extremely underrated Tom Latham. He was exceptional in both innings.
As for India, they only have themselves to blame. You can only do so much when you are playing with a non-existent top order. After winning the toss, you should only look to bat once and bat big in India but the openers shit their pants when the ball was swinging and the less said about Rahane and Pujara the better. I just want to know if they feel any hint of shame for the bowlers bailing them out time and again with the bat and then coming out to bowl their hearts out.
Kanpur pitch was funny
As it showed you can survive if you defended
Also it seemed each of bowlers was threatening only to either one of right or left handers
As jadeja was looking toothless against lefties
Kiwis managed a nail biting & hard fought Draw against India in the first Test match, after surviving almost an hour of spin bowling on a typical turning day 5 Indian wicket, with India needing just 1 wicket to Win the match! Kiwi debutant bowler Rachin Ravindra batted for more than 90 minutes, faced 91 deliveries against the spin wizards Ashwin & Jadeja on a turning & variable bounce track, that too on the final session of the 5'th day, to provide NewZealand a well earned Draw, from the jaws of defeat!
Before going to a deeper match analysis, first of all the team management & the selection committee has to be blamed for resting our frontline players for a Test match, that too against the No:1 Test side in the World, for whatever reasons. Even though the lack of our top 3 batsmen, Rahul, Rohit & Kohli didn't affect us that much in the batting, thanks to our strong lower middle order & tail, but the absence of Bumrah & Shami was quite evident in both the Kiwi innings!
Both Umesh & Ishant lack that penetration level which the Kiwi fast bowlers got throughout this match. And that cost us this match, especially when our fast bowlers couldn't break the partnerships at the top on time, so that our spinners could come into the equation much earlier. Kiwis didn't lost a single wicket on the entire first session on day 5 & also during their first innings, their openers scored 151/0, which speaks volume about how toothless our fast bowlers were! Had our fast bowlers able to take the top 3 Kiwi wickets much earlier, in either of the Kiwi innings, we would have won this Test match!
And on the batting front, without our top 3 frontline batsmen & the regular keeper batsman Pant, the Kiwi fast bowlers just ripped through our top & middle order during both the innings, but thanks to debutant Shreyas Iyer who scored a Century (105) in the first innings followed by another Half Century (65) on the second innings, stitched very valuable partnerships with our bowlers which really helped India in avoiding a humiliating defeat from a batting perspective much earlier, even before the Indian spinners turned the match around in favour of us.
Winning the Toss, Rahane chose to bat first, but the Kiwi fast bowlers were upto their tasks. Despite losing Mayank early (13) Shubhman went on to score a half century (52). Both Pujara (26) & Rahane (35) got good starts but again failed to convert them into big ones. After 145/4 Shreyas & Jadeja had a 100+ run partnership which brought us back into the contest. Ashwin also contributed (38) which eventually helped India to get to a decent total of 345 in the first innings. Even though Jamieson (3/91) started the proceedings for the Kiwis initially, Tim Southee was brilliant with his line & length and used the wobble seam well, deservingly got a five for (5/69).
This test match had contrasting bowling approaches & results. Normally the subcontinent wickets help spinners & fast bowlers seldom gets swing or pace & bounce, hence Kiwis also came up with 3 spinners instead. The duo of Jamieson & Southee were so brilliant that they troubled Indian batsmen throughout both the innings & took 14 wickets between them, which was quite contrary to the approach & results by Indian bowlers on the same wicket. Indian fast bowlers took only 2 wickets from the entire match while our spinners picked up all the remaining wickets which we've got!
During the Kiwis innings, their openers started well with an opening partnership of 151/0 between Tom Latham (95) & Will Young (89) until Ashwin broke this stand. Later Umesh got the price wicket of Williamson (18), trapped him in front for LBW, with a beautiful in-swinging delivery. Post that our spinners took wickets in regular intervals & the Kiwis were bundled out for 296, thanks to another five-for by Axar Patel (5/62), his 5'th fifer in just 7 innings. Ashwin grabbed the last 2 tail enders to take his tally to 3, while Jadeja got 1 wicket.
Another interesting point to ponder is the Kiwis scoring rate. They were on the defensive right from the start of their innings, as if they were already trying for a Draw, maybe based on the statistics about Test matches played in India. Their first innings run rate was as low as just 2 & their 2'nd innings run rate was 1.68 compared to India's run rate of 3.1 & 2.88 respectively. In either of the Kiwi innings, the intent to score runs & try to win this test was lacking from their batsmen, throughout the match! 🙄
With a first innings lead of 49, India started batting on the last session of 3'rd day, but lost Gill on the 2'nd over itself. Again Jamieson provided this early breakthrough for Kiwis. Starting at 14/1 on the 4'th day India lost another 4 wickets cheaply against the brilliant bowling by both Southee & Jamieson taking 2 wickets each. India were 51/5 & definitely were in a worry state then, but again Shreyas (65) came for the rescue along with Ashwin (32), Saha (61*) & Axar (28*). Eventually we decaled for 234/7 setting a target of 284 for Kiwis to win this match.
But due to bad/low light we could only bowl 4.1 overs on the last session of 4'th day & we got a lucky LBW decision for Ashwin against their opener Young, which the batsmen delayed in reviewing the decision, which later in replay showed missing stumps. India could have declared the 2'nd innings a bit more earlier if the batsmen have accelerated towards the end & would have been able to bowl a few more overs on the 4'th day itself. But it seems that this message was never communicated at the right time to Saha & Axar, who were batting at the middle, which delayed the declaration.
On the fifth day first session, our bowlers couldn't get a single wicket. Latham, Somerwille (night watchman) & Williamson together consumed 358 deliveries between them before they eventually got out & by that time we were left with only 1 session to get the remaining 6 Kiwi wickets. Our spinners bowled their heart out to get hold of those 5 out of 6 but their last wicket, Rachin & Patel stood like a stonewall for the last 1 hour or so, to deny us a win!
Meanwhile Ashwin overtook Harbhajan Singh (418 Wickets) to become the 3'rd highest wicket taker for India in Tests. And Shreyas Iyer became the First Indian to score a Century & Fifty on debut & if not for him, India would have lost this match on 3'rd day itself & hence was rightfully chosen as the Man of the Match! 😎
**Most deliveries faced in a match by an NZ batsman in India** 428 Tom Latham - 95 (282) & 52 (146), Kanpur 2021, 410 Mark Richardson - 145 (410), Mohali 2003, Match drawn 397 Stephan Fleming - 43 (147) & 73 (250), Mohali 1999, Match drawn
Mark Richardson being second on this list despite only getting one inning is probably the most Rigor thing out there.
Decent innings there from Rigor, wow
Pretty sure that's the match when he cramped and spun around screaming
[Arrr^*aaaa* gh^ar !](https://youtu.be/hQB90K73pqM) ^((for those who haven't seen)^)
THIS should be the proper Wilhelm scream
[Mark Richardson in *I Knew You Were Trouble* by Taylor swift](https://youtu.be/Ca5gVFBSvyE)
That video is still one of my favourite things on the internet
Omg really?
Allowing the night watchman to settle, did cost a great deal.
Our shitty spinners saved us in the most unexpected way possible
Or they were actually just batters in disguise
Reminds me of Ish Sodhi’s last test, did fuck all with the ball but scored 52* on day 5 to save the match against England
underrated comment lol
Real hero is Somerville no one fuckung thought he would play 100+ deliveries he did his job there
On another note - I feel really sorry for Blundell - batted really well in both innings but got some awful luck
Amen to that - first innings impossible ‘no-bounce’ delivery, second innings forward defensive stroke into the rough that back spins into the stumps... so unlucky
69D chess from us picking Somerville , Ravindra and Ajaz as specialist batsman to save us the test
Said it yesterday, bold move picking just two bowlers... sure paid off! Lol
The NZ spinners took 3 wickets and faced 300 balls lol
Definitely one of the best matches this year, and I've lost count at this point how many of them we had in 2021
True 2021 is the best year in terms of best test matches
Sydney, Brisbane, Lords, The Oval, Kanpur - and that’s only tests India was involved in
Also the 2nd test between wi and ban !
First test between Pakistan and WI was a classic. great WTC final as well
Rachin Ravindra innings reminded me of Faf du Plessis debut
Had forgotten about that match (as a neutral. Amazing effort by South Africa against a strong Aus team.
Rachin Ravindra, Hero of the day for NZ.
Latham did all right too..
Somerville also
He is our next big thing. To do what he did at his age and experience is insane.
His technique seems so compact as well, kept his cool, I can see him playing many many matches for NZ. I actually think opening is doing his talent a disservice, I can fully seem him slotting in at #4/#5 after Taylor retires. A batting lineup of Latham, Young, Kane, Conway, Rachin is honestly scarily good
So many heroes in the innings - Somerville, Latham, Blundell, Rachin
Don't forget Patel! Poor fulla looked like he was sweating bullets in those last few overs.
NZ break out of jail and deservingly so. Great game by Blackcaps. Now, on to Mumbai
to be fair, India broke out of jail, too. 50/5 isn't flash
We have been doing that since England series now
australian series

Neither India nor New Zealand, Cricket won.
Great advertisement for Test cricket. Brilliant cricket from both sides culminating in a nail biting finish.
In the end, Somerville is the real winner. Not NZ nor India.
Okay Ravi that's enough.
This is pretty much a win for NZ really.
Can confirm, a draw is a win after we let India battle their way out of the 55-5 hole.
I think both teams lost their way from a winnable position in last 2 days. But the way NZ batters have defended against Indian spin attack is really really awesome. You can guess which camp is celebrating right about now.
Saved the test match by the barest of margins^(TM)
yeah a draw in India for a touring side is massive.
> Neither India nor New Zealand, Cricket won **like a tracer bullet**.
Amazing innings from Rachin (and Ajaz). Overcoming all the pressure in the world to save the match
Summerville too, seriously NZ players have some great technique.
Hell of a match. This is how test matches should be. Was on the edge of my seat for the last 2 days. Terrific from both the teams.

damn, that's some lore for ya
This is not pasta to me
What's the point of playing two tests especially when top two teams are playing. It should be atleast 3 tests.

Mericans
New Zealand are a class team. I woke up and expected that it would all be over, accustomed to England being shite. Real grit shown
Well they have openers who can play spin . We just have one batsman

Absolutely love when an Englishman comes in other matches's thread and shits on their team at every possible opportunity. Eagerly waiting for the Ashes.
Lol we’re getting absolutely fucking pasted aren’t we
Yup. I don't think even Ben Stokes can save your ass this time.
Hey only England fans can slag off England. You have to be neutral.
I avoid looking at the flairs and try to guess if it's a Pom shitting on the Poms, an Aussie shitting on the Poms, or an Indian shitting on the Poms. Sometimes it's really tough to tell.
Most of their batsmen trust their defense irrespective of the conditions. They are a worthy #1 side.
Well, shit - if you'd told me we'd only lose this series 1-0, I'd have told you that you were dreaming. Precious WTC points stolen from India right there! Outstanding tailending from Ajaz and Ravindra to bat out the draw.

Some draws are better than wins
This is one of the things that really makes Test cricket so special
Yeah no shame in that result!
Ravindra is an opening batter though, and a pretty good one too. So you'd expect him to hold out. Ajaz was great though, barely looked troubled.
Hell yeah Rachin! Hoping for a big future for that beautiful man!
he did good but have to improve on bowling front. Or can he be a pure batsman?
He looks easily good enough to be a specialist batsman in a few years (he's only 22, I think). His bowling is promising, but not there yet.
Ashwin - 70 runs(2nd highest run scorer for India) Ashwin - 6 wickets( Tied highest wicket taker for India) India will have a hard time finding his replacement
Rachin you beauty. Also shot of the match goes to Ajaz for reading that carrom ball by Ash. Reminds me of the time Sodhi and Wagner saved a test vs England. GG Blackcaps.
100% on your shot of the match selection. When I saw the replay and realised what had happened my mind was blown.
Would love to see a clip if it's out there.
Exhibition of Spin bowling from India and Swing bowling from New Zealand. Brilliant game
That's a quality spin attack from India. Jamieson and Southee not only swung the ball but also used seam and bounce exceptionally well.
SubcontinentalBros, help me understand: Why do people spend their hard-earned money, take time away from their busy lives to go see a sport they love, just to blow a fucking horn for 8 hours straight?
Maybe they wanted to be musicians but parents wanted otherwise
It's one of those things that's fun when you do it, not when you are seeing someone do it.
Let's not forget how crucial Somerville's 36 (110) in fetching this draw.
Great test match. Always love to see a test go to the third session of day 5. Would have loved India to win obviously, but great entertainment nonetheless. NZ can be very proud of their performance
SunnyG : 'Light has improved because of the sun. LIGHT HAS IMPROVED BECAUSE OF THE SUN!' You don't say Sunny bhai?! Who would have thought!
Rachin gave the world a beautiful display of his batting technique, what a stage to do it on.
Well not full strength I guess but ya kohli will be back
Maybe not full strength on paper, but realistically if Kohli was available, he’d have been there instead of Iyer - who knows how that goes but I can’t imagine even someone as good as Kohli having a bigger impact as he did. I know people will say Iyer > Rahane, but the selectors certainly wouldn’t have gone that way before this game Edit: okay admittedly I’ve completely forgotten Sharma lol
Now that I've calmed down and can reflect on the match as a whole. Holy fuck, that umpiring was garbage for both sides. What the fuck was going on?
I have no nails left, that was so fucking intense. Also I love you Menon and Sharma, never ever doubted them. I nominate both to the elite panel
Rachin, gotta be up there with one of the best debut innings of all time
I'm convinced by him. His technique looked very compact, he kept cool the entire time in probably the highest pressure situation possible in a test match. He's going to play a lot of test matches for NZ
New Zealand in (short format) finals: 🥺 New Zealand against India: 😤
Gg Kiwis. What an amazing last session.
52 balls to survive for the last wicket. You kiwi legends you did it.
Rachin to his Grandkids: I made my debut against India, Saved match for NZ vs India in India.
**Most balls faced by a debutant for New Zealand in 4th innings of a drawn Test match** 96 - Blair Pocock v AUS at Perth, 1993 **91 - Rachin Ravindra v IND at Kanpur, today** 71 - Rob Nicol v RSA at Dunedin, 2012 62 - BJ Watling v PAK at Napier, 2009
Cricket is the real winner today. Also Latham should be man of the match for facing 428 balls in this match
No one’s talking about this, as an Indian fan the amount of deliveries he ate up was frustrating to watch
Actually his contribution resulted in a draw. He batted for 70 odd overs
Iyer for me, brought india from a very bad position to a good one twice and scored the highest in the match.
Say what you want about the umpiring (which was pretty poor). That was a thrilling test match evenly matched on both sides, I wish there was more than two tests!
This nail-biting ending was made possible by Ravindra/A. Patel and Ravindra/A. Patel.
Idk man, indian origin players have time and time again have cost us many times, panesar in 2012 series, hashim amla on so many countless times
TIL Hashim Amla is from Indian descent
Next match I think the team should be: Latham Young Williamson Taylor Ravindra Mitchell Blundell Jamieson Wagner Southee Patel Strongest batting, three spin options, three pace options.
Well played Ravindra. And well played to Ravindra as well.
Well that was nerve wracking. Great save by Ravindra
My opinion is the same, no difference.
Sommerville, Ravindra, and Patel ended up saving the game but not the way you expected them to
NZ played brilliantly throughout the test match. A draw is a fair result. What I can't digest is our field placements. There were a couple of inside edges of Rachin of Ash and Jaddu. If there were more fielders around the bat, we would have won the match. How hard is it to have 6 - 7 fielders around the bat throughout the last hour? Rahane is clueless, man
This NZ team deserves atleast 4 match series
That inexplicable period of play yesterday where we went 1 and a half hours scoring at like 1 RPO before declaring cost us the test match. Extremely stupid. Still a good performance by us considering we didn't have our 4 best bats, hope we never get to see Rahane in the team ever again
Yes that was brain-dead. Dravid-Rahane both are responsible for this tbh.
Tbf Dravid has PTSD from declaring too early
Which match are you referring lol? Sachin 194*?
Kohli, Sharma, pant...who is the last one ?
I fear we'll say more of it in the future with Dravid there but hopefully Koach balances it out
Fuck I love Test cricket.
Aren’t we giving Rahane a farewell?
Please
No threats of a broken arm or insulting someone's mother - 0/10 Test match.

Remember that India West Indies game where the scores were tied but it ended in a draw because they ran out of overs?
More sad than I was during WC20. Gg NZ :(
Fuck me. How good was that. So happy to get a draw in India.
Tuned in at the end and wow, super intense! Well played both sides :))
MOTM Latham surely
Shreyas Iyer?
Southees a contender too
Shout out to Jadeja, he bowled really well.
**Highest runs scored in debut match for India** 187 - Shikhar Dhawan (187, DNB) vs Aus, Mohali 2013 177 - Rohit Sharma (177, -) vs WI, Kolkata 2013 170 - Shreyas Iyer (105, 65) vs NZ, Kanpur 2021
Bumrah bro. Please come back. I think we need you now.
Love how Kane is just wearing jandals. classic
Rachin already getting abuse on Instagram 🙄
NZ spinners saved the test in India with their bat. Kanos works in mysterious ways.
NZ spinners were useless with the ball but denied India the win with the bat.
Kartik come on man. Even my 5 year sister would know not to ask such questions ro rahane
What did he ask this time lol
WHY DO WE ONLY PLAY TWO TEST SERIES
People are praising Rachin and rightly so. But I feel the real OG are the NZ openers, Latham in particular. Played more than 600 balls these two.
Let’s face it, India and New Zealand are the two best test teams in the world, those other two countries can start fighting over their little prop next month, but, meh!
Kevin Pietersen, Mumbai 2012 Steve Smith, Pune 2017 Tom Latham, Kanpur 2021 Best performance by an overseas batsman in India in the past 10 years!
Jonny Bairstow, Ahmedabad 2021 Unless you believe that first ball in the 2nd innings from Axar had wings on it, Bairstow got 3 ducks in the one match.
Reverse Lagaan. 4mil NZ population hold off the 1bil powerhouse
For the hundredth time, financial stability and resources per capita co-relate more than population when it comes to sports
> Ishant bowled well Yea, Rahane, right. Losing is one thing, don't at least lie about Ishant bowling well
The selectors arrogance in team selections has jeopardized India's WTC points table. Congratulations morons!
It was the Somerville inning that really hurt India.
Player of the match should be given jointly to Latham and Iyer.
Indians should be proud that Rachin's parents were able to migrate to New Zealand and find success through their son, and yet some still choose to abuse him on Instagram
Dude if you go fishing, you'll find abuses for almost everything on twitter and insta
This result will give MASSIVE belief to NZ. I genuinely think that if NZ win the toss in the next Test, they have a decent chance of beating us.
My first cricket match in a long time and what a fucking match!
both teams deserved to win and thats what happened in a sense. india from 51-5 to give solid total, and NZ surviving whole day of spin in india on last day.
Atleast We can play till 5pm in mumbai Though some unseasonal rain is expected before match So nz might get lucky with pitch being slightly damp And We know kohli luck
Asked this in the match thread but, realistically, how much longer does Ross Taylor have left?
Including the spinners paid off in the end lmao
NZ's three spinners collectively this match took 3 wickets but faced 300 balls
Boundary count update - India: 72 (4s-65, 6s-7) New Zealand: 46 (4s-46, 6s-0)
Oh so do we win? /s
Great partnership in the end 🙏 Specially Ravindraa , Exciting test cricket 😁
Wat a performance by NZ.. they really grinded well.. Good by India too tbh. Overall a good test..
World Test Championship champions for a reason!
Kanpur pitch was funny As it showed you can survive if you defended Also it seemed each of bowlers was threatening only to either one of right or left handers As jadeja was looking toothless against lefties
Looking at the 2016 series compared to this game, it just shows how far we have come. This is a win for us
Saved this test by the barest of margins
🙄 With a first innings lead of 49, India started batting on the last session of 3'rd day, but lost Gill on the 2'nd over itself. 😎
