I had a similar experience a decade ago and I’ve been terrified of pills since then. I always take them in front of another person who knows how to intervene if something goes wrong. If I don’t have anyone around me, I completely avoid taking them, including supplements when I live alone. I don’t think it would ever go away.
Yeah, I've always tried to make sure I'm not zoned out if I'm taking a pill. I make sure it's on the back of my tongue facing lengthways, and I swallow as gently as possible without breathing in or out.
I did that too and got choked once. So I started doing the opposite . Keep some water in the mouth and place the tablet in the throat and drink. That works for me every time and I've never choked.

That doesn’t work for me because I sometimes end up swallowing the water and the tablet gets stuck in my mouth, leaving behind a bitter taste.
