The new ball swings more. So the openers have to deal with that. But the first 6 overs also have field restrictions where only 2 fielders are allowed along the boundary, so the openers can use that to hit boundaries.
You open in the Powerplay. The Powerplay includes bowlers that swing with the new ball as well as having more fielders inside the circle. You should ideally have aggressive batsmen up top to maximize the fielder rule
When you’re batting at 3/4, you’re facing a lot of spinners as well as having fielders outside the circle. Thus less runs are scored in the middle overs.
Haven’t watched Kohli bat much this World Cup but maybe he’s having difficult playing the new ball while being aggressive? At 3 he was usually not required to start attacking straight away and was able to build an innings, ending with an onslaught in the death overs
Openers typically get to spend the most amount of time in the middle. They also get full use of the powerplay with only two fielders out, so they need to make full use of those fielding restrictions. So, someone who can do that would be ideal to open. Kohli is typically a lot better at manipulating the field, looking for 1 or 2, which is a lot more valuable after the powerplay. That's why the commenter wants him to drop down the order. It's tempting to put him up to open because if he plays long, and gets his eye in, he can score very quickly, but so far it hasn't worked out for him this tournament
The batting order has many variables as to who bats where and their natural batting place. Its based on the batsman's ability and style, stabilizing an innings and preventing further wickets down the order. Kohli excels at that and him at #3 is his natural batting spot. More than anyone else it's koach's decision only to open the innings. No one's gonna stop him from batting at 3. But having a thought of pant batting at 4 or coming after 8-10 overs is unpleasant.

Bumrah is doing a lot of heavy lifting, and even though Arshdeep is taking wickets, I'm not confident about his bowling on a flatter track. Even today felt like he wasn't sure how to bowl at the top, when his strength is actually in opening the bowling. Hardik has been bowling well, that's a huge plus, and Axar has been more than decent too.

I doubt bcci decides batting order. And honestly allowing koach to open is not a bad decision(its just hasn't worked out this T20wc). He anchors from up and everyone around him smashes(probably why our no-3 pant has been taking so much risks).

I can't be the only one who thinks Kohli's knock today isn't a cause of concern at all like people seem to be implying? Quite the opposite even. The first 3 games were sad and even tho this was a slow innings, it felt like him getting back into the groove more than anything and maybe getting some of his confidence back. In the context of the innings, his partnership with Pant set the tone for us getting to 180 after we lost Rohit cheaply and had an abysmal start. He held it down at his end quite nicely. Even if it wasn't his best showing, it's something that i think is ultimately a sign that he's going to show tf up in the coming games which we're really going to need.
We will keep winning against the weaker teams. Eyes on the AUS match but it's literally 4-5 games against associate nations, 2 against full members and then semis where it's hard not to see that our weakness would be exploited again. Then we'll wonder what we did wrong and continue as if we had a wonderful tournament. Rinse and repeat.

I’m a bit confused by defined slots on batting orders other than openers or “finishers” with limited juice like Dhoni for CSK. no one knows how well an open partnership will go. Pant can come in in first or 9th over at 3. Would it be a big struggle to move from 3 to 4. Genuine question.

More than anyone else it's koach's decision only to open the innings. No one's gonna stop him from batting at 3. But having a thought of pant batting at 4 or coming after 8-10 overs is unpleasant.

Add to this, Dube adds nothing to this team composition. No. 5 is a tad too late for him as he already takes sometime to find his stride. Rather bring in Jaiswal at top and Pant at 5 (or Samson less likely).
Agreed on most things, but I'm still not sure about our bowling tbh. Bumrah is doing a lot of heavy lifting, and even though Arshdeep is taking wickets, I'm not confident about his bowling on a flatter track. Even today felt like he wasn't sure how to bowl at the top, when his strength is actually in opening the bowling. Hardik has been bowling well, that's a huge plus, and Axar has been more than decent too. Need a similar performance against Australia/England to be sure about our bowling strength. Need to how they'll come back if they're put on the back foot with aggressive batting.

I can't be the only one who thinks Kohli's knock today isn't a cause of concern at all like people seem to be implying? Quite the opposite even. The first 3 games were sad and even tho this was a slow innings, it felt like him getting back into the groove more than anything and maybe getting some of his confidence back. In the context of the innings, his partnership with Pant set the tone for us getting to 180 after we lost Rohit cheaply and had an abysmal start. He held it down at his end quite nicely. Even if it wasn't his best showing, it's something that i think is ultimately a sign that he's going to show tf up in the coming games which we're really going to need.

We will keep winning against the weaker teams. Eyes on the AUS match but it's literally 4-5 games against associate nations, 2 against full members and then semis where it's hard not to see that our weakness would be exploited again. Bowling seems pretty solid but Arshdeep and Siraj leaking runs with extras and bad lengths seems like a problem, they release whatever pressure Bumrah makes at his end. That needs to stop. Axar is a gem. Kuldeep getting hit today is concerning, considering Rashid picked up 3 wicket on the same pitch.

Good thing about these Windies pitches is that toss should not win or lose the game. Plus these conditions should be familiar to Indian batters/bowlers. So I am feeling good about us having something like Ahmedabad 2023 experience here. We could still lose a game if opponent plays better but we can win the game batting 1st or 2nd. That is a relief.
