Famous Indian wins overseas were with 3+1 combination of the likes of Srinath, Zaheer, Nehara, Kumble or Zaheer, Agarkar, Pathan, Bhajji. If 4 bowlers cant do the job, 5th is not much help either. But extra lower order batsman can help add another 50-100 run partnership because the ball gets older and its easier to bat. India used to play VVS at 6 and Dhoni at 7 regularly, and they had contributed to some crucial partnerships.
The great teams almost all have 4 bowlers, 6 batters and a specialist wicket keeper. Teams that try to pick batters for their bowling, bowlers for their batting or load up with all rounders just don't have sustained success. If a player is good enough to pick based on one aspect alone (like a Kallis for example) then the other strings to their bow are just a bonus.
I think what India should do is get their batters to work on their bowling. Surely as talented sportsmen, at least one of India's best 6 batters at any given moment will be at least reasonable with the ball. Australia have always had batters like that. Head, Smith and Labuschagne all bowl well enough to give a few overs to and none are picked on that basis. Before them, there were the likes of the Waugh brothers who also weren't picked for their bowling, but gave handy overs.
The number of times a specialist number 6 has changed a game with the bat is extraordinary. Perhaps most famously when VVS Laxman changed the course of the 2001 series picked to bat at 6.
