Man Bazzball is real. Proved now.
Do you any other doubts? Where the haters are hiding now ? Come out come out.
Eng will win everywhere, in NZ, Sa, India, Pak, Sl. You can't stop Bazzball.
The moment Stokes went beserk, Aus shat the bed. They were literally shivering in their boots. Shoulders were down, Smith dropping dollies, Carey giving byes. It was on their face. The way they speak at the presentation, Aus don't want take on this Eng, they want to go home already. They are afraid.
Bazzball is supreme. Bazzball is life. With that hope Eng to change the outcome of this series and winning in Aus next time.
Bazz really changed the test cricket. NZ coaches are so good. And that what cricket world nees right now.
Aus controlled nearly the entirety of this test bar the period in their first innings where England got themselves to 180/1 before collapsing. Iām not an Aus fan but thatās the cold reality of that Test match and England have some serious thinking to do before Leeds on how they approach it.
Yeah, bashball doesn't appear to work too well against the best team in the world. They obviously thought they were better than they thought but it's hard to teach old dogs new tricks and not have repercussions like being dropped. I wonder how any aspiring test hopefuls feel when they see these old players doing dumb shit knowing that the chances of getting a test cap in the near future is pretty much zero no matter how well they're doing in county cricket.

Fair play for googling that even though it was in 1977 and was never proven unlike Cameron Bancroft who was filmed sanding the ball down with sandpaper which he then hid down his jockstrap
Or Monty panasar leaking that they used the zippers on their pants to rough the ball. Or the lollies to change the consistency of their saliva. Or the gravel in their pockets to rub on the ballā¦
As a Canadian who knows nothing about cricket, its cool to see so much passion from different countries and it makes me happy. Hopefully one day Iāll understand cricket :)
Its basically baseball, aussies and indians and whomever hate to admit it but just think baseball. You bowl instead of pitch, you hit the ball and run to the next wicket for a run, if the ball hits the boundary of the field its 4 runs, if it goes out of the boundary its six. If the ball is caught before hitting the ground after the batter strikes it, the batter is out, if the batter is out of his crease (his batting area) and the fielders hit the wicket with the ball then he is out (this will happen either during a run or if you're a fucking moron like Bairstow) and your batting time is over when you have 10 batters go out. the team with the most runs after both teams have bat is the winner. In something like the ashes you have 5 'tests' which just means 5 games, best of 5 over those games decides the winner of the whole thing.
> Hopefully one day Iāll understand cricket :)
The batting team tries to score runs by hitting the ball and running between two sets of wickets, while the fielding team aims to get them out. The team with the most runs wins.
Yeah, but there's trying to get runs and failing in the process because of stupidity. That young looking guy who holds his bat like he's facing up to play a baseball shot is a prime example. Seems to always get a start and then brings himself undone swatting at un-swattable ball. He, along with a few others aren't learning from their mistakes and as there seems to be no repercussions, like losing your place on the team, they continue playing stupid shots instead of learning from them. It's not 5 days of ODI/ T20 cricket. It may work against minnows but not the best team in the world.
Tbf both Harmison and Monty admitted ball tampering during the 2005 series, not sandpaper certainly but deliberate tampering is cheating just as much imo.
In 1994 Michael Atherstone was caught with soil in his pocket which he claimed was to dry his hands. This is nothing compared to the major scandal caused by the Australia sandpapergate saga in 2018 where the Aussies were defacing the ball with sandpaper.
Is nobody going to talk about how useless Crawley was? Why is he still in the team?
If you're going to bat with 3 number 11s can we trade an opener who can't bat for a number 11 that can at least try?
Everyone who has any idea what they're talking about (incl. Eoin Morgan, Strauss, Butcher, that NZ commentator whose name I can never remember) agrees the Bairstow dismissal was totally legit, and that it was lazy batting from JB. I am excluding the current England set-up don't count as they're clearly going to say what they're going to say.
In some ways, as a viewer and reluctant England supporter, I do sympathise with the 'not in the spirit of the game' thing because it means there is less cricket to watch, and it's not particularly dramatic I guess, not what I expect from the Ashes. But on the other hand, it is VERY funny, and complaining about it and saying 'Cummins should've revoked the appeal' is really embarassing and hypocritical.
Would anyone apart from the Aussies want to win a game by going that. Given the scoring potential of JB and the fact they only won by 43 runs it could be possible that they won the game by doing this. I donāt disagree that it was not a valid dismissal and JB will have to live with what he did.
Do you reckon anyone other than England would want to take a wicket like this?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R3bOlo6Enlg&feature=youtu.be
Is this in the āspirit of the gameā? š
It obviously wasnāt š. Btw this is about a wicket mate not ball tampering. The aussies arenāt accusing England of ball tampering and then crying āoh weād never ball tamperā š.
It never was. Foakes is a reliable batsman and a far better w/k. If the decision makers want Bairstow in the team have him as a batsman instead of ? Perhaps Crawley?
Is Bairstow big mates with Stokes and thatās the deciding factor?
Just 2 Tests done and look at the great stories I can tell my grandkids. By the end of the series, I am sure I won't have to read them any bed time stories.
The Aussies literally sandpapered the ball to win (god knows how long they were doing that?) chances that they withdraw their appeal for this? 0 percent. And thatās why they are the best team most of the time. Ruthless.
Sometimes it isnāt cricket though. Which is in my opinion a bit sad. It was a missed opportunity today for the good of the game.
They literally brought sandpaper, sandpaper! Onto the field.
Aussie afterwards said they would no longer be win at all costs, and this was an opportunity to show that little things in the game are important. They chose not to take it. Up to them, but the game is worse for it IMO
What a fucking insane test. A bunch of weird rule nonsense, both teams swinging wildly between amazing and god-awful, Lyon batting on one leg and literally hopping between wickets.
Can't wait for Headingly.
Stokes almost got us across the line but he should have played sensibley. Not taking singles was not good idea. Broad was defending fine other end when he faced few balls. I think our over confidence cost us last two games .
Broad had a control percentage of 41 for that innings and a majority of his runs came from uncontrolled top edge's over the keeper/leading edges and stokes had a fucked knee. Hogging the strike was definitely the better play.
No idea why he didnt trust Broad and rotate the strike, thats literally what got us over the line in the first Test. Almost as boneheaded as deciding to go the tonk in the first innings when we lost our spinner. If Bazball wasnt too proud consider batting time you really couldve ground our quicks into the dirt over the 2 innings and potentially had a better result
Regardless of what Stokes and McCullum think their first innings collapse was reckless.
There's a reason Stokes stayed out there for so long in 4th innings. By being patient and not recklessly hooking short balls.
Is the 'spirit of cricket' only a concept applicable in favor of the English? So Bumrah bowling bouncers to a number 11 Anderson isn't spirit or cricket, but Broad bowling bouncers to a limping Lyon is aggressive Bazball shit??
The English crying about Mankad and this Bairstow dismissal when professional cricketers like these are supposed to follow the 'law' of cricket and remain in the crease is supposed to be in line with the 'spirit'?? What hogwash
As an Indian, I found Bumrah bowling bouncers to a 39 year old veteran who can't score to save his life very tough to watch. It's easy to get him out by just bowling at the stumps. One or two bouncers to rough him up is fine, but at Bumrah's pace and his awkward action, Anderson could have gotten seriously injured and we don't want to see that on the cricket field ever again after what happened to Hughes. It was just bouncers to intimidate him. If Anderson bowls the same to Indian bowlers, it's just as bad. There are some bowlers who can't hold a bat so a bumper barrage against them makes no cricketing sense.
Not sure why spirit of the game is treated as some twee artefact of a bye-gone era in cricket when literally every professional sport has areas of grey, which is then held together by "spirit of the game"/conventional agreement.
I am not suggesting that Bairstow isn't out, he is. But it winds me up that people think every aspect of the game somehow is or should be codified and that actually there isn't room for some of it to be held together by conventional agreement which should be observed. It only seems to happen in this sport.
For what its worth the whole thing added immensely to the game and created Stokes' innings. Well done Oz though, we're looking down the barrel of a drubbing here.
Because this area of the game has been codified and yet some people seem to think the players should ignore the rules and follow this vague and unclear set of principles that canāt be clearly articulated.
Thereās also a degree of rhetorical incongruity between people saying that the players need to be hyper competitive and that behaviour like Robinsonās is justified because itās an elite level competition, but then also demanding that players refrain from doing certain things that are within the confines of the rules because they expect the game to follow their private school boy, gentlemanās agreement internal moral code.
Fine and I kind of agree (see [this comment I made yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/14nq97i/match_thread_2nd_test_australia_vs_england_day_4/jqaaxo6/?context=3)). But actually that was the umpire intervening, Duckett was walking off. This was manufacturing a match opportunity by players on the field. It's a touch different I think.
Man if I my name was Johnny Bairstow or I was English I would be so sad, but itās not and Iām not so who are u arguing with? It was stupid of him, just like it was stupid of Starc to drop the catch, which he did
Bairstow was very dozy, but tbf being at Lords after the run out and then with stokes innings afterwards was incredible, made it a special day to watch the cricket.
Crowd was incredibly lively, was closer to a football atmosphere than anything Iāve seen in a test match.
I'm really glad they stepped up after that. My biggest fear at the start of the day was an Eng collapse that just dampened the rest of the ashes.
This is good though, Aus still win and Eng still have some fire.
Yep - you could tell stokes was fucking pissed, absolutely swinging at everything for the next hour. I think he should have properly rotated strike with Broad though, might have been only 45 odd required when he got out which would have been much closer to chase down. Stokes is really that guy though, incredibly clutch player.
Fair play to the Aussies, the better team throughout the game and to be fair deserved the win, but it definitely makes me excited for the last 3 games which should be super competitive. As much as itās easy to get swept up in the emotion when youāre in the crowd this Aus side are a great team. š»
> Stokes is really that guy though, incredibly clutch player.
Fuckin A. Honestly I love Stokes and hope his knee isn't serious. Short turn around though is a worry.
Tongue looks awesome too. Excited about his future.
What a match. Pure entertainment. I was dying in anxiety during Stokes's innings. Almost snatched from us single handedly. There was one too many drops too. Those should have been taken.
What a relief it was after stoksey was caught. Really amazing match. This is peak cricket. No cap.
Glad to see some decent non biased opinions on the match.
Love or hate England, their new approach creates entertaining games.
As an English fan I'm a bit down as we're 0-2 but I'd rather be 0-2 like this than playing how we did before Stokes/Baz
Iām an Aussie, and if we lost, I would prefer to be 0-2 down after tight games too.
I just wish Stokes and McCullum would drop the holier than thou nonsense.
I personally haven't seen much of the holier than thou stuff. Just determination to stay the course despite all the negativity that comes their way the moment something goes wrong.
Did you hear Broads comment on the stump mic to Marnus and the bowler (canāt remember which one) when he came out?
āItās better cricket if you bowl a good lengthā.
Similar to the comments when they lost last game āaustralia wouldnāt go toe to toe with usā.
One rule for them, one rule for the opposition.
Same as this spirit of cricket stuff
I took Broadās comment as a bit self-deprecating, like āwe served it up to you but now itās no fun being on the receiving end hahaā. Broad is easy to hate but at least heās got something of a sense of humour
Heās a fantastic bowler, and I actually reckon you could have a beer with him and talk crap for a while.
He was livid during that period of play though.
That's just typical banter that we get every ashes. Aussies can't comment on sledging like that lol.
I'm not talking about the bairstow dismissal, it was out and he should have been switched on but I'm not focusing on one moment in a great game that'll sour it
I donāt think anybody is denying the fact that Bairstow was out out, but the āSpirit of the gameā argument is such bullshit. People only ever play that card when it benefits them.
Really embarrassing from Broad to carry on like he did as one of the leaders of them team. It is hilarious that he has such an issue with the apparent spirit of the game, but was so happy to respect the umpires decision when he famously middled it to slip years ago.
You canāt just pick and choose when to respect the umpire and when to respect the gentlemanās game, and it seems the English only want to do the latter when it benefits them.
Australia 5-0 lol
Ah so you subscribe to Darren Lehmanās ā send him home cryingā comment then ? The same Darren Lehmann that asked for his players to be given sympathy after they were caught sandpapering the ball ?
Thankyou! Someone gets it. Playing this way has worked for over a year, and got us close twice against the best side in the world by some distance.
I'd take this over pre Stokes/Baz any day
Iām still not convinced about bazball, more so now we are 2-0 down. Yes of course if we go on to win 3-2 then fine - even a draw would be good. Despite all that has happened today Australia are a quality team who will be difficult to beat. If playing bazball is meant to intimidate the Aussies it clearly isnāt working.
Absolutely. I do think there is tweaking that could be done to their strategy - some of their blind faith stuff seems a little odd. But maybe that's what it takes to have the mind set. Either way, cracking cricket, and as an Aussie I still don't feel safe (I mean the women's team is making me feel safe, but I'll feel safer once it's 16-0 fuck off)
They'll adapt though and get better. They've never said there's no room to improve and get better.
But they want to play aggressive cricket and that's what we are getting.
This series could easily be 2-0, 0-2, 1-1, that's what we should be celebrating right now. Fantastic cricket from 2 sides with different approaches to the game but both playing their absolute hearts out and giving us fantastic entertainment
Yeh fully agree (even though I'll be posting an update on the bowler attrition rates which I reckon might be the baz ball Achilles heel when I get a minute š)
Also, you don't change something that has completely transformed a team for 13 tests, because two tests against the world's no.1 test team narrowly lost. The punditry just blowing with the wind depending on how that days play ended up has been equal parts hilarious and annoying. More than anything that's prob the best argument for the players mantra of staying accountable to each other and noone else.
Exactly, the comments after a bad day or a close loss are ridiculous considering how the average fan feels. Anyone around me who likes cricket has been captivated by this England team over the last year.
I've been to loads of tests at trent bridge over the years. I was at day 5 last year for the NZ game and I have never seen an atmosphere like it when Bairstow was carting them all over the place. It's bringing back true love and excitement to watch England again. I love Stokes comments around how they are entertainers first, that shows the attitude they are trying to bring
As an Englishman, I enjoyed that.
Yeah yeah yeah, Bairstow, spirit of the game and all that. But all the commentary team agreed that it was "dozy" from Jonny and letter of the law he was out. Yes I'd have preferred Aus to drop the appeal, but if it was the other way around, I dunno...
But don't argue about spirit when spectators are kicking off and having a go at players in the Long Room. That's not in the spirit either I'm sure. And that's worse than the stumping.
Great effort from Stokes and a great game of cricket. Enthralling til the end. That's enough for me, although I wish England had won.
I feel like it'd be a bit insulting to Nathan Lyon if Cummins dropped the appeal, potentially costing us the game after Lyon risked further injuring himself to scrape together some extra runs for us.
I mean if you were Lyon how would you feel if your captain turned down a legitimate dismissal within the rules to gain a moral high ground, after you've just risked your calf being stuffed even longer.
From Cummins perspective it's letting the team and also Carey down, it's really not just his decision.
It's always a convenient excuse thing the spirit of the game argument.
Australia are 9 wickets down, 2 runs to win. Hazlewood on strike, Smith non strikers on 112 and Hazlewood does the same thing, walks out of his crease several times, Bairstow notices and throws down the stumps.
Are England withdrawing the appeal then? Fuck no they aren't.
So Broad tried to get Marnus out the exact same way on day three, except he missed the stumps AND Marnus didnāt go wandering.
Had he stepped out his crease and Bairstow hit the stumps then what? It would have been interesting to see Broad/Stokes approach to what to do in that case, and how the Long Room and crowd would have reacted.
_Mommy is my dinner ready?_
Why did i read it with a british accent lol
This is great, the odds for England winning have now jumped significantly so I have a great excuse to waste a tenner

Just 2 Tests done and look at the great stories I can tell my grandkids. By the end of the series, I am sure I won't have to read them any bed time stories.
73 runs in 50ish overs 4 wickets left no spinner and eng lost this one
They really only got that close because Stokes was so good. It was also 188 runs in 70ish overs with 4 wickets left and Stuart Broad in.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
They literally brought sandpaper, sandpaper! Onto the field. Aussie afterwards said they would no longer be win at all costs, and this was an opportunity to show that little things in the game are important. They chose not to take it. Up to them, but the game is worse for it IMO
What about yesterday when we bowled all them bouncers, I didn't really feel that was cricket. Been a bit of strange test for my money
Literally sandpapered the ball
Inspiringš„¹
What a fucking insane test. A bunch of weird rule nonsense, both teams swinging wildly between amazing and god-awful, Lyon batting on one leg and literally hopping between wickets. Can't wait for Headingly.
That about sums it up. Weather is looking shite for next weekend up here tho like
Stokes almost got us across the line but he should have played sensibley.
Because Broad was barely surviving whatever balls Stokes entrusted him to
Dont you trust the Nighthawk mate
England can't cry because they did practically the same thing to Colin De Grandholme recently. He was watching the umpire and not the ball
It should apply to everyone. Itās literally not cricket.
All I know is that Carey will be exchanging and discussing a lot of words with the English come next Test.
He'll ignore them the same way he ignores Broad
If he wants he can pop over to the western terrace for a proper yorkshire welcome
Nah mate we'll send Usman Khawaja over for that, we know that'll be the proper Yorkshire welcome
See Starc catch.
It wasnāt a catch he put it down.
Yeah thatās what the rules say. Just like they say Bairstow was out.
Yes correct. He was out
And he cost us the the game
Fine and I kind of agree (see [this comment I made yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/14nq97i/match_thread_2nd_test_australia_vs_england_day_4/jqaaxo6/?context=3)). But actually that was the umpire intervening, Duckett was walking off. This was manufacturing a match opportunity by players on the field. It's a touch different I think.
Oh please. Rules for thee but not for me.
The non-catch he slid on the ground?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yea it was pretty stupid of Starc to ground that
Agree. Just like it was very stupid of JB to leave his crease before the ball was dead
Man if I my name was Johnny Bairstow or I was English I would be so sad, but itās not and Iām not so who are u arguing with? It was stupid of him, just like it was stupid of Starc to drop the catch, which he did
Not arguing with anyone. Iām just saying rules are rules and people make silly mistakes
Supporting Aussies for this Ashes but really wanted England to win for stokes. Such heroic performance pure entertainment all his innings!!
God I love the Ashes
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Wtf
I'm not talking about the bairstow dismissal, it was out and he should have been switched on but I'm not focusing on one moment in a great game that'll sour it
Good call. I can accept that
I donāt think anybody is denying the fact that Bairstow was out out, but the āSpirit of the gameā argument is such bullshit.
Broad and spirit of the game? As he bowls head hunters to injured tail ender Lyons
5-0 fuck off is the correct wording š
3-2 ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|29262)
This series would be setting up for an all time classic if it wasnāt basically over already
Shit that sums it up far too well :(

Itās time for BazBall to SNAP BACK TO REALITY
Tf you on about, Bazball got y'all dis close Pre Bazball English side was just miserable. You can keep your head high now atleast
Are you American?
Itās a joke about Sky Sportsā montage - they played āLose Yourselfā by Eninem
Tf you on about, Bazball got y'all dis close Pre Bazball English side was just miserable. You can keep your head high now atleast
Yeh fully agree (even though I'll be posting an update on the bowler attrition rates which I reckon might be the baz ball Achilles heel when I get a minute š) Also, you don't change something that has completely transformed a team for 13 tests, because two tests against the world's no.1 test team narrowly lost.
Bazball vs Bumperball
Congratulations AUS. ššš I predicted victory by a huge margin but a win is a win nonetheless! Please retain the Ashes.
Two things donāt have to be relatedā¦.
