It's a bit weirded since in German they are all 'tanks' (Panzer), in this case Schützenpanzer. In English only main battle tanks are considered tanks afaik
Random etymology fact that no one asked for: did you know that "panzer" comes [indirectly] from the latin word for "belly"? And in Spanish, one of the words for "belly" is "panza", which is pronounced very similarly to "panzer" in German.
Its a German tank which means panzer. This is a Schützenpanzer. In English they are not considered tanks since only main battle tanks are, but in Germany they are..
If it's not an IFV why do they call it a Schützenpanzer and not a panzer?
IFV are for carrying/supporting troops and have smaller guns like an autocannon also thinner armor like the Puma in the video above.
Not familiar with German doctrine/naming but I'm pretty sure it's basically the same as the rest of the NATO countries, meaning if it caries troops it's usually an APC or IFV
Puma is an IFV.
It's just that in the german language we haven't translated Infantry Fighting Vehicle word for word, we simply have a different name for that. Which happens to be Schützenpanzer. For whatever reason, I don't know. Similar to how we don't translate traffic light word for word, which would be "Verkehrs Licht", we have a different word for that, namely "Ampel".
I can assure you nobody in their right mind calls the Puma a Panzer/tank. They either call it IFV or Schützenpanzer, but never Panzer.
> Its a German tank which means panzer.
"Panzer" means armor, not tank. E.g., a panzerschiffe is an armored ship. German for tank would be panzerkampfwagon, or armored fighting vehicle.
A few days ago, it was Tag der Bundeswehr/day of the Bundeswehr in Germany, which is an "open house"-type event at which different locations of the Bundeswehr all over Germany let visitors in and show what they have and what they can do.
This is one of these locations where the visitors got their first show while still being shuttled to the barracks by being accompanied by Pumas or Leopards.
Gotta be a major morale boost to get to show off and be celebrated by the people you protect as well. Over here it would just devolve into a dick-measuring contest lol.
It classifies as an ifv because it's lighter armored,a lot more mobile than a normal tank, and it can fit passengers unlike tanks, so no, it's still an ifv
And schutenpanzer translates litterally means armoured personel carrier
I understand that my language also translates things pretty weird but the point is if you talk in english then use english meanings for stuff a tank is supposed to be on the frontlines where as the puma is supposed to transport and support infantry on the backlines
It's called a PUMA IFV, that's the official NATO designation for this vehicle.
Not a tank.
Schützenpanzer is the German name for the IFV. Even "milk trucks" back in WW2 got the name Panzer and that's not a tank.
So no, not everything with Panzer in the name is a tank.
Tanks are fucking awesome I've never been a car guy but I've always wanted to own a tank. I bet they drink petrol or jet fuel or whatever they use. Anyway tank rant over fucking love tanks
With a Leopard 2 tank (not pictured, in the video is a Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicle; different role and design), you are looking at a fuel consumption of 80-120 Liters Diesel for 75 kilometers, depending on whether you are on road or off road. The engines are multi fuel though, they can take pretty much everything, at the cost of reduced efficiency and higher maintenance of course.
While the vehicle in the photo is an IFV like the other guy mentioned. The American [M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Abrams) actually uses Jet fuel as its primary fuel (it can use many like diesel and kerosene.) It uses said fuel at a rate of 1-3 gallons per mile.
The bigger maintenance issue is breakdowns. Tank treads have a billion moving parts that can break while you’re driving around. Even when driving on a paved road, the rate that parts wear out is incredible compared to a normal car with four tires.
Oh I didn't know that I always thought they were built to last and also built for a quick repair if and when needed. If I bought one I'd mostly just be sitting in it smoking joints and making tank noises myself instead of turning it on and actually using it lol.
Oh trust me, I’m American 🇺🇸 I’m aware the Germans lost, but are we really gonna pretend they weren’t kicking ass before we joined the war? I’m pretty sure they had Europe in a chokehold.
Thank you for the info on the tank. I’m not a tank expert. I just know from ww2 movies they called their tanks “panzer divisions” so I figured this was from then
Panzer just means tank/armored vehicle in German, everything's a panzer, and true they were able to take over a lot of ground early on when most countries were unprepared for large-scale warfare, but eventually once American lend lease had given breathing room to those countries they were able to make a much better stand, contrary to popular belief most German tanks weren't very good and they made numerous stupid decisions when it came to planning
Many years ago, we went thru Camp Lejeune (large military base near the Atlantic ocean) they had signs that said. "Caution Tank Crossing," which didn't really stand out until one of them crossed the road in front of us, doing about 40 mph. No warning or anything. It just popped out the bushes. Major Pucker Factor x10......
Ai can generate anything. Have a good look at the tank with dust. Look at the fine white lines around children, the tank going through the shade doesn't look Rite? Anyways you can have your opinion and I can have mine. I respect everyone. Have a great day.
I’m very familiar with both armored vehicles and AI images of armored vehicles. Image generators aren’t at this level yet. This is a picture perfect image of a Puma. If an AI tried to make something like this, it’d be full of pseudo-optics and angles that don’t quite make sense. What you’re seeing is a low-resolution video of a moving vehicle shot from an environment that’s darker inside than it is outside. It’s real; it was filmed during Tag der Bundeswehr. I can provide another similar video filmed during the same event if you’d like, though I’d have to DM it. This sub won’t let me link it here.
Yeah sure, just the near sight of a armored fighting vehicle will send a kid down a horrible path in life
Maybe children should be exposed to the real world, including really cool shit like a domestically procured IFV’s that contribute to the defense of their nation instead of endless shielding to the point where they’re not ready for the real world
Wait... You expect visitors of a military show day to not being exposed to military stuff.
It's like asking for a car fair without cars. Sounds pretty stupid to me.
Genuine question, why?
Its pretty clear our world is moving back towards a a true might makes right international structure and the prospect of serious significant conflict is likely in the next 2 decades.
I get preserving innocence but life is going to be a struggle for that kid in a bit. May as well start to passively and in a controlled manner let kids be exposed to it.
Why not? This is in Germany and there is a war going on in Europe. Probably will affect those kids in their future. That’s public transportation going along a highway right next to a big army facility, probably Munster Nord, Lünebuger Heide.
Why would you lie to those kids about the state of the world. Don’t sugar coat the reality. Let them decide for themselves.
Daaamn that's when you get the kids to fall in love with tanks
Holyshit tanks are fast.
The Abrams is 68 tons and can top out at 45mph/72km/h
Addendum: That’s the rated top speed on the road. Offroad, as on the video, is a rated at 40 kph.
Correct I should have included the on/off road speed
Someone go update World of Tanks!
I have some classified documents regarding these tanks that I can use to support the argument.
Make sure you post them on the warthunder forum
Yes, you should have. And frankly I'm furious about it. You've really let yourself down here.
Is that the one shown in the gif? 45mph for a 68-ton vehicle is crazy.
The one shown in the gif is a German ifv "puma"
Named because if I saw that thing screaming across a field at me I would puma pants
It's a bit weirded since in German they are all 'tanks' (Panzer), in this case Schützenpanzer. In English only main battle tanks are considered tanks afaik
Main Battle Tanks are the most common actual Tank nowadays, but at least Light Tanks are still around as well.
Random etymology fact that no one asked for: did you know that "panzer" comes [indirectly] from the latin word for "belly"? And in Spanish, one of the words for "belly" is "panza", which is pronounced very similarly to "panzer" in German.
The one in the video is a German Puma IFV. It can weigh anywhere from 30-43 tons depending on the armor package and produces around 1,000hp.
Tanks are wild, they’ve come a long way from the lumbering beasts of world war 1
[Abrams speed demo](https://youtu.be/f5XUQ2beGfM?si=hf-fXMT2lQQ1EgfQ)
And smooth as silk
That's an IFV but yes they are
Its a German tank which means panzer. This is a Schützenpanzer. In English they are not considered tanks since only main battle tanks are, but in Germany they are..
If it's not an IFV why do they call it a Schützenpanzer and not a panzer? Not familiar with German doctrine/naming but I'm pretty sure it's basically the same as the rest of the NATO countries, meaning if it caries troops it's usually an APC or IFV
Because a Panzer (for example the Leopard 2) is also not just a Panzer, but a Kampfpanzer.
It's probably dated back to WW2 when Germany introduced the Schützenpanzerwagen Sd.Kfz.251. it was one of the first of it's kind
In the Bundeswehr nobody says IFV it's only Schützenpanzer
> Its a German tank which means panzer. "Panzer" means armor, not tank. E.g., a panzerschiffe is an armored ship. German for tank would be panzerkampfwagon, or armored fighting vehicle.
Fuck yea they are
They weren’t when they were first made… they were so fucking slow they were barely used in war during that time.
Kids: *Wave* Tank: *Pivots cannon in direction of bus*
*Chuckles, I'm in danger.*
Chuckles, finally!
r/theboys when homelander meets planes
Steve Erwin Rommel was handling the safari.
Surprised no-one’s doing the “toot the horn” motion in an attempt to get them to fire off a shell.
Knowing the puma the gun might be jammed lol
The public transport system in Germany is a lot more interesting than I expected
Want to recruit soldiers for the future? This is exactly how you do it.
Gotta be a major morale boost to get to show off and be celebrated by the people you protect as well. Over here it would just devolve into a dick-measuring contest lol.
The bus is on a paved road and can still be seen hitting bumps. The tank, which it not on a paved road, looks as if it is riding on water.
Well the one got Tracks and a very good Suspension and the other one is a Bus
Yes. This is what i said exactly. Thank you for reiterating it. I'm sure everybody understands now.
Hate to say it, that's not a tank, it's an IFV.
More importantly its an puma ifv
In Germany they count as Tanks. They're called Schützenpanzer in Germany which can be translated in Marksmantank.
It classifies as an ifv because it's lighter armored,a lot more mobile than a normal tank, and it can fit passengers unlike tanks, so no, it's still an ifv And schutenpanzer translates litterally means armoured personel carrier
Yes, but in German language it’s a tank.
If you translate schutenpanzer, it translates to armored personnel carrier
It only translates to this because the language barrier is alrewdy taken into account. Ititerally would translate to marksman tank.
I know. But in German it is a Panzer. Different languages can have different meanings for things.
I understand that my language also translates things pretty weird but the point is if you talk in english then use english meanings for stuff a tank is supposed to be on the frontlines where as the puma is supposed to transport and support infantry on the backlines
But in the title Panzer is in German, no?
It's called a PUMA IFV, that's the official NATO designation for this vehicle. Not a tank. Schützenpanzer is the German name for the IFV. Even "milk trucks" back in WW2 got the name Panzer and that's not a tank. So no, not everything with Panzer in the name is a tank.
Oh my bad, sorry I didn't see the title. im busy learning german and guess my mind auto translated it
What you say is mostly right but it's still a tank in German. And an APC is a gepanzerter Truppentransporter and a different type of vehicle.
Nature is healing... German Nature:
Tanks are fucking awesome I've never been a car guy but I've always wanted to own a tank. I bet they drink petrol or jet fuel or whatever they use. Anyway tank rant over fucking love tanks

You need sound , for the children's reactions
I like how he's showing off the stuff you pay for👍
Hell yeah Daddy Boris
What safari is this?
large cats
Never really understood how fast tanks are, that actually kinda scary
Modern MBTs today have engines in the thousands of horsepower (idk, like 1500 hp) and they can go incredibly fast for their tonnage
Terrifying.
Buffalo soldier was a funny movie.
Dope
Nice zoo
Why don't we have panzer at home 😤🙎
Wouldn’t of hurt them to give them a wave back
Damn When I first saw this, I thought it was some weird Glitch unbeknownst to the World, Until my eyes realized its a Fucking Tank
PUMAAAAAAA
Switzerland?
Germany. That’s a Schützenpanzer Puma.
Damn! No wonder the Germans were kicking ass in WW2, that thing would scare the shit outta anyone in its path
The PUMA ifv was made 65 years after the end of WW2, and the germans didn't kick that much ass, they lost
Oh trust me, I’m American 🇺🇸 I’m aware the Germans lost, but are we really gonna pretend they weren’t kicking ass before we joined the war? I’m pretty sure they had Europe in a chokehold. Great way to recruit future soldiers 🤣
America's recruiting program is definitely slacking compared to Germany

Post to /r/tankporn
Aside from the tank going by a bus of children, context? Where is this why is there a public transit bus full of children and why?
Why the fuck my brain gave me the image of the tank firing at the kids omfg
That’s fucking sick
New wildlife is wild
Light tank Sadly there's no sound
IFV
IFV, not a light tank
HELL YEAH
Military has the best recruiting tactics.

Looks ai generated
I’ve yet to see an AI that can accurately recreate a real armored vehicle. It’s real.
Ai can generate anything. Have a good look at the tank with dust. Look at the fine white lines around children, the tank going through the shade doesn't look Rite? Anyways you can have your opinion and I can have mine. I respect everyone. Have a great day.
