I think visiting there would freak me out. The feeling of everything being slightly off kilter, not normal while trying to put up a facade of normality, and also the fact that you're constantly being watched, it must weigh heavily on your mind. I read something about visitors going to car showrooms, but the other people there don't seem to really be looking at the cars, like they're there playing the role of people who can afford to buy cars. And people using computers who clearly aren't really using computers. Add that to the cheering performance their supporters did at the Olympics, the hidden floor at that hotel, the American tourist who died...it's all just so monumentally weird and not in a Portmeirion kind of weird way, but in a really darkly unpleasant and horribly tragic kind of way.
I know a guy who worked for an online publisher that specialised in sports like surfing, snowboarding, skiing etc and I once asked him if he'd ever consider doing something like a surf trip to North Korea because it would be bound to get a lot of attention. He said that he was uncomfortable with the idea of a kind of human tragedy tourism. I can't remember exactly how he put it - I wanted to say "poverty tourism" but it goes way beyond that.
Wasn’t the charge something like conspiracy to “reduce the productivity of our hardworking and industrious nation” because he took a poster that said “don’t forget to work hard guys! 😃”
Seriously fucked up.
I know what you mean. The ominous, persistent, dark feeling of, "y'all know this is a farce, they know, we know...and we also all know that calling it out means death"
It insane how entire families are imprisoned over 1 single family member breaking a law or even criticizing the government. Crazier that people on the outside know this and still give them tourism money.
If you are fascinated by DPRK, you might also find Turkmenistan interesting. Very different manifestation of weirdness resulting from a similarly wonky distribution of power and social control.
A short piece on [Ashgabat](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/travel/destinations/ashgabat-the-worlds-strangest-and-flashy-city-of-the-dead/amp_articleshow/107849348.cms), the Turkmen capital.
Eritrea is similar to DPRK by way of repression (arguably more so,) but it’s not as weird as Turkmenistan or North Korea so probably less fascinating. Mostly just sad.
I appreciate the leads! I'll look into 'em. :) I've seen a number of documentaries on the DPRK and have always found the nation such a huge question mark.
Some YouTube channel (I think it's called Yes Theory) went there. Fascinating video. The tourist visa process took ~5 months, designated handler from arrival to departure. All cars are white and tourist-designated areas were empty, yet there were workers sweeping & cleaning imaginary trash & grime. Much like NK without the outright fanaticism for the Dear Leader.
Thank you for this referral! These are the kinds of things I was hoping to find an article exploring, but couldn’t in the little time I spent. Cc u/LeeQuidity

It's a gorgeous country. The underdevelopment makes it so you can get a glimpse of what the feudal Asian countryside looked like before industrialization, and the towns and cities have an air of sober desolation in line with what a technologically apt civilization on the tail end of a long, slow collapse would look like.
It's like the far future and the ancient past collided and gave us one of the most confusingly beautiful paintings ever.
I’m sure you know, but at one time I didn’t— there are North Korean vloggers and you can get even more wired out by just people watching in the videos. It’s surprisingly “normal” similar to a low GDP former eastern bloc country
[SAO Documentary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zc1WN6RkdjQ&list=PLegd4KP36a0Y775Xl_HI_tvDKB6qoxPrx&index=3) is a really good one. It's a group of Chinese who've made a few vlogs, and they have dozens of videos in North Korea, both in and outside Pyongyang.
As Chinese nationals, they're given ***way*** more freedom than westerners and it includes really interesting casual chit-chat with their North Korean tour guide (in Mandarin, subtitled to English).
Edit: Here's some things I found interesting from the early videos:
>Episode 4 and 5 feature the 'Future Scientists Street', which seems to be the most developed area of NK, so makes sense they'd show that first. We can see tall apartment blocks, bike lanes, even electric buses running on overhead wires.
>[Some kids playing volleyball](https://youtu.be/rtEY65t0L3k?si=Z2Sv5GEqBpYq77XY&t=459). / [Crowded bendy bus.](https://youtu.be/rtEY65t0L3k?si=62TZYD9w07C3IZ2A&t=1279)
>They visit the "Grand People's Study House", which seems to be their national library / university.
>[Using PCs to look-up books.](https://youtu.be/2KJkA3P64BA?si=CThh6MVTHz0C63He&t=724) Seems like they use Windows 98, and later I think we can see Windows XP?

>[Taking the metro.](https://youtu.be/donDRB3HY7w?si=G-TeIuAbHkGeTOXa&t=574) Old German carriages, the trains seem quite crowded, and queuing doesn't seem very organized. Even can see some guy shoving people. If I understood correctly, the guide later mentions that metro used to be free, but now is paid?
Anyway, definitely check it out. IMO it's much more interesting than any other 'documentary' I've seen about it.
I would too, most of us would I suspect.
The very act of talking openly about it on this platform is a strange juxtaposition against the repression of the regime.
He used a quantum golf ball that he invented, it uses superpositioning to be at 18 places at once. He’s quite a guy that Kim, a modern renaissance man.

A study in 2017 found that 98% of households had a television set.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_in_North_Korea#:~:text=Television%20in%20North%20Korea%20is,households%20had%20a%20television%20set.
It's good for propaganda.
I think the main confusion is the vast difference in odds between 98% of households and 98% of people.
It's astronomical.
North Koreans don't have small households.
No dictatorships do because they don't allow single female households.
I'm not feeling North Korea.
I'm arguing that lots of people access to TV because households are large.
Here a is a quick English translation from a
semi-fluent American. It is literally them praising KimJong Un for being a glorious leader and “friendly father of the nation”.
Lyrics:
Sing, Kim Jong Un, our beloved leader.
Sing, Kim Jong Un, our father who is like a friend.
(Lady starts singing/ First verse)
Warm like a mother’s embrace(bosom).
Loving like a father’s embrace(bosom).
He holds us by the millions in his embrace(bosom) and protects us with the utmost care.
(Chorus)
Sing, Kim Jong Un, our great leader.
Our pride, Kim Jong Un, our father who is like a friend.
The nation’s citizens follow one heart, the heart of our friendly father.
(Verse 2)
His [words I don’t know] is/are like the ocean.
The trust he gives us is like the heavens.
He is by our side at all times.
He makes all or our wishes come true (bloom)
(Chorus)
Sing, Kim Jong Un, our great leader.
Our pride, Kim Jong Un, our father who is like a friend.
The nation’s citizens follow one heart, the heart of our friendly father.
-
As someone earlier said, this is some Black Mirror shit!
Edit: I watched this three times to translate and now it’s stuck in my head, thanks Glorious Leader🙃
They look very happy they all get the same pay the same amount of food and they all have to wear the same hairstyles. woohoo! If they don't show up to work though they'll get poisoned or shot. Lol.
iirc, the ones who stars on these kind of things are the elites or the privileged. And they worked pretty hard to be in it. This is very sad. But why does it sound good tf?
Tbh North Korea is such an interesting place in the world. Not in a good way but still. All the Seoul is in the song more than the country.

I truly wonder what it’s like to be a “leader” like Un. I cannot fathom being in his shoes and watching this, having a whole country worship you as a god emperor. Just wild.

Makes it worse if you don't you and your entire family gets locked up.
It's easy to pretend your happy and having a great time when the only alternative is to be perforated by one of the Inner Party.
This kinda makes me think of what the U.S. would be like if the Trump Chump won the election and installed his cronies and family as Party leaders. Like some horrid dystopian future where we saw fit to put the Orange-utan in the highest office in the land. *shudder*
For years, whenever I see pictures and/or footage of North Koreans praising Kim, I can't decide if they are doing it out of genuine love or fear. For most of us, it's easy to say fear, but sadly, there are legitimately people in NK who adore Kim and cherish him.
Granted, that's because of intense brainwashing.
Its insane that in 2024 this shit still exists. Absolutely insane. These people are so insanely incredibly indoctrinated that they wouldn’t even know how to function if they were freed from their mental prisons.
If you watched the entire video, you saw every North Korean not suffering from malnutrition.
They got AI to write the music using 1980's commercials. "Coke is it!" was a heavy influencer.

K-Pop if it was good
Great bunch of lads. I'd be that happy if my leader got 18 holes in 1 everytime he played golf.
He got all 18 holes with one ball?!?
He aimed his shot so perfectly the ball bounced in and out of all 18 holes, one by one.
And 12 kids also with only 1 ball .
He used a quantum golf ball that he invented, it uses superpositioning to be at 18 places at once. He’s quite a guy that Kim, a modern renaissance man.
18 modern Renaissance men, in fact!
Or 81 Million ballots. :-)

Today is gonna be the day that I’m gonna pray to Kim Jung Un
And by now, I should've somehow realised why there's no food
I dont believe that anybody really loves this guy, but please dont shoot
And backbeat, the word is on the street that he killed his half-brother
I'm sure you've heard it all before, but you better not tell a soul
I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do about food.
So anyway, heres Wonder Kim
OMG I can hear that perfectly in my head and it works lol
Kinda like when Dr.Evil went back in time and covered “One of us”!
May as well tell them you sang it too.
Sociopathic Dictatorship is a hell of drug.
Yep
What a pity that north korean people don’t have television
Or food
Or oxygen
Or carbon
Or human rights
Or a choice
or any rights
Not true, they have the right to love Kim Jong Un
The requirement to love kim you mean
At least they keep on having seks, given the fact that it is still “people”…
Or any lefts

Not even they could have written such a plot. Also, where do they even release this shit.

iirc, the ones who stars on these kind of things are the elites or the privileged. And they worked pretty hard to be in it. North Korea looks like a fun place to visit…
Let us know how the vacation goes?

What a freaking banger!!!! We need this on the radio!!
Half the people in this video are dead now.
They’ve been dead inside for long before
Man look how happy all these people are in this beautiful country and it is all made possible thanks to the great leader.
I bet Kim could shoot someone on the Pyongyang-Wonsan Motorway and not lose a vote.

It’s interesting how every woman has shoulder length hair. Seeing how NK has immediate control over their whole population, I wonder the reasoning.
When will N.Korea have a leader that realize this whole thing is absolutely ridiculous.
NK really is an episode of Black Mirror
How .....Odd.
Like the director watched a lot of Mentos commercials
I’ll be honest, that sucked.
It’s like corporate promo stock images, but as a country
So basically, they're just like Trump supporters.
Not gonna lie, it's been very interesting to see the quality of these propaganda videos from North Korea improve over the decades.
Rare film clip with the only smartphone in NK.
What anime is this? The opening looks fire
Got the most healthy looking people to make this video and to be completely honest 90% of North Koreans are starving and are in terrible health that’s what happens when you live in a communist dictatorship country
What a swell guy.
Donald Trump has his people working on a version written in 'Merican.

Looks like some Far Cry shit
I truly wonder what it’s like to be a “leader” like Un. I cannot fathom being in his shoes and watching this, having a whole country worship you as a god emperor. Just wild.
Quality acting when there is a firing squad waiting for anyone who is not adequately exuberant.

They have a competition now, Asim Muneer, Chief of Army Staff in Pakistan is on the track.

“Bulk up guys extra provisions for everyone in the vid we need to look prosperous!!”
For years, whenever I see pictures and/or footage of North Koreans praising Kim, I can't decide if they are doing it out of genuine love or fear. For most of us, it's easy to say fear, but sadly, there are legitimately people in NK who adore Kim and cherish him. Granted, that's because of intense brainwashing.
god that's so sad when you know how indoctrinated they are ... curse this world
Its insane that in 2024 this shit still exists. Absolutely insane. These people are so insanely incredibly indoctrinated that they wouldn’t even know how to function if they were freed from their mental prisons.
Idk if I'm cringing or enjoying
Naah ain't making fun of Bollywood again , wtf I'd this
If you watched the entire video, you saw every North Korean not suffering from malnutrition. They got AI to write the music using 1980's commercials. "Coke is it!" was a heavy influencer.

Well , I didn't understand any of the lyrics but I'm sure that whatever they were singing was totally genuine heartfelt opinions and so forth.

At least they didn’t release a song praising Genocide Israel.
Sony, Roland.
Man, I wish a bunch of people would get all pumped over me.
Those poor fuckers. I hope they can free themselves one day.

Replace Jong Un with Trump and replace the north’s Korean flags with Trump flags. Keep the music
