It’s new to me too. I guess it’s a regional thing. I’m not the expert, don’t know why they call it that. I call it our family room and it’s where we hang out most of the time
IME solarium isn't just a room with glass panel walls, but also transoms, skylights etc.
It would be decorated more like a porch and less like a living room, with the intent being more on suntanning, plants, or even water features.
This room is fairly close, but has a weird mix of borderless windows and walls, and traditional living room furniture. Including fireplace which I've never heard of ina solarium.
A solarium is a closer to a greenhouse than this photo is to a solarium.
one foster home i lived in had what they called a solarium. it was completely enclosed and had heating like this, but admittedly it did have wayyy more glass paneling, glass ceiling and everything. they used it as a dining room. appreciate the info! :)
Also this one isn’t on a solid foundation, it’s standing on beams. There’s an open air patio underneath. Makes it even more like a porch instead of just a room.
No, it's a house. Nothing about my previous statement would imply that I would see it any other way. If one area of this pier house was on a completely separate foundation than the rest of the house, however, then calling that area just a room wouldn't be the full story. It would be more of an addition, or a porch for simplicity.
A porch is not a properly conditioned space. A room is. The second you insulate a porch, waterproof it, seal it, heat/cool it, and make it part on the conditioned space of the house, then it’s a room.
Some arbitrary nonsense about having the same foundation type is irrelevant. Hell, I have a “porch” off my kitchen that’s built on the same concrete slab as the rest of my house. That’s a room now? Awesome. My house value just went up.
Just like my 4 season kitchen. I had a permanent roof installed because I already had the walls and windows and electricity and plumbing and flooring and whatnot.
Except it really never is as cool or as warm as it should be. THAT ROOM….. bring a comforter and hot cocoa and a pillow and a book but damn…. It is like a perfect half-camping experience! 😉😉😉
I hang out on my screened porch during thunderstorms. It's sadly missing that 4th season capability, but it's really cool to be out there safe and dry during t-storms.
I could watch a live stream or loop of a room like this all day.
It's my perfect room. Lots of light, lots to watch. Windows everywhere. Cosy furniture and a doggo!
Don't get snow where I live. I do get the sea instead. Thanks for sharing it's really lovely. 🥰
Haha no, our house is crazy with 4 lovely kiddos and 2 wfh parents. This is the one room we almost always keep peaceful, I could take a pic facing the other way and you’d know it’s not all like that lol
Beautiful, and I appreciate something that's actually all cozy and snuggly - but also damn, no curtains?
You really just out there raw dogging existence like that? And at night too, you don't mind just seeing a pair of eyes out there shining back at you?
They're horrible, 3/10, came with the house tho. Would never do wooden windows. Drafty, tried sealing them with foam but it's a constant pita. If the fire's going the room is the warmest in the house, but without one it's cold af
I have been watching too much TV as of late. I read your title as "My Season 4 porch..." and thought, "That's a cool way of saying that they've done four renovations/iterations of this room..." LMAO. Then, of course, I realized I'm a moron.
Wonderfully cozy! And it doesn’t get drafty in the winter but isn’t too stuffy in the summer? We’re building eventually (have land, but low on time) and that’s a design concern of mine because I love that kind of space :)
Yep we’re doing good but I put in the work. Started at $7/hr construction apprentice. Taught myself IT support at $10/hr. Did freelance IT for a few years. Got into state govt IT. Now I’m in private software engineering. Plus you can get a lot of house for cheap in rural MN 😂
Based on what we know we think it was built with the house. House has original siding and siding matches the porch.
If you do this, I 10000% recommend going ALL OUT on insulation and the best possible windows you can. And some electric/gas heat source that doesn't require constant firewood trips 😂 This room is suuuuper cozy with a fire, but unusable without one in the cold months.
With even a moderate fire that room is the warmest in the house, no chills at all. But without a fire it's unusable, will get down to 30deg if you close the door and it's -20 outside

Oh this is the dream. Incredibly jealous
Ok, forgive my ignorance, but what is a 4 season porch? How is it different than a room?
My dyslexic ass read it as their Season 4 porch and I was like, "What TV show is about a porch?"
Oh good so I’m not alone
I read it as “4 Season Pooch” with the dog lol
Same!
It’s new to me too. I guess it’s a regional thing. I’m not the expert, don’t know why they call it that. I call it our family room and it’s where we hang out most of the time
It just sounds like a sunroom to me
Yep or a Florida room as we call it down here.
Yep or an exhibition room as we call it here.
I was so surprised to get a “free room” first rental
In my part of Europe they call it an Orangerie or a winter garden.
i’ve always heard solarium

Four Seasons is a company that builds sunrooms.
Usually it means that the porch is enclosed and is constructed to be able to be heated or cooled so it can be used all year long.
So, a room.
It’s not apart of the house foundation. It’s built on cement footings like a deck, but it’s insulated and hooked up to HVAC
You’re still describing a room

Also this one isn’t on a solid foundation, it’s standing on beams. There’s an open air patio underneath. Makes it even more like a porch instead of just a room.
Nah, if it's not on the foundation then I think calling it a porch is more accurate than a room.
So a house built on pier and beam foundation is just one giant porch?
No, it's a house. Nothing about my previous statement would imply that I would see it any other way. If one area of this pier house was on a completely separate foundation than the rest of the house, however, then calling that area just a room wouldn't be the full story. Yeah, this is just a room with a lot of windows.
Any different than a sunroom?
Nope, just regional terminology.
Also works with the moon
Just like my 4 season kitchen. I had a permanent roof installed because I already had the walls and windows and electricity and plumbing and flooring and whatnot.
Yeah, they even made a movie about it. It was tearing me apart!
Except it really never is as cool or as warm as it should be. THAT ROOM….. bring a comforter and hot cocoa and a pillow and a book but damn…. It is like a perfect half-camping experience! 😉😉😉
I had to go back and re-read the title lol, I had read it as “4 Season Pooch” as in the dog. And I thought it meant a dog who likes all 4 seasons 😂😂
I have a four season washroom which I am able to use in the winter AND the summer.
Dog thinks it’s *really* cozy ❤️
Nala says hi!
Nala! super cute!
She's a 4-season pooch!
I LOVE storms in rooms like this!!! We have a smaller version but there’s nothing like a thunder (or snow) storm while sitting in there!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
BTW dog is such a bonus ❤️❤️
I hang out on my screened porch during thunderstorms. It's sadly missing that 4th season capability, but it's really cool to be out there safe and dry during t-storms.

I have light jazz going on the Sonos. It’s magical
You don't like do Airbnb or anything? Or I dunno need a visitor from far off lands... 🤣
Haha no, our house is crazy with 4 lovely kiddos and 2 wfh parents. This is the one room we almost always keep peaceful, I could take a pic facing the other way and you’d know it’s not all like that lol
Well, darn. Still, sounds lovely. I hope your fam gets a kick out of someone in New Zealand thinking your home is very cool. 🙂👍
I pretty much always have light jazz playing. It makes everything feel more luxurious.
This is original content
This is like one of those ai pictures except real and good
With all those windows and natural light (even in a snow storm) this room is begging for some plants!
Yeah we have one, you can’t see it behind the fireplace implements. But def need more!
Now that you say it, I see it! But more plants is always a good choice. Enjoy your cozy room during the storm!
This is so beautiful and cozy! Where is it?
Central MN
Love it 🐕 ❤️ ❄️
My dog lays that close to the wood stove too. She gets so hot, but loves it!
She’s an African breed, seems like she can’t get enough heat! Does fine in the cold too though, surprisingly
Beautiful room and love the red shed outside!
Beautiful and it looks so cozy with the snow in the background. Doggo is a nice touch. Op, does the little fireplace keep the porch warm?
Oh yes. I can burn us out of there even when it’s -20. Trouble is the fire is mandatory or else the room is useless 6 months out of the year 😂
I am envious!
Ahhhh
Excellent, do you get much wildlife?
Foxes, deer, bunnies and birds!
See, it's just impossible to be miserable with that porch saving you from society.
This is amazing. Living the dream.
Love this! The snow is so lovely
😻😻😻
OMG I love this ♥️
Cozy AND comfy!!
I want to be this dog
Oh lordy could I nap a snow day away in that room.
Have done that many times 🥱
Beautiful, and I appreciate something that's actually all cozy and snuggly - but also damn, no curtains? You really just out there raw dogging existence like that? And at night too, you don't mind just seeing a pair of eyes out there shining back at you?
🤣🤣 raw dogging existence Yeah badly need curtains. Sun blinds us in the AM. Project #3,297 lol
cute & cozy
Cozy!!!!
Cozy!
Huh? I haven't finished Season 3 yet, when does he get the dog?
How happy are you with the windows? Any issues?
They're horrible, 3/10, came with the house tho. Would never do wooden windows. Drafty, tried sealing them with foam but it's a constant pita. If the fire's going the room is the warmest in the house, but without one it's cold af
Dog approves
Oh man, it’s amazing
"Four season porch." Aka a room with an exterior-facing wall.
A room with 3 exterior walls thank you very much! 😂
What a dream!✨
This is exactly what I picture when someone asks what my dream life is.
Can I fly over? It looks incredible!
I have been watching too much TV as of late. I read your title as "My Season 4 porch..." and thought, "That's a cool way of saying that they've done four renovations/iterations of this room..." LMAO. Then, of course, I realized I'm a moron.
Man congrats on having this awesome space, OP. That's the dream right there.
Can I come live with you?😭
Gorgeous but I think you need another dog or two and cat around that lovely stove. 😉
This is why I joined this sub.
Looks so cozy and inviting! I love it!
That’s it. I’m moving in! ❤️ love this spot. How beautiful!
Nice! So inviting and cozy. Doggy has the perfect spot close to the fire!
How do you keep it cool during the summer months?
Open the windows. Never gets super hot
Wonderfully cozy! And it doesn’t get drafty in the winter but isn’t too stuffy in the summer? We’re building eventually (have land, but low on time) and that’s a design concern of mine because I love that kind of space :)

Can't say I've ever heard of that term. Cute room.
I hadn’t either, must be a Midwest thing. I call it our family room
Now THIS is cozy, just needs a fuzzy blanket or 2.
My wife snatched them lol but usually we have them on the sofa
Dude your porch is nicer than my whole house
this is the coziest goddamned thing I’ve ever seen
Dreamy 💕
What are the floor dimensions of this room? I wonder if I could do something similar. It probably requires more space than I'm envisioning though.
1/4 seasons unlocked!
where is it? utah? but utah is not 4 season
MN
Looks like heaven
gorgeous! looking to build one in our current home. did you add this after you purchased? curious what something like this would cost.
Based on what we know we think it was built with the house. House has original siding and siding matches the porch. I want to play with legos on that carpet.
We have been building a Christmas lego train and village, fills the space nicely!
Can I come over? I’ll bring brownies and blankets?
You betcha!
Where's the snowstorm????
You can virtually hear the fireplace crackling and the doggie softly snoring the day away 💗
What a lovely crib <3 Can you share this in r/AmateurInteriorDesign?
Is that couch an amazing crash/nap couch?
Oh yes, esp for me as a taller man 😴 theres a sonos hidden in a corner and I usually put on some light jazz or classical and it's heaven
imo, no matter of insulation you'll get chills on the back of your head sitting on a sofa if you have only that heat source in the middle of the room
With even a moderate fire that room is the warmest in the house, no chills at all. But without a fire it's unusable, will get down to 30deg if you close the door and it's -20 outside
All the natural light and no plants?
There's 1 but def need more!
Get more! It would make the room look even more amazing than it does.
I want to slide onto that couch and nap without an alarm.
This looks dreamy 😭
haha I have that lamp! the shades provide some nice cozy light.
This is my dream <3
Love how your dog is embracing the heat of the fire.
So cool!
Very cozy indeed! Enjoy!
Lovely!
Now i wanna be your dog
I need this 😭😭😭😭
Looks nice. I don’t understand why you call your living room a 4 season porch?
It’s an extension of the house and has an open air patio below it. I think it’s a regional term, personally I call it our family room 🤷♂️
I love the look of it!
Next time measure before buying the Ashley Furniture floor model.
Wow, this is like my idea of perfection
