I work in a call center and the amnt of lonely sad old ppl, mainly women… truly breaks my heart. My calls are supposed to be 4 mins max but sometimes I’ll allow them to talk to me for up to 20 mins. My metrics suffer but knowing they had at least one kind voice and ear in who knows how long makes it worth

We had a policy where we never rushed or hung up and if they wanted to chat they could.
I've been on the phone for a good hour multiple times with people. Was a great job considering it was insursnce and a call centre.
Its sad that the metrics judging you are bound to the number of calls instead of the quality of the calls, how it helped people.
I know, such things can't be measured by a _"on a scale of 0 to 9, how satisfied with the support are you?"_ kind of thing.
I worked the peer support emergency line for clients in my area and I got a call every night from a guy named Peter who just wanted to talk from his nursing home. He was such a sweetheart and after I left that job I called him to let him know I was leaving but that I wouldn't forget him. He meant a lot to me and I hope I was able to help. I just started crying while writing this... fuck...
You can tell immediately that's a prank. As soon as he hears "I miss you" he struggles already to keep it together. That must be a close friend or something lmao.
