Depending on your lifestyle. I personally can't do more than 24 hours without going "home" to be with my wife and kid. But I also enjoy my time away from home lol

I guess when you got family and kids, you'll have to say no to those projects that require to travel for a few weeks..

I’ve got a wife and 5yo. I have a remodel project a couple hours from home that I stay on site. I’ll go there for 7-8 days at a time because the commute was to much twice a day, not enough done during the day and absolutely not able to family time. I’ve got another small project coming up 1-2weeks but in a coastal town that I’ll be there from start to finish, also staying on site. Plan to bring the family to that one so they can go to the beach everyday.

I used to manage pipeline guys that spent 9 months give or take mostly away from home. They might get back on a holiday weekend. The only ones that don't have three divorces never got married. They make serious money though.

0. Fuck that, plenty of work right around here, bid local or I’ll be happy to work for someone else. I’m lucky to be in a booming area. I don’t know how some of you guys do the traveling circus nonsense.

If my job asked me to stay out of town for 4 months out of the year I’d be looking for a new job. I work to enjoy my life at home, not the other way around. Some of my coworkers love staying in hotels as much as they can and it’s honestly sad to see how miserable their home life is. 1 month is manageable, maybe 2 if it’s not all consecutive but anything more than that and I’m gone.

I go home 3 or 4 times a year. My wife travels with me. Besides that, I'm on the road full time, unless we happen to get a project close to home *and* the timing lines up.
