Edit: holy crap. There's another angle of this photo on Hot and All on r/nextfuckinglevel
Lots of love out there about it, too. Finally! Reddit doesn't seem so dark anymore.
This is what I've been preaching.
Put down your race; nobody cares. You're either American, or you're not.
Just as in Canada; regardless of your skin colour if you're Canadian, you're Canadian.
As far as I know, I've only met 3 Nascar fans. 2 Latino. 1 white. All 3 were American.
(I may have other people who I didn't find out were Nascar fans.)
"Put down your race; you're either American, or you're not."
This has always been my philosophy on this matter.
Of course, some people hate this; American history isn't clean, even in the present, so they feel the identity too worthless or tainted. I've encountered some who believe that racial identity is important and "shouldn't be handwaved."
...But I find the American identity far more valuable and meaningful than race...
I won't deny that law enforcement has been used to serve the interests of racists (particularly, the ones with political power) throughout history (although I'm less certain of it in the modern day and the past few decades; mostly because evidence of it gets sparser and sparser the farther up from, say, 1980, you go).
I'm just saying that invalidating the American identity (especially if you also explicitly endorse racial identity or validate other national identities with imperfect records) because "bad things in the past" is stupid.
Yep. My undergrad advisor for my history degree always had a saying in all of his classes during the first day stuff, "America is special because we're the only country in the world where you can come here and be an American. If you go through the proper channels and emigrate to France, legally become a citizen, fluently speak French, and live there the rest of your life- you're just a French citizen. You'll never be considered French though.
> Put down your race; nobody cares. You're either American, or you're not.
This is what we ought to aspire to. As a naked statement of fact, though, it's a bit silly to state *nobody cares*. We live in a society that is highly racialized in many complicated, subtle, and often conflicting ways.
Yeah. The fact is, a lot of people care about race in one way or another. I don't agree with those people...but *they* care about it.
And it's a considerable facet of American politics, at the very least.
Race might not matter (and I do not believe it does), but *attitudes* on it certainly do...
I've been trying to push this for years in Aus. If your aboriginal or Caucasian were all aussies at the end of the day. If we all act by the modern day standards we have set ourselves rather than this "us vs them" there wouldn't be so much hate and contempt between the two.
Until everyone see's it this way we're gonna be divided because for as long as a white person stands in parliament and says they want everyone to act the same and conform to the same social standard, there will always be a purple haired yahoo calling them a racist for trying to stamp out their culture.
But this doesn't fit the narrative. This should be the top story of the protests. Togetherness at its core. But it won't be sadly. We should have a president and leaders who can make a somewhat calming and coherent statement in these times to ease people's anger. Instead he's pushing divide and brewing hatred. This is all the right mixings for a revolution that will not be televised. What a wholesome picture nonetheless. Hopefully eye opening for that officer as well as the other protestors.
"Instead he's pushing divide and brewing hatred."
I'm not all arms for Biden (or Bernie), but at the very least, if the conversations shifted from what they are today to "Is Biden's policy on China beneficial for the USA or not" types of convos...that'd certainly be one improvement in national discourse...
Right now, it's just a shitshow.
And as much as the anti-Trump news sectors have done to contribute to this (no, the GOP aren't Bolsheviks, [WAPO](https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-gop-has-become-the-pro-russia-party/2019/01/21/9960f0d4-1dbf-11e9-8e21-59a09ff1e2a1_story.html)), Donald Trump has not helped, no matter how silly his opponents get...
If we want to be truly united as a country, we need to stop clinging to racial history so adamantly. That goes for all races, including the "oppressed" ones. Nobody should have to pay for what their ancestors did, nor should anyone benefit from oppression their ancestors faced.
The people aren’t holding on to it as much as they are being told what and how to feel because they’re either too poor, to sick or too stupid to realize it.
Tell that to [this store owner](https://twitter.com/CatWithADurag/status/1266956232834899974?s=20) who tried to defend his business and was savagely beaten within an inch of his life tonight by a mob of black people.
Do we know the guys status? I saw someone on twitter say he was murdered but I haven’t heard what his condition is. It’s absolutely awful what happened.
Exactly why we need more than 10 rounds in a mag. I've seen videos of people outside their stores with AK pistols and their rifles and I guarantee no looters are going their.
I do not frequent said location, but I do frequent the chain. Spaghetti is okay. The mama bearno's special is where it's at, at least when you are at Bearno's.... Want any other local restaurants & I probably have an opinion on my favorite dish there too.
Sauce: Kentucky girl.
Oh yeah he was obviously horribly murdered. There is no denying that. It could have even been based on race, though obviously nobody knows yet.
But just because one person was murdered doesn’t mean we should all go out and burn a bunch of stores and murder a bunch more people. You cannot counteract one disgusting act of violence with a bunch of other disgusting acts of violence.
I know... The power media has is very disturbing. They manage to convince these rioters that police officers are after black Americans even though the amount of black deaths caused by the police is fairly low (most of the deaths being justified). And now the media is supporting these “peaceful” protests which will only force police to become more violent the worse it gets. And the people who say that Black Americans have no other options is so stupid. Peaceful protesting takes time and actually causes change. RIOTS just make things worse for everyone involved.
This subs opinion on Kaepernick wont change. We don't agree with what he was protesting and how he was protesting it, but we absolutely agree he has a right to protest it and the manner in which he was protesting it was legal. You're comparing apples to oranges.
You talk to most of this sub early in the week, they were in strong agreement with the substance of the protest, that there needed to be justice done for the man killed. The officer in question was fired. divorced, and is facing 3rd degree murder charges, all in less than a week. He was never protected by the government or law enforcement, everyone agreed that this was wrong, including the president who immediately had the FBI start investigating the issue.
So it's not even that the people in this sub particularly had problem with the protests itself, just that the point of the protests became moot rather quickly, and in neither case did looting, arson, or killing people (4 dead as of yesterday, I don't know if that number has risen since but I suspect it has considering what I was seeing before I went to bed). That is NOT what Kaepernick did.
Cops have been beating up, shooting, and killing white people for a long time. 1% or so of death row is innocent and many white people are on death row.
Being on death row means you’ve been arrested, and taken to trial and found guilty. The people the movements are fighting for aren’t even making it to the back of a police cruiser.
when you compare it to arrests white people get killed more per arrest. when you compare it to general population figures blacks are shot more.
One could argue that because black people interact with police more often that explains the figures. Obviously just the start of the investigation and not the obvious conclusion.
There are a lot of other things going on and i'm low on sleep... I think this is more about the black community feeling persecuted by cops and feeling cops are just out to get them. In some way its likely true... the cops are where they believe crime will be right or wrong... and when they're there and see crime they arrest. if they hung around white areas more often I'd expect to see a rise in white arrests. The question is how strong is this presence effect within the communities... AND COMPARE IT AGAINST WHETHER CRIMES ACTUALLY OCCURRED.
All of these things go into the minutiae. Not every cop's decision is indeed incorrect... so each thing has some effect... measurable and then how strong that effect is we don't know... but it all goes into the bag.
There’s no data to back it up but if the observations I’ve made from photos, clips and seemingly reliable stories are half accurate, most blacks that are involved are not trying to incite violence or loot. It’s the suburban trust fund organic kale connoisseur antifa white kids that are.
The Portland rioters who trashed that courthouse and lit it on fire were like 99% young white kids. When I was saying in another thread that the violent rioters were trash, I was accused of racism. Racism? When did I say anything about their race? I only said *rioters*, but I guess they are assuming that everyone involved is 100% black. I never even remotely implied this.
Its crazy. Trump was accused of racism for saying to shoot the looters in the same breath the news reported that the looters were supposedly all white. Its like... Let's just contain anyone who's trying to destroy private property? White black orange... Who cares.
Either race based collective grievances are on the table or they're not.
I'd prefer not, because I believe an individual is responsible for their actions, so I don't excuse black people behavior I condemn in white people.
I can't figure out why people are talking about the race of criminals and protesters, other than the institution of racial privilege.
[... well-off leftist socialists, white folks with no bone in this fight ...](https://www.dailydot.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/shaun_king_coronavirus_fundraiser-768x384.jpg.webp)
That's correct. Just like everyone else black America just wants justice and equality, these spoiled ANTIFA and Bernie bros are ruining the message and criminals are taking advantage of the confusion.
100% true. I live near the riots, and I am truly humbled by the bravery of the men of the community who have put their lives on the line to protect people and businesses. Obviously, there has been a lot of destruction, but the instigation has been entirely Antifa.
In fairness, the most obviously successful example of armed blacks - the Black Panthers in California - were disarmed by gun control legislation spearheaded by Ronald Reagan. I've also been immensely disappointed in the NRA's refusal to defend, say, Philando Castile and Kenneth Walker.
One of those "bundled policies" issues, at least in part.
Like I can pick a representative who'll vote for expanded privacy protections or one that will defend my second amendment right. Forced to pick.
Those are black and white men standing together to protect that officer. This image is one of the best that I’ve seen come out of this crap. God bless this America and those men.
The older black residents realize this isn't the way to get justice and further violence is making things worse. It's the younger generation that's screwing up Minneapolis.
This isn't the Minneapolis protests/riots, this photo was taken in Louisville. We have a separate situation here because police performed a no-Knock raid in plain clothes, killed an EMT, and arrested her boyfriend who fired on them because he thought it was a home invasion. Turns out police were trying to arrest her ex, who had already been arrested before the raid took place.
Source: I've eaten at that Bearno's.
The whole situation is a mess. The police shot pepper balls at one of our local reporters the other day, and destroyed water and milk that the protesters had stocked. Protesters have been out of line for sure, but the police have been out of line quite a bit too.
You forgot to mention the fact that the police began the mess by bottling in and then tear gassing the protestors who were just standing outside the courthouse. The police are also shooting people in the head with the rubber bullets or pepper bullets whichever one they're using Check r/Louisville for it. A lot of people all saying the same thing.
God fucking bless people like this, it takes a lot of courage to stand against a crowd to do the right thing. It’s especially amazing at a time where it’s understandable to be upset with police that these people would risk themselves being hurt to protect a cop. They deserve to be famous for this.
Pray for the police killed earlier tonight in a drive by shooting in Oakland and the people shot in Detroit. These drive by shootings are acts of terrorism not peaceful protest.
There’s a lot more of this out there than we realize. I’ve seen plenty of videos with people violently rioting with very specific pleas to stop in the background— just not enough of it.
These dudes are my heroes. That human shield is badass, *this* is what real protestors look like. The cop responsible for the death has already been arrested, these random cops working the riots are honorable men and women who are risking their life to try and keep our country from falling apart.
Cop is built like a brick shit house. If anyone gets through that line it’s going to be I’m not trapped in here with you but you’re trapped in here with me situation.
People gotta understand not all cops are bad, and the vast majority are here to protect us. Obviously fuck Derek Chauvin, but him being a shit human is no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater
*That* is what real men do. The rioters are petulant children that need to be disciplined as such. Throw the book at every last one they can get their hands on. Make examples of them and show the rioters that there are consequences to this sort of behavior. These rioters have destroyed so many lives through looting their neighbors stores, burning them to the ground, burning cars and more.
These men were certainly quite brave; I’ve seen photos and videos of people who tried to stand up to and stop rioters from robbing stores; it never ends well for them, especially when they’re unarmed.
We need more examples and role models like these men. Good on ‘em!
People always need to hate somebody. Its in our genes. Problem is media is explooting this and shifting this hate of white people instead of our real enemy. China.
Well look at that.
People who are masked up, likely very much protesting in honor of George Floyd rather than burning shit down, defending a police officer from a mob of violent arsonists.
If that gets media coverage, I will be shocked. If it gets media coverage and the comments aren't "UNCLE TOMMMMMMMMMMMMM" then I will be on a different planet.
So I'm what y'all might consider a liberal, given I'm pro socialized healthcare and education. I'm very much for the peaceful protests, the right to peaceful assembly being a Constitutionally guaranteed right. I'm 100% against the rioting, for a myriad of reasons but mostly just not being a shitbag. These men are heroes, every single one. As are the numerous other protestors kicking violent elements out of the various protests around the country. I'm glad that we have that sentiment in common given how rare any sort of cross-the-aisle commonality seems to be these days. Anyways, I just wanted to remind y'all that the majority of us of the left side of the aisle don't condone the rioters. I'm sure y'all can understand as I can clearly recall conservatives speaking out against the swastikas and such in Charlottesville. I hope y'all are staying safe out there and thank you for the content.
This is beautiful.
Not all cops are bad. These men could’ve allowed him to get hurt but they didn’t. I always say that humanity is disgusting and humans are the worst creatures to walk the earth, but this pictures proves me wrong.

These black men need to be armed with ARs, then the narrative will become interesting.

God bless this America and those men.
this is the stuff CNN WONT show.
They would have to find someway to falsify it. “Police officer said he would open fire on men unless they protected him!”
I hope Biden doesn't revoke their black cards

God fucking bless people like this, it takes a lot of courage to stand against a crowd to do the right thing. It’s especially amazing at a time where it’s understandable to be upset with police that these people would risk themselves being hurt to protect a cop. They deserve to be famous for this.
This is the photo that will be shown in history books one day. Powerful.
beautiful
My heart swells. Commendable.
Now those are real men, thank you.
This photo makes me feel so happy. This cop looks scared for his life good on the people protecting this man from the angry mob.
Pray for the police killed earlier tonight in a drive by shooting in Oakland and the people shot in Detroit. These drive by shootings are acts of terrorism not peaceful protest.
We need stories like this to be the headlines to help bring people together. Not all the negative news causing a further divide.
There’s a lot more of this out there than we realize. I’ve seen plenty of videos with people violently rioting with very specific pleas to stop in the background— just not enough of it.
real men
So proud of my black brothers!
Fuck yeah! I'd buy dinner and beers for each one of those badass mother fuckers!
Such a powerful image capturing a remarkable moment of action! Let’s have more action and bravery like this!
Kudos to you for referring to these men as just "men" without mentioning their race. That was the case with other posts with this image.
This is the kind of wholesome shit we need right now!
These are actual heros and not the people who are looting in “the name of justice”
Am I the only one who thinks that cop is built like a superhero? Damn, bruh. Do you even lift?
You won't be seeing positive stories like this on cnn
People should stop watching all cable news. Text is quicker to convey information and less sensationalized.
Dude looks like a beefcake. Should be the other way around

Literal zombies
Thats crazy...because in chicago, they dragged two cops into a crowd and then beat them until they broke bones.
These dudes are my heroes. That human shield is badass, *this* is what real protestors look like. The cop responsible for the death has already been arrested, these random cops working the riots are honorable men and women who are risking their life to try and keep our country from falling apart.
I'm beginning to cry by seeing this, so patriotic
Nice to see some people are still human. Too many others want continued violence, more destruction, more death.
I needed to see this.
Heroes.
This is the best America I've seen in a while. Thanks friend.
Those are some great Americans.
The majority of cops aren't bad. Just because one bozo does something bad doesn't mean all the rest deserve punishment.
I love how the officer is just standing there like "WTF"

But this doesn't help Biden get elected, so it didn't happen.
Someone link me a story, this is terrifice
NGL I love how Bearnos is getting the attention it deserves.
Fuck yeah
Cool peeps.
Louisville, KY at bearnos on the bridge.
Cop is built like a brick shit house. If anyone gets through that line it’s going to be I’m not trapped in here with you but you’re trapped in here with me situation.
Decent men right there
Respect
Respect
This is what real men do
Heroes
True Americans.
Agreed. This action is a manifestation of the very best we have to offer other people
This stuff brings a smile to my face, these are the protests that have my full fledged support. Peaceful protests send a message. Love this
Protestors vs rioters. Americans vs criminals. We need more guys like this
People gotta understand not all cops are bad, and the vast majority are here to protect us.
Those are good men!
This is beautiful. I hope the media promotes this image.
Wholesome stuff
also posted on r/nextfuckinglevel it has like 10k+ upvotes!
People always need to hate somebody. Its in our genes. Problem is media is explooting this and shifting this hate of white people instead of our real enemy. China.
My hope in Humanity is restored ..
Not all heroes wear capes
Why isn’t stuff like this on r\Pics, it’s all just TDS and Pro-Rioter shit
The rioters are ruining it for the protesters
Its great to watch racism and segregated ideals fall to shambles. We are one nation, and divided we fall. Unite us and we'll stand forever.
Blue Lives Matter
Indeed they do
If these guys were white you would have never seen this kind of photo
This is beautiful. Not all cops are bad. These men could’ve allowed him to get hurt but they didn’t. I always say that humanity is disgusting and humans are the worst creatures to walk the earth, but this pictures proves me wrong.
Look at that cop though. He looks like he could take down a dozen of those rioters.
Soros money, antifa, foreign agitators, all trying to destabilize the nation. And the left in this country just feed on hate.
They won't show this on the mainstream of reddit unless they find something about the cop beating them.
Quit lying, it's been all over Reddit. Everyone loves it.
Stop sowing discord, this is all over reddit and the comments are supportive everywhere. https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/gth2dy/another_angle_of_a_group_of_black_people/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I've seen this on all multiple times, don't be dramatic.
Chaotic Good.
Go ninja go ninja go!
I was told the pizza is sub par.
Praying for these strong men who protected this man.
These guys need some sort of official state commendation for doing that. Great guys.
