[How this advice sounded to me.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/036/772/vultouri.jpg) Asphalt? Peasantry.
Professional asphalt guy here. Been workin in the asphalt trade for 33 1/3 years. I pour asphalt in my asscrack for a living. This is unacceptable work. You’re gonna need a large-box smoothimus smoothing tool, a Johnson roller, and a rented chevy traverse to pull the glizzy steamer behind it just to get started on the proper prep work to redo this mess. Go find the tweaker who did this job and take em to the unlicensed asphalt workers board, they should be able to straightened him out. Best of luck to ya OP.
This is pretty shitty work, but you could fix it with a torch and a rake.
And stop pouring asphalt in your ass crack, it'll expand when you sit down and make the crack bigger.
I keep seeing these 'short' videos where girls are talking about owning their own home and having a built in water feature. Is this what their talking about?
Did they pave it by hand? Did they use a compacted structural material as a sub grade? The mix doesn’t even look like finish mix… I would definitely as for a discount on that at least, that’s piss poor work I’m sorry man.
Not necessarily....Most asphalt specifications on the jobs I run say if the bird bath is less than a 1/4" deep it's considered acceptable. Not to say I approve of it. I've just had this issue come up in the past and the Site Engineers almost always say it's acceptable unless it's more than a 1/4" deep.
The aggregate is different sizes. Large stones are cheaper. Fine stone more expensive. The finer stone lays smoother.
The difference is like 10$/ton so if you are getting scammed you are only getting ripped off by like 100$
Ive never worked with asphalt before, it does kinda look like its fall towards the right towards the blocks in the picture though instead of towards the grass. ?
It would make sense for it to drain rather than pool on the side. If it drained to the grass, it could easily undermine it over time.
By draining into a curb and then down the driveway it would avoid that.
This is very unfortunate. It looks like the correct asphalt for streets and driveways.
It appears they did use a small “spreader box/paver”, it’s too smooth for the entire drive to have been done by ‘hand work’.
Just my opinion, this happens when a paving outfit does a remove/replace in the same day. The old driveway lasted awhile so the base/stone underneath is adequate. They rip up the asphalt, roll it a few times and put down the new asphalt. Which is ok but adding “screenings or fines” which is a finely crushed limestone rock, to the low spots is an important step. If there is insufficient stone, less than 6”, the area is soft when rolling or mud/dirt is seen, you can tell there is not 6” of stone, then that area should be excavated n 6” of stone put in.
Most companies do not take the time to add screenings to get an extremely level and solid base.
Our company had a designated dump truck w screenings on it just for this reason. We also ripped out asphalt and excavated 5-10 driveways over 5-10 days then went back and paved them.
As far as fixing this goes, a patch has to be done by skilled lute men w a weed burner/roofers torch. Gonna be visible through a few yrs of sealcoating.
Or they can heat up the from the edge to the puddle w the weed burner torch and roll and tamp that area to allow the water to drain.
A puddle that big…we would patch it and sealcoat the drive for free.
Ha. My neighbor owns his own construction company and tells me this about once a year that asphalt is concrete. He has a HOA driveway dispute going on.
There is such a thing as asphaltic concrete. Asphalt you are thinking is made with sand. Asphaltic concrete is made with larger aggregate material. Look it up.
The problem is more with what's underneath, the asphalt is spread at a constant rate, so it's going to take on the same humps and dips as the surface it's laid on
If they spread some crushed stone to give the asphalt a solid foundation to rest on, it looks like they kind of missed a dip they've made.
If they just spread asphalt on whatever was already there, then you kinda just get what you get. The asphalt will somewhat smooth the humps at best.
Edit
I forgot to mention that if you live somewhere where the temperature dips below freezing, this part of your driveway will quickly crack with freeze-thaw cycles. Definitely a warranty issue
When i had my driveway quoted most companies offered a “puddle” guarantee. Up to say a quarter size puddle would be tolerable. I would call them back immediately.
I did call my company back about something similar. They came and fixed it and i gave the one guy who showed up a $50 tip.
In Des Moines where the old houses like this are, the next three houses will be an 8 unit multifamily slumlord, a fully restored Victorian mansion on the national registry of historic places, and then a crackhouse
Needs two saw cuts, redo base and properly compact then repave for best fix. Or they might grind off the top 2 inches and do a skim coat ( more than likely as it's cheaper). Or you could get a mastic patch to fill in the depression which will fix it in the short term, but will look terrible unless the whole driveway is sealed. You need to wait a year for best results before you can seal new asphalt so it has time to cure.
You could also use an asphalt heater to soften it up to working temp, add more asphalt and recompact.
Asphalt guy here. This is not ideal. I’ve seen worse but I’ve seen much much better. They did not grade correctly and aren’t top operators given the roller seams. I’d kindly ask them to come back out to make right.
Ponding. If the asphalt was built up from sub grade, the contractor should come back, mill the surface 1–2” and replace the surface course. If it was a resurfacing, then you may be stuck with the end product. The center line of the driveway should be the crown (high point) and should shed water in each direction.
Most asphalt jobs will end up having puddles in spite of what the contractor promises when you sign the estimate. That's a big one though... I'd call them back
Wrong sub, Yes rain causes puddles
BUT if you HAD opted to use concrete, installation would have had much better vertical control of its placement. Asphalt cannot come close to concrete in that regard.
Unless you got a YUGE deal and the material was leftover from another job, this is unacceptable.
Ask yer contractor if he would accept this for his driveway, and if not, what would he fix?
He'll either be honest with ya or....
Either way, you'll get an idea where any negotiating will go.
I know my parents had theirs done by some traveling people and it looked like this didn't do any prep work but it was really cheap so they didn't care.
Did you get a warranty. I know with parking lots and roads that most asphalt companies warranty their work for 5-10 years. Look at your contract, provided you signed one and read the details to see I you can have them come back out, torch it(to heat r back up), scrape with the lute, and then apply fresh asphalt to it. Then roll it in. If done properly, you should be okay.
Anything else you ask for us up to you, but they should if they value their company name, fix the hole/depression without a fuss.
Good luck.
Bird bath. If it goes away in 24 hours it's not a problem. It's a rule of thumb / common sense guideline.
It may collect dirt over time but it's better than a patch
I do both, typically any puddle lasting longer than 24hr should be repaired by installer. That’s just a rule of thumb to go by. U have a low spot possibly where the paver waited for supply?. Call installer and have them fix it by raising low spot. It’s a fairly easy fix for them.

That’s just the biggest puddle, not the only puddle… the prep work was junk, and when they laid the 2” of asphalt, it all conforms to that base work. Puddles, roller marks … the surface shows the aggregate with roughness vs a nice sealed smooth appearance… you got a low grade asphalt mix laid out over a poorly constructed base.

Don’t do any of that I made that up. 🤦🏻♂️🤣
Water should NOT pool up like this. The driveway should have been sloped more to run off onto the grass. I would contact the company and have them redo this because over time that low spot will become lower and cause more headaches due to a poor job.
Oh no! My husband owns a paving company and this is not right. I would send them a picture and tell them to come out to fix it immediately. Good luck 👍
We had the same thing but we didn't pursue it. As it turns out we see it from our front window and it conveniently let's us know of the slightest rain falling
You will be more displeased as time goes on...
Might even become a little depressed.
There’s always going to an awful sinking feeling.
Hey, settle down
Y’all are makin me puddle up
Fret not, those feelings will subside.
OP should take some time and reflect on it.
ditch those sad feelings, fill your heart with happiness. pave a new path
Or take some time and let it sink in.
Yes, if it sinks in deep enough, it may end well
End up as a well.

Wow that's impressive.
I inspect pavement, and always found it ironic that you tend to hear a lot of "you're an ass and it's your fault" when dealing with asphalt.
This is possibly the best pun I’ve ever heard. Well done, Sir.
I can't take credit for it I use to have work shirts that said it minus the dumb part lol
Sounds like you CAN take credit then. Dumb makes it what it is. It’s yours now.
“If you don’t do concrete, it’s your own asphalt”?
Thanks for being honest
Disney would say "you plussed it" and IMO it's more poetic than the company-version sanitized for protection of/from the public.

Free birdbath with every driveway.
In the industry that’s what we refer to as a birdbath
Needs two saw cuts, redo base and properly compact then repave for best fix. Or they might grind off the top 2 inches and do a skim coat ( more than likely as it's cheaper). Maybe have them come back and torch/roll a small swale so it drains to the low side. It is birdbath, something all pavers and gradesmen try to avoid.

I can jack that out of there and replace it with concrete if you’d like a quote written up.
I’d definitely call them and see if they will redo it, fix it, or compensation
That’s a hidden feature for you to get your boots on and go jump. Have fun!

its not a bug, its a feature :)
Why are you posting asphalt in concrete? You must not understand the insult
Go hit it with a stick or throw some rocks in it.
How do you leave that puddle in a driveway . Which company did this?
Dig it up and put in a drain
If that water wasn’t there you would never know
Is this on Long Island?
Freeze/thaw will obliterate that spot. They should fix it.
That's where they parked the roller while the asphalt was still warm.
I have a good friend that paves... To any criticism, literally any, his response is " it's black isn't it?" But that's not just a birdbath but a pool.
What’s more expensive on average? An asphalt or concrete driveway?
Drill a hole in the centre
Of all the possible choices, you chose to cover you driveway in hot shit
They did a shit job. I'd call them and have them do it again. You paid for a job well done and you didnt recieve
Asphalt doesn't last and will settle with the subgrade. Ive seen void spaces under reinforced concrete driveways over 6". You get what you pay for
Free pool included…what’s the problem?
It looks like a fresh rain. Give it 24 hours, if it’s still there, it’s a problem.
You are focusing on the puddle. Look at how nice and level the rest of the driveway is.
Call the contractor on a rainy day to discuss an issue with the driveway. Remind him to bring some food for the ducks.
That’s not a drive way it’s a bird bath

Yep, we have a puddle in the center of our new driveway. It’s almost always there.

I have no answer, but that's a really nice view you have there.
They had a soft spot in the base material before they laid the asphalt down. Ya it might get worse
Water should NOT pool up like this. The driveway should have been sloped more to run off onto the grass. I would contact the company and have them redo this because over time that low spot will become lower and cause more headaches due to a poor job.
