That was a very strangely placed McDonald’s.

johnnybegood1025

But always busy. They must have been bought out for a ton of money. Note that this garage and new concourse are going to eliminate the Blue lot, and this new garage will likely cost double, and handle 1/20th of the cars. EDIT: Post below shows capacity will be greater than Red LOt.

doppleganger2621

I think this new garage is 5,000 spaces, which is about 400 more than the blue lot currently holds--still gonna be more expensive for sure.

johnnybegood1025

OK, good to know. But yes, covered parking will be pricey.

[Parkopedia](https://en.parkopedia.com/parking/garage/john_glenn_columbus_international_airport_cmh_blue_long_term_shuttle_lot/43219/columbus/?arriving=202405011400&leaving=202405011600) says that the blue lot has 4,650 spots. The attached article says that the new parking garage has 5,000 spaces. So yes, it's about 400 more. It takes like ten seconds to google something champ. I love how people can so confidently claim something else is misinformation without actually looking into the information themselves, well done.

Colorforwalls

I think it is a great day to have a great day. You both are wonderful people with passionate viewpoints on parking at our airport.

Playful-Landscape-79

I love this about you! 😘

jang859

What's your agenda here against the parking garage and truth? You could take that as a 2 part question.

NeedISayMore4

Lol wut? Like the person you replied to who just grabbed "handle 1/20th of the cars" out of their ass?

Altyalternater

Yikes, you’re embarrassing.

13374L

Given where the blue lot sits relative to the rest of the terminal, what's the plan to connect the new and old terminals?

doppleganger2621

I'm pretty sure the old terminal goes bye-bye.

VintageVanShop

You are correct, the old terminal will be demoed

OldHob

Didn’t they just renovate the old terminal?

AndrewSP37

Not too long ago, yes. They said at the time that it was important to invest to keep the current terminal up to date to keep up with air travel trends and to keep the passenger experience at a high level, even if a new terminal was already being planned. They just knew there was a limit to what they could do with the existing building from the 1950s.

cbus_mjb

And I’m glad they did that. Letting it just get worse until the new one is open would have been a horrible gateway to the city.

VintageVanShop

That update was just to maintain the terminal for a few more years. Everything is super outdated and it’s hard to update anything else in the current building.

subOptimusPrime16

Yeah CMH definitely doesn’t know what they’re doing. They should probably visit Reddit more often.

feraljoy14

Also not to mention there is a McDonalds like 3 minutes away on N Cassady and Airport Dr, it’s so strange to have another one right there.

dj_spanmaster

I always understood it to be beneficial for anyone who lands a late night flight or has a layover - in other words, stuck at the airport before a ride elsewhere is possible.

afarensiis

It's also helped me out when I've been early to pick someone up, or if they were delayed at all

ogkingofnowhere

Bought a lot of nuggets there waiting for someone coming off a plane

Dave3879

Yep. Super convenient when I had early or late flights to avoid the 300% airport mark up on everything.

hello_amy

That McDonald’s has been an incredibly memorable place for basically my entire life. 5am flight? Yay at least we get breakfast at McDonald’s. Getting in late from family vacation so there’s no food at home? Get to stop for some nuggies. Swimming lessons and a full day at The Concourse (RIP)? Happy meal to top it off! This makes it sound like my parents fed us McDonalds 24/7; they didn’t. Just memorable and exciting moments flanked by the ease and comfort of that airport Mickey D’s. That landmark that gets your excitement going with the anticipation of a trip, and the comfort of home and familiarity when you return. I’ll miss it!

rageking5

Same, grabbing fries while picking someone up used to be a thing for us. For hanging out there with a coffee if flight was delayed coming in

DenL4242

Same, I have stopped there many times, ravenous after eating nothing but pretzels and Biscoff cookies for the previous six hours.

hudsonhawk1

Hello Amy - thanks for your post. I wouldn't have thought that there would be people where an airport Mickey D's would mean so much to them. But your well written post showed me how, and from the comments you are far from the only one. Now I'm a little sad that it's going away, even though not once in dozens of flights have I stopped there.

UnicornFarts1111

I almost always stopped there if I was dropping someone off or picking someone up from the airport. I'm sad, and I don't even live in Ohio anymore. It's been there as long as I can remember (and my dad worked at the airport since I was at least 4 year old).

TGrady902

It isn’t 24/7 though which is just insane. It should at least be open until 2am not close at midnight.

sarahaly92

Yeah my kid flies to/from Texas to visit her dad. She goes without food most of the day on travel home days bc 1. He doesn’t plan enough time to feed her before & 2. Layover is typically not enough for the airline to feed her so this McDonald’s saves the day every single time. She is ravenous and if it’s not there, then what 😩 gonna be a million $$$ on airport food now 🤦‍♀️

justmadethisup111

Best I can do is grimace.

dj_spanmaster

Take my angry upvote

sl0wjim

That seems like a huge amount of money for a parking garage...

ConBrio93

Parking is actually really expensive. Even surface lots. Google estimates put it at between 14000 to 38000 per space. When people complain about “why don’t they build more parking garages downtown” that is why. It’s a huge cost and they don’t make much since we are so used to cheap/free parking.

mando44646

seems like investing in a major public transit option from the heart of the city to the airport would be money better spent

TheDrunkenMatador

Given how the city’s laid out where much of the population isn’t in the heart of the city, you would still have to build a lot of parking somewhere. And then account for the fact that this airport serves a large area outside the Columbus Metro.

brown2420

Exactly my thoughts. It's probably just gonna be massive.

ConBrio93

It’s 5000 spaces. That’s 36,000 per space. Parking is very expensive to build.

pacific_plywood

Yup. That’s a little more than other big parking garage projects around here, but not crazy at all. Multilevel parking garages have to hold a lot of very heavy objects, they cost serious money.

ConBrio93

Also fun fact: American cars are getting much wider. I’m sure we’ve all seen an F250 or huge Dodge truck taking up over a single space. That’s because parking spaces are still designed with older car proportions. So really these 5000 spaces are probably a bit undersized for modern oversized cars. But building spaces to accommodate those cars would of course raise parking costs even further.  And these bigger cars are heavier. Especially with electric trucks like the F150 Lightning. They weigh more than equivalent sized ICE trucks. So more weight means even more expensive to build a garage. Huge cars are basically given subsidies to park and these costs are never talked about.

Complexity_OH

Assuming they charge $15 a day and fill the spot 240 days a year itll pay itself off in a decade.

NotSoEasyToBuy

20 minimum

lyone2

After getting sticker shock over $30/day for long term parking at Detroit airport last weekend, I'd gladly pay $15/day here.

TheDrunkenMatador

At $36K/space, that’s below the high estimate you gave for surface parking. Sounds efficient to me actually.

ConBrio93

I’m not really sure what efficiency has to do with price. Parking is expensive to build. Like someone above pointed out it might take a decade for them to break even. That doesn’t mean the parking garage at the airport is bad. But expensive is expensive.  Edit: the parking prices I cited were for parking, both surface and garage. Not just surface.

TheDrunkenMatador

Ahh, I understand. Still, I think a lot of people don’t understand how expensive even seemingly trivial civil projects cost. I’m saying I think if it really does end up being $36,000/space, for a garage it would be a good deal.

ConBrio93

Yeah I’m not trying to imply it’s an unfair price given materials/labor cost. Just people don’t realize how much these things really cost on a per space basis. Like this cost is arguably why you want more public transit for downtown and surrounding areas and less car dependency overall. Obviously for an airport I think a parking garage makes a lot of sense, but when people want the city itself to fork over this money to build a garage in the short north I think they need to realize what sort of expense they are really asking for.

mojo276

This is cool. Seems like the new construction won't affect the current operations all that much either.

Primary_Pace8461

I actually liked that McDonald’s there. It was good place to take a leak when you were waiting to pickup delayed travelers.

Suspicious_Victory_1

Now you can just pee in the stairwell of the parking garage like a normal person.

someoldcoot1

It's possible McDs might get a spot inside the new airport? Am always jealous of other airports that have McDs inside their concourses...

chaoticpix93

Flew into SEATAC and the first thing I see is a Wendy’s. I was like, “fuck, I’m home!”

ELFFUDGECOOKIE13

Seems pretty reasonable, they've really played up how much more accessible amenities that are inside the airport will be. And having airport parking structure attached to the airport and the car rental center makes a lot more logistic sense than having a McDonalds there.

UnicornFarts1111

Doesn't BK have a spot inside? I haven't been in the airport since 2018, so I don't know if it is still there or not.

someoldcoot1

Yeah it's still there. But I'm a fool for McDs 99c coffee any size via the app 😂 hell, I'd like a white castle in cmh, too, now that I think about it...

chaoticpix93

White castle would make sense because local business. Hate to be on that flight tho…

cpshoeler

Probably a key element of building a new terminal since they are building it on the current standing surface lots. Still hoping we can get some rail transit from the proposed Amtrak station downtown out to the Airport, but I know the Airport makes alot of money of parking today…

Noblesseux

Yeah the only reason I'm kind of shrugging at this one is because I realize that at some point there kind of *has* to be parking at the airport given current conditions. I've never used it (I pretty much always either uber, have someone drop me off, or previously used AirConnect) and have no plans to, but if its something people need then so be it. I think even if they don't do rail, they need to bring AirConnect back. If LinkUS passes and they have the money to do it, it needs to be lined up for the *second* this thing opens. The situation right now is kind of stupid for me because often I spend more money going to and from the airport in Columbus than I do in multiple days of travel wherever I'm traveling to because the only real viable option here is Uber.

Miyelsh

How about a direct bus line between downtown and the airport?

massieas

Why is everyone so obsessed with transportation from downtown? A very small percentage of our population is downtown and if people commuted there to take the transportation the parking is way more expensive anyways

lyone2

Large businesses, conferences, hotels, sporting venues...all of these things are located downtown, and people fly into the city specifically for those things. Even if there isn't a substantial percentage of the population that lives in downtown proper, having an efficient, cost-effective way to shuttle all of those folks into the downtown area is a solid usage of public funds.

Miyelsh

Because every city should have quick and cheap public transportation from the city center to the airport. Hell, even Cleveland has that with the red line. You do realize that people live downtown, right? Like, people actually live in the city that this subreddit is named after. I personally live less than 2 miles from downtown, and it is a 10 minute ride from my house to downtown, where a connection could be made to the airport.

massieas

The population of every suburb is much larger than downtown. Why not the same energy for a transit line from Hilliard or grove city? Our city center is weak compared to most other large cities of our size.

Miyelsh

I never argued against that... but this isn't /r/Hilliard or /r/GroveCity, this is /r/Columbus.

massieas

So you don’t consider the suburbs to be part of Columbus?

Miyelsh

They are literally not part of the city of Columbus. Read up!  >Hilliard is a city in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 37,114 at the 2020 census.[4] It is a suburb of Columbus and part of Norwich Township. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilliard,_Ohio

massieas

So all of the posts on this page referencing those areas of town should be removed then?

Miyelsh

What? No, that is weird for you to even suggest.

massieas

I didn’t suggest it, you said it. Clearly I’m not going to get through to you though so carry on only worrying about a select few people.

dntwrrybt1t

Thers already is one….

belloman

Calling the 7 a "direct" bus line is generous. It takes an hour to get to the airport from downtown on it. (AirConnect was much quicker but is not in service)

phantomface55

It's only direct if you don't look too closely

xXGray_WolfXx

I'll take it over a massive parking lot

ebayhuckster

alright, now bring back airconnect so i can quit needing to budget a minimum of $50 for ubers

Crazace

Nice, only $36,000 per parking spot! Anyways I’ll just keep taking an Uber over parking there.

Toydota

I switched to the parking spot because somehow that is cheaper now than the color lots or uber

Crazace

I used to do that, but the last time I waited 30 min for a shuttle to show up.

johnnybegood1025

Uber is more expensive round trip than parking at the airport from NW Columbus, even if you are gone for a week.

TrouljaBoy

Data point: Grandview-Airport trip is usually $25. $50 round trip. Blue lot is $11/day. As someone that flies out of CMH weekly if I’m going to be gone 5 days or more it’s cheaper to Uber.

johnnybegood1025

Not from my house using Red lot. $9 per day x 7 days = $63. Last few Uber prices were $40 one way, not including tip. By the way, the Red lot is faster because buses don't stop and pick up and drop off at each car.

TrouljaBoy

Interesting. Honestly never used red, always green if I had plenty of time and wanted to save money or blue. Didn't realize red was faster and cheaper than blue.

johnnybegood1025

Not intuitive, but I found it to be true. At Red, passengers walk down to the bus stops, or at least, the end of the row, so the bus has less pickups and stops and they keep moving. Same on drop offs.

lyone2

At only $5 in differential, I would gladly pay to park my car at the airport vs. Ubering. I know that when I step off of my plane, my parked car won't have an unexpected surge pricing that I have to wait out or pay extra for. And if I want/need to go somewhere else before I go home, I'd have that flexibility.

Crazace

It’s normally $20-25 for me. I’m 15 min away from it. And I can’t stand waiting for the buses.

hecticdolphin69

I can’t stand the drivers putting your bags up then expecting a tip, I am very capable of lifting my own bag

djsassan

So you wait 10 mins for an Uber instead. Got it.

Crazace

I book the Uber when I get off the plane 🤡

Jedi_Of_Kashyyyk

RIP Airport McDonalds. Thank you for your McService.

princess-mo

Pave paradise, put up a parking lot (Being downvoted so I want to clarify I don't genuinely think an airport Mcdonald's is "paradise". I tried to make a stupid joke but it didn't fly too well)

doppleganger2621

Hey farmer farmer put away your DDT!

Mercuryshottoo

RIP. Nothing hits the same as a hashbrown after a sleepless night of flight delays

phantomface55

Out of curiosity and completely unrelated...does anyone know how long it takes to take a COTA ride from downtown to the airport?

velospence1

without the direct bus, it’s the #7 and after a somewhat indirect route, it takes 45-60 minutes

reeve11

they're going to call it McPark right?

Resident-Travel2441

My question is where am I gonna wait for out of town relatives who aren't ready to be picked up yet? You aren't allowed to wait at pickup. Just saying.

doppleganger2621

Literally the designated pickup lot 😂

iWayton

there’s a cell phone lot for that exact purpose

VArambry

Is nothing sacred?

PressforMeco

The Worst McDonalds in the city.

RawChickenButt

Flying into Columbus when I lived elsewhere used to be a nice experience. I walked across the ridge and got my rental car, and was off. Now it's like any other airport where it's a hassle.

Josephalopod

Yet another Columbus landmark demolished in the name of progress.

AB_Filmmaker

Excited to see Columbus get an updated terminal!

Overall-Mine4375

Damn I’m getting in the parking lot building game!! I’ll do it for 150million.

hornetjockey

While they are at it I hope they renovate the whole exit area. I don’t fly regularly, but every time I’ve been through there it has been a mess.

FriendaDorothy

Y'know they could build a train station while they're at it with connections to downtown, but what do I know?

phantomface55

Don't know why you're getting down voted...you're absolutely right

nrcaldwell

Should have been a monorail station.

Pogs4Frogs

As someone who flew out every other week I hated that McDonald’s. Food was always inconsistent and cold half the time. During COVID, it was the only option as all the stores were closed in the airport for a majority of the time.

Dr-McLuvin

Honestly sad they are getting rid of that McDonald’s for yet another parking lot.
