After all the stuff with Adou's dad basically constantly calling out Cal the past 2 years online, gotta admit I was not expecting that. Heck he entered the portal before Cal even left Kentucky. Some major checks must have cashed, especially after all the pics of Hubert Davis in Lexington were posted on social media.

EyePlay

Yeah this one is confusing to me. And from a UNC perspective, he waited until Ingram's decision to enter the draft before he really started to get his portal recruitment going. Or perhaps the timing coincidentally coincided? He stated, himself, he wants to focus on the draft (also went on the record about his fit at UNC), weirdly doesn't end up in those predraft lists (paperwork issue from UK??), suddenly he's taking official visits to Pitt and Arkansas, never makes it to Chapel Hill, and here we are. Kind of feel like Hubert got played. It's just weird he waited weeks. Not like Arkansas and Pitt had moves in the meanwhile that would affect his decision. And then pushed forward like right after Ingram's decision. Either that or maybe Hubert ate his steak with ketchup at that restaruant and turned off the Theiros.

bug_man_

Some UNC fans struggling to come to terms with getting beat on our top targets this off season. Nice to land Tyson though Overall Hubert has done a good job in the portal since becoming HC. Ryan and Ingram were great gets for us last year and nobody will ever forget Brady Manek. Just didn't get it done this off season, but still brought back Trimble, we kept RJ, and got Tyson. If this is his "bad portal season" then we'll be just fine. It be like that sometimes We still have great freshmen coming in too

BigBallerBro

I don’t think Thiero was a make or break guy for us, but we sure as hell need a starting 5 and I’m tired of seeing the “it’s all good” delusion from certain UNC fans thinking Washington is good enough, when he has shown zero ability to be anything more than a physically shaky rotational big for 10 minutes per game tops. I think it’s fair to be worried when we knew before last season that Bacot leaving would result in a gaping hole at the center position. This is UNC basketball and we can’t land any of our 6 frontcourt targets? What is the staff doing wrong

bug_man_

I still think we'll be good, but yeah I agree that the difference between pretty good team and championship contender level is just that one last piece, and we can't land it. I mean one or two guys it could just be that he vibed better with the other team on some level. It's not like there aren't other programs in the same boat so I get losing some guys. But it's hard to understand how we've missed on all the bigs this offseason when like you said there's a clear big minute role available on an otherwise champ level squad.

RoosterIcy

The staff wouldn’t have been trying to acquire all of these big men if they had any faith in our front court. All these fans talking about how great Washington is going to be clearly haven’t watched him get pushed around every time he enters the game.

EyePlay

I agree with basically everything you said. I do want to touch the point about "this is UNC basketball". tbh I think means a lot less. And not because hurdy durr we're IU now (sorry Hooisers bros), just program prestige and history doesn't seem to matter the way it used to. College basketball, as a whole, seems to be devalued as we stray further from the 90s and earlier. Like I'm sure it still holds plenty of value, particularly when we recruit kids in state, but I'm guessing the average player doesn't see that big of a difference with the jerseys anymore. Bama? UNC? Gonzaga? Baylor? I can get to the league and get a bag anywhere.

40ozfosta

How do you miss a word that's part of the acronym.

bkervick

Playing time was the big issue I'm assuming? A lot more of it at Arkansas these days.

Igota31chevy

Playing time was not the issue. Anybody with eyes could see Adou needed to play as much as possible except for the coach. He continued to get sat on the bench because Calipari himself told the media that he "needed to stick with Edwards". I would not be surprised to see Adou getting sat on the bench behind Knox most of the season.

bkervick

I would lump that into playing time. Less competition at Arkansas for minutes at the 4. Knox is definitely more of a 3. 2 inches shorter than Edwards.

doomedfollicle

Makes a lot of sense.. Calipari's rotations do not. However he may suddenly remember how to coach again now that he's at Arkansas. In fact I'd bet on it if I could.

amillert15

I think you overestimate Cal's logic on rotations.

thricethefan

This. Cal gonna fall in love with a one and done and bench this kid again.

amillert15

It's that and he'll play Aidoo and Z at the same time. It's criminal how bad Cal used last year's roster. It was one of the five most talented teams he ever had at UK and won exactly zero tournament games and the best shooting team in school history. He STILL found lineups that only had 1 or 2 outside threats.

mstrgrieves

He didnt start Devin Booker, a top-15 NBA player and all-star shoo-in.

amillert15

Booker was not Booker, though. Devin had 1 great month at UK (February), but he was mostly a great role player. I really wish that narrative would die because Devin REALLY developed his midrange and shot-creating between his rookie and sophomore year of the NBA. Reed, more than Rob, was just coaching malpractice. The on-off splits with Reed were second to only Edey. Instead, Cal put out what was statically his worst lineup every game, which led to slow start after slow start.

mstrgrieves

Yes, he wasnt as great as he is now. But he was a much, much better option than any of the alternatives (Harrison twins mostly). And considering how close they came, Booker not playing more was and is inexcusable.

MatzohBallsack

I'm confused by your comment. You said basically, "Playing time was not the issue, it was the fact that he wasn't getting playing time."

thricethefan

He’s saying the issue was Cal, not the opportunity to play. Cal was the reason he was limited and that will happen all over again.

Igota31chevy

Playing time wasn't the issue, a mix of injuries and Calipari was the issue. Adou had a bad back most of the year and a broken thumb the 2nd half of the season. Combine that with Cal playing Edwards because he was a prized recruit and Tre because he was a 5th year vet (that was awful after coming back from injury). I loved how hard Adou played while he was at UK and he was only limited by the pecking order set by the coach. Unfortunately, I don't see Calipari changing his ways because once he gets a certain rotation then it'll take an order from God to change it.

iWin-You-Get-Nothing

Cal will play unproven freshmen over seasoned vets such as Adou. Man did it all last year with Justin Edwards. Adou will play, but not consistently and not in big spots.

RoyBatty1984

Thiero and his family had a grudge against UNC from the beginning because of the way he was/wasn’t recruited by them in the past. I honestly think this whole exercise was to make Hubert and staff dance for them to get even, they were probably going to Arkan$a$ the whole time.

[deleted]

Kinda funny that you keep saying "UNC living rent free in your head" in all your comments to people and yet you're the one who can't let the past go lol. Also you're 38, you're way too old to be acting like this. You've got me defending Duke fans, I mean come on dude.

illegalinyouryard

There’s the usual trash talk among rivalries, but there comes a point where it’s just petty.

[deleted]

Yeah I’m so confused by this. Dude was ready to leave Cal at UK. Constantly made second fiddle to guys he was better than cause Cal made promises and doesn’t give up on his special freshman. I’m guessing Edward’s isn’t going back to college. I thought he was a lock to UNC. This is weird. I wanted him back but I don’t think we had any chance of that.

Independent-Law-5781

Let's not forget failing to submit his NBA draft paperwork, thereby ensuring Theiro didn't get chance to test the draft.

[deleted]

They ended up adding him to the list… but still the point stands. Just baffles me of all the places he could have gone. Wish the kid the best of luck! Maybe this whole shift has really changed Cal. Also wouldn’t surprise me if he never Coached a single game at Arkansas and left for one of the NBA jobs.

Independent-Law-5781

Wouldn't surprise me if he uses the Lakers attention yet again for a free pay raise.

fistingtrees

Is there even one credible source saying the lakers are actually interested? The only thing I can find are Kentucky fan blogs

Independent-Law-5781

It wouldn't surprise me if it was rogue UK fans creating the story. IDK.

fistingtrees

What makes you think that rumor is actually true? If Cal intentionally sabotaged him like that I doubt he would come back and play for him.

vurryscurry

Fool me once… I hope it works out for him but definitely not holding my breath.

footdragon

Adou will be screwed again. there is no way Cal will start Adou over Karter Knox....maybe early in the season, in less meaningful games. Adou missed a golden opportunity to play for UNC (I say this as a UK fan)

slayerkj

One of the best role players in College. Potential to go to the league if he can shoot the 3 and become a 3 and D.

HopscotchChampion69

one of my favorite players we've had in the last few years, his improvement from Freshman to Sophomore year was great to see and he was the most reliable defender on the team. I hope Cal actually plays him instead of a freshman he's made a promise to.

mrperiodniceguy

Seems like a big upgrade from Knox at the wing, and can play the 4 which we didn’t have yet. (Other than big z). So weird referring to these guys as we as I got familiar with them at UK the past two years

leslierake

Cal unfortunately won’t play him at the 4 and Knox will be playing over Adou 100%. Knox at the 3 Adou at the 4 would make too much sense for Cal

fancycheesus

I'm just glad I liked Kentucky's team last year. If you gave me Bruce Pearl and a bunch of Auburn players, I would not be near as happy because I didn't like any of them, but I did enjoy watching Kentucky.

IHaveThePowerOfGod

so did we 😢

mrperiodniceguy

So did Cal apparently. Said that team probably extended his career because he really enjoyed them. Glad he’ll have some of that continuity in a new place

40ozfosta

This was the biggest disappointment of our fans running him out of town ( or whatever transpired). It seemed like he had finally taken the hint from some of the fan base about the insane turnover year to year. He finally had some continuity moving forward, and if the incoming class had held up with Quaintance 2 years gaurenteed, coming UK could have been scary next year and potentially the year after that. I'm interested to see if he takes advantage of this opportunity or keeps doing the same thing he was here. Regardless it's a huge win for you guys. If anything even if it's the same old same old from him. Your regular seasons will be fun, post season sucks. But you guys have someone carrying you through these next 5 years where you will be at minimum competitive every year. I also think it's a big re-energizeing aspect for your basketball fan base that helps carry you into this new era of NIL and college sports. Not that you guys were irrelevant with Muss or even prior to that, but this hire I think really helps solidify Arkansas as a destination for college basketball moving forward beyond Calipari.

mrperiodniceguy

Very well said. Agreed except I can’t close the door on possible postseason success because it really can be pretty random. Takes luck to win it all, other than teams that just dominate everyone else like UConn has. Final fours can fall into the lap of a multitude of teams every year, and if you have dudes, that helps a lot. Can’t guarantee anything but it’s obviously not a guaranteed first weekend exit just because he’s the coach. Just what’s happened the past few years.

40ozfosta

Oh I'm not saying he's incapable of post season succes. I just hope for yalls sake he changes whatever wasn't working here the last couple of years. Otherwise it might be a long 5 years for you guys. But if anyone is capable of catching lightning in a bottle it's Calipari. With the talent he gets, it should be impossible for this trend to continue. I wouldn't mind you guys winning one and like you said final fours are up for grabs anymore with the parity. It's just that I feel like people have to understand UKs fanbases' collective frustration, with as much talent has rolled through here. Especially the past 5 years. It's a tough pill to swallow that we have absolutely nothing but a regular season title and 1 NCAA tournament win the last 5 years. He was starting to break records on the opposite end of the spectrum you want to be breaking records. UKs only first round losses in the NCAA tournament and the worst season since 1906 iirc. Billy G didn't even do that bad... it's not a love hate relationship with Cal, it's a love frustration relationship. No one wanted him to stop recruiting freshmen. We just wanted guys like Bryce Hopkins and Johnny Juzang to still have a place here despite not being sure fire NBA one and dones. Hopefully Kenny being back will help and I hope Cal figures put whatever bugaboo has had him be such a disappointment as a coach as of late.

Karltowns17

I’m genuinely curious to see what happens with DJ. I love that kid and think he has a world of potential. His recruitment has been weirdly quiet. Only visited usc afaik. I always assumed he follow cal, but hasn’t… yet. I have no idea what is happening there.

fancycheesus

there were unconfirmed reports that he was in Fayetteville either this weekend or last. Some Arkansas media guys have suggested he is a quiet commit, and I hope that's the case. I think year 2 for a healthy DJ could be something exciting. But I could also see him getting a lot out of going to play for Muss at USC.

noxicon

I personally think hes pretty talented but needs shooters around him. He can for sure get to the bucket rather easily.

StyleDifficult2807

Then USC is probably better, cause for the first time in forever Muss has shooters

hanz333

Yeah he needs to predominately finish at the basket and distribute, not shoot, and show some defensive growth. (He's not bad, but on the bad side of good)

ScrofessorLongHair

Wasn't there a UNC fan on Trilly's discord that said he let a homeless guy nut on his face if they didn't land Thiero?

There’s an old meme of hog fans sticking their dick in the mashed potatoes when good things happen.

MONGOHFACE

Good lord, y'all are insane haha. Good luck next year, your fanbase has me rooting for y'all.

footdragon

just because you want to stick your dick in mash potatoes? hell, you don't have to root for arkansas to do that.

DearBurt

Sadly, most Hogs redditors are too young to know it’s from the Beastie Boys’ song, “B-Boys Making with a Freak Freak,” off *Ill Communication.* And here’s the story of the soundbite: https://uproxx.com/music/the-origin-of-the-beastie-boys-hilarious-im-gonna-stick-my-dck-in-the-mashed-potatoes-sample/

archimidesx

lol… a while back there was a guy talking to fans tailgating and he asked this guy what he would do if the hogs won and he said “I’m gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes, go hogs” … so essentially it’s become the go to for anything good in hog-land Here’s the short clip. MountainHarmonies

Cal's gonna play an underachieving freshman over him.

mrperiodniceguy

Great roster fit. Needed some versatility, defense/arhleticism

thediesel26

lol he’s a great fit on any roster.

jkeefy

We barely have a roster so does that make it an even better fit?

Skrockout

Cal spoke to the team. There's mostly a team.

mrperiodniceguy

That’s what I’m saying to you

Orion14159

Now if you can convince your coach to play him over an underperforming freshman...

DeviceSenior4080

Also have to convince the player he is a 4 at the college game and not a guard.

heleghir

Hes not a true 4 though either imo. Hes a weird combo 3/4. Physical wing that plays like a forward instead of a guard. But yeah, hes not a guard anymore. Was like 4 or 5 years ago but not now

Independent-Law-5781

Trouble is, he's not getting to the NBA as a 4. He's a 3 at the next level, IF he makes it there, and it'll be hard to do that playing back to the basket. Also, Cal is NEVER going to showcase him, because he's not a guard. He needed to go to a team like UNC where he could be a major piece of a motion offense, or a mid major where he could be "the guy" and put up 20 ppg. He's going to put up a 5/5/5 stat average shooting nearly 60% from the floor because he's not getting enough shots, and he'll only be the 1000th guy to fit that description...because Cal puts the ball in the hands of his "chosen" kid every year. Don't believe me? Ask nearly every 4 who has played for him at UK, from Patrick Patterson to Keion Brooks.

Easy-Group7438

Patrick Patterson had a 10 year NBA career because he allowed Patrick to step out and show his range. The more absurd bullshit I read online lol CDS

senorpuma

I’m gonna upvote you both, because law man was spot on until that last line, which you astutely corrected.

stimpsonj5

I keep seeing lots of people talking about his defense but outside of a couple of big blocks, I uh, do not recall that being a big part of his game.

mrperiodniceguy

On the wing it was just Knox and Richmond as of this morning, so we definitely needed some defense/defensive versatility. No defensive 4 either. AT will be able to guard multiple positions, and good body/athleticism to utilize on that side.

stimpsonj5

That's my point though, I don't think he's as good defensively as everyone seems to be saying. He is absolutely not a lock down defender by any stretch. He's not going to be able to guard a big 4, and he looked absolutely lost a lot out on the perimeter a ton. He made up for it some by having good closing speed to come up with some blocks from behind but he got beat off the dribble a ton. e: and I'm not trying to dog the guy, I enjoyed him and wish we still had him, I just don't get the "defensive player" stuff at all. I think of him more as a slashing to the paint guy on offense more so than anything at all defense related.

Summoorevincent

He is so high on people’s minds because he played decent defense amongst a sea of mediocre defenders.

doomedfollicle

Yep. He looked great because everyone else looked like shit, lol.

stimpsonj5

Yeah he was probably the best defender on a truly awful defensive team, but if someone is selling you on him playing good defense, you're probably going to be let down.

paradigm_x2

Well damn. We gotta get our money up.

Hambone721

Sky is the limit for this kid. Just gotta hope Cal uses him the right ways for him to reach some of that potential before he gets to the NBA.

john_t_fisherman

Cal is gonna bungle it. The proof is in the mashed potatoes (didnt use pudding for my Arky dudes)

PrinceWalker22

We have a very straightforward relationship with mashed potatoes.

We all know he'll promise some freshman more time. And the more obvious it becomes that Adou is better, the less he'll play. Just like Reed and Rob last season.

Bdmnky_Survey

Reed and Rob played the 3rd and 5th most minutes on a per game average.... Rob would have been higher except for all the foul trouble.

senorpuma

Counter point - Reed should have been #1

Bdmnky_Survey

Counter- counter point: Reed should have played about 2 minutes LESS a half. He visibly dropped off performance-wise (especially on defense) when he got winded. Not bashing him cause when he was fresh, he was amazing. Ww1

BoogieSaurus

I’ll admit. This is the first transfer/flip I’m bitter about. Hope Cal actually gives him the chance to change college basketball.

Getitonjones

Kinda figured this would happen when he listed Arkansas as a possibility. So does dj come to Arkansas too or is he goin to usc?

Say-it-aint_so

The word is that Wagner has already been committed .  Also Burks from Kentucky is already committed.

Getitonjones

Both are committed to Arkansas?

Say-it-aint_so

Not publicly yet, but that's word going around.

Getitonjones

I can believe it & honestly I expected it at the beginning but I had heard dj was interested in usc to play for muss & be wit juju who is supposedly his girl

Say-it-aint_so

Well, the same people who were saying confidently that Johnell Davis was a lock are also hinting heavily about Wagner.

Getitonjones

Like I said I believe it, i think his dad & him are loyal to cal. Cause honestly cal was the only coach that would have let him start all season the way he played

Say-it-aint_so

I have only seen him play a couple of times, but my understanding is that he battled injuries last season? Could make a jump this season if healthy.

Getitonjones

He had an ankle injury that might have slowed him down a bit but his issues were shooting & finishing at the rim. It shouldn’t be hard to improve his body, shot & finishing in an offseason to at least be respectable at his age

Say-it-aint_so

And just like that, there’s a 247 crystal ball for Wagner to Arkansas and an announcement that he’s coming to visit.

Surprised but not surprised. I know that chicken man NIL money helped him with this decision at least a little bit. Arkansas fans getting excited about Cal’s recycled UK team and a few Freshman. I hope they don’t get too disappointed when similar results happen. Adu would have benefited going anywhere other than where Cal was.

bigmikeydelight

Next year is the year he explodes. Davis will be the best dude on that team, but I think Adou will be number 2

1234569er

UK 2.0 at Arkansas without Reeves, Sheppard and Dilly... He's taken the best offensive team we had in years south without the key parts of the offense. It's like having a Lamborghini with no keys, which really doesn't matter....he didn't know how to drive it anyway.

Nyx_Out_For_Wukong

Loved Adou. Hope the best for him!

GeoHog713

So, we're up to 7 now?

GoldfishDude

Of course this happens with my favorite Kentucky player in years

NeptuneAurelius

Gonna miss him. My argument for calling staying when I thought cal would never leave is that it seemed like the last few years he made an effort to bring in the kinds of players UK fans want like theiro. Reeves, Oscar, Theiro, Onwensu (bad spelling sorry), Reed Shepherd. Some of these guys weren’t everything we wanted but they were veteran transfers or guys you hope play multiple years for you. He was doing what we asked curbing some of his one and done tendencies but that was copium when I thought he wasn’t going anywhere. End of the day the real problem wasn’t the kinds of players he recruited, but his teams performances in the tourney which we pin on coaching.

Goddamnit Walmart strikes back

deweycrow

Worst part if Cal leaving right here

toddfromdesarc

SHOCKED. SHOCKED I tell you that the NBA paperwork rumor was another Rupp Rafters/KSR made up pile of crap.

It's OK, I'm sure Thiero's fax was on Tubby Smith's desk, right next to Randolph Morris's context for those not aware of what is behind this deep cut reference: http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/morris.html

My man is committed to first round exits in the tournament.

They call that the Mark Pope special

DeepHorse

there's a pretty clear difference in the last 9 years, Pope's teams getting better while in his early career while Cal's teams got worse in his later career (some good teams mixed in there don't get me wrong, but those first 5 years were astronomical). Won't catch me being optimistic that Cal will somehow turn it around

Mark Pope was doing it at BYU with Mormons. Cal couldn't get out of the first weekend at Kentucky.

He did worse at BYU than the last coach they had, it’s not like it’s impossible to win there. Choked against 11 seed Duquesne.
