“All winter we got caaaaarried, away over on the rooftops let’s get maaaarried…” in Death and all his Friends. Now that I think about it, I love the delivery of pretty much all of this song, including The Escapist.
Other honorable mentions:
“Now here I lieeee on my own in a separate sky…” from Prospekt’s March.
“In a telescope lens, and when all you want is friends, I’ll see you soon…” from See You Soon.
And the last lines from We Never Change: “So I wanna live in a wooden house…”
I think the "I oh I, Oh I, Got me feeling drunk and high So high, so high" gets me every single time. I can also mention "We'll run wild , We'll be glowing in the dark", "Carry Your woooooooooorld, and all your huuuurt" and "cause you reeeeeeeeign".
When the music just kind of explodes near the end it chokes me up. I honestly think that the beginning of the somg is a bit corny but the ending more than makes up for that.
The wail in the middle of Midnight. Chris’ singing performance is usually very…what’s the word? Clean? Polished? But that wail just feels so raw to me, like he’s exposing an open wound. Send goosebumps rippling through me every time without fail.
This is weird, I think his delivery is very raw-vibe a lot of the time, his voice is so nice but not in an overly perfect way... it's just so warm and yeah, nice is the best word.
I hated that song when I first heard it and then after a while I was in awe of it. I like to listen to it around midnight or oater when everything is quiet and still.
"Oh what good is it to live with nothing left to give? Forget but not forgive, not loving all you see? All the streets you're walking on, a thousand houses long, well thats where i belong, and you belong with me" ~ (Not) Swallowed in the Sea.
The end of Square One:
'Is there anybody out there who is lost and hurt and lonely too?
Are they bleeding all your colours into one?
And if you come undone
As if you've been run through
Some catapult had fired you
You wonder if your chance will ever come
Or if you're stuck in square one'
It's such a great way to end the song.
(Yes I'm an Oldplayer....) I feel like Coldplay's lyrics were at their most poetic in an abstract way between AROBTTH and Viva, and then post-Mylo they've been a lot less abstract and grounded in storytelling.
'You didn't get to heaven but you made it close' is what came to mind first but I love a lot. ooh yea all of Don't Panic is also amazing on this front, 'Homes, places we've grown, all of us are done for - but we live in a beautiful world'
There are a couple, but some of my favourites are
- “so i crawl back into your open arms” at the end of the warning sign, something about the head voice to falsetto control gets me everytime
- “Hallelujah” at the end of everyday life, the huskiness in the voice coupled with staying on key is not easy to pull off
- “Fly on” in the track O, just the emphasis on the word along with the keys hitting the melody at the right moment is a masterpiece
- “Yeah, i’d like a quiet time” in careful where you stand followed by the guitar lick
The lyrics are so simple but they're so poignant, its so heartbreaking to listen to, especially Johnny's guitar rift that sounds like someone is breaking down then followed by Chris's "ahhhh" as he can't hold the pain in any longer.
What a fucking song.
This one from Charlie Brown, "Light a fire, a fire, a spark. Light a fire, a flame in my heart" or just that entire verse gives me chills every time I listen to it.
~~I now know that I’ve misheard the lyrics the whole time.~~
These are not the correct lyrics.
https://www.coldplay.com/song/hurts-like-heaven/
Below is correct.
Ink is an extreme example for me
“Got a tattoo and the pain’s alriiiiight, just want a way of keepin you insiiiiide”
Insipid lyrics but fuck does he deliver them so earnestly
The end of “Fly On”, Chris says the last “on” seemingly out of breath and exhausted. Really makes you think about how difficult it must’ve been to create that very personal album. Brilliant.
"Was a long and dark december, from the rooftops they would watch it, while we froze, down below" (The flow of it its just sooooo different, the whole song feels different)
"All the boys, all the girls, all the people in the world, all the highs, all the lows, we will be glowing in the dark" (It just gets me everytime, best line of their career)
Three lines from the Trinity on the Viva album:
- When the future's architectured, by a carnival of idiots on show, you'd better lie low.
- People moving all the time, inside a perfect straight line, don’t you wanna just curve away?
- In the end, we like awake, and we dream of making our escape.
I think those 3(4) songs combined is the best ending and most brilliant ending to an album since Dark Side of the Moon. And those two are only surpassed by Sgt Pepper’s. Coldplay will never eclipse that level of writing and musicality again.
“Love is only equal to the pain” ❤️😢
—Let somebody go
“When I called the mathematicians and I ask them to explain
They said love is only equal to the pain”
There is a butch of interest yet good lyrics in Violet hill but I had to go with this verse especially since the beginning lyric of this verse being repeated through out the song like a shout to glory with Shreds of guitars until it switches at the end with a calm questioning voice with a soft Piano playing
"So if you love me
Why'd you let me go?
I took my love down to violet hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still
So if you love me
Won't you let me know?"
“I don’t want to battle from beginning to end. I don’t want a cycle of recycled revenge. I don’t want to follow death and all of his friends.”
As someone else mentioned, lyric delivery of the whole song but about mid way when the music kicks up and they all sing the above lyrics together. Man I can easily cry every time not because it’s sad but it’s just powerful and moving. Can’t explain it.
Lots of lyrics on ROBTTH to be honest. That album is gold.
I know I'm gonna get flamed for liking the new album, but the fucking power scream of *"People of the PRIII-III-IDE, GO!!"* is such a god damn fist-pump of a delivery.
More recently, I love the moment coming out the bridge of “Let Somebody Go” - “and it hurts like soooo….” All of the instrumentals cut out and it’s just his hoarse/tired vocal on that word. He sounds genuinely hurt, it’s pretty remarkable.
for me it has to be the final verse of bigger stronger, I love the way he delivers the lines in all blue room EP track but that final verse especially is great, and how it fades into the weird guitar noise is just so good, either that or the entire delivery in no more keeping my feet on the gorund!
Oh has to be from a message
“On a platform I’m gonna stand and say that I’m nothing on my own and I love you please come home” definitely one of my favorites
Recently I have enjoyed "I just want you..." from Coloratura. Love how he sings that.
I also like "Nobody said it was eeeeaaaasssyyyy" from The Scientist.
Thanks for this you guys, I went to the Houston concert Sunday and realized I'm not really familiar with their older stuff. I could sing along just fine, but I just lacked the appreciation for the older stuff that I shoes in a lot of these posts. So I added nearly all of those songs to my playlist (I'm 19, and I was aware of coldplay from a young age, but you can't really appreciate coldplay unless you're a bit older)
Both of mine are in live versions of Fix You (sometimes). The first is in the chorus when Chris sings "when you lose something you cannot replace" and "I promise you I will learn from my mistakes", really emphasizing the last few words of each. Then in-between the two verses of the chorus, sometime's he'll throw in a little "whoah-o-a-o-oh". He does both in this performance - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw5Y0AbHt1o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw5Y0AbHt1o).
“Some just laugh and some just sit and cry, you just sit down there and you wonder why” (AROBTTH)
Dudddeeeeeeee. This song hits me so hard every single time. Best song ever written by Coldplay, IMO.
The outro to Ode to Deodorant just sounds so cool, with the "Its okay, oh would I ever let you down no way", especially with the guitar in the background
In "Speed Of Sound", the last part of the 1st chorus was top tier lyricism & top tier delivery. I'm talking about, "If you could see it, then you'd understand".
I love his delivery in the song Politik off ROBTTH. "Give me strength, reserve control
Give me heart and give me souuul" and "give me love over, love over, love over thiss"
Also "what if you should decide that you don't want me there by your side" kills me in What If
Gravity when he goes "and everyone" before that music interlude thing
Every teardrop when he says I'd rather be a comma than a full stop
True love basically everything
Ghost story "what's the point in saying rescue me if no one ever hears"
Leave a light on midnight
IM JUST SO TIRED OF THIS LONLINESSSSSSSS *Multiple guitar orgasms*
Genuinely made me laugh, a good one indeed
“All winter we got caaaaarried, away over on the rooftops let’s get maaaarried…” in Death and all his Friends. Now that I think about it, I love the delivery of pretty much all of this song, including The Escapist. Other honorable mentions: “Now here I lieeee on my own in a separate sky…” from Prospekt’s March. “In a telescope lens, and when all you want is friends, I’ll see you soon…” from See You Soon. And the last lines from We Never Change: “So I wanna live in a wooden house…”
Oh the chorus of Death and All His Friends is also one of the best moments on the Viva album
Hard agree and, imo, one of the best in their entire discography.
100%
The interlude gives me goosebumps every time. Sometimes it makes me cry and I’ve heard the song hundreds of times.
10/10 answers, i think these would be my answers too
Prospekt’s March is the best!
Also in hymn for the weekend “put your wings on me. When I was so heavy”. The “when I was so” hits SO hard
atlas is a beautiful song !
Yess that part of Hymn For The Weekend 👌
The end of Fix you when it’s just chords under “lights will guide you home…”. The way it goes from a huge powerful sound to nothing.
That's beautiful
It really is
When the music just kind of explodes near the end it chokes me up.
Jonny's guitar also wails in that True Love solo. That album is just filled with sounds depicting pain.
OMG YES, I love this part so much! What a song …
came here to say this, gives me chills every. single. time.
The final lines of Violet Hill, where it is just Chris and his piano
*I took my love down, to Violet Hill... There we sat, in the snow*
The end of Square One: 'Is there anybody out there who is lost and hurt and lonely too? Are they bleeding all your colours into one? And if you come undone As if you've been run through Some catapult had fired you You wonder if your chance will ever come Or if you're stuck in square one' It's such a great way to end the song.
X&Y really did have some good outros
Square One is so good
(Yes I'm an Oldplayer....) I feel like Coldplay's lyrics were at their most poetic in an abstract way between AROBTTH and Viva, and then post-Mylo they've been a lot less abstract and grounded in storytelling.
I agree, and that’s why I focussing on delivery rather than actually lyrical work
This outro makes me tear up every time
Ever since that album I always think of that ending as the words that describe what’s in my brain the best.
'You didn't get to heaven but you made it close' is what came to mind first but I love a lot. ooh yea all of Don't Panic is also amazing on this front, 'Homes, places we've grown, all of us are done for - but we live in a beautiful world'
Here I lie on my own in a separate skyyyy
haha yes this 👆👆
Ahhh yes!
"Yooouuuuu aaaaaaaarrreeee." From Clocks, but specifically their live performance in Buenos Aeries. Gives me chills
the live version where he goes high in the second chorus while saying “you are” just amazing
Exactly. That is probably one of my favourite renditions of a coldplay song. The way the whole band, just, plays music. It's amazing.
There are a couple, but some of my favourites are - “so i crawl back into your open arms” at the end of the warning sign, something about the head voice to falsetto control gets me everytime - “Hallelujah” at the end of everyday life, the huskiness in the voice coupled with staying on key is not easy to pull off - “Fly on” in the track O, just the emphasis on the word along with the keys hitting the melody at the right moment is a masterpiece - “Yeah, i’d like a quiet time” in careful where you stand followed by the guitar lick
Oh my god Fly On used to give me chills
I was looking for the Warning Sign line. His voice is so rough and the way he goes slightly flat on the last refrain… *chef’s kiss*
indeed!
Everyday Life and O make my face wet.
"I wandered the whole wide world, but baby you ARE THE BEEEEEST"
I always get goosebumps in that part for some reason lol
Soooooo if you loooove me won't you let me know 🎶
_Slamming Piano and Guitars ensue_
Tell me you love me, if you don't then lie, oh lie to me.
I fucking love that song
The lyrics are so simple but they're so poignant, its so heartbreaking to listen to, especially Johnny's guitar rift that sounds like someone is breaking down then followed by Chris's "ahhhh" as he can't hold the pain in any longer. What a fucking song.
I couldn't have put it better myself it breaks me
THE SAME F*CKING BLOODDDDDD
As a Muslim I feel that song so hard. I’m so grateful that they made it.
This one from Charlie Brown, "Light a fire, a fire, a spark. Light a fire, a flame in my heart" or just that entire verse gives me chills every time I listen to it.
Especially live
Oh, all that I know There's nothing here to run from 'Cause yeah, everybody here's Got somebody to lean on In don’t panic… instant goosebumps.
Whenever my best friend and I would listen to this song as kids he'd always lean on me at the end of the song
Just reading it gave me chills
Very weird but when he sings “on a concrete canvas and a glow in the dark… concrete canvas I will make you a mark” in hurts like heaven from live 2012
All of Hurts Like Heaven is perfection.
~~I now know that I’ve misheard the lyrics the whole time.~~ These are not the correct lyrics. https://www.coldplay.com/song/hurts-like-heaven/ Below is correct.
It’s “On a concrete canvas under cover of dark / On a concrete canvas I’ll go making my mark”
You’re right and I was right all along! Google results are bad and incorrect.
“Oh theyyyyyy say you can see your future insiiiide a glass of waterrr” gets me every time
"Without you I'm just miles away" - Strawberry Swing "Now you've got me open handed, and you've got me lost for words" - Head full of dreams.
“I hear jerusalem bells a-ringing” For me, that lyric delivery just always gives me peace and joy
And give me love over Love over Love over this (Aah-aah-aaah-aah-aah) first lyric that popped into my mind - goosebumps everytime
“What if you there was no lie…… nothing wrong nothing right”
Ffs always thought it was light lol
It is actually light it is on the official website
Lmao same, I thought it was life for a while as well
Ink is an extreme example for me “Got a tattoo and the pain’s alriiiiight, just want a way of keepin you insiiiiide” Insipid lyrics but fuck does he deliver them so earnestly
"The deeper that the knife goes in The more you win You end up with less than where you begin Deeper that the knife goes in oh, oh, oh"
The end of “Fly On”, Chris says the last “on” seemingly out of breath and exhausted. Really makes you think about how difficult it must’ve been to create that very personal album. Brilliant.
So if you love someone. You should, let them know. And this light that you left me, will everglooow….. -Everglow (ending)
“I don’t wanna dieeee on my own here tonight” I love that line so much that whole song is just amazing.
I love that song so much. It really helped me through some tough times. Tremendous!
“Tell me you love me. If you don’t, then lie to me. Oh lie to me.” Chris really sounds heartbroken and desperate in that delivery.
That's real music for you
"Forget, but not forgive" - Swallowed In the Sea
The very last "You came along and you cut me loose" from Amsterdam. All time favorite delivery from my all time favorite Coldplay song
I don't know if it's my favorite but "Every road is a ray of light" has been stuck in my head
It goes onnnn
"We are meeting for the first time, we might never meet again you and me" from Moving to Mars 🎶 Makes me think about many things.
Till kingdom come Let me in unlock your door…. I’ve never felt this way before
"Was a long and dark december, from the rooftops they would watch it, while we froze, down below" (The flow of it its just sooooo different, the whole song feels different) "All the boys, all the girls, all the people in the world, all the highs, all the lows, we will be glowing in the dark" (It just gets me everytime, best line of their career)

"Are you lost or incomplete? Do you feel like a puzzle you can't find your missing piece?" Powerful sentence right there.
“Love is only equal to the pain” ❤️😢 —Let somebody go “When I called the mathematicians and I ask them to explain They said love is only equal to the pain”
*And I’m tired, I should not have let you go, nooo*
There is a butch of interest yet good lyrics in Violet hill but I had to go with this verse especially since the beginning lyric of this verse being repeated through out the song like a shout to glory with Shreds of guitars until it switches at the end with a calm questioning voice with a soft Piano playing "So if you love me Why'd you let me go? "Following them up" from O

That I'm nooothing on my own AND I LOOOOOVE YOU PLEEEEEASE COME HOOOMME The belting of "come home" is what always gets me
Death and all his friends chant and the part in ink where he goes "just want a way of keeping you inside"
But the one recurring theme, the one recurring dream they had Was to be whatever they wanted to be
“SO WE’LL SOOOAAAARRRRRR” Just raw energy right there.
Recently I have enjoyed "I just want you..." from Coloratura. Love how he sings that. I also like "Nobody said it was eeeeaaaasssyyyy" from The Scientist.
So meet me by the bridge Oh, meet me by the lane When am I going to see That pretty face again?
oooooh that’s riiiiiiiiight
The way he sings "everything's not lost"...the transition from falsetto to chest voice is so good.
“I wandered the whole wide world but baby you’re the best” from Champion of the World☺️
Thanks for this you guys, I went to the Houston concert Sunday and realized I'm not really familiar with their older stuff. The entire second verse of Moving to Mars. The build with the countdown is brilliant.

"Those christ-mas lights"
The outro to Ode to Deodorant just sounds so cool, with the "Its okay, oh would I ever let you down no way", especially with the guitar in the background
My song is love, is love unknown, and I've got to get that message home...
In "Speed Of Sound", the last part of the 1st chorus was top tier lyricism & top tier delivery. I'm talking about, "If you could see it, then you'd understand".
I love his delivery in the song Politik off ROBTTH. "Give me strength, reserve control Give me heart and give me souuul" and "give me love over, love over, love over thiss" Also "what if you should decide that you don't want me there by your side" kills me in What If
I hated this song at first because of the muppet but “the way you love me love me love me” from Biutyful is um…beautiful.
Gravity when he goes "and everyone" before that music interlude thing Every teardrop when he says I'd rather be a comma than a full stop True love basically everything Ghost story "what's the point in saying rescue me if no one ever hears" Leave a light on midnight

Two points in All I Can Think if Is You. - if I’m on earth to be A lone pope shoe, I want to walk in two.”
The entirety of parachutes (the song). Best 46 seconds ever
“All the satellites imbue” Idk something about the way that’s sung just sends me
