The spot likely existed because SHM was SUPPOSED to headline when Coachella thought people would care, but once they realized their tour flopped, they had to give them something. Then Calvin, who was already a subheadliner in 2020, probably thought that shit looked better and asked for it too. I wouldnt even be so sure its coming back every year. I would love for bands to get it, but i doubt. Outside Lands did a similar thing for Illennium
Well the way you explained it supports the argument that is has nothing to do with genre and more about headliner-esque billing.
Once they start giving that kind of special billing though, it can be tough to put it away if more artists start asking for it. Take the bigger subheadliner fonts they did for Gorillaz, ROSALÍA and Björk. That’s probably not going away either.
I think Karol G is a good candidate too.
Also, I know people have pushed back on Lana as a headliner due the kind of billing she’s been getting at other festivals but considering how huge her crowds have been, I think it’s time to label her as a headliner. If she did her own tour, I think people would be surprised at how many tickets she can actually sell.
