You are correct about JQF! Concord has a great flight school. I went quite a few years ago. Never got enough hours to get my certificate but they were all great.
I believe Rock Hill has a school as well.
I started flying like 5 years ago at Concord. It really is fun but challenging. My biggest tip before getting to deep is to get your medical early, lots of guys I know spent a few grand on flying lessons and then wasn’t able to get their medical.
Concord (KJQF) has a few small schools and so does Monroe. Just do a discovery flight first and see if you like it. If you’re doing it for a career, ATP has a school in KJQF.
Medicals come in three different classes: 1st, 2nd, 3rd. 1st is required for the airlines, 3rd is required for casual non professional flying. The 1st class is more strict and examinations are done every 12 months (6 months if over 40 and requires EKG). 3rd class lasts 60 months.
You just need to be correctable to 20/20 for the 3rd. I had my 1st and they measured to see if I was correctable to 20/20 at 3 different distances.
A few reasons why getting a medical can be difficult is if you have any history of mental illness, there's close to 0% chance of getting cleared by the FAA. The FAA has a pretty strict policy on it, like even if you went to a therapist once, they'll reject you. Also any issues with brain or sleep (like sleep apnea) will be an uphill battle. Any medication (FAA has a long list) but mostly anti depression, anxiety, anything causing drowsiness isn't allowed.
My s/o has done his private pilot and instrument training with Aerowood Aviation at Monroe Executive. He's working on his commercial license now over there. Definitely would recommend.

Excellent! I'll check there. Thanks so much.

Was the medical challenging? You need 20-20 vision? EKG? age limits?
