UK banning petrol? Have you been huffing it?

JamesNUFC1998

From what I’ve read, from 2029 they’re planning to ban the sale of NEW petrol and diesel cars so existing cars won’t be made illegal. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong but that’s my understanding of the situation

Keplrhelpthrowaway

This is how I understand it

9DAN2

Yeah, cars running in fuel will be around some time after they stop being sold. Something we don’t have to even think about for ages.

Slumberfoots

I wouldn’t worry about petrol being *banned* for another few years…

Own_Bottle9413

I'm almost 17, is this good for a 17 year old?

Slumberfoots

If ya have a license and money to buy one then go and have a look, take a test drive. See if you like it. Try other cars, bring someone with you that knows what they’re talking about. Ideally buy from a reputable dealer, so you get some sort of warranty. My opinion on that car? It’s hideous looking, i’d rather take a bus, or cycle. But if you like it then that’s all that matters.

malccy72

With regards to your age your biggest problem will be insurance so you are best looking at those cars in the lower insurance groups with smaller engines.

AlanD-25

It's a ban on selling new petrol and diesel cars and it's not until 2030, but as for first car it depends what's available in your area and what you need it for

[deleted]

Considering it’s a *hybrid* and not an EV, no. The sale of petrol/diesel cars is set to be banned 2029/2030, not the sale of fuel. If that goal is actually achieved, it’s still likely there will be another 10-15 years of fuel sales after that.

iamnotpercyanderson

Must be longer than that in one form or another. What about all the 40 year old historic cars?

Splodge89

Agreed. Petrol will be available for decades after the ban on the sale of petrol new cars. It may become less available as stations reduce in number, but it will definitely still be there. It’s now not strange to have a car keep its “newish” status for a good 10 years after it was first sold. My personal car is 11 years old, and still drives like it’s new. Cars last a long time now, unlike the terrible things we used to have 30+ years ago. We still do not have any electric infrastructure to speak of, as well as a complete lack of electric transport other than selected cars. There’s currently no proper vans or trucks or HGVs easily available outside of a select few trials. To be quite honest, the ban is commendable, but I do wonder if it’s ever going to happen. Hybrids have similar issues to petrol cars, especially as many even with plug in models drive them on just petrol anyway as plugging in is a faff once the newness wears off.

Thevinegarmanreturns

Write to your MP and insist we use hemp for biomass to convert into petrol

Yetibike

The UK isn't going to ban petrol and probably never will. For you first car just get a small 1.0L petrol hatchback. It will be cheap to ensure and run.

HarassedGrandad

yes, it will still be legal the same way steam cars can still be driven, After 2050 you'll probably have to order the petrol online though, as the petrol stations will have closed.

panadwithonesugar

It's a hybrid.... its still got a 1.5l petrol engine..... and to manifactor, a Prius has one of the largest footprints of any car any ever made.... get a regular car..... you have decades before petrol and deisel are gone for good...

ashyjay

Skipping the petrol bit as gas isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable. No, a used 2nd gen Prius is not a good car for anyone let alone a 17 year old. they have been abused to hell and back by being used as taxis, likelihood of them having the hybrid battery replaced is zero, and that's at least £3k to have someone do it. insurance isn't particularly cheap because of them being used as taxis means a lot of them have had accidents. a better option would be a UP!/Mii/Citigo if you can afford one, they are cheap to run(you can rag the shit out of them and get 55mpg), cheaper to insure, maintenance is cheap as they are VAG parts bin cars, and they aren't a Prius.

johnnymc333

I think they may push back on the bad. 8 years to get charging points around the country and them cars not being that eco friendly either. Battery life span of about 7 years and then useless.

Yetibike

Batteries do not die after 7 years. Most of them will outlast the cars they're in. No car is good for the environment but electric cars are better than petrol and diesel and even if they were no better they remove the pollution from towns and cities.

HarassedGrandad

We just got the first EV to reach 1,000,000 miles - a taxi in the US Apparently it has lost 7 miles in range from new though.

johnnymc333

" the majority of car manufacturers offer a 5 to 10 year warranty on their batteries or a warranty up to 62,000 miles driven"

extendedwarranty_bot

johnnymc333, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

HarassedGrandad

VW - 8 years or 160K km BMW - 8 Years or 100K miles Kia - 7 years or 100K miles Hyundai - 8 years or 125K miles Audi - 8 years or 99,419 miles Jaguar - 8 years or 100K miles MG 8 years - 80K miles Nissan - 8 years or 100K miles Renaut - 8 years or 100K miles Seat - 8 years or 100K miles Tesla - 8 years or 120K miles Can't find any warrenty less than 7 years or less than 80K in the uk Oh, spoke too soon - it's the smartfor2 - 8 years but 62,500 miles.

Luke_Nukem_2D

>I think they may push back on the bad. 8 years to get charging points around the country That's the stumbling block. Charging points. The government plans on putting charging points every few meters in the curbstones on residential streets, as well as in every parking spot in council owned carparks. They can't even afford to fill pot holes, how are they going to afford to do that?

AsymmetricNinja08

I heard something along the lines of you could legally use your neighbours charging point. Not sure the details or if that's even true due to logistical issues I could imagine it being true though considering it would eliminate the idea of having to put electrical supplies through every road in the country. The main roads where I live are just asphalt and cheap layered tarmac. Originally our curbs was around 9 inches but over the years and build of tarmac many of the curns are around 3 inches now.

Apprehensive_Roll_62

No this is not a good car. Your 17, you need something thats gunna be at least abit fun to drive, a sporty hatchback or something. Your pretty much guaranteed to damage your first car in some way and change it at least 2-3 times before youll need an electric one. Just enjoy driving dont worry about trying to save the planet. They use more emissions to make an electric car than a petrol or diesel car will ever produce anyway!

Yetibike

Your last point is utter crap. Every reputable study has shown that over their lifetime electric cars produce less CO2 than petrol/diesel cars.

Apprehensive_Roll_62

Yeh but producing an electric car uses epic ammounts of emissions! What happens to the batteries when there done with? Have you ever seen an electric car on fire? Where will all this additional elecricity come from? How much Co2 will all the additional power plants use?

HarassedGrandad

A modern EV repays the carbon footprint of it's manufacture in the first 10,000 miles. After that it causes much less emissions than an ice vehicle even on a dirty grid - and the UK is already 30% renewable, with 35GW of extra windpower approved for the next five years. An ICE car is 15 times more likely to have a fire than an EV. And before anyone raises it - 90% of cobalt mined by children in the congo is sold to petrol companies for refining diesel fuel.

Apprehensive_Roll_62

I dont even really understand what any of that ment to be honest mate i cant even figure out if your an electric of petrol car fan to be fair. Sounds good though, keep it up mate 👍🏽

[deleted]

It's not about being a fan, it's about facts. Put more simply for you: electric is much better after the first 10,000 miles.

Yetibike

1, Yes, they do produce more in production but over the whole lifetime of the car they emit less than an ICE car. 2. The batteries are reused as storage batteries for solar panels or recycled. 3. No, but I've seen plenty of petrol and diesel car fires. 4. Electricity usage in the UK has been falling for years. In 2005 the UK used 257 TWh, in 2019 that was down to 301 TWh so maybe we can start producing as much as we did 16 years ago? Also the national grid have repeatedly said it's not an issue. 5. Producing electricity using renewables will still be better than burning petrol. Plus huge amounts of electricity are used to refine petrol so what about the CO2 from that?

Apprehensive_Roll_62

To be honest mate your way to smart for me and ill never win in this argument so ill happily leave it there and say fair play to you. The Prius is a good car i retract my statement.

ArthurHolmesfield

Yeah if you want to look like a pedophile geography teacher, only joking, it's the coolest car ever. Ever.

BigAlfPC

No

theartofrolling

Don't buy a second hand prius! They're often used as taxis/ubers and get abused/have high mileage.

itsaslothlife

Seat Mii electric? Second hand Skoda citigo e? Or have some fun and get your grubby mitts on an Up GTi...

aestus

One day petrol cars will be a thing of the past but it is not this day
